***This review is for book and audiobook***
I read a lot of genres, but I had never read a book about Krampus, so this was my first one. This book provoked my thoughts and emotions:
Thoughts
The book provided a description of what a Krampus looked like and what it did, but I found it helpful to do a quick Google search to learn more. There were a few variances from the book to what my research found, and the biggest difference was that the book said the Krampus punishes folks of all ages, whereas my research said Krampus only punished children. The other topic that was thought provoking was in regard to the first aid kit that Naomi used to patch up Kilean. I realize that authors have the right to use their imaginations, but I questioned what kind of first aid kit had tools and materials to stitch a wound and the medication and tools needed to give an injection. I’m not sure what country the story was based in, but those types of medical intervention tools are not usually stocked in a first aid kit, and those types of medical interventions require training. I know…it’s all fiction so I should stop thinking about it.
Emotions
The book took me through a lot of emotions: fear when Kilean was found and before Naomi and Kilean formed a bond, sadness when he had to return to hell and the year he missed, happiness at the beauty of their friendship and slow-burn love, wonder and excitement with the spice, anger with the gray Krampus for his jealousy and meanness, and joyful anticipation of their next visit together. I also found humor when Hayley met Kilean.
In summary, I like books that cause me to think, so I can say that I definitely liked this book. The author did a good job providing enough information about Krampus to keep me interested. I now have a fascination with Krampus and will seek out more books featuring Krampus. I liked that Naomi was a smart and savvy woman. Kilean was stuck in a rut, simply following orders, going through the same routine daily. I liked that Naomi made Krampus want more and slowly helped him build his confidence. I appreciate that the author provided alternate endings/epilogues for fans. Nice touch. I also liked the voices of the narrators. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and think the delightful narration added to the experience for me.
