The life of a student-athlete is as busy as it gets. Rhodes Langley is stuck in a balancing act between passing her classes, constant alpine ski training, and maintaining the “social life” she likes to imagine having. Long story short, Rhodes is one girl who doesn’t need any more added stress in her life.
When she receives a startling call from her mom, Rhodes’ world is turned upside down. Her anxiety spirals when she learns her cousin is attending the family wedding... with Rhodes’ ex-boyfriend! She can see it the pity hugs, the side-long glances, the whispers, and enough backhanded comments to make her blood boil.
In a last-ditch effort to save face, Rhodes quickly decides she’ll need that plus one after all. With only serious partners being allowed, Rhodes finally reveals to her family the secret boyfriend that she has totally been dating this whole time...
She can only imagine one man pulling this off, and Roman Huxley is as secretive as they come. Grumpy, quiet, and allergic to friendship, the captain of the alpine ski team is the perfect candidate. But in order for this to work, everyone needs to know just how perfect they are together.
Will Roman and Rhodes be able to endure this event with their heads held high, or will the situation become too messy for all parties involved?
Ella is a Canadian author who loves reading, writing, playing beer league softball, and eating really fancy cheese!
For the past five years her dream has been to write a ski racer romance novel. Unfortunately, the sport she competed in her whole life isn't mentioned in any form of media, and that always bothered her as a girl. It wasn't until she started coaching young ski racers and they expressed similar concerns, that she decided to do something about it. Although it's not much, Ella is doing what she can to represent everyone that loves ski racing as much as her.
Alpine ski racing is a huge sport in Canada, and every athlete shows so much dedication towards it. This novel is for every racer who wants to see their sport being represented! :)
ella’s debut novel was an absolute 5 star read!!! this was such a heartwarming, funny, well-written, and fast-paced romance novel. such an easy read and i absolutely devoured it! THOROUGHLY enjoyed every second of it!
it’s got: 🎿 a collegiate ski team (yes pls) 💘 fake dating that turns real (as it should) 🖤 a grumpy male lead 👑 a sarcastic fmc who absolutely carries the banter 🫶 the kind of found family vibes that make your chest ache a little
also: i know ella through booksta and somehow she managed to bottle up her actual personality (kind, genuine, hilarious) and pour it onto every page. there’s heart in this one, and it shows.
a must-read for: ✨ fans of new adult romance ✨ lovers of winter sports + messy feelings
p.s. the side characters??? hello??? i’m gonna need their books IMMEDIATELY. ella if you’re reading this... i’m free this year. to read. to beta. to sob. whatever you need.
It’s been 2 days since I finished this book and I still can’t stop thinking about Rhodes and Roman! I have ZERO criticisms for this book!
Setting: I was immersed immediately. This is a sports romance and you dive head first into the sports aspect and Ella teaches you so much about competitive ski without it feeling like an info dump! And this book is r a sports romance as a means to an end or create a trope but a fully immersive, purposeful sports aspect! And I love all the things I learned about Canada! 🇨🇦 I’ll need to try this hot maple syrup in the snow cause what is that?! 😂
MCs: I’m at a loss for words on what to say about both of them! I LOVED both of their personalities. I love them as individuals and a couple and their chemistry was just PERFECT! I adore their interactions and banter.
Writing: pining, tension, amazing pace, soooo so incredibly well done! This is also no spice but the tension and chemistry are so amazing! This book is so unique and quirky and SUCH a breath of fresh air. It feels so different from basically every book out recently!
Look, the story is cute and I absolutely loved the MMC and the dynamic between the main characters. However there was some things I couldn’t overlook.
It genuinely baffles me when authors don’t know the difference between to and too. There were a few errors in this book other than that too (peak when it should have been peek). I also feel like I read the word “plop” like fifty times.
This book did not need to be almost 500 pages, most of it felt like FMC describing people’s facial expressions as well as parties that contributed nothing to the plot.
The main trope of the book was fake dating but lowkey it wasn’t even necessary. She lied about having a boyfriend to bring to a wedding.. is it ever that serious.. no one was going to hold her at gunpoint for coming alone.
Idk, it was cute but frustrating at times. Roman, the MMC saved this book for me. It was very amateur at times. And yes I will be reading the next one.
I am so proud of Ella for releasing her debut romance novel!
If you want the vibes of a true romance comedy, this book nails it. The FMC is a funny, bubbly ski student who needs to find a "serious boyfriend" for her cousin's wedding. She decides to ask her grumpy, mysterious ski instructor to be her fake boyfriend for the event. Little does she know, he is up for the challenge minus the "fake" part.
I laughed so many times as this story takes an unserious, light tone while incorporating great romance and tension. If you're in a reading slump, this should do the trick!
I was honored to receive an arc of SYL and I devoured it! This story was so cute! I adored the relationship between the MCs and side characters. I was smiling the whole time! I don’t get me started on how funny it was! I am so proud of you Ella!
Ella is SO FUNNY!! I was so honored to read an early copy of this, and I had so much fun reading it. If you want a spice-free rom-com that will have you laughing out loud, pick this one up!!!
4.25⭐️ – ELLA!!! I’m so proud of you, boo! This is an AMAZING debut novel, and I can’t wait to see what you do with the next one!! I devoured this book so fast! Rhodes and Roman are just adorable. Their communication is on point, the banter was bantering, and the chemistry between them?? 😩 I was literally getting butterflies from Roman. This man, the act-of-service king, the humble yet sincere captain of the Polar Bear ski team... 🤭 The 6' broody guy who only smiles and laughs with the woman he’s been eyeing for years! I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. He's the definition of actions speak louder than words—but when he does speak, you literally stop everything to listen to this godly man! I wish we had his POV too, but those little thoughts under each chapter? SO cute! I have a couple of guesses about who the next book will be about 👀 and I can’t wait for more of the Alpine Glow adventures 🥰
With the addictiveness of Ali, Hazelwood and The level of description like BK Borison, I loved everything about this book.
For a debut romance novel, this book was kinda everything.
OK, let’s get into the characters:
Rhodes was such a relatable and fun character to read about. From the college parties, the emotional maturity,to the way she handles her friendships, she is for sure going to be a favorite female main character. I’ll always recommend someone should read. Who wouldn’t want to read about a girl that strives her hardest and everything she does, including her sport in her relationships. Girls is iconic. It’s really refreshing to see a college girl. We depicted this way as someone that is emotionally mature because they do exist and they make the best people in college.
A Roman, on the other hand, is everything I want and all my friend and I just wanna take him and scoop him up and give him the biggest hug in the world and tell him how much he means to me. His selflessness is something to admire because I would've sold out the coaches to at least one person in every friend group AND the athletic department directors at the end of the skiing season. But UGH just the way he's so gentle, patient, and understand with Rhodes melted me entirely. AND HE'S RESPECTFUL. HE'S A GOOD MAN SAVANNAH. I could go on and on an on about this man.
Plot!!!
The plot was plotting and the pacing was beautiful. Everything made sense from the build up of the relationship, the dating, the skiing, up until the wedding. I kinda wish the wedding was sooner and we could see some more cute moments and how Jasmine got her ass handed to her, but i guessssss daniel getting punched in the face made up for that because i was itching to crawl into that book and do it myself. ew.
This book had me screaming, giggling, kicking my feet, and all the things that I normally never do in a book BUT IT WAS SOOOOOO GOOOOD GUYS.
Literlly screaming into a wall because the kiss was that prolonged. Ngl I hated you ella for that.
But i did first pump the air when daniel got punched. so. can you tell i loved that part. sometimes violence is the answer. maybe don't quote me on that.
Anyways I hope Aurora and Xander get their book next - or at least an bonus chapter of some kind (preferable a mini novella?). I love Ella's writing and want nothing but more from her.
Ella McGivern’s debut novel will have you kicking your feet and blushing on every page.
The novel follows Rhodes Langley, a university level skier, who runs into a dilemma when her mother informs her that her cousin will be taking her ex to a family wedding. To clarify, her ex-boyfriend that cheated on her with said cousin. Rhodes is desperate to not show up alone and be forced into the role of the lonely, jaded ex. So she devises a plot to find a fake boyfriend to take to the wedding. Though she’s not sure who can be a believable contender, willing to play along for the sake of their team and her family.
Enter moody, grumpy Roman Huxley. He’s captain of the ski team that Rhodes is on but her personal interactions with him have been few and far between. He would be the perfect candidate for her fake dating plot. But first she has to convince him to do it.
4.5 ⭐️'s!!! genuinely one of the best books I've ever read. I'm so mad I put it off for as long as I did. this was so unique, I loved learning more about skiiing and every single character (minus the horrible ex) was likeable! I usually feel like romance books don't need to be a series but with this one, I'm like I need book 2 NOW
Okay, I’m not really one to be a fan of romance. But this was such a fun read! I thought the characters were so fun and the relationships in the story progressed really well. Ella did such a good job adding in humour to really make this such a feel good read. I also just want to say how much I appreciate how Ella went into detail about ski racing because I went into this knowing nothing. I can’t wait to read more and am blown away by the talent that Ella had shown in her writing!!
This reads like a 90's/00's romcom, with everything from mean girls to friends in the friend group who secretly like each other to a really bad Teen Mom who doesn't understand her daughter. Even the jocks are represented - ski jocks. It felt very high school like, which I just can't relate to anymore. It included scenarios like 'who to sit next to on a bus ride', 'arcade/carnival like montage', childish behavior and more.
(I'm not deducting any points for this, but to those who don't like grammar errors: do not read this. It has a lot.)
I definitely see potential in this new romance author, but I also believe that a lot of work will need to be done for her to become a better writer. Her writing style is very young and too wordy, with no depth to any of her characters.
Firstly: During chapter 1, the FMC indirectly critized fellow women twice. Her cousin is terrible - we weren't given a reason why (until later) - and her roommate's physique is apparently petite and delicate, as well as muscled - not making any sense - which obviously makes her "not the best skier in the country". 🙄 There were better ways to say that. Also, just support your best friend, don't take her down. Tbh, I absolutely hated the FMC, Rhodes. She was too insecure for my taste. There were multiple times she took down other women as well as being insecure about her own looks or actions. But at times she was confident - not sure the author knew who her FMC was supposed to be.
Secondly: There was too much telling and not enough showing—and even the telling often relied heavily on facial expressions and body language. It felt off. We only experienced the characters’ emotions through the lens of our FMC. If Roman frowned, Rhodes would notice it and immediately assign an emotion to it, rather than showing us how that frown affected her or offering insight into her interpretation. It made the emotional depth feel somewhat flat and one-dimensional. It also resulted in a lack of emotional development between the main characters. I wasn't vibing with them at all. They had some really cute moments, but because I didn't connect with them, the moments fell flat. This type of writing also didn't create depth to the characters. I was missing reasons for Jasmine's hatred. I was missing reasons for Aurora's crush on Liam. I was missing depth to Landon and Xander. I was missing Rhys' story and reasons for his dark character. The writing style simply made the story lack depth and connection to all the characters.
Thirdly: The dialogue didn't make sense a bit too often. But that kinda links to the whole 90's high school romcom movie. It didn't make sense, because the characters goes to uni, but talk like preteens who just learned how to talk to other people. Often too awkward. 🙈
Fourthly: Not knowing the bride's name of the wedding you're going to is FUCKED UP! I was really disliking the book by the end, and this was just the last straw. What the actual fuck. I got so mad at every single character at that point.
I did enjoy some parts of the story, especially my favorite trope - the "fuck it" trope. There were about two moments between the characters a found extremely cute, but unfortunately most of them were cringey due to the high school vibe.
Overall, not a great read. But I do see great potential in the author, she just needs to add a bit more depth to her characters, as well as stop leading the story with facial expressions and body language.
I have gathered my thoughts and am ready to RAVE about this incredible story.
From page one you are transported into the world of competitive college ski racing. If you have no clue about anything regarding to ski racing (me), it is all explained perfectly so you can fully immerse yourself in the characters life.
Secondly, Roman!!! The book boyfriend of the year!! This man is so down bad but hides it so well until he doensttttt. I cannot tell you how giddy this man and his actions made me. I was kicking my feet and smiling so hard my face hurt. The little moments that Ella McGivern was able to carve into this story were stunning. These little moments were between the main couple (so wholesome) but also incorporated with the AMAZING side characters. The attachment that I have to these side characters (Im looking at your Xander and Aurora) is unreallll and likely unhealthy. Truly, the shenanigans of this ski racing team was perfect.
If you are looking for a fluffy, adorable, college sports romance story then look no further!!
Please note: I may be slightly biased as Ella is one of my best friends butttt that does not effect my rating or the beauty of this story, its a really good book.
“Love, we’ve been dating for quite some time now. This is just the first time you’ve accepted it.”
Ah Roman ♥️✨ This man is so sweet and a complete green flag.
Ski you Later is such a cute and lighthearted book, it was fun to read. I found myself laughing out loud many times and swoon over Roman 🤭 Reading about skiing was an interesting experience too, since I didn't know anything prior to this book. Overall a great debut novel and I'm looking forward to the next book!
Honestly this book was so cute! This was a great first book of Ella’s and I honestly hope to see many many more! Such a fun and light read that warmed my heart! Keep up the great work Ella!!
P.S. I loved the cute little chapter names in Romans pov and thought they were the best added touch once I figured it out.
i looveeddd every second of this book and it was just adorable and the right amount of everything. the things Roman did for her were so cute and just showed how much he really loves her 🥹 fake dating will always do it for me!! "it was never fake for me" AHHHH 🤭🤭 Rhodes is so mature and sweet, how she handled Jasmine at the end and honestly i laughed out loud when Daniel had the audacity to propose.. at a wedding.. when Rhodes boyfriend was RIGHT. THERE. 😭 even better when Roman punched him👅
"When we kiss again, there’s not going to be one bone in your body that thinks this relationship is fake" okay just admit you’re obsessed with her. or when she told him he needed more friends than her and his answer was just "No, Langley. I really don’t."
Xander and Landon were so hilarious 😭 I‘m SO excited that the next book is about Aurora and Xander 😛
did this book make anyone else really want to ski or snowboard? because i really have the urge to.
Oh my GOLLY that was one of the best times of my LIFE!!!
I’m SO upset that it’s over!!! 😭❤️
The characters are so fun and relatable! The plot was fun and full of communication and genuine friendships and happiness! The side characters were fun (except maybe Jasmine 😤 we don’t like her, or Daniel 😡)
AND DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON RHODES AND ROMAN THEY’RE MY PERFECT ANGELS AND I ADORE THEM 🥹😭❤️
They’re the perfect couple, and their progression from friends to a couple is 😘🤌🏼
(I’m slightly biased because they remind me a lot of me and my bf! 😅😄)
Anyways I ADORED this book and I cannot wait for book 2! 😍
Full disclosure: I do know the author somewhat, so with that bias, this is a 5/5⭐ read.
That said, even without the personal connection, I’d still rate it five stars—and here’s why:
This debut novel offers a genuinely engaging reading experience, not just because of its charm or romantic tension, but because it’s thoughtfully written and grounded in a fresh, authentic perspective. The writing is confident, the story well-paced, and the character development feels earned.
One of the standout elements is the emotional progression of Rhodes. Rather than relying on repetitive inner monologues and the same drawn-out confusion page after page that I feel I read too much in other romance novels. This narrative captures a clear arc of emotional awareness and growth. It makes the romance feel way more natural and satisfying.
Ella’s background in ski racing adds a unique layer. The technical details—event timing, race structure, and the mental space of athletes—serve not only as rich context but as a meaningful backdrop for character and relationship development. I really wasn’t expecting to learn about ski racing but I’m very glad I did!
As for the romance itself, while the archetypes may be familiar (tall, dark and brooding handsome man with smaller vibrant unconventionally beautiful woman). The execution avoids cliché. The dynamic between the characters isn’t built on dependency or forced chemistry. Instead, there's mutual growth, emotional depth, and vulnerability, all delivered in a way that feels good and grounded. Not like “these two are supposed to be together so now they are”.
3.5/5 Started really strong, I loved the ski competition plot and all the characters, felt like a good amount without overloading on too much background for the non important ones. I’ve been craving reading a book like the movie Cloud 9 for years and this semi scratched that itch.
Unfortunately, as the book went on it felt like the writing got worse, it became very Wattpad and the way dialogue was written became more cringe and not like something people would say in real life (which is a big pet peeve of mine- it completely takes you out of the book). By the time the first competition was ending I was struggling to keep reading, there were a few things that were underdeveloped and felt just thrown in for added side plots, but hopefully if this becomes a series we can see more from the side characters (Aurora and Xander🫶🏼) and those other plots continue.
All in all it was a good book and I did like it but is not something I would read again.
“Now, why would I want you anywhere but right beside me?”
Okay… sports romance—count me in, but Ski romance—I don't know — double count me in, mainly if Ella writes it. This book is so sweaty that my face hurt from giggling too much. My smile never faded, which says a lot because I dropped three books right before this book.
Roman and Rhodes is a story brimming with romance, comedy, and the kind of friendships worth fighting for, all sprinkled with plenty of flirting. Roman, the introverted captain of the ski team, doesn't have many friends and often comes across as grumpy. In contrast, Rhodes is a ray of sunshine dealing with the fallout from a cheating ex-boyfriend. Her self-centered cousin’s older brother is getting married soon, and she is bringing Rhodes’s ex as her boyfriend. Rhodes has to navigate this event by pretending to have a boyfriend despite the wedding being only three weeks away.
When their mutual longing and small sparks of attraction bring them closer, Rhodes proposes a plan: Roman will be her fake boyfriend. Unbeknownst to her, he has secretly been interested in her for a long time. The story unfolds with plenty of comedic moments, genuine love, and mutual respect as Rhodes and Roman develop real feelings for each other. Instead of acting on their emotions impulsively, they begin to embrace a real relationship.
