AFMAM MY LOVE!!!! THE SCREAMS I SCRUMPT WHILE READING THIS!!!

I had the absolute joy and honor of beta reading this book, and when I tell you I could barely put it down --

I screamed, I gasped, I teared up, I stared at the wall, I reread countless beautiful lines. Emma is an excellent writer and storyteller and she created a story here that will live in my heart forever. Her characters feel so dang real and everything that they go through -- despite it involving fantastical powers that I can only wish I had -- is deeply relatable.

One of my favorite things about the story is that both of our main characters' families are involved! No dead, irrelevant parents here, lol!! Some of my favorite characters are the aunts and uncles of our protagonists, and I think their involvement is one of the things that makes this series stand out so much. You can find yourself in this even if you're no longer a young adult!

Emma's intentionality behind every piece of this book really shines through! I love her heart for story and believe it's what made this one so deeply impactful for me. The way that she handles sickness & secrets, family dynamics & friendships, insecurities & growing up was so beautifully done. It inspired me as a reader and as a writer.

This is absolutely a series to read and reread and recommend! I can't wait to see where the story goes next!! If you like YA at all, if you're looking for clean, safe reads for all ages, if you're looking for a story with substance you can chew on, if you enjoy series like Percy Jackson and think it'd be fun if they were theater kids -- READ AFMAM!!! You won't regret it.

Thank you, Emma, for this fantastic story and for the opportunity to read it. If you need me I will be shouting about it from the rooftops for the foreseeable future.

*This book is in the same world as Emma's Maybe Duology, but you don't have to have read those to jump in! I hadn't yet read them but was still able to fully enjoy this!*

INITIAL THOUGHTS AFTER FINISHING:

What the actual HECK was that ending?! Full review to come, just know that these were my emotions during the last chapter: 😱🫣😡

OFFICIAL ARC REVIEW

All For Mage and Melody—or AFMAM, as it’s affectionately called by its growing fan base—is such a fun, fast-paced, heart-filled beginning to what’s sure to be a new favorite series of mine.

As anyone who’s read her books knows, Hill has such a way with characters. Each and every one (except Oliver. That man is dirt.) was endearing right off the bat. There are so many angsty teens in media these days, so I really appreciated that fact that Hill’s young cast were relatable without all of the angst. Her characters fight battles and deal with insecurities, but that’s only a part of who they are. They don’t make that their struggles with anxiety or peer pressure their whole personality. You get to empathize for them without feeling bogged down by their mess, which I feel is really rare. Kudos to you for creating such fantastic characters, Emma! It feels truly impossible to pick a favorite member of the AFMAM cast, but I think I’ll have to say mine was either Tali or Rune. They both have my whole entire heart and I can’t wait to see them again in Book Two.

Speaking of our heroes, I have to put in a note here about Tali and Melody’s relationship. I believe that Tali is sixteen and Melody is fifteen, and while I’m usually not the biggest fan of shipping characters that young, Hill wrote their relationship in such a way that I really couldn’t help but love them. They’re a sweet pair of friends who slowly turn into something more, and I’m SO excited to watch them grow up together throughout this series. They’re like Percebeth, but cuter in my very personal opinion. That first kiss scene was perfection *sobs*.

I will shout from the rooftops how much I love the fact that family was such a big part of this story. They were messy and dysfunctional and loved each other deeply. Everyone was literally willing to die for each other (definitely not scared at the thought of that actually happening in future books…). On the note of familial relationships, there was one small issue I had with Tali and Melody’s families that I feel is worth mentioning. Both Tali and Melody find their parents embarrassing at times, and in general, they often view adults as annoying hinderances. This is a personal pet peeve of mine in MG/YA fiction, and truly the one thing that I didn’t adore about this book.

The increasing tension and intrigue kept me hooked from page one all the way until the end, and more than half of my time reading this was spent perched on the edge of my seat repeatidly yelling “OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH”. The twists and turns were delightful, and seriously, what the heck was that final chapter?!

I keep telling my friends that this book gives “punk rock”—Superman (2025) fans, you know exactly what I mean. Though there were some more serous, intense parts of this book, it overall had such a fun, lighthearted feel, and it was a great end of summer read. I am so beyond excited for Book Two!

BINGED THIS IN ONE DAY AND DON'T REGRET A SINGLE THING.

AFMAM pulled me in from the get-go - Emma has written characters that you immediately want to root for, with stakes and intrigue that don't let up until the very end (and plenty of loose ends for the rest of the quartet- the ending had me ready to RIOT, in a good way, of course). I genuinely couldn't put this book down. It's wholesome, it celebrates light and goodness, and the plot never stops moving. This book is perfect for the young people in your life - and you're more than likely going to enjoy it just as much!

This book stressed me out so much. But like, in a good way. High stakes, people. 😂 What I love MOST about this book is ALL THE DIVERSITY AND REPRESENTATION. There's so much of it and it all feels so natural. I NEED more books like this. Can't wait for the rest of the series to release!

5 stars! I've been putting you off this review because I don't know how I could put into words how much I love this story!!!! If Percy Jackson meets theater kids sounds good to you please pick this up!! I highly recommend!

“Trivial things like age shouldn't matter when you were the chosen one.”

✩ Theater Kids
✩ Chosen One
✩ Chronic Illness Rep
✩ Healthy family relationships

Melody and Tali were both such relatable and incredible characters. The chronic illness representation with Tali was really, really well done. You could tell how much care Emma put into representing it correctly. There is even a forward in the book from someone that has dealt with the disease. While I don’t have his disease, so many of his emotions and thoughts were so relatable. I haven’t read Emma Hill's other books about the adults in this world, but I still appreciated how well developed all of the family dynamics are. I loved the theater elements but mostly I fell in love with the characters, They were so deep and well developed, with such well-rounded personalities and insecurities. The blossoming romance between our two main characters was so incredibly sweet and absolutely gave Percabeth vibes! And that cliffhanger I cannot wait for book two!!!

Content: one sweet barely described kiss, one character with inflammatory bowel disease with a ostomy bag, bullying over appearance and health problems.

Quotes:

“Please remember you love me. That glare could topple kingdoms."

“Maybe that was why he played games about heroes, he thought when she turned out the light and left him in the dark. Tali needed stories where the good won out. Where the misery and pain and hopelessness didn't last forever. That was what he'd dreamed of in the hospital, before the surgery. He'd recover. He'd be fine. They'd discover some medicine that would cure him, and Tali would leave all the hurt behind. Then they'd broken his body to save him. Sometimes, life steals your chance to be the hero.”

“Didn't her parents realize how childish their distraction tactics were? She wouldn't just forget about being the chosen one because of some shopping spree.”

"I just said you had to go to school. Who says you can't save the world at the same time?"

“He should be grateful to be alive. He missed chocolate milk.”

"Do you like Lord of the Rings, too, Liv?"
"Obviously. I'm a human being with a heart."
"It's hard to tell sometimes," Sam groaned.

He cupped her face. "You're not an idiot. You believe in what's right, and you'll do whatever it takes to fight for it. You might not always make the best calls," he admitted, glancing around them, "but that doesn't make you an idiot. Or at least, that's not how I see you.”

Theatre kids, magic, and chosen ones? Say less.

I loved this book! This story was a good mix of fun high school vibes and magical adventure. At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to finish it because medical stuff in books tends to bother me BUT I ended up finishing it and really liking the story! And Tali ended up being my favorite character :D He is literally so relatable. I also liked Melody a lot! Can we celebrate the fact that this book has two great POVs? *claps*

Content warnings: magic (but no spells) and the main character, Tail, has a chronic illness.

The ending...I need the next book ASAP!

Note: I received an eARC copy of this book from the author and also supported the author's Kickstarter.

"It's far harder to be a hero when it's not prophesied."

There were SO many quotes I could have chosen (and at least 50 highlighted sections in my ARC copy) but this one felt especially fitting since I joined this book's street team accidentally! And I'm really glad I did. Emma has created a fantastic adventure that I'm honored to have had the chance to read early (although it does mean I'm anxiously awaiting book two for that much longer!)

This book was an ADVENTURE. I loved the way it started as a solidly contemporary story with a bit of magical realism and then drew us deeper and deeper into the fantasy elements of its world. It's a fantastic start to what promises to be an engaging and heartfelt series!

Tali owns my heart and like Melody I would protect him with my life. He's torn between wanting to disappear into the background and wanting to be seen for who he truly is. Life has already knocked him down so many times, and he's tired of getting up again...but he still does. His quiet resilience and determination make him an excellent contrast to Melody and her chaos energy.

I loved Melody and her drive to step into the role of the hero she's spent her entire life preparing to become. She's fierce but kind, and more insecure than she wants to let on. I spent a decent portion of my reading time wanting to shake some sense into her while simultaneously remembering my own fourteen-year-old schemes for setting the world to rights.

In a delightfully refreshing change of pace from a lot of fiction geared toward teens, the kids AREN'T right all the time, the parents (and extended families) aren't clueless obstacles, and Tali and Melody were well rounded characters who could stand on their own as far more than just checkbox representation for their conditions. Tali's struggles with chronic illness were touching and well-crafted without taking away from his character as a whole.

The story itself kept me on my toes the whole time, especially with the dramatic ironies created by the dual POVs. Knowing what one character did about a situation or person added tension to the other's perspective. I need answers after that ending, and I can't wait to see what book two has in store!

Did I finish the book or did it finish me???
I loved it so much, and OMG where is book two???
I will definitely write a more coherent review, hopefully tomorrow, but for now I had to scream this into the void! Y'all need to read this book! Period.
...
Okay, now for a more coherent comment:
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I cannot wait till I have a physical copy in my hands so that I can hold it close to my heart and hug it. Did I mention that I need book two already? Yeah...
First and foremost, I want to thank the author, Emma Hill, for the opportunity to read this book before its release in September. I am honored to be a part of the ARC/street team for this wonderful book and I am excited to see more in the AFMAM world.
In the book we have the two primary characters that the events revolve around, Melody and Tali. Melody is 14, soon to be 15 and she is starting her freshman year in high school, and Tali is almost 16, but he had to repeat freshman year, because of a medical condition that led to a surgery. It's a fresh start for both of them, and they both face a lot of challenges. Outside of the problems at school they are facing some private obstacles: Melody has to come to terms with her temper, and being the chosen one, and Tali has to figure things out about his powers that have not manifested yet.
In their quest of navigating real life and the magical background in their worlds, there is a lot of cool things that happen, adventures to be had both in school and out of school, ultimately leading to where life takes our two heroes by the end of the school semester (and the end of book one).
There's also theater group, and I was so excited to see just a bunch of kids trying out for Alice in Wonderland, and having fun rehearsing for the show. It reminded me of the theater kid (head)canon for Ethan Hunt in the Mission Impossible movies. In fact, Melody reminds me so much of Ethan, it's uncanny.
The worldbuilding in this book was well thought out, rich with many facts that I loved, and its complexity shows how much thought and planning went into the creative process. I am simply amazed.
I can't recommend this book enough, so I hope this helps you pick up your next read... in September.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!! I adored the family vibes. I loved how Emma mixes reality with magic. Melody and Tali have such a cute relationship where they both help each other be brave in different ways. I love how family is so important in this book. The families may make mistakes but they still love and support each other.

OH. MY. GOSH. This YA adventure was absolutely incredible! From crying reading chapter 1 to being in absolute shock by the end, I was absolutely blown away by this book. The foreshadowing intricately woven throughout this story blew me away and I felt often like the characters did: there is something more happening beneath the surface but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Melody, the over confident FMC is humbled and the nervous/shy MMC, Tali, grows in his confidence in the best ways! Their journey, along with their friends and family was a winding path of grey areas that led to some answers, but even more questions. I genuinely was on the edge of my seat with this one, and could not put it down! How long do I have to wait for the next one? 😭

You can tell a book is awesome when it gets someone to write their first review!
Everything about this story was phenomenal. I am in love with the writing style and worldbuilding of this story. It was so wonderful to see chronic illness rep so well done and the characters were amazing and indepth. Only downside is the end left me with so many questions to ponder while waiting for book two!

All for Mage and Melody is the first of a series (currently not yet completed) that delivers on the promise that there is on a whole lot more to come, resolving enough for a satisfying ending, but leaving enough questions that you're left wishing the next book was already in your hands.
Written from two perspectives, the writer took great care to make sure the characters weren't accidentally already aware of stuff that wasn't shared between them.

Both main characters have a lot they feel like they need to hide from the world and are reasons why they shouldn't go to school, despite their parents making them. An illness from Tali's perspective, and being the chosen one from Melody's perspective. While they are strangers at first, chance encounters and being in the same theater class brings them closer together, even with their secrets between them.

The theater, with the story of Alice in Wonderland, becomes a big factor for both of them. Where challenges are met and major discoveries are made. Romance bubbles in an authentically awkward teenage way and not so well thought out decisions lead to dangerous situations and betrayals. A story full of ups and downs and characters who want to do good without jumping into the perfect hero role and where each good decision also has a negative aspect.

As with many great book series the story introduces a lot of interesting pieces of incomplete puzzles. Some get solved by the end of the book, but the vast majority are only partially completed, while others are scrambled further, leaving you wanting for an answer on what will only be revealed in future books.
It builds reasonably calm at the start, allowing you to really get to know the characters and their reasons, only really diving into the deep at a quicker pace in the last third of the story, after an incident forces the hands of the main characters.

And yes, the book's name makes a lot of sense once you've read the whole story.

I also thank the author for allowing me to be one of the ARC readers for this story and am looking forward to how the story progresses.

This book is one of the BEST books I’ve read! Emma does a great job of building characters (love them and their awesome powers) and explaining all the different things that need to explained(no spoiler lol) the storyline is laid out perfectly and is engaging and interesting! I couldn’t stop reading, I probably could’ve read it in a day if I had the time!
I would recommend this series/book to anyone, any age! I can’t wait for the next book!!

'All for Mage and Melody' is easily my favourite read of the year. When I say I inhaled this book, I mean it. I finished it in less than 24 hours.

It hit all of the right notes for me: high school kids attempting to save the world. Seriously, I will really practically anything that falls under this genre. Without exaggeration, this book was everything I wanted as a young 14-year-old, and I'm sad this book didn't get to shape my childhood.

But oh! How happy I am it's a part of my life now, tapping into that nostalgia of favourite, childhood books.

Tali and Melody are the heroes of this story, and they're both very likeable. This, in fact, is an understatement. These two live rent free in my head.

I wondered if that ending was coming (in the best way) <3 The pay off in the next three books is going to be fantastic.

My best piece of advice when it comes to this book is to read it, and get everyone else you know to read it too.

Very few books can catch my attention within the first few pages. It normally takes me a while to get invested in the story, sometimes taking me weeks to get through the first five or so chapters before I really begin to care about a story, even if the book is amazing.
All For Mage and Melody had me from page 1. I read the book in two days.
And will I get over it? No, no I will not.
All For Mage and Melody is so near and dear to my heart, and the characters feel incredibly real.
AND THE REPRESENATION! One thing I will never get over in any of Emma Hill's books is her representation. Not only is it clearly a priority to the author, but it is also well written. Not just a statement that something affects someone, but a look into how they truly are affected in the day to day. How it affects their minds, and their decisions. People will see themselves in the characters, and this sort of representation is just what we truly mean when we say representation can educate.

All in all, I would recommend All For Mage and Melody to any one at any age.

Emma Hill's All for Mage and Melody was a wonderful read, and her portrayal of relationships between the main characters, their family, and their friends was delightful! Her characters are full of life and personality! Melody as our brave (and a little bit stubborn) chosen one and Tali as our hesitant but caring co-lead served as wonderful eyes to witness the story through.

Hill noted in her ARC survey that there were two books in this universe that were already written, and at first I wondered if I would be missing out on anything by not reading those two first. However, this book was not only a perfect introduction to the world the two books explored, but it only made me want to go read them more! The secret world that she has created, along with its magic system, is so interesting, and I loved learning more about the different roles it plays in the lives of each character.

I ultimately think that All for Mage and Melody is a wonderful book to read for those who love stories about chosen ones, and the exploration of what it means to be a hero.

A story of becoming of yourself even when you feel a little bit different. A tale of heroes and the wannabes. Love, forgiveness, friendship, family, everything good, fun, mysterious, and gripping in the first installment of Emma Hill’s middle grade contemporary fantasy series.

Professional review aside, here are some ramblings.

Percy Jackson vibes were strong with this book. However I loved the presence of healthy families who only wanted to help.

The twists, turns, and magic of this book would have anyone on the edge of their seats.

The inclusion and battles teens with disabilities or differences may face in high school is met tastefully and helps the reader feel seen with their own struggles.

And the ending???? Give me the rest of the books. Right now.

I had received an opportunity to beta read this book!

I have to say, I loved it so much! The Maybe Duology had done an amazing job setting up the world for this book! This book also stands out on its own (but I would recommend giving the Maybe Duology a read before getting into All For Mage And Melody)!

I don't want to give any spoilers (because I feel that'll ruin the first ever experience you get when picking up a new book), but I will say that it's worth the read!

I will definitely be re-reading these books at some point, and I also can't wait for when the next book releases!

Brooke(37) I really enjoyed reading this with my kids! It was exciting and fun and a clean read. I liked the representation of real issues that people face especially with mental health and physical health and it wasn't over the top it was realistic. I loved the characters and family dynamics. I liked the magic world connection with the real world and how she intertwined them. Very excited to continue the series.

Rayena(17) The character development was good and I liked the mystery behind the story and the twists throughout it kept me engaged.

Ephraim (15) The story was good especially with character development, the characters were realistic. I connect with Tali because he has health issues like I do. I liked the use of magic in the real world and they were humans not super heros just ever day people.

Hannah beth(13) My favorite parts of the story were when they were at school because it felt real to me. I like the different student representation and ways of handling bullys and the consequences of our actions good or bad. My favorite character was Tali because he was humble.

All for Mage and Melody is quite the unusual heroes journey. In this blend of exciting adventures and mysterious magic, high school theater kids are the chosen ones. Or at least heroes is what they are trying to be. Saving the world while making it through high school? Not as easy as it sounds ;)
The cast of lovable characters makes AfMaM a heartfelt kind of fun. There is both found family among friends and beautifully done, tested and true relationships between the families already there. (The support system for these kids 🥹)
But not all is fun and games. There is chronic illness and mental health representation that I think the author touched on and portrayed really well. One thing this story isn’t is simple. The twisting turning plot takes you deeper into a rabbit hole of secrets getting“curiouser and curiouser” till you are left asking “now what?”
I absolutely loved the characters and their story. I laughed I cried (a lot of tears 😭 ) and I for one cannot wait to find out what is next for these unlikely heroes. If you love heartfelt stories with adventure, magic, and a touch of romance this might be a book for you.

I needed Book 2, like, A FEW MINUTES AGO!!!

Y’all are in for a wild, wild ride come September. This is a page-turner that will hold your attention to the very last scene of the book. The magic system and world-building is so imaginative and creative. And the characters!!! Gosh, the characters. 😭

Rune, my guy, you have my entire heart! Melody and Tali are the most precious kids I’ve ever read in a book.

Full review to come very soon! AFMAM is going to live rent free in my brain for the next year.

This book is magical, fun, and incredible! Emma Hill does an AMAZING job at creating a fun and engaging story. The pacing is perfect, the plot is complex, but not confusing. Yes, it brought up questions as I tried to put the pieces together, but the questions kept me hooked and left me craving more! I couldn't put it down! And I was absolutely screaming at the end!

All of the characters are unique, and lovable. I fell in love with characters immediately upon meeting them. They instantly charmed me! These characters just feel so much that you can't help but feel for them too. The number of times I was clutching my heart during this story- insane. Everyone was just so lovable, and I want to adopt them all, give them hugs, and carry them in my pocket forever. These characters felt like friends to me, and when I'm not reading about them, I miss them.

The story telling and writing itself is beautiful. There were lines and moments in the book that left me speechless. They made me feel things. I can't even put them in this review, because I want you guys to experience them for the first time in the story. They're powerful.

Also, I love all of the representation in the book! Representation is SO important, especially now. This is the first time I've read a book with a protagonist having a life-altering medical condition, and this is the first book I've read with a character with Vitiligo. It's so important to make sure these experiences are normal, and Emma Hill does an amazing job at giving them a new voice.

Also, can we appreciate that for ONCE we have a fantasy novel where the adults aren't dead/missing/gone/abusive? The parents and family are well developed characters in their own right! They're not plot devices; they're an integral piece of the story! It's so refreshing to see!

And a book about theatre kids is so special! Theatre kids are the ultimate people in my opinion. I really don't know why no one else centers theatre kids in their stories! Theatre kids are the PERFECT people for a fantasy story, so THANK YOU Emma Hill for centering your story around us! as a theatre kid myself, this book was so special.

All For Mage and Melody truly is a magical read! You will love it, your kids will love it, it's perfect! It's now one of my favorite books ever! So, what are you doing??? Go order it! Buy it! Read it!

And if you don't, your soul will be sacrificed to the theatre gods.

I LOVED this book! It surprised me in all the right ways, from the emotional depth that still remained appropriate for an MG/YA audience, to the twist at the end! Tali’s journey is one of finding out he’s still likable despite having a severe medical condition, and Melody’s is one of being humbled. It’s a beautiful balancing act and so well executed!

I loved the family dynamics too. Both Tali and Melody have extended families who are very involved in their lives, and parents who love them dearly but don’t always know what to do. This is something I haven’t seen much in books for this age group. They mostly seem peer-centric, so this was lovely.

I also loved the magic system. It wasn’t the flashy elemental kind, but rather mind-based. I loved the way Emma explored the psychological ramifications!

In summary, it was excellent on every front. Highly recommend!

I LOVED this book so much!!!! If you are a fan of Percy Jackson I BEG you to read this, you will love it! It has a very unique magic system, theatre kids, heroes and chosen ones!

Emma is a fantastic storyteller, her writing is so beautiful and her characters so incredibly vivid! She touches on themes of family and friendship with such love and intention that it’s truly hard not to fall for every single one of her characters!

I loved Tali and Melody’s friendship and how their relationship developed throughout the book. It also has very strong Annabeth x Percy vibes. I really appreciated how they both in very different ways struggled with the idea of what it means to be a hero and I cannot wait to see more of them and their journey!

After that cliffhanger of an ending, I cannot wait for book 2!

One of my all time favorite reads!! I binged this book and the only reason I didn't finish it in one day was because of other responsibilities, but I seriously wanted to!

The characters are relatable, and really well developed and I'm super excited to see more of them in the next books! And the ending twist I was almost able to guess, but that only made it more satisfying and enjoyable to see happen!

I cannot recommend this book enough!

All For Mage and Melody is an exciting delve into the world of mind readers and high school theater class! Tali and Melody are quite the dynamic duo as they battle high school bullies, homecoming, their upcoming "Alice in Wonderland" production, and an evil villain lying in the shadows. I enjoyed every second of this adventure and recommend it to lovers of Percy Jackson!

A family-friendly YA/Teen read. Which is really nice when there are so many dark or inappropriate books on the market. I would have no trouble recommending this book. I also like the teacher resources at the end! I’m not a teen or a teacher, but I would happily recommend this book to them.
