Jack, a total stranger, saves Summer from kidnappers and promises to get her home safely, explaining that his military skills will make eluding her pursuers easy. As they travel, camping, hiding and sharing cramped spaces, they fall in love and plan a future together.
The people after Summer know every road they take, every move they make, though Jack still insists he can get Summer home safely and that they will become husband and wife.
But her kidnappers are closing in. Home is far away. They won’t make it. So Jack makes a side trip for more effective weapons.
Summer is stunned to realize how skilled and truly deadly he is. He’s as dangerous as the terrorists after her. Which makes her wonder…
Was his appearance at the precisely right moment to save her a coincidence? Or is he in league with her kidnappers?
Florence's stories begin as simple tales of contemporary life, often in small towns or the wilderness she knows so well. Where they go from there is what makes them special. There is always a strong sense of place. Often they skew reality slightly by crossing genres to contain paranormal, sci/fi, or fantasy elements. There is usually a romance and there are always characters her readers like and would enjoy having as friends.
Most of all, there is a story because what Florence does best is tell stories. Well plotted stories that carry the characters towards a logical conclusion that always includes a happy ending. Stories that shine light on the human condition while they celebrate the world we live in. Stories that her readers relate to and remember long after the reading is over.
She writes about people who are as normal as apple pie (most of them, anyway) who unexpectedly find themselves in the middle of situations ranging from the heartwarming through the difficult and all the way to the horrendous. But Florence's characters choose to act instead of running away. In the process, they survive, thrive, overcome whatever obstacles large or small are thrown in front of them, and while they are at it, they find time to fall in love.
Florence was born in the city and has lived in the suburbs, small towns, the country and the wilderness, where she still lives with her husband and a cowardly cat named Smoke.
At various times in her career she's been a confession writer, a copywriter, a ghost writer and an editor. She writes short stories, novellas and novels. Her work has been categorized as romance, science-fiction, fantasy, mainstream and eco-fiction, to name a few genres that it fits beautifully into.
A clean, fast-paced romantic suspense with equal parts survival thriller and emotional awakening.
Florence Witkop’s Saving Summer opens with a bang — an Alaskan dig site, a sudden threat, and a heroine whose quiet courage keeps you rooting for her from the first page. When Summer Maxwell is forced to flee danger and finds herself relying on the steady strength of former Army Ranger Jack Callahan, the story unfolds as both a survival adventure and a slow-building romance.
What I appreciated most is that this book keeps the focus on character and courage. The wilderness journey reads like an old-fashioned road adventure where trust, decency, and quick thinking carry the day. Jack is a grounded, believable protector. Summer’s growth from startled volunteer to capable survivor feels genuine.
Witkop’s writing is clean and uncluttered, her pacing tight, and the story maintains suspense without resorting to explicit content or heavy-handed darkness. For readers who enjoy romantic thrillers with action, scenery, and a quiet moral center, Saving Summer is a solid, satisfying read — and proof that not every rescue story has to rely on superhuman heroics to keep you turning pages.
3.5 stars from me. Not a bad read but it really dragged in the middle until we finally figured out why the MFC was being chased. Also, she and the MMC fell in love after only about 3 days and knew pretty much nothing about each other. There was barely any conversation or getting to know one another. But it was entertaining and a clean romance read.
“Saving Summer” is a tight, suspenseful “who’s doing it?” run from the bad guys novel. Mingled with romance, it is a page-turning delight. Well crafted, well-written, the story pulls you along as you root for Summer and Jack to escape mysterious goons intent on kidnapping Summer. Who is behind it? Why? And who wins in the end? Engaging story.
