For three years, Rede has been searching Canada for those who ordered the murders of his wife and children.
Now back in England, he has inherited an Earldom from his cousin George, and is close to finding the investors who ordered the deaths in an attempt to destroy Rede’s fur trading enterprise. He travels to his country estate in Longford, West Gloucestershire, to be close to the investigation.
He does not need the distraction of an overwhelming longing for the lovely widow who lives in one of the cottages he owns. A widow, moreover, with a small daughter whose distinctive eyes mark her as George’s child.
For six years, from the night Anne blackmailed George at arrow-point for an income and a place to live, she has been in hiding with her sisters and daughter.
She hides from the scandal of her daughter’s conception. More importantly, she hides from the Earl of Selby, who has sinister plans for the sisters. He no longer has legal rights as guardian to the older sisters, but the youngest sister is still only 18. He cannot be allowed to find her.
The last thing Anne needs is an inconvenient attraction to the local Earl. Rede is everything she has learned not to trust: a man, a peer, a Redepenning. If he finds out who she is, she may lose everything.
As their attraction builds against a backdrop of the village Whitsun Week festivities, several accidents make Rede believe his enemies have found him, and leads Anne to wonder whether Selby has found her.
Have you ever wanted something so much you were afraid to even try? That was me ten years ago.
For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be a novelist. I even started dozens of stories, over the years.
But life kept getting in the way. A seriously ill child who required years of therapy; a rising mortgage that led to a full-time job; six children, my own chronic illness… the writing took a back seat.
As the years passed, the fear grew. If I didn't put my stories out there in the market, I wouldn't risk making a fool of myself. I could keep the dream alive if I never put it to the test.
Then my mother died. That great lady had waited her whole life to read a novel of mine, and now it would never happen.
So I faced my fear and changed it--told everyone I knew I was writing a novel. Now I'd make a fool of myself for certain if I didn't finish.
My first book came out to excellent reviews in December 2014, and the rest is history. Many books, lots of positive reviews, and a few awards later, I feel foolish for not starting earlier.
I write historical fiction with a large helping of romance, a splash of Regency, and a twist of suspense. I then try to figure out how to slot the story into a genre category. I'm mad keen on history, enjoy what happens to people in the crucible of a passionate relationship, and love to use a good mystery and some real danger as mechanisms to torture my characters.
Dip your toe into my world with one of my lunch-time reads collections or a novella, or dive into a novel. And let me know what you think.
This is the second book I have read by Jude Knight. The first, the novella, Candle’s Christmas Chair was my first introduction to both Jude and her writing, and the impetus for an invitation to join a fledgling group of Regency writers. Her writing somehow manages to be both lush and controlled. She creates lovely, descriptive scenes that open up the place and time without overwhelming with historical detail, and the use of language is period-appropriate and provides an “old-fashioned” flavor that lingers, especially in her characters who are not aristocrats.
And on the topic of aristocrats, Knight is able to create upper-class characters whose role in the story is perfectly placed in the narrative. For instance, her heroes and their sidekicks are never unapproachable, as are many in books of this genre, yet her villains exemplify their class in ways that are intimidating and ruthlessly aware of their own power. (If I have one critique of the work, it is that I would have liked to see more of the villains.)
I am not going to go into a long storyline here, because plenty will do so, but I will say that the twists and turns were unexpected and well-paced, in both love story and action, and the obstacles were realistic and never forced for plot’s sake. Her hero, Rede, needs no love affair to distract from his purpose, a former love to avenge, giving him an authentic reason to avoid his growing passion for his love interest. The heroine, Anne, is self-aware, protective of her family, and well able to stand on her own two feet, making herself an example for the younger women in her family to follow suit. At no time does she need the hero, which makes their eventual happy-ever-after that much more satisfying.
This was such a captivating read, set in a village , not too far from Bristol. It had all the essence of the village from neighbourly people to the gossips and the various activities that is village life. The story centres around Anne Forsythe, her family and Stephen Redepenning, Earl of Chirbury ( Rede). Rede is unlike the previous earls and is a man of honour. He is also handsome and brave. Anne is a strong woman who cares deeply for her family and will do anything for them. There are many secrets to unfold and a mystery concerning who was behind the death’s of Rede’s family. This was a story I just had to keep reading, right to the exciting ending. There were also a number of interesting secondary characters and I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Bravo Judith Knight! Stephen Redepenning, or Rede as he prefers, is everything readers want in a regency hero: protective, responsible, determined, honest, and in charge. He enters the stage from his previous life as a fur entrepreneur in Canada with more than his share of pain and grief. His wife and children have been murdered and he is determined to have vengeance, or as he insists, justice.
If one hero satisfies, the author gives us more: John Price, Rede’s heroic right-hand man; the wounded Major Alex Redepenning, his cousin; and David Wakefield his friend. More books must be forthcoming. The book is chock full of vividly drawn and appealing secondary characters, an entire village full of them. She has a positive gift for bringing these people to life. Rede's servants are an intrepid and appealing bunch. The villagers range for mouthy gossips to folks just struggling to get by.
Even the villains are vivid. Of the collection of badies, only George Redepenning has paricular redeeming qualities, but none of them are cardboard. The Baroness is the Cruella diVille of the countryside, all the prey is worse than little dogs.
Anne Forsythe, the heroine, is smart and brave. Her prowess with a bow and arrow and willingness to participate in the climactic battle are marvelous. Only occasionally did this reader want to give her a firm shake and say, “For goodness sake tell Rede what is going on!”
Rooting interests about and the book moves along at a good pace. All in all an emotionally satisfying read.
Set in the early 19th century, it is not my usual era (I focus on the Tudors), but it was a wonderful time. I had forgotten how I much I enjoy Regency Era fiction, with its gallant men and strong women. And Jude Knight adds a mystery to boot.
I am in awe of the author’s plotting, how she weaves the plotlines together in a carefully building crescendo. I am in the middle of a much simpler book, so I well know how difficult it is to bring these story elements together properly.
In all, thoroughly enjoyable. “Capital” I think they may have said back then.
I loved this book! I especially like how Jude Knight creates characters who are strong and resolute, endearing and admirable, and women who take charge of their own destiny and don't need a man to rescue them. In this story a young woman's daughter and her schoolmate are kidnapped, and her mother and Rutledge whom she calls "Rockledge" must go to find them and rescue them. Knight's characters are intriguing with many layers to them, and this is a throroughly entertaining love story unlike any other. Check it out for a great read! I look forward to reading this entire series and Knight's other books too.
It's with the proofreader as I write this comment. It's my first full-length baby, so I love it, of course. I may feel differently in a few weeks when it's released! On pre-release 2 March, and published 1 April.
I was blown away by this story. I had to close the app and walk away at the end of it. I could not compose my review immediately. I needed a few hours to mourn and reflect.
I read Alex's story a few days ago and do not remember it reflecting on the horrors experienced in this story. This story put me through the ringer. The antagonists were pure evil. I worried for the good guys constantly. "Accidents" piled up. Rape was casual. Girls disappear, never to be seen again. Villagers were mean and petty.
Yet, at the center of the story was a man and a woman. Rede is a man focused on vengeance for the family that was cruelly wrenched from him in the wilds of Canada. Anne is a woman with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her one goal is to survive under the radar until her youngest sister reaches her majority. Neither of them is looking for love.
Jude Knight here creates a world where the lords of the manor have taken their pleasure where they will over the generations. This penchant has resulted in certain family traits appearing around the surrounding area in farm hands, stable boys, tavern wenches, chamber maids, you name it. Even Anne's daughter, Daisy, sports the Redepenning look. As you can imagine, right or wrong, trouble ensues.
After reading this story, I am chomping at the bit to get to David and Prue's story. There was so much going on in Alex's story with Susan, that I need to read hers as well.
Back to the reason for my emotional upheaval in this book. Well, I am not a reviewer who spoils a book for others. You will just have to read it for yourself. I will simply say that this book was very well-written. The characters were well developed. The relationships felt real. The emotions were palpable. The action was exhilarating. The villains needed killing. I wanted to dish out some biblical justice on a few of them. Yes, there were multiple villains all acting for separate causes. It was exhausting!
Stephen Redepenning aka Rede, the Earl of Chirbury wants the beautiful widow, Anne Forsythe, from the moment he first sees her. She lives rent-free in a cottage belonging to the estate, courtesy of his predecessor and cousin, George. And her daughter’s distinctive eyes mark the little girl as George’s child. Anne Forsythe has good cause to be wary of men, peers and members of the Redepenning family. The Earl of Chirbury is all three, and a distraction she does not need. If she can hide her sisters until the youngest turns 21, they will be safe from her uncle’s sinister plans. I know that if I start to read one of the author’s books I won’t be able to put it down & this is no exception. Beautifully written with characters that leap out of the page at you. The pace of the story is very good & flows effortlessly. There are plenty of secrets & also Rede needs to find his family’s killer. As in lots of books that contain secrets I shouted several times talk to each other. A lovely series starter, thanks to Booksprout for the copy.

Now in England, he must repair the damage George has caused to the estates, including the Longford Estate, where a tenant has resided for years rent free. Curious of this tenant’s situation, he eventually makes his way to her cottage, where he meets and finds himself intrigued by the beautiful and intelligent Anne, the lady who was under the guardianship of his cousin George and mother of a Redepenning. Can our heroine learn to love and give her heart at last? Open A Farewell to Kindness and come with me on a journey back in time to the Georgian and Regency periods and delve into the suspense, longing and passion of the characters… I welcome you into their lives for but a brief moment in time… Jude Knight’s writing is impeccable, her way of expressing detail truly ignites the senses of the reader, where one truly goes back in time, smells the delicious foods cooking, hears the sounds of the carriages rolling along the cobblestone streets of London or the dirt roads of small quaint villages. The reader cannot help but feel the emotions invoked by the characters and sympathize with their plights. Ms. Knight has truly given the readers an historical accuracy in her writing, she pays great detail to the period in which the story takes place, to the historical events of the time and she has truly delved deep into her research which is shown through the scenes and depictions of the buildings, wardrobe, food, cultural events, social expectations, etc. This is my first book that I read of Jude Knight’s and I was just awestruck by this phenomenal masterpiece. I read it from cover to cover and could not put it down. She keeps her reader on the edge of their seats awaiting what comes next! This is truly a work of art and I invite you, once again, to open A Farewell to Kindness.
📒 This is intriguing, suspenseful and intense. Rede is generous and caring, he's also determined and relentless in his vengeance. Anne is strong, responsible and bold. While on the hunt for the men responsible for the deaths of his wife and children, he inherits a title. Taking his duties as the Earl is important to Rede, but he won't stop trying to get vengeance while doing his duty. But when he finds Anne at one of his estates, not paying rent, he can't stop thinking about her. Anne is in hiding from her cousin, trying to protect her youngest sister from his machinations. She wants nothing to do with any man, but she finds herself constantly, and irritatingly, thinking about him. But there is more to their stories, and that more is going to cause problems. I was completely engrossed in the story, wondering what was going to happen next. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
The writing is refreshing! Some books I read are just too obvious. I can figure out the good and bad guys right away and that gets rather tedious. This book, however, kept me guessing, kept me wondering and wanting to find out how it all turns out. The scene settings were well written, I felt the level of description, whether it be clothing or furniture, even places, was very well done. Not too much to be distracting, but just enough that I could picture what the author was describing, but, enough that I could imagine things in my own way.The characters were well rounded, not saints, but real people, so to speak. Altogether, it was a great romance with excellent elements of mystery! In this book, there are characters you will love, those you will loathe and those you will despise! There are many reasons why. Red Redepenning is a gentleman in the true sense of the word. Yes, there is revenge in his heart, but there is room for so much more. Anne is an innocent but not without resources. A good aim can come in very handy it seems. The previous Earl of Chirbury wronged Anne in more ways than one so she has forced his hand. He has paid his penance and I think he got off easy.
The New Earl of Chirbury, The 8th, Stephen Edward John Redepenning is known as Rede to his friends. He knows nothing of Anne or why one of his tenants pays no rent. He inherited the title while living in Canada as a fur trader. When he returned, he found out he was the new Earl, with a seat in the House of Lords, properties, with tenants and servants all in a shocking state of disarray! He will have a long journey ahead of him to figure out the mess of papers and people left behind by his feckless cousin George, the 7th Earl.
Anne Forsythe has been in hiding in a cottage in Longford. She along with her sisters and her beautiful little girl with their maid Hannah. Anne is not so innocent after all. She has been hiding her daughter, along with her sister, who is not at the age of majority yet, and who is the target of a ruthless cousin, who happens to share guardianship. he has the audacity to want to marry her to his own son. Her dowry is a nice enough reason to do so. Anne knows what the son is like, and the cousin for that matter, she has no wish to let her sister anywhere near him. So they made a new life here in Longford. Now the Earl of Chirbury is coming down to inspect his property and this could spell disaster for Anne and her family. Her child has the distinctive "Redepenning" eyes!
Many strange accidents happen to the Earl and the people close to him. He wonders if it is related to things that happened before he left Canada.
I really loved this book. Sweet, mysterious, and fun to read! Some sad parts that made me stop for a minute. But You can't have a good book without some hardships. I enjoyed the characters, but Anne was my favorite. She has an indomitable spirit that I wish I had.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good Regency Romance that is not so easy, with some intrigue and fun.
Also, check out Jude Knights free novella Candle's Christmas Chair!
Anne has spent 6yrs building a respectful life for her daughter, sisters, and herself. She doesn't need a new Earl coming and asking questions. Rede, the new Earl doesn't have time to waste on a widow living on his estate because he needs to seek his revenge for the murder of his wife and his children. Yet they both seem to be drawn to each other.
Jude Knight writes in such a way that her words wrap around you and sucks you right into the middle of her world. You are right there attending all the festivities and you're so excited to turn the page to find out who will win the next contest. The suspense of finding the villains keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. The twist were a total shock to me and usually I can figure them out rather quickly. Then we have the budding romance of Anne and Rede who are very strong, likable and stubborn characters , you just can't help but loving them both. There are also many other well written characters that you will love, like, adore, hate and want to read more about . It's a very good thing that this is going to be a series!
Stephen Edward John (Rede) Redepenning, 8th Earl of Chirbury is bent on revenge or justice for the deaths of his wife and daughters in Canada three years earlier. He has hired a thief taker, David Wakefield friends since Eaton to find out who and why they were killed. He is slowly destroying them causing problems, but he wants more. He just inherited his title from his cousin George who has made a mess of the earldom. Rede hs for the last four months spent time cleaning up the mess, dealing with Parliament, his own businesses and his quest for justice. Anne Forsythe, a widow has lived at Longford for the last six years has lived in a cottage rent free. She lives with her daughter, Daisy and sisters Meg, Kitty and Ruth and has secrets. It is not long that the Earl's revenge and Anne's secrets are connected. The story kept my interest to the end. I could not believe who was involved and why. All I know is that I this is a series that I will read. I would love to find out what happens to the other characters in the story.
Wonderful book! I really enjoyed this novel set in the 1800s, with the earl Rede Redpenning and the lovely widow Anne. There are moments of suspense and a mystery to solve of the murder of the earl's first family. There are times with romance and the growing love of this couple. I liked Anne's family and all of the daily matters and the shocking events in their lives. It's an enjoyable story that I couldn't wait to get back to when I had other responsibilities to tend to. I highly recommend this book, and I'm definitely looking forward to more by this author, Jude Knight. Thanks to goodreads and the publisher for providing this complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

From the first page, Jude Knight takes the reader on an adventure that doesn’t stop until the end. When Rede and Anne meet its tension and wondering how these two are going to get together. I love the opening scene between these two.
I did get a bit lost with the minor characters thrown in. Sometimes, the pace of the novel was too fast and I wish the plot would have slowed down a bit. It also felt like the story was too short - another 50+ pages narrowed in on the hero & heroine would have pushed this to 5 stars.
Overall a good read and I’m looking forward to more novels from this author.
You know a book is going to be complex when it starts with a long and complicated cast of characters. There is definitely much going on in this book, perhaps too much. The book begins with a somewhat surprising confrontation between the heroine and her guardian. I read a lot of historical romance, and I don't think that the way the heroine acted at this point would be true to the times (unless she was a very unusual lady). I did like both the hero and the heroine. They had elaborate backstories, of which we only learned the full extent as the story went on; this is good, as I don't like an information dump at the start of a book or in the chapters where a new viewpoint character starts. The author does write some characters in dialect, which I found a little distracting at times. I felt like this book was a bit too long and had too much going on. It could have been condensed for a better read in several ways; for instance, there were multiple scenes which I would consider to be everyday moments, with no conflict, crisis, or climax; if scenes don’t have those elements, they should at least tell us something about the character, or preferably, move the plot along. While the author was good at showing slice-of-life moments, sometimes I thought the descriptions went on for a little too long, which slows down the action of the story. The characters are engaging, though--and I think I have a grasp of the full cast!--so I am interested to see how the series evolves.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
A charming start to the series. Anne and her three sisters and daughter are in hiding from a the Earl of Selby their cousin who inherited when their brother was killed in a duel. The earl wants to marry his son to one of the sisters for her inheritance, and plans to get rid of the other sisters so he can gain control of those too. But Anne has another secret, she blackmailed the previous Earl of Chirbury into giving them a home rent free, and a large sum of cash to keep her family safe. Now the new Earl is due to visit the estate and lives on, and she has no idea what he'll do with them, especially as her daughter has a strong resemblance to the Earl family.
reds now earl of Chirbury,is set on revenge for the murder of his wife and cbildren, but on meeting Anne has an uncomfortable desire to be near her, but she refused to have anything to do with him.
Quite enjoyed this, a bit too much death for my liking, particularly of the 'goodies'. Also a huge number of names which were not always easy too identify, particularly when a character is only mentioned once in the book about an outcome, when we didn't know there was an issue. Spent a lot of time going back to see what had happened before, with no results. Also too many threads left unanswered..... Or up in the aor.
While taking up his duties in England, after having made his fortune and a life in Canada, Rede Renedpenning meets an unidentified and unpaying tenant in one of his estate's cottages - the lovely Anne Forsythe, her 3 sisters and her daughter (who bears a striking resemblance to the late Duke). As Rede works to straighten out the records mess left by his cousin, he is drawn to Anne. She in turn is drawn to Rede but will not let herself love him order to protect her sisters and their secret. While seeking revenge against those who killed his Canadian family, setting things right with his tenants, finding missing village girls and seeking to break up a white slavery ring, Rede fights not only his growing feelings for Anne but also fights to protect her while trying to convince her to marry him. What Anne's secret is, and how it ties in to all of this is exciting, a bit sad and paves the way for secondary characters to have their own story told. This is not totally clean however the love scene is well done - mild heat.
This is the first book I have read by this author but I will definitely be reading more. The book charts the story of Rede and Ann. Rede is the Earl of Chirbury and is driven by his quest for revenge while taking on his new title, land and tenants. Ann is hiding from her guardian to protect his sisters. There are many well written supporting characters and complex relationships coupled with lots of action and some brutal actions which seem to have been common in the era. An enjoyable book that is well worth reading. Excellent ending and epilogue. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A true masterpiece. Jude Knight is an interesting writer she gives an old-fashioned feeling or flavor to her books. This one gives the reader a protective and in charge hero who has suffered a great loss but there is not just him but other strong men of character in the story. Then you have a strong heroine. All of this is with-in a powerfully written piece that you will find hard to put down yet you will need to give yourself a moment or two from time to time it is so emotional. High praise for this period piece I highly recommend. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Wow! This is a lengthy story packed with so much, on so many levels. There is intense emotion, tons of action, danger, unimaginable horrors and one major heartbreak. You will be introduced to a country village wherein four women have been hiding from unethical relatives for the past five or six years. Rede, who is the earl with a home in that village, has a multitude of family members visiting and is hot on the trail of the villians who ordered his wife and children killed. There are multiple storylines that converge to make one exciting and emotional book….a wonderful introduction to the rest of the series.
This is my first time reading anything by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This is a historical mystery romance story that has a lot of drama, emotion, suspense, twists and turns in it. The main characters are fairly well described and there are a lot of sub characters. There are some steamy scenes in this story also. I enjoyed it and shall look out for more by this author in the future.

I loved this historical romantic suspense novel. The characters are well developed and described, both the good and the evil. The storyline is excellent and flows well. It is full of action, suspense, intrigue, and romance. The descriptions of village life in the Regency era are very well written and were obviously thoroughly researched. I highly recommend this book.

he has buried his family and now he is out for revenge. They are hiding from danger when they meet and they share a liking but it will not be easy. They have a common enemy and the enemy is coming closer. Can they work together to stay safe? See how they get on

Allow two days for this PG Regency mystery romance set chiefly in the small village of Longford in West Gloucestershire, England with all the usual villains, an offer for "a village of pure gold," white slavery, and skullduggery, but do NOT read in public as chortles will ensue. I had an ARC via Boooksprout and this is my voluntary review.
I'm not sure where Jude Knight keeps coming up with the ideas for her books, but I am so glad that she does. Each one is unique and different. This one has a main plot with several other subplots. Jude includes an explanation of each character at the beginning of the book. I referred to it several times as I was turning each page. I found Anne Forsythe to be engaging and sincere. Her only concern is keeping her sisters and daughter safe. Rene is looking for revenge for the killing of his family, but he has a warm heart. This is their story. Some reviewers are saying that the book is too long and detailed. I actually loved that about this book. Too many times, I have read a book where the author rushes the plot just to get to the end. Jude takes her time and with her words, makes me have a picture of the characters, the settings and the scenes in my mind. That is truly the mark of a wonderful author for me.
