Congratulations on being nominated as one of the best thrillers for the Goodreads Choice Awards! This book was definitely one of the best reads of the year! I sense a delicious, mind-bending concept here: Knives Out meets Succession!
Welcome to the Merton family mansion, located in Brecken Hill, upstate New York. Dear Fred and Sheila Merton have no idea that this will be their last family dinner with their beloved children—who can barely stand them. What begins as an ordinary Easter dinner quickly escalates when Fred starts expressing his deep disappointment in his kids. They leave the dinner in a rage, including Irena, their caretaker of over two decades, who stands up for them.
This is a very dysfunctional family: an oligarch and powerful father figure who takes pleasure in tormenting his children to boost his ego. Three children who have turned against each other, fueled by rivalry, anger, and frustration. And then, one of them takes matters into their own hands: brutally murdering their parents before Fred can play his final trick by changing his will and leaving half his fortune to his sister—their vindictive, cutthroat Aunt Audrey.
Unfortunately, the knives aren’t out, because poor Irena, with good intentions, has already washed the murder weapon, cleaning away the traces of blood and the killer’s fingerprints. Having raised these children, Irena knows how much they suffered under their controlling, monstrous father, who harbored a dark secret. Yes, Fred was the big bad wolf, and Sheila—silent throughout his terrible treatment of the children—paid the ultimate price for her complicity: being strangled to death.
Now, three traumatized children remain. One—or all—may have inherited their father’s psychopathic tendencies, leading to this brutal crime.
Dan, the emotionally and mentally weakest link of the trio, reminds me a lot of Succession’s Kendall. Targeted by his father from the start, Dan was mentally and physically abused, his hard work discarded when his father sold the company, leaving him penniless and unemployed. His last ill-fated business venture left him high and dry, and his father humiliates him by refusing to lend him money, taking pleasure in his suffering. As the middle child and the only boy, Dan is neither parent’s favorite, left excluded and simmering with rage. Could he be the killer? Why not?
Catherine, the eldest, is hardworking, conservative, and conventional—a doctor and her mother’s favorite child. But when her father plans to sell their childhood home, Catherine’s peaceful demeanor shifts. Could she lie without flinching to cover her tracks? Absolutely. She’s cool as a cucumber—calculated, focused. Could she be a sociopath? Why not?
Then there’s Jenna, the youngest—artsy, unconventional, rebellious, and attention-seeking. She’s already blacklisted for her controversial sculptures. Fred plans to cut off her financial support, a decision he announces to the entire family. Could she lash out violently? With her uncontrollable temper, it’s possible.
Both children are lying about their alibis. Both could have returned to the house at the time of the murders, and both have motives.
And then there’s Aunt Audrey, vindictive and deeply irritating, who knows the family’s secrets and is livid at being excluded from half of Fred’s wealth. She’s out for blood and believes one of the children killed her brother. But is she right?
Are the children the only heirs? Or are there others who could be suspects in this deadly game?
Whodunnit? Can you guess which one of them is the psychopath? Or could it be… all of them?
I’m rounding up my rating from 3.5 stars to 4!
This fast-paced, riveting, and intriguing page-turner features a great whodunnit premise and introduces us to many infuriating characters—even the police officers were annoying! The only likable character was Irena. Audrey was particularly punchable—more disturbing than the kids themselves!
I highly recommend this book to the author’s fans and to readers who love action-packed, exciting thrillers.
