Nonce!

Rate this book
Nestled between the purple haze-infused sexual revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s, and the anarchic chaos of punk rock, something strange happened in the world of rock music. Glam Rock fused high camp theatricals with driven anthems and fist-pumping tunes. Appealing to the young and impressionable, the movement even dragged in many of contemporary music’s more relevant names.

However, the sins of the period are also well documented, with Gary Glitter and DJ Jimmy Saville being publicly exposed some years later. One name which doesn’t get mentioned as often is Danny Dazzler.

Dazzler’s flame of fame arguably burned brightest in his own mind, but after a short-lived moment in the spotlight, his fall from grace was so odious the music industry and mass media conspired to starve him of the thing he craved most: publicity.

Now, for the first time ever, and more than forty years after he first crawled into the public’s psyche, his story will be told.

Nonce! is a no-holds-barred exposé of Glam Rock’s nastiest specimen.

WARNING! NOT for the easily offended!!

I'm not sure what I expected from this book, I mean I'm a huge Caffrey fan so I had an idea there would be a lot of wrongness in this, and there was, but it was also hilarious, you know, one of those where you feel guilty for finding the stuff funny. But I grew up in the 70s and 80s and you could laugh at more in those days without people getting offended! 🤷I mean, this was still an uncomfortable read in places, but necessary, I think, in order for you to experience the full effect. The discomfort and the horror WILL have an impact on you, but I think it makes this book so much more powerful and thought provoking because of it.

In true Caffey style, you'll be shocked one minute, grossed out the next and then howling with guilty laughter! There are deeply disturbing moments, (one scene in particular was pretty hard to stomach, and made me pause for a bit), and moments of hilarity, (like the nicknames, for instance, “Chinny Reckon” 😂), but overall this was a lot more serious, deeper and darker than his usual work, and it'll stay with you. I also don't think I’ve hated a character as much as Danny Dazzler. What a fucking vile excuse for a human being!

1973…. Despite being due on TV the next morning, Danny Dazzler invites two very young girls back to his room to party. He sends his PA out for some cocaine to liven things up, especially the girls, but whatever Rufus returns with is something else, and Danny wakes up the next day unsure of exactly what went on the night before. But the show must go on and so he takes a few extra hits of the marching powder, leaving his mess, and his career behind.

1975…. After his massive cock-up a couple of years ago, Danny is determined to return to his showbiz status. With an answer for every incident he is accused of and a nose full of coke, he continues to claim his innocence. First though, he needs to establish himself firmly around the globe. He is soon up to his old tricks and nonce-ense however, until things take a decidedly deserved turn…

1977…. After an undefined spell in an Albanian prison, Danny is freed, so to speak..
Glam rock is dead now, the punk rockers have stolen the limelight, and once he realizes what that means for him, it excites him all over again. He can't believe his luck, and Danny and the Diabolics are born, along with a plan to make the ultimate comeback! And what a comeback! Live on air, he reveals his true persona and from thereon in, he takes things to the very limit, and beyond….

1978…. Danny meets Rudolph at a counseling session, a meeting that will ultimately bring about his demise, and the fear of his future causes Danny to take drastic action, and the easy way out of his deplorable life!

So, from glam rock, to punk rock, to rock bottom, dare you join Danny and his band on a depraved tour of self destruction?

Glam rock has tried to erase Danny Dazzler, a huge star whose fall from the pedestal of public adoration was shocking and deserved. Now 40yrs on this is the story they tried to hide, his crimes exposed in all their depravity.

Danny is a real piece of shit and will go to any lengths and I mean ANY to rejuvenate glam rock and bring it back into the mainstream. He is also an idiot, some of the things he does are completely mad! He is hateful with no redeeming qualities and you find yourself desperate that he will get his punishment ASAP!

This is explicit and although necessary for the story to be dragged into the light to die, please bear that in mind when you pick this book up.

When real horror walks the streets, the reading experience is very, very uncomfortable.

Danny Dazzler, the less spoken about ‘King’ of Glam Rock with the same predilections of a well known artist is depraved, delusional and downright dangerous.

It is rare that a fictional character evokes genuine disgust and hatred in me; the depiction of his acts are necessary to engender such a response, never gratuitous but downright horrific reading.

It goes without saying that you should consider your own triggers before opening this book.

I owe Caffrey everything for allowing me to read this book early!

We follow a rock star who is willing to do anything to make glam rock popular again, and I mean ANYTHING!

Our main character is truly a piece of shit person, but it was entertaining to read all of the dialogue from him. I was also intrigued with just how deep of a hole he keeps digging himself in. Some of his actions just made my jaw drop!

This was an extremely fun read and I enjoyed all of the music/band references!

As an American, I had no idea what "Nonce" meant going into this, but now I know, haha.

Peter Caffrey, NONCE!

Well, this certainly wasn't for the weak stomached, nor the easily offended. I would have expected anything less from Peter, either!

The subject matter is incredibly dark and repulsive, but through witty storytelling I still found myself laughing out loud along the way.

Danny Dazzled is a glam rock star with an over inflated ego not to mention a lover of young girls. Once again Peter gives us the perfect mix of a dark uncomfortable subject and laugh out loud humour. A must for Caffrey fans.

This book is gross and the protaganist, Danny Dazzler is even more gross! And I loved it! This is a fantastic book about a "star" using his fame to enable him to perform despicable acts. It is sad that with what we see in the media this fictional account may not be too far from the truth.

Really enjoyed this, a bit dark and nasty, but enough humour sprinkled throughout to stop the subject matter becoming too depressing.

Once again although the subject matter may be questionable the writing is impeccable.
We've all heard about celebrities like this and it's too real for its own good.
