Rate this book
Jerusa Phoenix never thought she would experience anything more shocking than being able to see ghosts. Then she met Silvanus. The young man with unearthly eyes, who seems to be able to read her thoughts, is handsome, powerful, and she is sure of one thing: he isn't human.

But Silvanus isn't the only mysterious creature to come to town.

Jerusa, ignoring the warnings of her ghost companion, Alicia, finds herself face to face with a group of vampires. Silvanus tries to save Jerusa, but she is wounded in the battle. Silvanus kills one of the vampires, but to all their horror, he rises again to become something far worse . . . a mindless flesh-eater known as a savage.

Jerusa is transformed into a vampire to save her life. Silvanus is poisoned by savage blood and when he vanishes before their eyes, Jerusa realizes something else. Silvanus isn't a vampire, either.

Jerusa, along with the ghost Alicia, must join with the other blood-drinkers to hunt down and destroy the savage before he can make other savages, proving that she is worthy to be a vampire. As she embarks on this dangerous mission, she can't help thinking of Silvanus. Where is he? Who is he? What is he?

This author is becoming one of my favorites. Let's face it, vampires have been done over and over and over again, yet he found a new angle to approach it all. And what an angle that is!!! Even though there is a lot of horror and suspense, it is by no means too gory to read, and I love gory. This book is fantastic and I am dieing to read the next one. The plot is very well developed, although at one point I was a tad annoyed with Jerusa not listening to warnings, but without that, we might not have a story. Gabe is very well versed and weaves a nice web around you. You only know what he wants you to know. The plot moves along at a great pace, not feeling rushed nor do I feel like he is dragging it out, just perfect really. The ending, although an open ending to some degree, still leaves you with a finished story but definitely wanting to read the next one in the series.

His main characters are just amazing. As I said Jerusa was at one point a tad annoying but overall she is really a gem of a character. You can't but help feeling for her and love seeing her metamorphosis into a strong female heroin. The other main characters really complement it each other well with Silvanus probably being my favorite, and he is shrouded in mystery. If anything, the only bad part is, I seriously wanted more of Silvanus, but I am sure there will be plenty more to come from him.

This is a great, fresh approach to vampires and I can't wait until his next book comes out. This is one great author with a bright future in the paranormal. Don't miss out !!!

I received this book from the author for an honest review, and what a pleasure it was reading this book.

Jerusa, a heart transplant recipient, can see ghosts and it seems Alicia is her own personal ghost. So when she finds Silvanus, who is not sure what he is but knows he isn’t human, in the woods, in her small town, she isn’t too surprised to find he isn’t exactly human. But what exactly is he? Foster, who has lost his daughter, has come to love Jerusa as his own child. And when he is preparing to leave town, he warns her to stay inside after dusk. She thinks it odd after Silvanus warns the same. But of course, she doesn’t listen and runs into vampires. She is bitten and Silvanus tries to save her by killing the vampire, Kole, who is draining her. Kole’s body was not destroyed thus he was not killed and has returned as a salvage beast out for destruction. A savage’s bite is laced with deadly poison, to vampires and humans and Jerusa is bitten. Silvanus, not knowing this, turns Jerusa in order to save her life and then he disappears. There are rules in place to prevent this very thing from happening and the Stewards are not going to be happy when they find out. It is up to Jerusa, Alicia and the group of vampires she has just met to destroy Kole, that is, if they can find him.

Holy cow! I mean, yeah it’s that awesome. Those books that draw you in immediately and keep you hanging onto the edge of your seat are the ones we all love right? Well this is definitely one where you will find yourself so close to the edge you almost fall off. Talk about nail biting, heart racing and down-right worrisome! This is one heck of a thrill ride! I would have to recommend this book to every single paranormal and fantasy lover out there.

My review is based on the audiobook. This is such a fantastic start of series. In depth characters that I couldn't help becoming invested in early on. The multiple narrators really brought the story amd characters to life. I look forward to seeing where the journey leads in book 2

So disappointing. Completely different writing than Predatory Animals.

Weak. In writing, characters and plot.

I enjoyed this one. Not to die for, but not bad at all. More solid and entertaining than many others of the same genre, fast-paced and with an interesting twist on vampire physiology. The characters are a bit two-dimensional but the background story is well structured and interesting. It has some stereotypes and some naive notions, but overall, I had an enjoyable time reading it. Certainly recommended.

Good plot, but the proof reader should be ashamed.

The is a really good story with a gripping plot. However there are many typos and spelling errors that were missed completely by those who proof read it. I will repeat that it is a good story but be prepared to wince at the presumably accidental spelling errors.

Too many typos. Plus the flat (and kind of racistly-depicted) characters, the switches in perspective that were more redundant than interest-piquing, and the generally hollow plot.

Held my attention better than Twilight, though.

It wasnt to die for but not exactly a piece a trash . But definitelly not worth the time and effort when more interesting books are out there. Not to be deleted but I wont continue the series for sure.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

"Vampire Spirit" is a very good introduction to the series, though it has its weaknesses, too:)
What are the strong points? The main character that you can easily get to like and keep your fingers crossed for, the concept of divine vampires, "normal" vampires and vampires gone savage, which is a great basis for many conflicts and plot twists, the mystery of Jerusa's uniquness... and the ability of Mr Beyers to create action scenes of almost cinematic quality:) They are fast and dynamic, and you have a feeling of being there and seeing everything with your own eyes... I also like some of the characters he created; I am still not certain whether I know all about them or whether they will turn out completely different from what they seem to be, as their motivations are not clear at all - I suspect there's much more to them and they'll surpise us in the next books in the series...

What about the weaknesses of the book? The pace is a bit uneven; as it's the first in the series, it has to introduce us to the world of Jerusa and then vampires, and that takes a bit of explaining, which at times slows the plot down and feels like too much talking, too little action, especially in the first half of the book. The second thing is, some of the characters feel two-dimensional, too schematic, kind of being there for the sake of being there or to follow a pattern typical for the genre (like an evil twin...)

Overall, however, it's a great listen and a book that makes you want to continue to find out what else Jerusa is capable of and what else is there in store for her and her allies...

As for the narration, I liked it very much: different narrators reading different characters' parts make all the voices sound natural and unique, and it leaves us with the feeling of almost listening to a radio play. The voices are well matched, too - Jerusa sounds really young (a teenager just recently turned adult - she is 18, after all:)) compared to the ancient, five thousand years old vampire woman (sorry, no name here as I have no idea how to spell that name:)) - and I like that a lot.
I also think that acting-wise all the narrators do a great job, interpreting their characters very well, convincingly conveying their personalities, feelings and emotions.

DISCLAIMER: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review

One of the best vampire books I've read all year!

As people who read a lot of my reviews may notice, I read a lot. Since I became an urban fantasy author myself, and one that includes vampires as central characters in their stories, I have been reading a lot of contemporary vampire books to keep track of where vampire pop culture is going.

To tell the truth, I haven't been very impressed all that often. While there are plenty of competent writers out there, very few are doing anything fresh or inventive with the Vampire mythos. Well, anything good, that is. I have seen plenty of ham-fisted attempts at freshening up vampire mythology rapidly become absurd and campy.

Vampire Spirit by Gabriel Beyers, however, is a wonderful deviation from the mediocre norm.

Quite simply, this is one of the best vampire novels I've read all year! The characters are well flushed out and distinct, the protagonist (Jerusa) is extremely likable and deep, and the story is gripping and moves along at a wonderful rate.

I really enjoyed what the author did with vampire mythology. Different enough to be unique, but without feeling the need to adventure into the absurd. The rules for vampires in this world have deep roots in history without being needlessly complex.

The world building is first rate, the characters are fantastic, and the story is inventive and lively. If you're looking for a truly GOOD vampire novel, then Vampire Spirit fits the bill!

Loved it!

I loved this book couldnt put it down. Brings a new mystery to vampires, and their abilities, instead of the same old vampire story, that even though is interesting, has gotten a bit boring. Imaginative, entertaining, and exciting, this book has it all!! Cant wait to read more!

Good urban fantasy

I enjoyed reading this book. A different take on vampires, different than what I have read previously anyway. Interesting characters. Interesting story. Think I will have to read the next one to see what happens to Jerusa next.

Interesting story

Jessa arrives at an escape from her mother to land into the middle of a vampire feud. Now she is a vampire and the situation is becoming worse. This is very interesting and I am waiting to find out Jessa's secrets.

A good book, good story line and decent characters. Somewhat older than the age group the book is aimed at, I still enjoyed it.

DNF. I tried to give it a chance. There were a couple of worrying things, small red flags right from the start. The best way to describe it is immature and amateurish writing.

For instance, occasionally the author would use different phrases or write descriptions and futz it up. Like, I get that when writing, you get very poetic and hot to think "outside the box" but tonally, it has to make sense. Otherwise, something like this,

"Alicia glanced at her from the side of her eye and her lips pulled into a tight scar across her face."

might erroneously read like you're describing the girl's lips as scarred rather than just being clear and saying she grimaced. You can dress it up all you like when making a clear description of someone's facial expressions. But when all the text around it is basic and utilitarian, then all of a sudden, you throw in a moody metaphor, we're still thinking literal and you have skipped a beat in coherence. And at least every other page the author would misuse language in this way, creating a jarring effect and putting me in mind of a very inexperienced writer.

Also, there's a jarring, unrelatable effect with frequently missing information. Jerusa's mother hates her. The narrative and internal dialogue tells us this. Jerusa has some anxiety and tension around her mother as well. But then in actual play, we don't see her mother being all that explosive or emotional or cruel. If anything...she seems slightly "working mom distracted" but it in no way can be translated to animosity. And Jerusa keeps chatting with her ghost friend and joking with her, so, the tension of the scene is lost in the same breath as we're told, "No, really. Mom's a borderline abusive psycho and I gotta be on my guard." What? When? 'Cause you seem pretty chill right now and your mom doesn't even seem to be unreasonably upset to any degree. Not at Jerusa, anyway.

It was fine. Whatever. Sometimes writers are lazy or a little light on the craft and they can still entertain you. But I had to out it down. Omg. Chapter four is the cringiest, messiest piece of writing that I've ever seen. A pair of gentleman vampires wander upon a trio of homeless people and decide to feed on them. I can't tell if the author was trying to go for charming menace or subverting expectations by making the scene humorous, but the vampires talk to each other like they don't know how a real conversation is supposed to work and as if there aren't three other people right there.

Right off the bat, the one vampire introduces himself and his companion to the humans, like, "Hello. My name is Kiso and this is my friend Taos." ...what? What are you doing right now? Like this is a very awkward version of "playing with your food." Then they banter over nothing, one of them mockingly offering to join the bums to drink and sing and then...he does. He starts just singing. Then like a child, he has to be told to hurry up and kill the dude he's got ahold of. He asks the other vampire "why?" Like, looking like an idiot just from that alone. But then when it's explained to him, like, "duh, we're killing people and burning the bodies in fucking public, remember?" he just gives in with a "oh. Very well then." Like, he didn't even have a good reason for complaining about being rushed. He just literally forgot and wanted to be told obvious crap.

I don't want to even get into the mechanics of the scene and how while both vampires focus upon the homeless woman of the trio, biting her and openly fighting over her, talking about killing these people...I guess the other two dudes were just chilling out, sitting, watching, waiting their turn. To die at the hands of these strange men. Because when it is their turn and the corpse of the lady is tossed onto the fire, the vampires turn to the homeless men and they're still there. Was this supposed to be happening quickly? Because they had time in between bites to banter. Seems like core "running away seconds" for any other humans in the vicinity paying attention.

Just mismanagement of tones and scenes. Not only is this author inexperienced with language and description but he doesn't have a full grasp on building and maintaining tension in a scene and what a "pay off" is in regards to emotional expectations. I was going to try. But then chapter 4 had me writhing and cringing so hard, it would have been like pulling teeth to continue.

I received an electronic copy of "Heart of the Dead" from Mr. Buyers to review. I have to say that this story is a fresh take on all things vampire. The Heroine is easy to love and it is hard to accept all that happens as a good thing. The first two chapters were hard to get through but after that the story comes alive. The villains are truly easy to hate and they make you want to protect humanity and the "good guys". I would like to see better characters development early on in the book. I am looking forward to the next novel in this series so I can watch Mr. Buyers grow as an author. Overall, this is a great book and worth the read. If you like suspense, fantasy, horror and drama with a little young romance, don't miss this book. I am happy to recommend this to others. Kudos Mr. Buyers.

Mr Beyers will keep you on the edge of your seat with this one.

Don't let the title pull you away from this one. You have it all in one book, vampires, ghosts, flesh-eaters... what more do you need!

Jerusa can see ghosts. While walking home from school she comes across a naked man in the woods, she decides to call him Silvanus, but who is he? Where did he come from? When Jerusa doesn't heed the warnings to stay inside after dark, things heat up. Kole ends up becoming a 'Savage' (a flesh-eating vampire) and is running loose. Can the others find him before too many lives are lost?

Gripping

I loved this book from the very first page. I could relate very easily with the main character with having the overprotective mother, but could also see it through the mother's eyes. Though she wasn't a major character in the plot or storyline I definitely understood her wanting and needing to protect and almost smother her daughter in a protective barrier of love.
The story is written so well I couldn't stop reading and if I keep writing about it I am afraid of spoiling it. It's an absolutely amazing paranormal read

Goodreads win. WIll read and review once received.

I was a bit nervous going into reading this book, because it had to do with vampires. Vampires have been done so many times it's hard to find a book that is interesting with them in it. This author did a great job with this book. I enjoyed the angle used for vampires. it was pretty original. It kept my attention from the start to the end. By the end of the book I was left wanting to read more. I would recommend to just about anyone.

This was going to be a very quick read, but I slowed down to enjoy the strange ideas - I liked the idea of a vampire's link to a ghost/best-friend.

It's a bit rushed, and the characters develop more slowly than the plot-line, but overall I enjoyed it. This one was a freebie, but I'm going to buy the next one to see where it goes. The guy deserves the pennies!

Recommended. (Worth looking for the short story "The Barn" by the same author - that's worthy of development).

A different type of paranormal mystery.

The main character in this story is one that has become an unusual type of vampire with exceptional powers beyond the normal spectrum. Will look forward to reading more of them.
