This is a cute and humorous book about all the nonsense kids hear about picking scabs from their parents, peers and adult figures. Carmen has a scab on her arm and she hears multiple reasons why not to pick it, such as it will bleed and attract sharks, it will hurt and even that it will scar. Carmen listens to the people’s advice a little too well and takes extra precautions to ensure the scab will stay on. She glues it, puts bandages on it and even tapes it down. In the end of the book, one of the boys who teased her about eating the scab because it would taste good rips of the bandage and Carmen realizes the scab is finally gone. I really like this book because it shows kids that it is important to leave scabs alone because they will heal better and eventually fall off on their own. All kids end up with scabs one way or another, especially throughout elementary school. This would be a great read-aloud book to the classroom after recess to calm the children down before getting back to their classroom work because it’s not only humorous but I also think kids will have an easy time relating to it.

7/8/11 ** This clever book taps into the feelings that any of us have had anytime we've had a big, ugly, itchy scab. Carmen has a scab and is dying to scratch it, but everyone around tells her NOT to scratch it - it might bleed and sharks might come, it might get infected, etc. There's a great twist at the end with a boy who burps - go read to find out why he's licking his lips. (You might find it gross, but your elementary and pre-school kids will LOVE it!)

The energetic illustrations fit this story perfectly.

My Review: Children are always fascinated about their scab and can not wait to scratch it. They don’t know that by picking the scab it could get infected. You would love the ending which will make you laugh out loud or not…lol! Carmen's Sticky Scab is easy to read and enjoyed by children of all ages. I love love the illustrations by Barry Gott, it helped tell the story. I highly recommend this book.

This is a disgustingly funny book. Can't decide if it's too weird to read at storytime or not. ;-)
