In the alternate reality from which Juaquin Prado hails, when a person dies, his spirit is interred, not his body. So when Prado gets killed during a botched bank robbery, his soul, left unattended, goes viral, possessing dozens of people simultaneously, evicting them from their bodies and causing them to decompose even though they are still alive.
As if Mara Lantern doesn’t have enough to worry about. Now, in addition to mastering her new metaphysical powers and having a mentor with a propensity for turning into a dragon, she must deal with mindless rotting people roaming the streets of Portland, Oregon.
Note: This series is best read in order. Readers should begin with Broken Realms (The Chronicles of Mara Lantern, Book 1)
First off, no one calls me D-Dubya, at least not to my face. Call me David. I went with the initials because the web address was available.
Anyway, I’m a former newspaper journalist and technology manager who lives in Portland, Oregon. I am taking a couple of years off to try my hand at writing fiction. It’s okay if you raise an eyebrow at that. Most of the people I know do.
There were so many good ideas in this book. There are good ideas throughout the entire series, but it all devolved into typical YA nonsense with snarky teenagers. Why do so many authors insist on ruining every decent idea by turning it into more ridiculous YA fiction. It's so frustrating.
I read this book immediately after reading the first book & I loved it even more than the first book! I loved the simplicity of the explanations for things that happen, I love the 'duh!' moments. I love the creepy infection, I love the other Mara we meet. There is just so much I loved in this book! I really hope at some point we get to go back to the Mara with armadillo/pig named Ginger! I liked how there are so many different realms with so many different possibilities. I loved Ping! I want more!
First off, I did not read the first book in the series, which put me at a bit of a disadvantage with back-stories and character development. That being said I found the writing easy to follow and smooth flowing. I enjoyed the fantastical elements of the tale (such as the dragons and giant lizards) but wasn't a big fan of the characters and their interactions with each other (fell a bit flat for me.)
Wow. This story is PACKED with adventure! Über creepy zombies, powerful special abilities, alternate realities, and my personal favorite, A DRAGON!!! Yeah, this book was awesome. Can't wait for book three!
I liked books 1 and 2. Would have liked to see the detective more involved in the story. Why was he dropped? A simply told story with some explanation of events. I would like to see it written more concisely.
