Her Vampire's Promise

Rate this book
There is an alternate cover edition for this ASIN here.

Raging Fire Kills Co-Founder, Daughter.
Panthera Laboratories in Ruin.
~ Central City Gazette, 1994

Reade Hayes knows better than any vampire that nothing good ever comes out of Central City. So he isn’t surprised the beautiful blonde he meets in a dive bar is crazy. What does surprise him is how fast she moves, how hard she hits, and the fact she’s wearing a ring he last saw two decades ago on the hand of his dead friend.

Is it possible the little girl he swore a blood pact to protect didn’t die in the fire? If the beauty sitting beside him is that pretty little baby, where has she been for twenty years? And why is she so lethal?

On hindsight Lawrie Tyrone realizes drinking vampire blood might not have been the smartest decision. But scientists experiment and if she is going to prove her father was not a traitor, she has to take risks. So far she’s experienced no alarming side effects, well, none other than being able to recognize vampires walking among humans.

From the power he exudes to his gorgeous dark eyes everything about the man to her right screams danger. Every logical thought tells her to kill him. But something in his eyes stops her. Is he using his vampire powers to influence her, or is something else making her heart ache for him?

Can love thrive in the ruins of Central City?

Eight weeks and eighteen vampire books later the idea for her first book, Perpetual Light came to her followed very quickly by Eva Prim.

In April of 2014 Prim & Proper, the second Eva Prim Novel released. Also available are The Demon Mistress, the first Eva Prim Novel along with four short stories. For continual updates on Eva please join the Snack Of The Week Club at www.evaprim.com.

In August of 2014 Jordan released the first novella in the Romance In Central City Series, Her Vampire’s Promise. Novella two, The Vampire’s Partner follows in September and A Vampire’s Passion is the October Release. Novella four, His Vampire Past is set for a November release.

Jordan is a member of the national Romance Writers of America organization and several chapters.

When she’s not writing about one vampire or another Jordan enjoys spending time with her husband, Ken and their lovable Labrador, Dino on the beautiful beaches of New England.

This book started off well, but unfortunately there wasn't enough time for us to get truly invested into the characters, and I found myself getting confused at various points in the novella. We start off in a bar where human Lawrie meets a couple of vampires, including Reade. While I wanted time to focus on their romantic development, I felt that other parts of the story overshadowed their relationship too heavily: Lawrie's search for freedom, her drinking vampire blood, and their past history.

Might have worked better with a longer length.

This had me hooked from the beginning. It's sad that he thought she died in the fire and that everyone kept telling him that she was dead. But I loved it when he found out she wasn't and they ended up together. I loved the book but would have loved the big escape scene have more action to it. Over all, I really enjoyed this book.

She Experimented On Herself

She's figured out how to get out of her prison. She is in a place where her uncle can't find her, she hopes. He's back in town to do a favor for Garrison and he runs into someone he's been looking for for twenty years. Now he can fulfil a promise made to her father. This is a interesting and entertaining read. Enjoy I did.

This first installment of Romance in Central City grabbed my attention from word one and did not let go. Reade is a vampire has been searching for the child of his dead friend and scientist, Lawrence. When Lawrence died he left behind a baby girl, who Reade has vowed to protect but lost after his death. The family told him that the child had died in the same fire that claimed her father but Reade never believed it. Twenty years later, he walks into a bar, sits next to a beautiful blonde with a chip on her shoulder, and waits for his partner. As the events unfold, he is shocked to find that the blonde is Lawrie, the baby he has been searching for. This isn't a long story but the overall arch continues into the rest of the series. It's a fun, sweet romance that will make you laugh out loud and still pull at your heartstrings.

What kind of cliffhanger is that?!?!?!?!? I don't know whether to be upset or applaud for a job well done. The plot is intriguing and almost consuming. This novella was meant to introduce. We got to know the personalities along with the major issue. The history is a little weird and the prologue was heart wrenching. I look forward to getting the rest of the series as soon as my book budget has an opening. This seems to be worth the read if only to find out how everything progresses and ends.

Gods beginning to a new series. Just wish it was longer. I hope we reconnect with the two main characters in the next book. You only just get starting to learn the characters. A handsome vampire and an innocent female. He has been looking for her for 20 years due to a promise to protect her. She has been hidden away by an unloving uncle and just escaped for the night to see the real world.

I downloaded Her Vampire's Promise as a free novella from Amazon. This story a very confusing opening chapter, but I stuck with it and things got better as questions were answered. The plot was unique, but not complex, so there was a lack of tension, but I enjoyed the characters.

This book started off good. Indian there was more character development so that each character could be more rounded and not so flat. The story felt rushed for my liking and it seemed like it was just ended and not a fully developed ending. Overall, it was an Ok read.

Story line is somewhat confusing. It wasn't what I was expecting, when I got it. I don't like rape. It made me grit my teeth together. I stopped reading after that.

Reade and Lawrie? Man, I must be getting old if weird spellings are annoying me.
Experimenting on herself?
Garrison was mocking her. The first guy had mocked and now this guy. Where were they from, the land of mockery? (Kindle Locations 344-345).

What? [this happens a lot; the same word repeated three or four times in consecutive sentences.]
Reade once again ran his fingers through her hair making her scalp tingle. His hands smoothed over her neck, down her back to her hips. Simultaneously they rubbed over her ass, lingering for barely a second’s hesitation. (Kindle Locations 530-531).

Simultaneously? How many hands does he have? Either they lingered or they hesitated, they can’t do both.
It’s third person pov but with thoughts as well. No… that’s not it. I can’t see what’s wrong with it, I just know something is.
“Well?” she asked. How long was it going to take for him to control her? What if they tortured her all night? What if they picked at her mind, memory by memory, until all that was left was a babbling idiot? “Just please kill me. Don’t leave me here like a vegetable.” (Kindle Locations 569-572).

She’s already a babbling idiot.
This is very muddled.
It takes the vampires pages to work out she’s moving at vampire speed and strength. This shouldn’t be difficult, she punched one of them and broke his nose. Duh.
I think Lawrie is a scientist but she says she’s a cleaner (?no, she says she’s watched them and knows why the experiments failed because she knows the periodic table. Uh huh. That doesn’t make sense.) and she’s supposed to be smart, but it takes her too long to work out simple things.
You think you understand physics? You don’t know a damn thing. You think you understand the chemical engineering of plasma? Stupid girl. Go play with your dolls. (Kindle Locations 348-349).

Huh? Physics, chemical engineering and plasma studies are three entirely different sciences.
There are pages of unnecessary confused dialogue. You don’t want the readers to be confused. She has (I think) escaped from some kind of compound run by her uncle… maybe. But tell us that. Or show it - better and better. The first time we see her she’s whiny and unapproachable and rude to the bar staff. This is the MC and I already dislike her.
Note: the news heading in the summary isn’t in my copy anywhere.
Reade recognises her scent but also takes too long to work out she’s the three year old child of his mentor, now all grown up. And she smells like him because she drank his blood. Twenty year old blood? I reckon it has a use-by date, you know? He’s also creeping on a person he knew as a child, so my squick factor is high.
His cock twitched. He hadn’t intended not to see her grow up and then find out she’d turned into his favorite fantasy.(Kindle Locations 858-859).

What? That makes no sense.
She drank two pint bags of vampire blood? Ewww… and why? If she dies with vampire blood in her system, she becomes one, doesn’t she? But she has to die first.
Honestly, I don’t care to know.

3.5/5 I have been seeing this author’s books around for awhile but had never tried one until now. I know this novella is the first in a series, but I am not exactly sure if they are all novellas or not. I do know that after reading this one, that I would like to read the next one in the series someday.

Reade is a vampire that is part of a group referred to as The Guard. I am still a bit hazy on what The Guard actually does. However, twenty years previously they were stationed? at a laboratory complex called Panthera, where Reade had made a blood pact concerning the small child belonging to a scientist that is researching vampire’s blood. There’s reasons why for this which I won’t go into. After a fire kills the child’s father, the vampire group loses track of the child after they are told she has died. Reade has never believed this and has hunted for her ever since. This is the story of what happens when he finally finds her.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well written this novella was. The whole first part of the story involved time spent in a dive bar with the three main characters, Reade, Garrison-also a vampire and part of The Guard-and of course the all grown up child-Lawrie-named after her father, Lawrence. A first for me, when the reader first meets Lawrie you not only don’t like her, but you think she is a nut job. And of course there is a big reason for this as well. And yes that part does change. Reade is an all around nice guy, as long as you don’t care that he is a lethal vampire. Garrison is kind of the comic relief, but not exactly in a good way as I think too much of him would really get on your nerves. Put another way, I hope he doesn’t get his own book! We do eventually meet some other members of The Guard, most of which were lethal bad boys to say the least.

I did have a problem with this read beyond the insta-love that comes with the territory in a romantic novella. Just when you feel like you are really getting into the story, it’s over. I was still trying to turn the pages and that’s never a good thing for me when reading. I think one or two more chapters would have gone a long way towards making me appreciate this read more.

I would recommend this to PNR readers at least 15+ due to some sexual conversations and thoughts only, plus some language not appropriate for a younger audience.

I did want to mention one more thing- I’m not a fan of the cover. Covers shouldn’t matter when picking out a book, but they really do. It didn’t change how I rated this story however.(RabidReads.com)

Blood pack drawing them together without even knowing it. Crazy things can happen in dingy bars after a fruity cocktail or two.

Meeting in a dingy bar to discuss a recon mission takes an interesting turn for Reade after Garrison is late leaving him there alone. Well, not quite, aside from the barman, there is a woman who seems to like nothing more than to drink and mutter to herself. Feeling taken advantage of and unappreciated her whole life she has had enough of people thinking little of her and laughing at her. Reade is the final straw and with one smirk a broken nose soon follows. Not a one trick pony either as things soon escalate with Reade on the short end of her temper. Her speed and force something to confuse but once her name is said all things stop. What they were looking for has fallen into their laps.

Connection to protect after figuring out who she is might be high but Reade, and Garrison really when he shows up, need to work on their communication/cocky attitude skills before making Lawrie angry. One woman not known for anger or violence seems to have a knack for it when laughed at or made to feel insignificant. Might have something to do with what she drank that night, and I don't mean the cocktails. Felt a bit like a comedy sketch with each guy being taken unaware and hurt by this firecracker with a short fuse. They need her safe and away from danger. Will she trust these vampires with her life or go back to the only place she has ever known?

Not that much happens to flush out the story but more of a starting off point to the world and the darker deeds that might follow with Panthera, the Guard, and how things link with Lawrie. Interesting characters that give you a glimpse into their worlds but feel it could have been longer. Once they are out of the bar it's almost done. Ending was a bit flat. Seems this was more a book to set up the story for the series with introducing all the characters. Needed a bit more but then the main two in this one might pop up in rest of series as running characters throughout. Not bad for a free kindle read.

I don't know. I just don't know. Yeah, we are still with my free e-book reads here and I'm lost for words again. One day I'm going to quit this nonsense and go back to my cosy library with its volumes of dead trees and review those.
But that day is not today since I dived into this novella. It was short, that's that. You know I don't like these short things because the events in them happen too fast and there is not enough foundation on which I (the reader) could build any opinion. These things just leave me cold - which is bad, I should feel something (anything) after finishing a book, that's for sure. Nothing says it was a good book like a big book hangover ;-)= Unfortunately after finishing this I was just hungry. Which is a state I'm always in so that doesn't help much.
From this piece I can't tell you much about vampires since there is not much to be said. Some are bad, some are experimented on, some kill people because people are bad too, some kill people because they want. And some are creepy as hell since they feel connection with a baby and twenty years later they grope her... Just sayin'. At least there was no adult content, that would degrade this hysteria even more. The characters are evolving way too fast, and therefore one can't believe them. No one in their right mind goes from psycho bitch to a mellow purring kitten. I mean some people do but they usually seek therapy, there is no romantic stuff written about them.
I really hated the beginning of the story because it was too bizarre and the characters acted like idiots but as the story progressed I actually glimpsed potential. So, who knows, maybe the other stories in the series are more complicated and reader-friendly.

Her Vampire's Promise (Central City Romance #1) by Jordan K. Rose is a Paranormal Romance Suspense.
It is a short read of about 100 or so pages. From what I can tell it is the first of 6 novella's. This one and #6 is the longest. If the rest are like this one, then anybody of any age (I suggest 14 and up) can read them. There are no adult or erotic scenes, nor undue violence, etc.
That doesn't mean there isn't romance. There is. There is also some great moments throughout this story. Lets just say Lawrie is stronger than she realizes and Reade gets to feel the pain of her ire. Then his humiliation when his friend takes pictures on his cell phone of Reade's embarrassment for all to see.
It is funny and interesting. Definitely well written. However, there is room for improvement.
There is a few chapters that slowed way down. A few areas that are a bit repetitive. This is my reason for 4 stars.
As far as the story goes, that is my only problem with it.
I do have a problem with the series. I want to read them, but I am a very frugal and prudent person. I was disappointed when I researched what it would cost to continue the series. It is not what I consider reasonable.
