An early reader for those just starting out on chapter books. It's a pig who can smell treasure in the water. Naturally, pirates have thrown the pig overboard for not being able to find treasure. Away from the pirates, so does smell treasure and the pirates find out and they want her back. It's a silly little story and the 3 year old nephew enjoyed it. This is a simple story and it has some fun elements like treasure and pirates. The kids enjoyed it more than I did.
This is a fun and exciting early chapter book with wonderful art! Stout Sam and his deckhand Pip rescue a pig they find washed ashore in a barrel. It turns out that Julie (The Pig) has been trained by Pirates to sniff out treasure, and she is very good at it. Now the Pirates want her back! Sam and Pip have to stage a daring rescue on the pirate ship.
This is a four star early chapter book. It is very difficult to find good books written at this level, and this is one of them. The adventure, saving Julie from the pirate ship when she has been kidnapped really does feel dangerous. There are charming touches like jellyfish cream cakes and a diagram of the pirate ship.
Stout Sam finds Julie, a pig who has a knack for finding treasure at sea. But Barracuda Bill hears about Julie and decides to steal her. A fun adventure book for kids that isn't too scary.
Early reader chapter book. Nothing very special, but still an engaging adventure story with some mystery and suspense. Highly recommend for pig lovers who are ready for something a tiny bit more advanced than Mercy Watson.
Food seems to be an important plot point in all pig books.
Thank you to Random House Children's Books for the review copy! Receiving one did not affect my views of the novel.
So I admit, I don't have a kid to read this one to so my work colleague and I decided to read it and discuss it. I'll keep this one short as I don't think we're even that qualified to judge picture books.
The art was wonderful and cute. It was colorful but with a bit of a washed-out look into it, which I thought was apt for the story. Like it was colored using a watercolor. The style of the drawings/line art was just simple, which I appreciated because it looks like a toddler would be able to copy/trace it. I don't know about you but when I was a kid, I loved copying drawings even if I was terrible at it.
As for the story, it was simple and cute enough for its audience. Stout Sam and Pip discovered a pig in a barrel who can sniff out treasure. But Sam and Pip were not greedy and they didn't take advantage of Julie the Pig. However, here comes our villain Barracuda Bill who steals Julie! Poor pig! The conflict was resolved, thanks to Pip, and it had its tense moments too. Stout Sam and Pip's plan to save Julie was dangerous and I'm sure little kids will get excited by it.
All in all, The Pirate Pig was an okay picture book. It tells a simple story kids will easily understand and enjoy.
Stout Sam and his deckhand Pip enjoy a perfectly peaceful life on Butterfly Island, sailing their boat for their "Island Transports" business. One day they find a barrel washed up on the beach. Inside is a tiny pig, which they name Julie. She is a most endearing pig who it turns out has a valuable talent. Julie can smell treasure in the sea. When Pip and Sam sail with her she squaels loudly every time she smells treasure. Before long, Sam and Pip recover coins and valuable jewelry in the sea, unfortunately they can't help but brag about their booty. Before long the most evil pirate on the high seas hears about Julie and has to steal her. This rollicking story illustrated with whimsical watercolor and ink pictures is delightfully entertaining, and would make a great read aloud or title for young children ready to read slightly harder early chapter books, however there are no chapters, just one precious adventure with a pig, friendly sailors, and nasty pirates.
Absolutely delightful. I got this book because I like other things by the author and knew my pig-loving younger sister would like it. It probably only took fifteen minutes for me to read this, but it was a very pleasant fifteen minutes: most books at this reading level rely on dumb gags and potty humor to draw in young readers, but this is a unique, appealing story with good vocabulary words, great pictures, and the kind of excellence that draws in adults too. It's a rare event for me to read something aimed at second graders and think, "I wish I could write like this," but this is one of those books.
This book is a bit of a snoozefest. Or so my 7 year old insisted, so we stopped reading it. We did get more than halfway through though. The story was just not compelling enough to engage him to keep reading it.
My Review: Other than Inkheart, I have never really paid attention to other books by Funke, but when I was searching for some pirate books I came across this one. With a cover and a title like this one, who could resist? This was a fun and quirky book to read and would be great for young readers who love Roald Dahl books. There are a lot of alliterations in this book and may be helpful to some young readers who may have trouble with certain letter sounds. Sam and Pip were in for quite a shock when they discovered their rescued pig could sniff out treasure and they end up on quite an adventure. I had a lot of fun with this light-hearted story.
Cornelia Funke paints a vivid and enchanting world with Julie the Pirate Pig and her two dads, Pip and Stout Sam. Funke ignited the fun in reading for me during my childhood with Inkheart — and she’s ignited it again with The Pirate Pig fourteen years later. I started this expecting a fantastical story of a marauding pirate pig, but to my delighted surprise it’s an adventure about rescuing a kidnapped treasure-sniffing pig! The illustrations are beautiful and detailed. Would recommend for a quick make-you-smile read for adults or a fun intro to longer books for kids.
The kid was absolutely enthralled by this one, and then I had to answer a million questions about the motivations of the pirates and the pig, because authors almost never give enough "why" explanations for my child... I thought it was a cute story, and definitely more enjoyable than Mercy Watson, which is the immediate comparison because pigs. The pirate ship diagram was also a plus. 3.5 stars, rounded up because my kid seemed to really like it.
This is a great early chapter book or read aloud for young children. It has wonderful illustrations which helped hold my little guy’s attention. It’s full of adventure without being scary and also gives some good laughs. We loved it! Funke has also written a couple of other great read aloudbooks in the same style, length and tone as this one (Ruffleclaw and & Emma and the Blue Genie).
I tried this with my pirate/Treasure Island obsessed five-year-old but he didn't want to continue. It's a short chapter book with illustrations on every page which can help make the transition from picture to chapter books for young readers. However, the illustrations are a bit rough and I think that contributed to his dislike of the story.
A very cute, fast read. The pictures are really cute. Only one was a bit strange (the devil on the pirate's boat). This would be a great story to read aloud to younger children, or for beginning readers to read, although it's a level 4.3 AR book . I love Cornelia Funke's books :)
Fun little story with characters I could follow for a while. I was expecting my son to ask me to skip over the Barracuda Bill parts, but he stayed with it. It's not that scary, I can never tell when a book might stress him out and he will want to skip parts.
This is a pretty silly book, but it's a sweet story of the pirate pig Julie who finds a home with those who love her unconditionally. But can she stay with her found family? What will happen when pirates hear about her special talent for sniffing out treasure?
Read to the twins over the course of a week. Cute illustrations and the story itself was ok but I found the writing cumbersome, especially for the intended audience. I think the twins (barely 6) liked it well enough though.
😆 Emesh Babangsee!
