After a lifetime marred by a horrific trauma she witnessed at age five, Felicity Kirk has done her best to leave behind the tabloid image of “Little Lissie” that haunted her entire childhood. Now a successful model who uses a false last name to avoid any mention of her traumatic past, she is unaware that “The Monster” from her nightmares is about to catch up with her…or is he?
Following a broken engagement that left her emotionally scarred in her twenties, Felicity foolishly decides not to share the truth about her past with Michael Hampton, her wealthy new fiancé. After a whirlwind romance, the couple marries and heads to Italy for their honeymoon, where the new bride becomes convinced that someone is stalking her from halfway across the world…someone that no one else seems to believe actually exists.
Upon the newlyweds’ return home from their honeymoon, things quickly spiral from bad to worse. Doors that Felicity swore she locked are mysteriously found ajar; appliances that she was positive she unplugged are found on and running, causing strain and mistrust in the young couple's fledgling marriage. Felicity’s mental health is called into question by everyone around her, resulting in the loss of her beloved job, as she slowly loses the ability to leave her own home due to her fear of finally being caught by the all-too-real figure from her nightmares. Not even finally confiding her true identity to her husband, or the antipsychotic drugs prescribed by her sympathetic psychiatrist help.
Chancing to notice a mysteriously official-looking paper at the top of her husband’s desk one afternoon, Felicity is horrified to discover that Michael has taken out a substantial life insurance policy on her. Felicity is sure that he must be behind all of the things that keep happening to trigger her paranoia…
Until Michael himself disappears without a trace.
With page-turning twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the shocking conclusion, Fear of Man is sure to keep you in suspense at every turn!
As a reader with ADHD, sometimes it can be difficult to read books with a lot of detail. When I first started this book, I was very concerned about the prose, the descriptive writing, narrative clocks and flash forward/backwards. I was pleasantly surprised to find that once I began to read, after a few pages, I could not put this book down. I was genuinely interested in the main characters and could easily picture every situation and scene. The plot is a whirlwind of a psychological thriller and there are some major twists, especially in the last few chapters. I would highly recommend this to any psych thriller fan and once it is released in hardcover (I did purchase the paperback), I will absolutely add it to my bookshelves.
