Shadows of Gold

Rate this book
Not everything glitters in the city of shadows and gold.

Ari and Tib have escaped Eida, but now they must fight the darkness thriving within themselves or be consumed by it. To make matters worse, they’re met with hostility instead of help when they reach the shores of Taiatum. Someone is killing Taiatum’s guardians, and unless Ari and Tib find out who, the guardians will execute them for it.

Bound from using her rune magic, Ember has always felt like an outsider among her people. But when the gods reveal a hidden power within her, Ember must choose between staying loyal to her people or forging her own path. If she reclaims her magic and helps Ari and Tib, she’ll lose her place among her people forever. And the fate of Taiatum rests on her decision.

On the cliffs of the Starfallen’s new home, Graeden anxiously awaits Ari’s return while overseeing Isla’s imprisonment. When he learns Ari is in danger, he’ll risk anything to protect the woman he loves, even if that means trusting the fairy responsible for the slaughter of countless Starfallen.

As the ravaging darkness spreads across the Four Realms, enemies must come together, and all will need to rise to survive the coming storm.

I really liked the new setting Ari and Tib traveled to on a quest, as well as the new FMC, Ember. Ember is one of my favorite characters now and a great addition to the story. She has amazing feminine energy and stands up for what she believes in, even if no one else does. I was impressed with the world-building yet again and the creativity that was put into it. Graeden was awesome, which is a surprise to no one. I was also pleasantly surprised to learn more about Isla. Something I appreciate is how the new or growing powers the characters have symbolize their inner growth, too, especially with Ari. This is a series I could see myself reading multiple times. I recommend it if you want dark and gritty fantasy that doesn’t glorify the darkness but fights it.

I received an eARC for a review.

Spice level: Kisses only
Content warning: I’d say the violence level is about the same as the first two books.

3.5/5 stars

The third book takes the series into even more intriguing territory, layering in new conflicts, new societies, and romances. The world-building continues to be one of Benson’s strongest skills; Taiatum is fascinating with its glittering surface and shadows lurking beneath.

Honestly, this has been my favorite of the series so far. The introduction of Ember was a highlight for me; I loved her arc and the way her sweet romance with Tib balanced out the heavier, darker elements of the story. Ari and Graeden also continue to grow, and I liked that their relationship was given some space; splitting them up for part of the book added depth to both their individual growth and their bond. Shifting focus toward their friendships and new dynamics kept the story interesting.

That said, some of the same challenges from earlier books remain. Plot conveniences pop up here and there, and while I enjoy the sweeping scope of the story, I still don’t feel a deep emotional connection to the characters. For me, they lean a little flat compared to the richness of the setting. And at times, I felt the book could have been tighter. Some sections dragged more than they needed to.

Still, this was an engaging and imaginative story, and easily the most compelling entry in the series so far. If you’ve enjoyed the earlier books, this one absolutely builds on them in satisfying ways.

Thank you so much to the author for the complimentary copy and the opportunity to review. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

ARC Reader: This was my favorite book of the series (so far)! This book was filled with suspense and twists and action and slow burn romance. I love Ember and Taiatum and had so many emotions for them. The magic system and gods in Taiatum is really cool. Ari, Graeden, and Tib all had great character development. Mara and Caelum have me wanting more. This book had me on the edge of my seat with so many emotions throughout.

Ari and Tiberius are searching for the mystical city of shadows and gold, Taiatum, to free themselves from the darkness inside them. While Graeden stayed behind in Cliffside to help the Starfallen establish a new home in the human realm.

I have mixed feelings to this follow up. You can tell there is a vibrant and well thought out world in this series. And I enjoy getting to experience a new one in this installment.

We get to learn a bit more about our protagonists, especially Tiberius, and meet a new character, Ember and her thunderbird. And although I love Ember and Tiberius together, I’m not a fan of Ember. I guess she redeemed herself in the end, but I do feel as if her selfishness stretched to the point that I just can’t find myself to like her. I found her tiring.

The villain has been consistently my favorite through this series. I think he’s the only one that I feel as if is the most well rounded and consistent. He’s a villain through and through and I appreciate that. He’s charming in a morally grey way, and I always enjoy his moments in this series. He’s truly the only character I like.

Like previous books in this series, I’ve enjoyed the world, the plot and story, in fact, I think I enjoyed the first two more than this one, but there’s something about the writing style that makes it difficult for me to get into each of the stories, to stick with them and not get distracted and truly enjoy and be immersed in them. I think I realized that there’s more telling than showing. And so when things happen, I just question how or why this occurred because it wasn’t thoroughly explained, it just happens.

This installment I just felt as if it was longer than necessary. Things happened that didn’t seem to be needed in the story or were “mysterious” and I guess they’ll be explained later, like the random girl Ari saved and became obsessed with protecting, but the way the events occurred didn’t make sense and just made me question everything and sit there and be confused.

One other thing, the chapters are WAY too long. I enjoy a book more when the chapters are a bit shorter and leave you with a brief cliffhanger making you want to read more. That didn’t happen for me in this book.

That being said, this is really an interesting and unique world. I do enjoy the story, it’s just the writing style I struggle with a lot. The villain makes the story for me and I honestly think I would only continue to find out what happens to him. A redemption arc would be neat 😏 But there’s three more books in this series, and that makes me feel exhausted just thinking about it, and if they’re all as long as these past three, I’m not sure I can continue. I guess if the mood strikes!

Thank you to the author for the e-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

CW: violence, gore, death, grief, some others

Thank you to the author for the ARC! “Shadows of Gold” releases August 26, 2025!

I actually managed to get through this one without having to stop every fifth chapter for rage breaks; I’m calling it a win.

They’ve made it out of Eida, but the journey wasn’t without cost. Tib and Ari battle the darkness they brought back, Graeden continues to try and secure Ari’s position as queen, and Caelum is nowhere to be found.

I am not convinced that this author doesn’t thrive on causing immense and immediate rage in their readers. It might just be a me issue, but never in my life have I found a character who made me immediately go “nope, not right now” as soon as they appeared on the page. Just instantaneous feelings of “I simply cannot.” That being said, the rest of this story was really enjoyable, so I kept coming back and suffering through it. If you’ve made it this far in the series, you probably know exactly who I’m referencing; if you haven’t started the series yet, I’ll not be telling you because *spoilers.*

High demand for a rage room aside, this was probably the most magically dense and character-developing of the three current installments. Book 2 comes in close for magic use, but something about the magic in this book just hits the right notes for me. It’s lovely and varied and the rules feel a lot more tangible. The scenery here is also absolutely breathtaking. The whole setting is just beautifully done and I really enjoyed it.

I’m not forgetting the character growth. Ari is still reckless and impulsive, and she still makes some decisions that make me want to tear my hair out (again, teens are not known for being good at this), but it’s definitely improving. Her actions are (slightly) more thought out, and we’re really seeing her pick her stance and stick with it. She’s growing, and it’s a good thing. Absolutely do not ever ask her to make a quality decision while stressed though; that’s pushing for too much. There were a couple of other characters whose choices and actions stressed me to no end, but I’m almost positive those are just personal preferences for conflict resolution, so you should probably evaluate those for yourself.

The plotlines here really packed a lot of movement into the story, and I loved it. There’s never a dull moment in this one, and it’s part of what made it easy to jump back in when the characters were trying my patience. There’s 3 different POVs here, so if you could stick things out for a chapter you’d be fine.

This was probably my favorite of the three ‘Fallen Kingdoms’ novels so far. It’s full of action, our FMC is finally starting to get herself together, and the backdrop was perfect. I am absolutely ready to see what book four holds for us.

👑✨📖 ARC Review: Shadows of Gold by KB Benson

⭐ 5/5 stars for this swoon‑worthy, soul‑aching, fantasy‑filled tale of loyalty, letting go, and love that lingers even in the shadows.

As the third book in The Fallen Kingdom Series, Shadows of Gold not only continues the story—it elevates it to breathtaking new heights. KB Benson weaves past heartbreak, present devotion, and the pull of destiny into a narrative that left me utterly wrecked—in the best way.
Told through the voices of Ari, Ember, Caelum, and Graeden, the story dances between kingdoms and hearts, between memory and truth, between who we were and who we’re becoming. It made me ache, smile through tears, and cling to every single word.

🐉👑 Ari
Our queen, our compass, our aching heart. Watching Ari finally say goodbye to her past. she doesn’t crumble—she rises. And in her rising, I saw strength wrapped in sorrow, and leadership born from loss. She’s no longer just surviving—she’s choosing. And I loved her for it.

🔥💛 Ember
Ember’s storyline shines with themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the quiet bonds of friendship. She steps up in the face of hardship, showing us what it means to stand by those you care about. Her journey isn’t about romance—it’s about courage, solidarity, and the strength needed to help carry the world when it’s heavy.
🛡️🌲 Graeden
Graeden continues to steal the show. Though he stays behind at Ari’s request, his loyalty never wavers. His heart always knew where she was. His love isn’t loud—it’s constant. He doesn’t need to prove it with grand gestures because his entire soul is already pledged to her. The way he supports her, remembers her, and quietly says, "I promised I’d come for you,” I say “Neither the Vicious seas nor the darkest nights would keep me from fulfilling that promise."… I mean, I’m still recovering 😭
✨🍂 Aesthetic Vibe
Golden light behind waterfalls. Boots brushing across castle stone. Shadows and stolen glances. A crown worn not for power, but for love and hope. A heartbeat that remembers.
⚠️ Content Warnings
• Mentions of death and attempted self‑harm (handled gently)
• Mild curse words
• Clean romance (kisses only)
• Parental conflict
📖 Final Thoughts
Shadows of Gold is a crown‑jeweled masterpiece of second chances, steadfast friendship, and fierce devotion. It’s for the queens who walk through fire and still keep their grace. For those who choose loyalty over comfort. And for anyone who believes that the bonds between friends can be just as powerful as those of love.
That cliffhanger nearly sent me into a spiral, but if it means seeing Ari’s enemies crumble in the next installment, I’m absolutely here for it. 🗡️👑🔥

This is the 3rd book in the "Fallen Kingdom" series. I am usually a quick reader. Yet, this read made me want to slow down, soak up the story, and fully immerse myself within the fantasy world. With the different POVs, I not only felt like I was reading a movie. Yet, one minute I was giggling kicking my feet, and the next questioning why i enjoyed being hurt like this. I'm honestly so emotionally attached to the characters, and their missions; each time i opened a chapter, i felt like i was visiting old friends. This is an epic fantasy, with romance mixed it..but that isnt the main plot. Plus dragon shifters and thunderbirds. Also, my  baby Tib better be kept safe at all costs, im looking at you, Kim 👀. I haven't had a book make me want to transport myself /get immersed in the world like this one did in a long time. The plot (chefs kiss), the pace (perfect), and the characters/character growth? well that was better than a reality tv show! 10/10 recommend if you love reading fantasy!

The dark remnants Ari/Tib carry are waking, twisting their thoughts and hungering for control. When they reach the glittering shores of Taiatum, they’re met not with sanctuary but suspicion. The guardians are dying, and unless Ari and Tib expose the real killer, they’ll be executed for crimes they didn’t commit. Bound from her magic by ancient runes, Ember has lived the past few years as an outsider. But she must choose between loyalty to a people who have turned their backs on her or claiming the truth of who she is. On the cliffs of the Starfallen’s new home, Graeden anxiously awaits Ari’s return while overseeing Isla’s imprisonment. When he learns Ari is in danger, he’ll risk everything to protect the woman he loves, even if that means trusting the fairy responsible for the slaughter of countless Starfallen. As the ravaging darkness spreads across the Four Realms, enemies must become allies, fractured hearts must heal, and all must rise to survive the coming storm.

If you're craving...Hidden Identities, Friends-to-lover, No-spice romance, Runic tattoo magic, Thunderbirds, Shadow shifting, Shared body heat to stay warm, Cinnamon roll MMC, dragonshifter, Betrayal, "I promised I'd come for you."...dont sleep on this next read!

Book 📕 blurb: Ari & Tib have set off to find the legendary Taiatum, desperate to rid themselves of the darkness once and for all. But when they reach the kingdom, they are met with suspicion instead of help. As Taiatum's guardians are being killed, Ari & Tib are the main suspects, and if they can't find the real killer, they will be executed. Ember is a guardian who will risk all to help Ari & Tib, while trying to save her beloved home. Meanwhile, Graeden stays behind to take care of the Starfallen, waiting Ari's return. But when he learns Ari is in danger, he'll risk everything to save her. Can they rise together to save Taiatum?
My 💭:
First of all, I cannot say enough good things about this series or about K.B. Benson. She has written this world in such a way that I can't get over these characters. I'm so excited to see where she takes the story next! Ari's growth as a character from when were first introduced to her in Well of Eida to now is compelling, stirring, and so very thoughtful. The addition of Ember was such a great one to the continuation of this story. Her thoughts led some clarity to the mysteries of Taiatum that might otherwise have gone unsolved. Tib certainly came into his own in the book. I still hate Caelum, and that's about all I can say on that without my blood pressure rising. But seriously, if Kim wanted to write a character named Rachel to kill him...I'd be more than happy with that! 🤣 You love to hate that guy, honestly. Graeden remains a steady presence who works hard and loves harder. He's as loyal as the day we met him, and I'm always #teamgraeden !! If you haven't started this series yet, you might want to soon! You'll be hooked!!
What to expect:
👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨S W O O N Y 🥰 kisses only. No spice
🪄 Ari & Graeden are shape shifters. The darkness of Taiatum is in play here. Lots of other talks of magic, mostly elemental. There are some spells.
⚔️ There is lots of action, and some violence (nothing gratuitous)
3️⃣#3 in an incomplete series
🤬 Some cursing, nothing excessive. Mostly made up curses from the world.

Congrats to Kim for abother amazing book!📕

Ahhh this book was perfect!!! 🤩 It was so wonderful to be back in this world and with this cast of characters. To be honest, I’d forgotten a lot from the first two books 😅, but that didn’t detract from the amazingness of this book and I was able to follow along pretty well.

In Shadows of Gold, we’ve left Eida and spend the majority of the book in Taiatum, a hidden realm of magic, mystery, and a people who are blessed by the gods. They use rune magic to access the four seasons of the gods. I thought the way they accessed the essences of summer, spring, fall, and winter for various uses was so cool! The whole rune magic did make me a little uncomfortable at times lol, as I’m a Christian and I’ve always viewed that as demonic and witchcrafty, but the author wrote it in a way that it was just a unique magic system for a fantasy book, not something inherently evil.

Ari, Graedon, and Ember were all such great POV characters, and you really felt for and rooted for them! Ari has gone through so much and dealt with so much darkness, but she never let it overtake her. I feel like Graedon didn’t have too much purpose in this book, and was more there on the sidelines. Still love him though. 😍 Ember was a really nice addition to the story, and I loved her character so much! Her life and world is so cool, but there’s betrayals and deception everywhere. Her and Tib were so cute together! 🥹

Also can I just say how much I HATE Caelum?? He’s the worst! Such a chillingly evil villain that just keeps popping back up during the worst moments. 😡

As per usual with the Fallen Kingdom series, Shadows of Gold was riddled with action, danger, twists, and events that have you anxiously turning the pages! There’s never a dull moment and I loved every second of it, even when I feared and hurt for the characters. 😭

K. B. Benson writes some of the best fantasy books out there, and I’m sooo excited to see where she takes us next!! 😆😍

Another amazing book in this series! We are introduced to a new world and characters, but yet it just feels like a natural continuation of the story. The story progression and character development are done so well. I loved the third POV that was added!

Minor spoilers for the first two books. Ari and Tib must journey to Taiatum if they want any chance to free themselves from the darkness that still lingers within them. But things have not gone well on the island since Tib first visited, and Ari and Tib are met with apprehension and distrust. Ember, the island guardian who helped Tib last time, is still serving her punishment for doing so against the matriarch's wishes. And Graeden reluctantly stayed behind with the Starfallen as they settle into their new home, but he won't hesitate to come after Ari if he senses she's in trouble.

In Shadows of Gold, we see the story and world through Ember's perspective, along with Ari and Graeden's. I really enjoyed the three different POVs, especially how they were each their own character, but always engaging and interesting. Like the first two books, there are so many twists and turns from the get go, and I flew through this book. I cannot wait for book 4!!

Thanks to the author for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

The series kicks off with “The Well of Eida,” introducing unforgettable characters Ari, Tib, and Graeden. This captivating young adult fantasy series is a must-read for all ages, combining arena fighting, dragons, vicious trolls, a dystopian-type setting, and romance (not spicy) in a thrilling narrative.

The third installment exceeds all expectations, proving that the series only gets better. I do not want to go into too many specific details in this review, as it is the third book in a series (a series I highly recommend), and I don’t want to spoil the magic. With that said, this book was even better than the first two in the series, and I didn’t think that was possible. A fantastic new character emerges, adding depth and excitement that will win over even the toughest critics. The shift in setting does not diminish the intense fantasy atmosphere; it enhances the stakes.

After discovering the author on Instagram, I took a chance on this series – and it has become my favorite of the year. I devoured all three books in just a month, showcasing their binge-worthy nature. Don’t miss out on this exceptional series that promises to keep you on the edge of your seat!

Shadows of Gold is the third book in K.B. Benson’s The Fallen Kingdoms series. This time around, Ari and Tib travel to the mysterious realm of Taiatum to rid themselves of the darkness that has taken hold inside of them. Meanwhile, Graeden stays behind in Cliffside - the Starfallen’s new home – to try to rebuild their community.

I used to be an ordinary girl from Bridgewick. One who loved to dance and lay beneath the sunlight. When Caelum sacrificed me to the Well of Eida, I became a monster. I became a dragon shifter and then somehow found myself wielding Starfallen magic. I lost that magic, and now I’m here attempting to shift into shadow? It’s too much, and I don’t want it.

This book was equally as entertaining as the first two and built upon the world and characters in a really vivid and engaging way. Ember, a guardian of Taiatum, is added as a third POV and I appreciated how each character retains a distinct voice and different goals and values. The magic system, character development, and world building in this series are all well written, and I have always ended the stories keen to read the next one.

*Thank you to the author for an ARC*

I absolutely love The Fallen Kingdoms series and was highly anticipating Shadows of Gold. I re-read book 1 and 2 in preparation and dived straight it, my god! It was so good! I was captivated from the offset and to be honest at this stage I'm so invested in all of the characters I was on tender hooks when one wasn't mentioned for awhile... I mean we're in volatile times.
KB's writing goes from strength to strength, the descriptions are vivid and really paint the picture in your mind as you read. The characters development grows throughout each book and it's really good to see how far they've come. I've got to say I'm still Team Graeden, god loves that man! I love him! Ari and Inaara are just perfection, they've grown so much.
The storyline had me gripped, I loved how this story progressed and what it gave us - no spoilers. The ending!! Shadows of Gold gave us everything and took every emotion from us!
I absolutely loved it, highly recommend it to everyone and I can't wait for book 4

Oh my word.

KB did it again! I can’t express how FUN these books are! And frustrating. And thrilling. Y’all know I’m a sucker for epic fantasy battles and wars….with dragons and phoenixes and magic - oh my! (I was thinking “lions and tigers and bears….” Get it?! 😜)

This third book from KB Benson’s The Fallen Kingdoms series was just as fantastic as the first two. I get so sucked it! Forget responsibilities. Forget the loads of other things I need to get done. Whatever.

They. Can. Wait.

I just love a good plot with character growth, adventure, tension and romance. (I always say I don’t need the romance part but maybe I really do!) The clean, swoony romances in these books are just right!

The story in Shadows of Gold is dark and gritty, with creative world-building and new characters. A new setting, although can be jarring for some books, was introduced without being too wordy or, gasp, boring. Lol! I love how vivid these worlds become in my mind.

I always struggle with writing spoiler-free reviews because I TRULY don’t wanna give anything away. I love certain scenes with certain characters that do certain things and….well, how do you share it?!?

So I resort to just saying “GO READ THE BOOK!”

I WILL share that I didn’t think I’d like Ember as much as I like Ari….. I was wrong. She’s wonderful. And I didn’t think I’d EVER fall for Tib. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Wrong there, too. I’m finding him quite endearing.

But my heart still belongs to Graeden. 🩵

And I still hate a certain someone. And have been informed my hatred may grow…. Not nice. Totally not nice, Kim.

So lemme back up….. How do you write a spoiler-free review without giving too much away? I guess you do what I just did. 😬

I enjoyed this book and look forward to the 4th one.
I loved the storyline in this book. and being able to explore a new realm with new characters.
I liked Ember and the addition of the silver eagles. Tib and Ember deserve to be happy together, and if that doesn't happen, I will riot.
Taiatum sounds beautiful, and I loved that it was basically the pokemon Torterra.
I am intrigued by Isla and her being a bone fairy, although I do think Graeden let her leave to easily.

I didn't like that the guardians were so quick to punish a child or that there was much mystery surrounding the child.
I felt the story was a bit predictable at times.
I also hated that Citali kissed Graeden. I feel as though in the previous book, she came to respect Ari, and it didn't make sense reason for her to disrespect Ari like that after what Ari did for them. It felt unnecessary and didn't really add anything to the storyline.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Wow! I think this is my favorite one yet! We are sent into a new world with new magic and new POVs (love the multiple POVs this one gives us). I wasn't sure I was going to like Ember..but she won me over and I liked seeing a different side of Tib too. Ari and Graeden are still my favorite and so many things happen in this book, but it's really hard to talk about without giving things away. There are so many twists and turns (that I love trying to figure out), and a very infuriating someone shows his face. The romance is perfect and just adds to the story without distracting from it. I will say...I have never wanted to be caught in a rainstorm more...IYKYK 😉. Thank you KB Benson for allowing me to ARC read for you! I'm hooked on this series and can't wait for the next book!

ARC Review

Shadows of Gold is the third book in The Fallen Kingdoms series (The first two books are Well of Eida and Reign of Darkness).

Do you love dragons? Shifters? Nature/rune magic? New magical places? Fierce fmcs? The most hated villain of all time? Me too!

I LOVED this book! I found a new favorite character, the villain is still my number 1 most hated villain ever, and the new magic system was so fun and cool! It’s like a seasonal/nature connected to your thoughts rune magic! I want to have Ember’s powers!

There is good romance in this book too! (No spice, but great yearning). I love a good slow burn! 🔥 There are two different couples and I love both of them!

You definitely need to read the first two book in the series before this one (but don’t fret, the first two are amazing too). It’s an epic fantasy and I feel like we’re just getting started! I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here!

Holy majoly! This book was incredible! I loved meeting the new character, Ember, who is the sweetest, kindest soul ever! and reading about her beautiful people, world and magic!

The villain is possibly thee worst villain ever! I don't know how as sweet as K.B. Benson can write such a vile, cruel and conniving character. She has me wishing nothing but awful things for him.

The last 20% of this book is when things really started popping off. Not even kidding, I was so stressed and my heart was pounding the entire time! I just love when a book can make you react so strongly, and let me tell you, this book absolutely did for me.

I have loved this series from the very beginning HIGHLY recommend! If anything, so I can have other people to rant about how evil the villain is.

My only gripe was that Ari is still in love with Graeden when it should've been Tib (#TeamTibPorVida)

In Shadows of Gold we get to explore a whole new world, and magic system. We got hints of it in the previous books, but it was so cool to get more insight into everything.
Loved the addition of Embers character and POV. She is a great contrast to the world views of the other character. While others see ferocity as one of their greatest strengths Ember really struggles with that point of view. I’m very excited to see more of her in the future.
And of course we get even more of our favorite characters like Ari, Greaden, and Tib. And the person we all love to hate 😒 Caelum. Truly an insufferable man.
I cannot wait for book four, and I’m so excited to see where this story goes. I have a few theories of my own so im looking forward to seeing if I’m right.

It’s always such a great feeling to return to this magical kingdom. Book 3 had a completely different setting, and honestly, I enjoyed it even more because of that. The characters, their individual POVs, and the dynamics between them felt so wholesome and well-developed.
This one was a bit on the longer side, with a lot of emotional depth and detailed inner thoughts, which slightly threw me off at times. And yes… it will make you tear up 😭
I’m so glad the love triangle finally ended in this book (finally!). The author also did an amazing job making me truly hate the villain, like, from the depths of my heart 😤 I’m super curious to see where his story goes next. Can’t wait for Book 4! 😍 #KBPhoenix

This book was just as great as the first 2. The depth of the characters, their compassion and will to fight is amazing. The story line was easy to follow and the feelings and emotions that you feel for the characters make you feel like you are on a roller coaster. You will laugh, you will feel the angst, you will feel the anger, you will just feel it all! And I didn't think I could dislike the villain any more than I already did, and K.B. made is possible. I can not wait to find out if he FINALLY gets what's coming to him, because if the FMC doesn't kill him I may try to find a way!! All in all I can't wait for the next book!

ARC review of Shadows of Gold by KB Benson

Thank you so much for choosing me to be an ARC reader.

This was such a well written book. The world building was great! I will be totally honest and say that I did not read the first two books. I do not feel like I was missing anything by not having read them.

I do have to say that I was never completely caught up in the story and feel like it was missing something. I needed something to completely capture my attention and make me want to devour this story. I didn’t get that.

This is still an amazing story and a good read. I am looking forward to what comes next.

What a great story! Ari and Tib travel to the city of shadow and gold, hoping to get the darkeness removed. But the matriarch refuses and demands they leave. Ember, the guardian that helped Tib before, knows this is wrong. Her magic has been bound since Tib left, but with the encouragement of her gods, she takes her power back.

But something else is working on the island, a sinster person with evil plans. Guardians are dying missing their shadows. What is truly happening here? And how can Ari shift without her pair?

Magic is at work. Lines are crossed. And secrets are kept. But it is so good to see it come to light! A definite must read!

Thrilled to receive an ARC copy of this book after loving the first two, and honestly this series gets better and better with each book. The world building is fantastic, the introduction of the new setting brings new life to the story with new magic, new creatures and new characters. The magic is very well done, having multiple magic systems that all work differently adds a lot of dimension and interest to the story.
Loved having a new character and POV, and a really sweet gently building romance arc for Tib that contrasts the enemies to lovers type romance that Ari has. The story itself contains plenty of action and darker moments, and very intrigued to see what’s yet to come.

Another amazing publication by the amazing KB Benson. This series has my heart. This book … I don’t even know where to begin. The sweetness between the couples(so many good quotes)…. The HATE of the villain (and boy do I love to hate him)… I literally yelled at my book(sorry daughter for waking you). I love when a story makes me yell at the characters like they can hear me. Can I say how much I loved the multi PoVs I loved the different povs!!! I wish I could share everything I loved about this without spoiling the series or this book. Read this series. I loved it so much.

Loved!
I swear these get better by the book!
I love the adventure of travel that Ari and Tib have to go on, I really enjoyed the new characters as well! I was worried that now that they are out of Eida, the story would become boring and die. But Kim didn’t disappoint with her travel and plans.
This is a series that I recommend if you are into fantasy, it’s definitely its own type with a serious uniqueness!
Graeden is still my personal favorite character in this entire series
And Caelum 100% is my mortal enemy!

Shadows of Gold is brilliantly written. KB brings us further into the realm and lore introducing new characters and furthering the darkness in our villain. You will be up late into the night flipping pages and when you get to the end you will be ready for more! It’s so good I absolutely love Ari and Graeden. I can’t wait to see where Tib goes in the next book and I look forward to more Ember. Very well done!
