Beginning with our main character waking from a coma to devastating news; totally unrelated to the current crisis: roaming diseased humans (whose behaviors suspiciously mimic those of the Late-Night- Movie Zombies); I certainly did not think, “Wow, this is going to be a fun read!”. Intriguing, fast-paced, action-adventure: sure; fun, no.
I was so very, very wrong. I find myself still ridiculously impressed and pleased that Ms. McKay presented Bobby’s story in such a fashion. This sequel to Undead is consuming. Comprised of small, deliberate mysteries, complete with obscure, baffling clues; this reader’s mind never strayed.
The display of dynamics within the small group of teens, forced together, just to have a glimmer of hope against the Zombie-like crowd is spot-on. Underlying currents: wariness, jealously, admiration, fear and sadness, swirl around the characters, twisting, enveloping and confusing. Churning emotions decrease focus, increase discord, frustration and distrust.
With the action-adventure aspect of physical battles between teens and Zoms, the mystery of where Bobby’s best friend, Smitty is hiding (assuming he is still alive); never-minding the why of Bobby’s mom abandoning her; comatose, alone in a strange hospital, and pants-less; to run off and hide Smitty; it is so easy to be drawn in and invested in the tale. With the shocking revelation that The Enemy is quite likely made up of both Good Guys and Bad Guys, it becomes nearly impossible to stop reading.
These attributes are almost secondary to Ms. McKay’s charming and delightful writing style. As if the author feels immediate remorse for scaring (or grossing out) her audience, in comes the comic relief, effortlessly. A perfect fit, the humor enriches the entire book, keeping the tone from dropping to down-right dismal. Unexpected joy came from Bobby’s predicament of being pants-less, thus flashing her pals as she fights for her life, or making hilarious and embarrassing suctioning noises as naked thighs stick to a desk-top on which Bobby perches. Chastising herself harshly when Smitty-themed fantasies sneak into her mind; coupled with her comfortable and correct use of “dorky” endeared me to Bobby.
Although I started this trilogy right in the middle, I simply must know how Bobby’s story ends. I am already looking forward to Ms. McKay’s next book.

Unfed sequel to Undead was an action packed ride! Zombies, gore, witty humor, and a little romance were laced through this fun read.
We pick up six weeks from where Undead left us with Bobby and Smitty on another school bus, escaping zombies and Xanthro pursuers. Smitty was attacked and bitten, but he received the last antidote so no worries there. Unfortunately, the bus tumbles and everything fades to black for Bobby. She wakes up in a hospital and finds out she’s been unconscious for six weeks, and only Pete and Alice have been accounted for. Smitty, her charming, rebel, sort-of-boyfriend, is MIA, and her mother is believed to be dead. Also, Scotland has been overrun with zombies. Of course, right as she is assured all is safe, things go completely to hell and zombies are everywhere! The horror/adventure that has become Bobby’s life begins again.
I love a good zombie tale! It combines my love of survival stories with horror and adrenaline rushes that come from the inevitable chases. You can find all of that in this series, however, where Undead and Unfed shine is definitely in the humor department. Clever, snarky humor with campy references to favorite shows and movies such as The Terminator, Aliens, and Buffy throughout this story are sure to make you giggle.
Bobby is her usual take charge self always soldiering on and quick thinking on her feet. Alice the previous (well, mostly) mean-girl, provides sass and dumb blonde clichés, and Pete is loveable as the nerdy group brain. Russ is a new addition to the motley crew, handsome, with ninja like skills. Smitty, my favorite sweet, rebel “bad-boy” was missing in much of this story and his absence left a huge hole for me. One of the reasons I loved Undead so much is because of the push and pull between Smitty and Bobby which we don’t get until well after the 50% mark. Overall, I think this is the main reason I didn’t love Unfed as much as Undead.
Even though I didn’t like Unfed quite as much as it’s predecessor, it was a good follow-up, and I enjoyed the ride. Unfed wraps up somewhat, but as with any good zombie tale there are things left up in the air and the future is far from certain… This leaves me to wonder if there is another book in the works for this series.
A copy was provided by Chicken House through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
Unfed is just as funny and entertaining as book one and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The pace is quick and picks up throughout and kept me turning the pages. I was worried that Unfed might be too similar to book one, Undead, since this book once again sees Bobby running away from the zoms but Kirsty McKay managed to keep it fresh and different, there was a little more to what's going on in Unfed, so I didn't feel like I was just reading the same book again. I absolutely love Bobby's inner monologue and the banter between the characters, it's just my kind of humour and I was laughing my butt off through the whole book. I have to say though, during the guys search for Smitty and Bobby's Mom there were times when things happened a bit too conveniently and were unbelievable, like a random walkie talkie showing up out of nowhere, just when the guys need it. But these things were easy enough to overlook since the book is nice and light and is still full of lots of Zombie action. The storyline is also expanded on in Unfed and we're starting to get a view of the bigger picture, it's not just a gore-fest lol. If you liked book one then needless to say you will like this too and after you'll be just like me, dying for book three!
Favourite quotes 'Smitty? The voice behind me makes me twist round awkwardly, and my feet almost slip from under me. A hand catches me under the elbow.'
''Miss me?' He's smiling but his eyes are deadly serious. I can feel the heat coming off his body. I open my mouth to make some wise guy retort, but I'm all out of clever. I want to kiss him, I hate that I want to. I hope he makes me do it anyway.'
Unfed is, like Undead, genuinely laugh-out-loud funny. I couldn’t read it at night because my guffaws woke my husband up. The kids in this series interact with each other like normal, bratty, sarcastic teenagers, but it’s saved from being just a series of hilarious sketches by the genuine heroism and selflessness of the characters as they risk their own lives to save each other time and time again.
"Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream If you see a zombie, don't forget to scream..."
A cute and fun follow up to a series I started so so long ago! It was a silly, gory, action-packed zombie story- full of new misses, running escapes and undead animals and people. It was cute to be back with Bobby and her group of misfits as they try to understand what is going on with the outbreak and how they are going to survive. As you can imagine, it's hard to trust everyone and hard to bring everyone alive and well through to the last page. Cute addition, I'm glad I read it. but it does seem to leave things with a possibility of another installment. Will we have another one? I guess I'll keep an eye out!
A good continuation that picks up about 6 weeks after the first book. A lot of action and adventure while trying to escape the undead and the evil corporation that created them. A lot of fun.
This review (and others) can be seen in all its properly formatted glory on my blog Beauty and the Bookshelf.
After devouring--and surprisingly loving--Undead I immediately picked up the sequel. I was dying to know what happened next, especially after THAT ENDING. And I missed Smitty. (He really is the best.) So I began Unfed as soon as possible, and while I didn't love it as much as Undead and it went in a direction I super wasn't expecting, I still liked it!
Kirsty McKay's Undead series is not your average zombie series. It's more along the lines of Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead: there are zombies and they're deadly and want to eeaaatttt yyooouuuu, but this ain't no Walking Dead. This is a more comedic, fun approach to rotten flesh eaters. And let me tell you: I love it. I read this series because I wanted something meaningless like a Hallmark movie--maybe SyFy is more appropriate here--but I ended up being totally engrossed in these books and just loving them. They're kind of ridiculous and rather unrealistic and sort of over the top but it works and honestly, I don't even care. It's a feel good sort of series...but with zombies. Weird, I know. But damn, it's well worth the read.
Unfed continues soon after where Undead left off, and that's where you can color me surprised. I was NOT expecting the story to go there--to be there--but it's definitely interesting and a bit of a twist to your typical zombie story. We get more of an explanation as to how this random zombie apocalypse in Scotland started and just what the hell is going--well, sort of. And spoiler alert, the military and science gets involved but whose side are they on, you know? There are new characters and old characters--computer geek Pete, queen bitch Alice, just your average girl in a zombie world Alice, and rebel bad boy Smitty (my absolute favorite)--and a very different setting. And of course there are zombies. Lots of zombies. And some casualties and plot twists and all around excellence.
I may be just the teeniest bit not in love with Unfed because of how different it was from Undead, but I still am very much a fan and I just really, really like these books, okay? I watch The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, but I wouldn't really say I'm a fan of zombies. I am, however, a fan of this series and it's light and witty take on zombies and gore and teenagers in peril and stereotypical characters that you actually care about. I just have a bone to pick about that ending BECAUSE HOW IS THERE NOT A THIRD BOOK? HOW? R U D E. We deserve more answers about this zombie world and more Smitty (and, yeah, the other characters too).
Unfed is the sequel to the novel Undead. In this story, Bobby has survived her trip.... But her best (totally not boy-) friend Smitty is missing. She wakes up in a quarantined Scotland, and is told that four survived, her mother not among them. But something doesn't add up. When she finds a clue, she gets new hope, and knows that she has got to find Smitty and fast. It becomes a race against time, the undead, and a few other nasties to solve this unraveling puzzle, and to save the living.
----
I have to admit, Unfed has impressed me. Initially, I was drawn in by the cover. I mean, look at it. That's pretty cool. I was prepared for the spot of disappointment that normally fills me up after I read a zombie book. But this one exceeded expectations, and is honestly the first zombie book I've read so far that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Another problem I thought I might encounter was the fact that this is book two, when I haven't read book one. This didn't make a difference on my reading experience at all. I never felt that I was missing out on previous story or wondering what had previously happened to cause this. Everything is well explained or reintroduced in this sequel.
I love Bobby. She reminds me a little bit of Buffy, in that she knows that she has butts to kick and isn't afraid to do so if it means saving the people that she loves (or humanity. You know, whichever comes first). She's sassy and hilarious. I laughed out loud more than once while reading, and part of this is due to the dark British humor.
There is gore in this book, but that's kind of to be expected in a zombie book- especially one with a girl holding a bloody chainsaw on the cover. I found it to be dark but not overly so, and often times this ew-factor was amplified by some humor. It's a great mix of brain eating and wit.
I definitely recommend this for fans of zombies and especially to young adult readers. This was a refreshing change for me, and I hope you enjoy it too. If you prefer more horror movie type mature zombies, or contrarily, dislike any amount of gore, be warned.
Thanks to Netgalley and Scholastic for my copy in exchange for an honest review. This review can also be found on my blog, Bitches n Prose.
This is Book II, but I jumped right in and was off and running on a wild adventure with Bobby and her gang.
This young adult zombie novel is a bit different from the norm. It is funny and snarky in a sick way and I had a great time reading it.
Zombie hordes and teenage heroes run AMOK in quarantined Scotland. How did the zombies come to be? Why are they so different from a normal zombie? (Is there such a thing?) They seem to be able to think and figure things out for themselves, albeit slowly.
I loved when Bobby was running and jumping from pipe to pipe like a gymnast above the zombies head. Will she fall? What do you think? I can picture them all on the hospital gurney, barreling down the hospital corridor, plowing through the zombies as they fly right and left, not even bothering to try to get out of the way. There is plenty of blood, guts and body parts flying to satisfy zombie lovers everywhere.
I love Bobby and hate Alice, the whiny pretty girl that never has a hair out of place. Bobby is more of a tomboy. She doesn’t need protecting, she’ll do it herself. Alice is quite the trip. She does nothing but complain. She is not like the innocent Alice in wonderland. But I do wonder about her. Sometimes the one you love to hate can surprise you. Zombinos – kid zombies. Lol
Unfed is well written, fast paced and hilariously funny. Kirsty described the characters so well, I could picture them in my head. And the zombies, well, you will have to find out for yourself. Oh yeah, Kirsty. I hope you are rapidly writing the next book, because I have to know what the future has in store for our teenager heroes.
I won this ARC paperback in a Box o Books giveaway on the Tiffany Loves Books blog. I love adding books to my collection. Thanks Tiffany and Kirsty.
the sequel to undead and i took my time reading this book because i wanted to save every moment because i know there hasn't be any announcement of a third book.
this series has been utterly good, action packed and hilariously funny to read that once i pick up the book i just cant stop reading it. this book picks up with bobby waking up in a hospital the always cliche thing that happens in any zombie movie or book. Bobby is joined by the returning characters of alice and pete with the newly joined russ as they make their way out of hospital as a infected horde moves through. However the infected aren't the only thing chasing them the military of xanthro are also hot on the groups trail.
It turns out that Bobby's mother is also alive but has only left few clues to help discover where she is hiding, Bobby's journey also consist of finding smitty who also survived the crash but never made it to the hospital with the rest of the group.
Alice is infected with the disease but is immune to it HA! oh the irony in this is just makes it all the more worth reading.
SERIOUSLY IS THERE GOING TO BE A THIRD BOOK? TELL ME ITS NOT JUST GOING TO END LIKE THAT??
Oh my goodness. This book is incredible. I picked the first one up blindly, not really knowing what to expect. I finished the first one quickly and ⊰LOVED⊱ it!! Practically ran to my library to get the second one. Which i just finished and girl let me tell you 😦. Not one! Not two! Not three But FOUR MEGA plot twists… IN THE LAST 30 PAGES!!! There was no way for me to even guess these! I adore the way that Kirsty writes these zombie books. I felt as though i was transported to Scotland with Bobby and her mad-clan of high school “friends”. In the first book you obviously notice how Alice would never normally be seen with these certain characters (ex: Pete). However in the second book I love how they all seem to just recognize that they need each other one way or another. I was totally Smitten with Smitty in the first book and i’ll say he didn’t disappoint in the second. Obviously some people might disagree but this book is phenomenal. I would recommend this to anybody. This book is for the people and it did not disappoint! ^[⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️]^

The second YA zombie thriller in the Undead series didn't grab my attention quite as much as the first. It felt like a lot of the scenes were a bit similar to the first book and it seemed repetitive to me.
I did still enjoy the story overall as it brought the same sass and humor as the first. I wasn't, however, a fan of the open ending. I was hoping there was a third book to really wrap things up but considering this one was published 10 years ago and there is no third yet I'm guessing this is the end of the series.
The book was interesting and moved at a quick pace. The book is very action packed. However, because it is so action packed and short (270 pages), there is very little else. There is virtually no character development or plot development. The story just jumps from one action sequence to the next. Alice, Smitty, Pete, and Bobby's mom are largely just charictures with no depth. Smitty is the wise-ass, Alice is the annoying, popular girl, Pete is the uber-smart geek. At one point in the book, they make a comment that they have checked on the kids parents and they are fine and alive. Bobby realizes she hadn't even thought about her friends families at all. I'd go even further to say the author didn't even think about these supporting characters at all. They are little more than window dressing, occasionally used to help move from one point of action to another.
The other thing I didn't really care for was the gimmick of ending with a cliffhanger, which was done in the first novel as well. I don't mind leaving a story with more story to be told, but don't like a novel to not finish its internal story arc. Each novel in the series should have an internal story arc, that is completed in that novel, while advancing the series arc at the same time. For example, the Harry Potter series. Each book has its own story arc (chamber of secrets, tri-wizard tournament, etc) that concludes at the end of the book. However, each book also contributes towards the series arc, Harry vs. voldemort, that is concluded in the last book. Undead and Unfed have no internal story arc but only a series arc that is told in pieces. when broken up this way, I feel it is a gimmick in order to sell more books (a trilogy vs one large book). I would prefer one, complete story rather than pieces. Some may argue that Bobby searching for Smitty and her mom are this books internal arc, but I would disagree. That is just a continuation from the first book. there is no separate internal story, just the larger series arc of which this is the next phase.
Still, the book is fairly witty and entertaining. I'll read the next book when it comes out, at my library, not the bookstore.
Characters: This time round, Bobby is smarter and funnier. Seeing the 'apocalypse' through her eyes is entertaining because she is realistic but still able to see the farcical side of things like zombie cows. The others are all the same as ever, their character voices are very individual throughout. The relationships between the gang seem to be getting stronger (particularly between Bobby and Smitty, who she just couldn't stop dreaming about, much to my annoyance). There is a new member of the gang, Russ, and it's really hard to believe that the others aren't suspicious of him at all.
Plot: The story picks up just after where Undead left off - the bus has crashed, and when Bobby wakes up from a coma in a military hospital six weeks later, the outbreak has taken over the whole of Scotland, which is quarantined. Almost straight away the supposedly secure underground hospital is breached and overrun with 'zoms' - forcing Bobby and the old gang to try to fight their way out and find Bobby's mother and Smitty somewhere outside. This is made more difficult by the fact Xanthro are still after them, presumably because Smitty is the only source of the antidote and it is implied that Xanthro had been experimenting on Bobby and Alice in the hospital. There is a lot more action in this book than the first, with higher stakes and larger amounts of zombies and gore. There a few unbelievable things, such as the fact that Smitty can drive a train and that everybody has guns (this is Scotland, not the US) but aside from that the book is an enjoyable read which moves along at a fast pace, and has several mini-cliffhangers which keep you reading.
Other Comments: I enjoyed this book more than the first and I think Unfed successfully builds on Undead and is stronger than the first book, which is rare with sequels. I would definitely recommend this to fans of Charlie Higson's The Enemy, as it has a similar style of unflinching gore and humour.
So this is the second book in this series by Kirsty McKay. Our heroes Roberta, Smitty, Alice and Pete return in this book to fight/run from the undead hordes and from the Xanthro corporation.
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***
The plot to this book is pretty basic, our heroes wake up in a hospital, which is an over used cliché in the zombie genre. They fight their way out of the hospital, which turns out to be underground, and they go looking for Smitty who wasn't with them when they woke up. They do a bunch of fighting and running from the zombies and the Xanthro corporation (Who made the zombies), along with making some jokes and pop culture references, and that's really all they do in this book. There's not much of a plot other than, "There's Xanthro or some zombies, run!"
I will admit I liked the 2 Spider-Man references and the mention of "Fallout 5," which made me laugh since it doesn't even exist in the real world yet, those things did make me smile.
So what do I think of the book overall? It's not that great. It's got a few funny parts and some action packed parts but all in all it's not very good. If this author makes a third book to finish out the series, I will probably read it just to say I have completed it. If you skip this one, you are not missing anything great.
I'd like to keep this review simple and to the point. I recieved this from the publisher for an honest review and I have never read the first book in this, what I hope is a series, and not once did I feel as though I absolutely needed to while reading this! I was able to understand what had happened and what was now taking place because of the previous book, without having read it. The author, Kirsty McKay did this wonderfully without an actual information dumping taking place. Here and there she reminded the reader of what happened in the previous book, but not once was I forced to swallow an entire paragraph or chapter dedicated to it. Thank you, McKay!
Now aside from that, this book was great!! OMG if I hadn't been forced to put it down due to life's circumstances getting in the way, I would have finished it much sooner. Now I can't wait for the next installment! I had so much fun running with Bobby and her small group of friend and frienemies and hoped along with her that she would find Smitty once again, alive and well.
Despite never having read the first book, this was a blast and easy to follow! Now, I need to go get the other one as I find myself not wanting to leave Bobby and her zombie filled world behind.
First I have to say thanks to Scholastic and Netgalley for allowing me to read an e-galley of this book. I got the first book in the series last summer when I went to BEA, so was very excited to see this become available on Netgalley. I wasn't disappointed, I liked where the story went. A really good story, I enjoyed all the ups and downs, and the little obstacles they had to face, like the fact that Bobby had no pants for the first part of the book, because the ones she'd been wearing on the bus before it crashed had been destroyed from the crash, and she had no other clothes. A great story. Loved that it wasn't all about a "romance" between Bobby and Smitty, that it was kinda realistic for a zombie apocalypse story. I don't see that there is a third book in the series, and it definitely left off that it could be the end, but there was also a lot of openings for another book, which I'd love to read!
3.5-stars- The first in this series was unexpectedly good. I loved our intrepid heroine's dry and sarcastic sense of humor and luckily it's in the follow-up in spades. Unfortunately I felt like this book was nonstop action and I do like more interaction between my characters, even when they are running for their lives from zombies. I will be reading the next in this series, but I wish there had been a little bit more development in the overall storyline and the characters, especially in regard to the evil company manufacturing the poison that has created these zombies. Overall a quick, fun read.
Another fun book. I definitely missed Smitty & I'm a girl who likes romance so I was asking for more kissing despite the fact they were, you know, busy with zoms & such. I tried to find out of there's another book, but there's no info on her website as of yet. I'll definitely read whatever Mrs. McKay writes though :)
Listened to on CD. Absolutely loved the first novel and this one is as good or maybe even better. The story takes a turn I wasn't expecting and really delivers. I would love to see this made into a series or movie. Highly recommend. You can read this as a stand alone but you will miss out if you don't read the first one.
While it has been a long time since I read the first one, I still enjoyed the adventure of this book. It took me awhile to get into as I forgot what the characters were like from the first one and figuring out where they go to this point. It was less zombie and more run from the humans kind of thing but enjoyed the zombie animals aspects.
Kirsty McKay's Mean Girls meets Evil Dead duology has a funny bone it likes to suck on after its tissues have already been digested and its leftovers hardened in the large intestine of whoever had the craving to eat the meatiness in the first place. And the rest of the book is as delightfully gross as that is.
This is the sequel to Undead. In that book, Scotland became invaded by the Undead, from a carrot juice called The Carrot Man that had the Osiris disease mixed into it, leaving only a few survivors of a fatal road trip together and on the run. They thought they got to safety when Roberta Brook, or Bobby's, mom, who we learned works for Xanthro Corp who's devising a cure for the disease, supposedly, were able to get them on a school bus full of other survivors over to a safe haven. But Bobby wakes up after the bush crashes in a hospital with no clue where any of her other friends are, until a buff teen named Russ, alongside Pete, manages to get to her and update on a few things. Alice is in the hospital too, which is being invaded with the Undead as they're speaking, but Bobby's temper-fueled and jokester of a boyfriend, Smitty, is missing, and he's the one Bobby injected the remaining cure into. Now they have to all escape from the hospital, rescue their friend, and find out what the hell has happened with the world since the crash.
One miniature criticism is these protagonists have to perform so many stunts and so many close calls it's amazing how much they manage to survive. Bobby even ends up in a circle of the Undead and is ducking down, preparing to be bitten when BAM. Saved at the last minute. Kind of crazy since a minor character is killed off kind of instantly yet they're bite and bulletproof. But in a way, that is the point. This book is meant to be a story of climbing across rooftops, jumping onto moving trains, outrunning helicopters and fending zombies off with a wheeled hospital bed. Implausible, yet totally adventurous and exciting.
The best part of this book, if you ask me, is when Bobby and the rest of the gang have to hide in these freezers holding dead bodies in order to hide from these gunmen after them. Simple, right? Just like Baywatch's hiding, right? No chance. Pete and Alice have to have their doors closed behind them, which they can't open from the inside. Bobby and Russ have to take a gamble keeping it open a centimeter in plain view if the guards look hard enough. And then it seems Bobby and Russ and the rest of her friends are about to die when they start looking through the freezers, and McKay somehow manages to really make my heart pound putting myself in their situation. I thought about what it was like when others know they are about to die. The atmosphere set it up perfectly. Not only that, but later on, when Pete and Alice are able to get out of their freezers, one of them is not breathing, suffering from hypothermia and an inability to breathe from being in that freezer. Being in that person's shoes left an extra chill at that.
Something I said I liked in the first book, as well as this one, were its very very small cast of characters. Bobby, Pete, Alice, Smitty, and the newest edition to the gang, Russ, feel together like a Breakfast Club you once had a lunch with at school where each and every one of them got a B- in Sociology. They're a ragtag of pals I'll never forget about. Bobby even admits that Pete and Alice can be sometimes annoying but after everything they went through together, they're now family, and that's the most tender line in the series. But it is heartwarming. It made me think about my best friends that became family to me and I think you might reflect on the friends you've survived the zombie apocalypse with.
In the first Undead book, the gist was these zombies were slow but very strong and one bite meant death. In this one, not only are they getting smarter, but a corporation, potentially Xanthro, is after them, and animals might have caught on to the Osiris disease. Basically, the Undead books are about as close as a book can get to a videogame, and even if it's at times an unrealistic-feeling videogame, being with these characters as they escape death time and time again makes it a prime example of literature fun. I mean, what did you expect when you saw the two covers, both from the knees down of a supposed cheerleader, the first one with a hatchet and the second one with a chainsaw, both bloodied purple?
This is the last book in the Undead series, and there's room for more. Like Proxy and Guardian by Alex London, I ended the series feeling a third book could easily have been in order. But both these series still had a satisfactory amount of pleasure, adventure, originality, and rereadability. Kirsty McKay has another book published called The Assassin's Game. Looking forward to it.
