The Power Playbook: Rules For Independence, Money, and Success by La La Anthony is an excellent book for any woman that desires to maximize her talents, potential and strengths on a professional level.
Using her years of experience in radio and television, La La shares many valuable lessons in this empowering book. I found myself totally invested from beginning to end. Her message is delivered in a straightforward and relatable way. She provides direct, and sharp insight with just the right precision, which never allows the reader to become bored. With practical and easy to follow advice, she offers great tips on how to slay in the business world.
This book ranges in topics from, “The Power of Fear” and “The Power of Your Brand” to “Learning to Reinvent Yourself”. Each chapter address a different, yet very important topic designed to help women excel in life. Just to give an example, in a chapter titled, “Salary Cap: Don’t Chase Money, Chase Your Purpose” La La states, The problem with making money your focus is that you will never feel satisfied. It will never be enough. At some point, you’ll realize that the money chase is unfulfilling. You’ll always need more. You will look up one day with perhaps all of the money in the world and ask yourself, “Why did I do this?’”. Here she makes a great point that is often forgotten in our quest for success.
I believe this book serves as an excellent roadmap for any woman on the journey to being her best self. It should be read by all women. For not only is it filled with great information, but it is also entertaining. I recommend reading this book with a pen and a pad so that you may take notes. If you are a boss lady, this is definitely a must have for your library.
More of an autobiography than “self help” category book. Felt scattered and unorganized. (There were also a few typos throughout the book, so I wonder if this didn’t go through a full editing process.) Did make good points, you just had to find them. Last couple chapters of the book were all about “girl power” and finding your “starting 5” of supporters in your life. These were the best chapters in the book.
It took me some time to come back and finish this Audio Book, but it was worth it. I don't know much about La La Anthony because I'm not much into Basketball and/or reality T.V., however after listening to her book, I have a new respect for her Hustle and advice. Her book is very short and insightful and it also relates to women and men alike.
This book blew me away. I have read countless other books such as Lean In, #GirlBoss, and The Woman Code. This book stood out and in my opinion is better than all of them, by far. I grew up watching MTV after school and TRL. I remember La La and didn't think much of her at the time or since really. I didn't realize how much of a success she has become and all of the things she has managed to accomplish since her days on MTV. I am amazed at La La's ability to give advice and not sound pretentious, she tells her story with humility but also with confidence.
Reading this book I felt like I had gained La La as a mentor or a big sister. If you have struggled to find a mentor or are currently looking for one, pick up this book! We often think of mentor relationships as personal and few things can replace having that personal connection with a mentor but this book comes as close as I have ever seen. I listened to this book in audio book form on my drive into work in the morning. It worked out perfectly since the chapters were about 20-30 min long (the same amount of time as my commute) and they put me in a great mood ready to tackle the day. This feels dreadfully cliche to say but every woman should read this book!
What set La La's book apart from the rest: La La mentions a lot of things that aren't new and will probably be familiar to you as well. What's different is obviously her personal story but also how she marries together the drive to be successful with the ability to be admired/respected/liked. She spends the majority of her time talking about integrity, earning respect, creating your brand (and how to reinvent your brand if you need to do that), as well as how to build others up and make others successful with you. Her story has a healthy dose of humility and La La emphasizes the importance of having a good heart and just being an overall good person throughout your success - that is what made me love La La's book and why it stands out from other similar books that I have read.
I was really hoping for more. I admire LaLa's hustle but I felt like this book read more like a diary in some chapters. How she would give insight and then completely change her mind set and or thought on the advice she was giving.
I admire her work ethic and her strive to focus on her brand and judge everything in comparison if it is good for her brand!
Lala wonderfully describes her power moves subtly laden in girl chat. It encourages and inspires without sounding braggy. Many key points to those that wish to listen and follow.
I had just finished another book with a similar theme and had been disappointed so I was prepared to abandon this book BUT it was good. Again I am at a different age than the author but her advice was pertinent. Although her world on radio, TV, and being married to a professional basketball player is so different, she presents information that is relatable. I appreciate her message of working hard and taking opportunities that present themselves to you. It was a good book to read in the new year.
Lala speaks on her journey to success from starting at an Atlanta Radio station to navigating her career all the way to Hollywood as a big time actor. Her journey and tips shared are very inspirational. Great read for young adults like myself who are trying to navigate with learning to network, displaying yourself and achieving your goals while staying committed to your brand.
A very good morale book. Perfect reminder from time to time, why we can be powerful and nice at the same time. Be nice to others, be nice to ourselves.
I like how La La keeps it real. I love the tone of this book - like a big sister sharing her wisdom and giving practical advice to empower me. My favorite part of the book would be her definition of power: 'Power is putting yourself in a position to maximize your gifts and your purpose and execute your goals and plans. Power is something developed from within. It's not about trying to control anyone but yourself. Power is the strength to face the things you may be afraid to do and then doing them anyway. Power is no regrets. Power is pushing forward. Power is making the tough choices in your life, and even if you fall or fail, having power allows you to get back up and try again. '
The chapter where she talked about self-worth and value has also helped me tremendously. Her emphasis on mastering one's craft and focusing on what is within our own control is a great personal reminder to me. (granted, I've read about these advice in other personal development books, but hearing it from La La, as she shared her personal experience, drills them into my head)
I also like Chapter Nine - Dress for Success, where she emphasized the importance of being thrifty when putting together a professional outfit. That just shows how humble and down to earth she is, not forgetting her roots and how she started out, despite being where she is today.
Overall, this will be a book I'm going to read from time to time (at least for now, as I am currently at square one trying to get back on track).
I've seen her TV show a few times and only recall one movie (Baggage Claim) that she was in and she seems like a sweet girl so I said "why not.". I was really impressed with the wisdom she was kicking.
Here are some quotes I like:
"Make sure you work your day job and maximize your opportunities there, constantly looking for ways to get a better position or more money."
"That fear prevents us from taking chances, stops us from believing we can make the leap to a new career or higher position, keeps us from acting with confidence in everything we do, bother personally and professionally. If we can conquer just that fear, many of us will see so many great things happen in our lives."
"So many guys play at adulthood."
"Everything you do in life is a lesson-even the mistakes."
"Those unpleasant moments with people are temporary. There are so many wonderful moments to focus on."
"If you 'fail' at something it could just be to prepare you for something else. It could be to change your course or path."
I didn't have any expectations when I decided to read this book. But I decided to read because I have always admired La La's personality, which seems so genuine. I loved how authentic La La came across, her down-to-earth personality makes her quite likeable. Though she didn't share a whole lot of things I didn't know before, I liked her perspective on a few things, from money, caring for others and being humble. Also, sharing her own experiences and life lessons which has helped her to grow, made her more relatable (she like everyone else has their share of struggles, but she showed how hard word and she pushing through fear and failure helped her to be who she is today). There are a few chapters which I really liked, which includes 'Power of Fear' and the'Power of Gratitude'.
Overall, it's an easy read with sound tips that everyone could use. Though I wish it had more depth and didn't seem a bit all over the place, it wasn't a bad attempt.
This was a great book worth listening to again and again. I love her concept of power not being power over others, but to have power in our own lives. The power to have options and to help others. Dig deep, work hard, be positive, and support others. The message is a good one, and her examples and anecdotes solidify the lessons.
I especially appreciated the section on branding because that is an area of my life where I am trying to do some work.
I had never heard of her before listening to this book. You can bet I'm going to be keeping an eye out for her now.
I liked how La La explained her successes and failures and how they brought her closer to honing her power. She talks about being positive, grateful, and persistent in what you want. It's great advice, and she hit on things I want to work on. I do these type of autobiographical success guides on audiobook to pick up on the voice, so that helps as well.
I thought that it was an amazing book. La La gave some very helpful tips about being independent and successful. All in all The Power Playbook: Independence, Money and Success was very inspiring and motivational.
Useful but also has a lot of common sense. May appeal to those looking to enter the entertainment industry. Not really relevant for women in other industries. She also kind of lost credit to me when she references Kim Kardashian
Great Book! Thank you Mrs. La La Anthony for sharing some of your power play tools with us! There is definitely a lot of great advice that you give throughout the entire book.
This is book that one could easily go back to again and again. It covers the basics and offers strong words of encouragement. It's one for the keeper shelf.
