Simple text with three easy to read stories in one book with bright illustrations and humorous interactions between the farmyard animals. Would be good for teaching prepositions to younger kids.
Fantastic beginning reader! Divided into three different "stories" these super simple tales get the stories across while teaching the meaning of the words IN, OVER, and ON.
Three short stories, told in comic book style, explore the meaning of prepositions through some humorous farm animals--with a couple lift-the-flaps for added fun! The stories are very simple, but I adore the illustrations, and my three year old has really enjoyed this one. It's one of the first books she has pretended to "read" by remembering all the lines! (Easy since it's short.) I imagine this would be a great, fun book for beginning readers, too.
My youngest is just learning to read and so I was looking for a book with some easy words and repittion that still captured his attention. He was able to read the book on his own (for the most part) and he loved the flaps and illustrations. We have read quite a few books by Ethan Long and are never disappointed.
A cute book that is split into 3 short stories. It is told in speech bubbles that remind me of Mo Willems’s style, this funny book will interest young children. There are flaps to lift to help further the story, and bright, bold illustrations. This one would be good for teaching concepts like in, out, on, off, and more.
This book is so cute for beginner readers that are still getting a hang of reading. The illustrations are clearly for the children. The end pages set a tone for the story as well as the book breaks pages up into double page spread and then some with boarders.

This easy-to-read book has few words and bright funny illustrations. Farm animals demonstrate through their entertaining actions what will help the young reader understand in, out, over, under, on, and off.
This is a very simple book introducing simple concepts. It would be good for both early readers and little children. And the illustrations are bold, bright, and simple.
Beginning reader. Teaches the concepts of in, over and on in a silly manner that young readers will enjoy. The animals explore the farm and get into some funny situations.
Teaching ideas - grammar - motor skills activities: over, in and on - playground game Educator POV - good book grades 1-3 - fun illustrations, attention grabber

I would have been inclined to shelve this in the Early Reader section, since it seems intended as more of a learn-to-read book than a lot of picture books.
Following his Geisel Award-winning Up, Tall and High, Long returns to prepositions. Four animals friends have adventures on the farm in this easy reader. Broken into three short stories, each story focuses on one pair of prepositions. Chicken can’t get in the coop, so she is left out in the rain, until she realizes that everyone else is warm and dry in there, so she orders them to get out. In the next story, Chicken can’t get over the fence or go under it either. Luckily Cow has another solution for her, go around! In the last story, Pig is on the tractor and Cow and Goat join him there. When they are all on the tractor though, it starts to roll away and soon they are all thrown off. But they want to go on it again.
Long is a very prolific author and excels at creating books for beginning readers which are a winning mix of humor and simplicity. It also helps that he is a natural storyteller and so his short stories in the book have the feel of being complete tales despite their brevity. His characters are also universal, in their group and individual dynamics. The book is entirely relatable by children and will be enjoyed in classrooms looking at prepositions as well as by individual readers.
Long’s illustrations are funny and filled with a cartoon appeal. The colors are candy-bright and even gray rainy days are tinged in lavender. The incorporation of a few flaps to lift is also very appealing for young readers who will enjoy that the twist for each story is revealed in a physical way.
Silly and very easy to read, these stories have massive appeal. Appropriate for ages 3-5.
Long, Ethan In, Over and On The Farm. PICTURE BOOK. G. P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers (Penguin), 2015. Language: G (no swears, no “F’s”); Mature content: G; Violence: G.
In, Over and On The Farm is a wonderful picture book that teaches children a lot about the world they live in. It is a great way to teach direction, location, and farm animals too!
My one year old giggles, points, and babbles with delight ever time we read this story together. He has picked the book up out of a big stack and handed it to me to read it to him on many occasions. It's his first choice at story time. He loves opening up the flaps and the simple language and illustrations keep his interest from the first page to the last. In, Over, and On The Farm is an instant classic that I'm sure my child and I will both love to read together for many years to come. A masterpiece of children's literature!
My six year old and I have read this over and over again while we had it out of the library. Obviously the 3 stories here each focus on a different set of prepositions (In/Out, Over/Under/Around, On/Off), they feel more like jokes than didactic!
Though the three 'stories' are simple and have few words-- they may even all be within the kindergarten or at least 1st grade Columbia Teacher's College sight word lists-- they are amusing. My son giggles every time. An average first-grader should be able to read these with ease; a younger child will enjoy being read the stories, turning the heavy-paper pages and opening the flaps for the denouement of each story. The round cartoonish drawing style is sure to please.
