When a chance internship in the Big Apple brings together two wounded souls, sparks fly — but so do the secrets.
Dillon Xander
I built my empire with blood, sweat, and an iron heart. Emotions? Buried long ago. Then she walked into my office, all ambition and beauty, tearing down walls I swore I’d never lower again. Every time she looks at me, I feel my control slipping, my heart thawing. And it terrifies me. Because the one thing I can’t afford to lose is my focus or her.
Azzaria Willis
This internship is supposed to be my final step to freedom, not a chance to fall for my brooding boss. I’ve got enough scars of my own, and I came here to prove I’m more than my past. Yet the way Dillon looks at me… it awakens feelings I thought I’d buried for good. The smart thing would be to stay away. But every glance, every brush of his hand makes me Could love really heal what’s broken inside us?

Jada is a 20-year-old book lover with a passion for all things book-related. She has an undeniable love for cinnamon rolls and Alfredo pasta—they’re her ultimate comfort foods! Along with caramel coffee, they make her happiest on even the busiest days. Her faith is a cornerstone of her life, and when she’s not reading or writing, you’ll probably catch her rewatching The Vampire Diaries or The Chosen. A hopeless romantic at heart, Jada is known for her warm, caring nature and her ability to make everyone around her feel special.
Thank you to Jada West for sending a copy of After hours in exchange for an honest review!
3.75 ⭐️ Firstly I want to just express how much I appreciate a slow burn trope because this wasn’t it. I think the romance was a little rushed which meant there was no chemistry between the characters in the beginning but that slowly changed and I couldn’t get enough of them! The story line was a little all over the place but got better towards the end of the book.
I feel like what was happening at 35% of the book should’ve happened at like 60% of the book.
I did really like the characters! Mara was my favourite she was just so sweet, relatable and loving. Azzaria was BOLD as hell and I loved it! She is bubbly, outgoing and the definition of “Girl Power!” Dillion was very plain and boring to me honestly, wasn’t feeling him.
I did really love the epilogue, it was so sweet and what a lovely way to end the book ☺️🩷
DNF @ 3% for me sadly. Couldn’t get past the writing style even though I wanted to love it so bad. It’s just not my fav. I’m also in the reading slump to trump all reading slumps so maybe I’ll come back to this later.
4.5⭐️ “She felt like home, and I didn’t even know I’d been searching for one.” ❤️ “Because that’s what you are to me. You’re not just someone I love being around, someone who lights up my days. You’re precious. Rare. Sacred. And I’ll spend the rest of my life making sure you know that.” ❤️ “You’re it for me. My only ever.” ❤️
Tropes Billionaire romance Black FMC Multilingual MMC CEO x His assistant He falls first Found family Protective, possessive, obsessed, morally grey MMC Emotional, traumatic pasts, therapy rep
It took me a few chapters to get into the story, after I finished, I went back to reread those first few chapters again and I can’t quite put my finger on what it was, but once I was in it. I was IN IT. I loved Dillon! The roses, the sweet notes, the words of affirmation, the reassurance, the acts of service, the grand gestures, the way he was constantly uplifting her, the protectiveness and possessiveness, the way he worshiped her, the way he was swiping that card for her (the library, the bakery, the studio, THE RING!), the way he was ready to burn the city down for her, the spiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. Jada West just knows how to write a MMC and that’s just that. I loved seeing Azzaria being loved and cherished the way she always should’ve been, seeing her regain her confidence and sense of self worth, and seeing her succeed as an architect. I also really liked the found family aspect. Dillon’s friends were great and were always there for him and it was cute how happy they were for him and Azzaria. I was surprised by and loved his mom’s redemption arc. That sweet moment between her and Azzaria at towards the end had me tearing up. Just because I loved to see the pos characters get dragged through the mud lol, I would’ve loved to have seen Camilla’s reaction to being removed from the project so she knew exactly why it was happening. I loved the way their story wrapped up. They are truly two people who were perfect for each other and made each other better.
Ahhh I have finally completed this book. And istg the amount of joy I'm feeling right now is insane. This book was amazing, and I had fun reading this book. The amount of I've for these two is unhinged. I love Azzaria so much. And Dillon, my boy, is just perfect. 🤌💕
My heart was aching for them and for whatever they both went through. ❤️🩹
This book is cute, sweet, funny and everything. The banter between them was amazing. I loved all the side characters so much. I'm so excited about other couples. 🦋
He is so whipped. He literally brought every book she recommended to him, and he read it all. 😭😭 And they had these cute reading dates going on every Sunday. Omg and he calls her "Precious" (I have a thing for cute nicknames).😭💕He writes a journal about her, every freaking day since the day he met her.🥹
Their pre-dates were quite endearing, and I loved them a lot. Dillon is the biggest softie for Azzy. 😭
And the Epilogue, it was everything and more. 🦋❤️🩹
The pacing in this book is just perfect —everything flows so well. The writing is super vivid and smooth and made it easy to get lost in the story. Azzy and Dillon’s banter? Absolutely adorable and so much fun. Plus, the mental health rep is on point. It’s clear the author did her research, and it really shines through🤎✨️ I can't wait read the others books in this serie 🤎
NOTE: IT IS NOT A SLOW BURN, MILDY FACE SPACED, SENSITIVE TOPICS.
What is admirable is that this a debut novel and it was written well. I read the first edition and gave that a 3 stars and she went back and redid a whole new book and WOW. This is SO much better. I love when young writers tap into their potential and I’ll be reading more stuff she writes in the future.
Let’s get into the review:
After Hours by Jada West is a gripping story of forbidden love and corporate intrigue. It's not a slow burn but rather medium fast-paced. I discovered it through a TikTok recommendation and give it a well-deserved 5-star rating.
The story follows the evolving relationship between a young intern and her billionaire boss. Jada skillfully shows the boss as not just wealthy and powerful, but also caring and attentive. This deep character development paves the way for a romance that surprises and captivates, highlighting an attraction that is both unexpected and inevitable.
The characters' vulnerable and passionate moments are beautifully depicted, creating a deeply touching connection. Jada introduces her characters skillfully from the start, establishing a solid foundation for the plot to unfold seamlessly. The story is filled with surprising twists and emotionally charged scenes that immerse the reader, showcasing her talent for crafting a compelling and resonant narrative. Furthermore, I loved the realism portrayed, addressing real-life issues such as jealousy, power struggles, dealing with trauma regardless of wealth, and seeking help when needed.
The spice was scorching hot, and it fit perfectly into the story. Dillon? He was everything. I fell for him from the very first page. Azzaria, well, she had to grow on me (understandably so, given all she went through).
I need Ronan to get his own book. I absolutely need it!
Her passionate writing not only enriches the core romance but also deeply engages readers, making After Hours a truly captivating read. It's remarkable that she, a talented young Jamaican author, has crafted such a noteworthy work. Her skill in weaving intricate narratives with cultural depth showcases her promise as a writer.
I highly recommend After Hours to romance enthusiasts looking for more than just a love story. It beautifully explores desire, power dynamics, and vulnerability, foreshadowing exciting future works from this talented author.
I don't know where to start with this masterpiece. Jada has truly blessed us with this book.
It starts pretty quick, but not *too* quick where you don't get to know the characters, if that makes sense? From there, we get to see all of what their love is and what it can be. We see their ups and downs, which is something i LOVE! Especially since it makes them feel more real, which might not make sense to most, but most billionaire love storys are hard to relate to for me, so its harder to digest, but Jada found the perfect way around this, making it perfect!
The spice too *chefs kiss*!! There's a perfect balance between passion and spice! Plus, there is definitely some things that you might want to try yourself
i absolutely loved this book! the way this book made me feel so much emotions. it was so heart wrenching, it made me sad and then the next made me happy. i truly loved the couple and other characters in the book. it’s a work place romance, he falls first and billionaire ceo! i really recommend! 😌
Usually I read books pretty fast but this one I took my time. I took my time because I wanted to enjoy every word and every page. I like how the attention stayed on the main characters, Azzaria and Dillon. Sometimes in books with so many background characters we lose focus on who the book is about but Jada West, you my friend gave us a balanced focus. I was able to learn about Azzarias life , past/present, and her people. Not only hers, but Dillon’s too. You took two different worlds and had them collide in a beautiful way. From the beginning to end, I grew with them. I learned, I fell, and I cried with them. And you also created a desire within me ( not talking about the steamy scenes) but desire as to what I want in life. What I want in love.
I do recommend this book to everyone. Thank you Jada West!
This book could give me cavities in every tooth it's so sickenly sweet. And not in a good way. It is just too much, over the top. And why is it so damn long. I'm barely got through 50% and feel like I'm been reading it ages. And I hate when authors try to make the fmc into a bookish girlie/readers and try to make a connection with the us (the actual readers) that way. It just gives cringe. like damn why are you trying so hard.
Although the plot wasn't bad (typical formulaic romance tropes), it really got on my nerves the author felt like she needed to italicize everything. Random words in the middle of a sentence, emphasis where it made no sense. You can't go more than 2 sentences without something in italics and it pulls you out of the narrative and does almost nothing to enhance the story.
It's a cute story with likable characters but it's poorly written.
“I painted this four months ago when you just started at the internship. You were all I could think about, even when I didn’t want to. I didn’t know the meaning at first, but as we progressed, I tied each element to a specific meaning. The golden sparkle in the middle of the heart is you. You’re my golden sparkle, the light in my world of darkness.”
LISTEN. EVERYONE LISTEN.
If you need a fun, fluffy, and real book, here it is. My mental health felt so safe with this book.
This was my first six-star read ever, and I will never miss a release from this author. This book was everything I didn’t know I wanted.
Dillon Xander. The man that YOU are. There are no words or even thoughts, but Dillon Xander.
I loved their chemistry, the spice, the plot—every aspect. I loved it ALL. The friends, the way he protected her, the writing style. I could picture every place vividly, as if I was there. I even found myself imagining the food! This is a debut work, and she’s NINETEEN. HELLO.
This is raw and real talent.
THAT AIRPLANE SCENE. THAT AIRPLANE SCENE. THAT KITCHEN SCENE. BUY ME A SANDWICH SHOP TOO.
This book was a hit. I loved how everything was written.
Azzy was incredible. She was strong, resilient, sassy, sparkly, and *saucy*. Her character was so well developed, and it’s the first time I’ve seen a book show how trauma truly affects someone in a relationship. Some might say she’s miserable and annoying, but her trauma was insane. Not to mention how Dillon did everything to make her feel safe.
My heart ached for my girl Azzy. And Jada, girl?? WHY THAT ENDING?
Thank you @authorjadawest for giving me an e-ARC to read and review 🫶
💌 My thoughts ~
After Hours is a masterful entry into the world of contemporary romance, seamlessly blending emotional depth with vibrant storytelling. From the first page, the narrative immerses the reader in a dynamic, fast-paced world brimming with passion, ambition, and vulnerability.
The writing style is captivating, marked by its rich, sensory details and sharp dialogue that brings the characters to life. Jada's ability to balance humor, heartache, and heat makes the story an absolute page-turner and her attention to pacing ensures that every scene—whether a high-stakes confrontation or a quiet moment of reflection—serves to deepen the connection between the characters and the reader.
The protagonists, Dillon Xander and Azzaria Willis, are beautifully complex. Dillon’s gruff exterior and hidden layers create a magnetic foil to Azzaria’s determined yet endearingly human vulnerability. Their chemistry crackles with authenticity, and their individual journeys of healing and self-discovery are as compelling as their blossoming romance.
The storyline extends beyond the central pair, offering a cast of secondary characters that enrich the world without detracting from the main arc.
After Hours is an emotional rollercoaster, striking the perfect balance between light-hearted moments and poignant themes. A love story with depth and grit, it is a must-read for fans of contemporary romance.
After Hours is an amazing love story and one of best debut book I have read in 2024
I used to give this amazing book previous version 4.75 🌟 because some dialogue in story is not make sense and a little bit unnecessary. But the new version of the book checks every box of all my criteria for a 5 🌟 book: amazing cast of characters, intruiging story line, Spicy and Swoony and no need to some nonsense drama to make the book interesting.
After Hours definitely is a must read debut romance, Highly recommend !!!
My heart! this story was really beautiful and touching. I especially connected with Azzy's character and felt like I could really relate to her. It was great to see Dillon's character develop from being grumpy to falling in love with her. I couldn't stop reading because I was so invested in their story. I also appreciate that the book delves into real-life struggles and raises awareness about important issues. Jada did an amazing job with the writing, and the spicy scenes were on point. I can't wait to read more of her books in the future.
Sorry but DNF the book around 60% I could not take it anymore. It is really boring, no plot and the writing style is kinda cringe 😬 . Besides this book is unnecessary long :/
After Hours by Jada West is a whirlwind of emotions, romance, and personal growth that grips you from the first page. This workplace romance centers on the evolving relationship between Azzaria, a young intern, and Dillon, her billionaire boss, and it’s filled with moments that are sweet, funny, and emotionally intense. The banter between the two is electric, with Dillon going all in—reading every book Azzaria recommends, even documenting their love in a daily journal since the day they met. Their chemistry is undeniable, and their pre-date reading sessions on Sundays are just too cute, especially with Dillon affectionately calling her “Precious.”
The character development is one of the book’s standout features. Dillon starts as a grumpy, powerful CEO, but watching him fall head over heels for Azzaria is incredibly heartwarming. His vulnerability and devotion to her make him one of the most endearing romantic leads. Azzaria, on the other hand, has a deeply moving backstory that makes her growth and eventual trust in Dillon feel earned and emotionally resonant. Together, their journey is captivating, tugging at your heartstrings as they navigate both the highs and lows of their romance.
Jada West’s writing shines in her portrayal of the main couple and the surrounding characters, who are so well-crafted that you can’t help but hope for their own stories in future books. The balance between corporate intrigue, romance, and real-life struggles like trauma and vulnerability gives After Hours a depth that elevates it beyond a typical love story. This debut novel is a must-read filled with passion, surprising twists, and a deeply satisfying epilogue. I can’t recommend it enough, and I eagerly anticipate more from this talented young author.
This book is out now, and I would highly recommend reading this!!!
Raw - that’s how this book made me feel. I felt exposed in the best way possible because I felt seen and heard. This book indirectly related to me and I couldn’t be happier because Azzaria and her mum went through soo much pain in their life, and as a result it affected how they viewed the world and treated people around them.
Mara and Abigail, as well as all of Dillon’s friends were all such wonderful souls, minus Halle. They all rallied around them both when needed and it made my heart full to see what genuine friendship looked like from people who only have your best interest at heart.
The way this book was written was very empowering and eye opening. Azzaria and Dillion had an unbreakable love and as the book progressed you could only see it grow. In some aspects I thought this was cute, and could only dream of having such adoration and obsession, even if it’s a tenth.
The only thing that I didn’t like was how Ms, Leann chose to deal with her situation because not being able to say bye is really heartbreaking. Especially knowing that Dillion knew and instead of insisting she spent more time with her mum he said nothing, and carried on as normal. However, it was beautiful to see that Azzaria had love and support throughout her grieving. As well as, Dillion’s mum making a turn for the best and doing right by her children and herself.
Overall, this book was very heartfelt and beautiful and I loved to see how various topics were included in the book like trauma, therapy, love and even death. The spice was rather mild and repetitive but the book was based on a much deeper connection. The author has a great way with words and all the high ratings given for this book are all well deserved.
Check Trigger/Content Warnings ⚠️ I ACTUALLY Give this 10/10 STARS 5/5 Spice
This story was beautiful. These characters Azzaria & Dillon are a match made in heaven. They meet while working together with her as his assistant and him as the billionaire boss but what I LOVE is that while Dillon may come off a a tough and powerful Alpha Billionaire Boss business man with Azzaria you get to see the most beautiful side of him, he shows her truly that he's a man with feelings and Arias beautiful heart & mind, one who takes her feelings into consideration does all kinds of little things along with big things to show her how much he cares about her and how much she means to him and she does the same for him as well but for me the way Dillon does things is more special because in a society where men are told not to show their feelings it's sweet to see the things he does especially the little things even if this is a book it just makes you love guy. Both Dillon and Azzaria have past traumas that they had to deal with and they learn that with each other they can truly come together and help one another finally heal those traumas. I loved the writing of the story, the attention to detail of the characters, the way places were described to take me into the book. 💥I also love how Jada (The Author) also gave some extra Pre Chapter Warnings to let you know that a chapter was going to be heavy and mention some mental health issues to give the reader a reminder which i think was great to see in a book. If you love a beautiful love story then definitely give this book a read, it won't disappoint.💥
Not typically a romance reader, but the 5⭐'s is because this a romance book that gives the reader what they want, but also shows them a few things they didn't even know they needed. Genre-savvy readers probably know what to expect with Romancing the Billionaire. Exotic settings, fancy accouterments. Then, you've got workplace will they/won't they happening. Forced proximity never felt so good. But then, with just a pinch of mob-boss energy, male lead Dylan isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty if it means protecting his love. As they get closer, they unravel each other's traumas, and learn to support each other through everything from petty jealousies to life-altering tragedies. Meanwhile, female lead Azzaria doesn't have just one major hurdle, but numerous little ones. Personal, family, scholastic, professional, romantic, they all swirl around, accurately portraying real life. All the side characters are entwined in each others business, lending a cozy small town air to the big bustling city that I found welcome. Oh, and the spice. It's ahh-SPicy! Careful not to get burned. Highly recommended for anyone looking to escape into a world where love conquers all, even the most unexpected challenges
I was beyond excited to dive into this book, and it exceeded all my expectations! This ARC was a rollercoaster of emotions, and I loved every second of it.
Dillon Xander and Azzaria Willis are a match made in office romance heaven. Dillon’s meticulous and guarded nature perfectly complements Azzaria’s spirited and resilient personality. Their chemistry is off the charts, and the way their relationship unfolds is both intense and heartwarming.💗
The corporate setting adds a unique twist to their love story, making every interaction between Dillon and Azzaria feel charged with tension and passion. Jada does an incredible job of balancing the high-stakes business world with the tender, emotional moments that make this book so special.
What really stood out to me was how Dillon and Azzaria navigate their personal scars and find strength in each other. It’s a beautiful reminder that love can heal and transform.
If you’re a fan of steamy office romances with depth and heart, “After Hours” is a must-read. Jada West has crafted a story that will stay with you long after you turn the last page. I can’t wait to see what she writes next! So proud of you My Love🩷🩷
I really wanted to love this more and there were certain parts that I did enjoy however there was 3 problems I had with this book
1 was the characters just seemed to be so against anything together and then a page letter going at it? It seemed a bit rushed and not pieces together well, there was a little of that through the book with maybe another round of editing helping things flow better
2 the random murdering?! It’s common in Mafia romance and you expect it cause you know? mafia! But in everyday people just murdering seemed a little out of place, he had no inclination to it and then suddenly he has a whole building to torture and murder? Like huh
3 and probably the biggest, was the trigger warnings before each chapter, this might be an each to their own but it pulled me out from reading every time and made me quite irritated. The trigger warnings before the book sure, but again at each chapter was just too much for me! Also seemed a bit loose on ‘trigger warnings’ some of those topics would be very very common in media.
Overall there was some strong points and the writing made me like the character so I’ll read book 2 for sure
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Azzaria is a survivor. She’s extremely intelligent, knows her worth and loves to be around people who love her. She’s a FMC that sooooo many people can relate to. Her experiences are real, her emotions are valid, her responses are human. I have no complaints.
Dillon slowly starts to pay attention to Azzaria romantically and then is hooked. He is obsessed!!! Not in a creepy way, but he genuinely takes what Azzaria’s wants and needs to reality. He’s head strong but has his own weaknesses. To control his emotions, he journals or paints. Just someone you want to live the rest of your life with.
The two are adorable and I appreciate the storytelling. Everything flowed well.
My only gripe is (being a business major and working in corporate America) the way no one said anything about an intern and CEO getting together??? Maybe I missed it, but that breaks so many business ethics rules. I mean look at what happened to the CEO of Astronomer from the Coldplay concert.
Besides that, I really enjoyed this story and ready for book 2
This book is a calm, fluffy, workplace romance book to take you out of a reading slump...if you were in one that is, cuz ha! i was surely deep in one. Azzaria is a confident yet shy, cute yet sassy FMC and i love her! From her brilliance and innovativity to her determination and humility. She struggled to love herself due to her past and watching her heal and overcome that moved something in me. Dillon...DADDY DILLONNNNNN!!! He is the definition of what a man should be with being a cold, smart, billionaire as a bonus. How he shows up, loves, comforts and cares for Azzaria was admirable. This man said "Im the man, you shouldn't even know what a bill looks like" I SCREAMED BCZ YES! YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! PROVIDEEEEE. I could rant on and on about how much i love Dillon and how he spoils her but most of all, how he is there for her through everythinhg. Her highs, her lows, everything. This MMC was not written out of pure fiction but what a real man is supposed to do and be for his woman and I. LOVED. THAT. Hands down an amazing romance novel! Can't wait to dive into book 2.
To say I enjoyed this book would be an understatement!
The pace of everything does my brain great, we see the ups and downs, the spice and everything in between. I will say, with millionaire/billionaire romances, there’s a point where I’m like “okay we get ittt.. you have money” but I didn’t feel that during the book. I enjoyed seeing a black FMC be spoiled, without it being used against her.
He LOVES her and it’s very well known. From the nut ban in the office to him making her little safe haven with the library, workspace AND bakery.
The side characters are also my favorite, I enjoy a found family - on screen type of friendship and you really see that throughout the book.
I’m definitely excited for the second book in the series.
3.75 stars Jada West is a very well-written author which honestly surprised me as this is her first published book. It's hard to come across authors that can write well, especially straight off the bat. She's created a world that immerses you from the get-go, with deep characters that have a trauma and history, helping each other through their grief and internal battles. I felt like the conversation at the beginning was a bit forced, but as the book progressed, so did the dialogue. You just fall in love with the characters, their development throughout being perfectly communicated, and the overall world she has created. I'm excited to see what she has planned for the future.
