Born a humble girl in what is now Albania, Agnes Bojaxhiu lived a charitable life. She pledged herself to a religious order at the age of 18 and chose the name Sister Teresa, after the patron saint of missionaries. While teaching in India, where famine and violence had devastated the poor, Teresa shed her habit and walked the streets of Calcutta tending to the needs of the destitute. Who Was ...? biography series for middle grade brings incredible woman – Mother Teresa, a Roman Catholic religious sister who tended to the poor of India and became the beloved missionary by millions.

Agnes Bojaxhiu was born on August 26, 1910 in Skopje, now capital of Macedonia, north of Greece. The family was Albanian. She grew up in atmosphere where father told stories from his travels at a table where other people sat; people that Agnes didn’t know. Later, she discovered they were the poorest people in Skopje. Agnes learned early on to help the needy.

At Sacred Heart, Agnes helped the priests, and that’s where she learned about Catholic Missions. She loved the stories of people traveling to faraway places to help people in need.

At eighteen, she made up her mind to become a missionary nun. She received her mother’s support, but her brother Lazar, military officer, wasn’t as understanding. He claimed – how could she give up everything.

Agnes responded, “Lazar, you say that you are important because you are an officer serving the king of two million people. But I am serving the King of the whole world!”

Agnes was accepted to Loreto Order in Calcutta, India. When she took her first vows, she became Sister Teresa, known for simplicity and practicality.

For the next sixteen years, she taught the girls at St. Mary’s. Then, she took over the Mother Superior’s duties and became Mother Teresa.

She loved teaching but Loreto was a place of cloistered nuns, and she knew what was going on outside the convent walls. Then, she heard her next calling to live and work among the poor.

After receiving permission from the Catholic Church, in 1948, she walked out of Loreto Convent into the slums of Motijhil. Then, more nuns followed in her footsteps.

While helping the poor, she encountered many obstacles but she refused to take no for an answer. The word about her work spread outside India.

She received many awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. It was for her work “in bringing help to suffering humanity.”

She worked until her last days. She said, “She had all eternity to rest.” She died at the age of eighty-seven.

She was an ordinary woman who with her great love and compassion for another human being she became an extraordinary saint.

This biography is a touching and tear-dropping story of an incredible woman who never sought fame. Instead, others started seeking her story due to her charitable work.

This illustrated biography series for young readers, ages 8-12, is presented in a relatable way, with simple sentences and enriched with insightful inserts.

Mother Teresa or Agnes Bojaxhiu was born on 26th August, 1910 in the city of Skopje, Macedonia. Agnes' father and mother were Nikola and Drana. She had 3 siblings and was the youngest. The eldest was a sister named Age. She had a brother named Lazar.

Nikola Was an important person in their city. Their family was well known for helping the poor with their wealth. They were christians.Catholic christians to be exact. Agnes first attended school Sacred Heart. She took her studies seriously. Her father died when she was 8.

Drana started an embroidery business. She made enough money. They attend church everyday. When she was 12 , Agnes decided to serve others. Her mother thought she was too young. She began teaching Sunday School for kids.

When she was 18, she became a missionary nun and left for Yugoslavia. That was the last time she saw her mother and sister. She met another woman joining the Loreto order ( India ) and went to meet the Mother Superior in Paris.

India was under the British Raj at that time and she had to learn English. She went to Dublin for training for 6 weeks. They finally landed in Mumbai. She went to Chennnai and from there to Kolkata. She then went to Darjeeling. She went there to continue preparing for becoming a nun. She studied Hindi , Bengali and English for 2 years there. She took her first vow as nun in 1931. She took her name as Sister Teresa after a French Saint. She went to Kolkata to start teaching in a school called St Mary’s. She took her final vows as a nun in 1937.

In 1944, she became the headmistress of the
school. She was known as Mother Tereasa from then. In 1943, a famine befell West bengal. At this time India was fighting for its freedom. Once a week, the schoolgirls in Kolkata visited the slum outside and the city and helped everyone.

In 1946 , A bloody battle broke out between muslims and Hindus. 5000 people were killed. It was impossible to get food. Mother Teresa walked for days in search of food and finally the British soldiers gave the school food. When she went on her annual retreat she decided to move out of the school and help the poor.
She asked a local priest for help. She had to ask permission from the Pope. It took them two years to let her do that and she had to do it on a 1 - year trial basis.

She wore a saree to go out on her first day. She began teaching. She found a place to sleep by knocking on the door of a Roman Catholic Organization. By the end of a month 20 kids were attending each day. She started passing out bars of soap to maintain hygiene in the area

.She soon became popular.Former students started joining her. Together they started the Missionaries of Charity. They got a place in a person’s house. When the Pope came to visit he was so impressed that he gave Mother Teresa a car. She started a home for the dying. She helped people come in peace with the fact that they are dying. She opened a clinic for people with leprosy.

The Missionaries of Charity soon went Global. Mother Teresa got the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. In 1997, Mother Teresa died. She was beatified in 2003 and declared a saint in 2016.

An amazing book about an amazing person!

The book “Who was Mother Teresa” explains us about the life of Mother Teresa. Her real name was Agnes Bojaxhiu. Her family had always helped the needy and this trait had found its way to Mother Teresa. She realized her vocation towards the poor and chose to be a missionary nun. She studied English so that she could communicate in India. She began teaching, but as she had come to help the poor, she left with a heavy heart. She wore a sari and went to the slums of Motijhil, where the poorest of the poor lived, to live with them and help them. She started teaching the children in the slums by drawing the Bengali alphabet in the dirt. She built schools throughout the world! She even built a place for the dying. Mother Teresa won a nobel prize. Unfortunately, she died on September 5,1997 ageing 87. The life of Mother Teresa was a tough one, but she was an example to several others to help the poor.

Who was mother Teresa is a very enriching book. It gives us a brief view of mother Teresa's long life.
She was a true saint! This book shows us that saints weren't people who lived hundreds of years ago. There are true saints amongst us! Mother Teresa's real name was Agnes Bojaxhui. She was born in Skopje On 26th August 1910. She helped the poor, the sick, the dying irrespective of their religion. She gave up a perfect life to help the poor. Even when she was a small girl she gave poor people food shelter and other necessities. She moved to Calcutta and was horrified by the sight of so many people injured and dying. It was at this point that she decided to leave her society and help the poor. She thought this was a message from god. Her society still continues and she was one of the most memorable people to ever live. I recommend that everybody read this book.
Thank you.

Mother Teresa is famous worldwide for her charitable acts and deeds of kindness. But did you how she realized that she needed to help the poor lead a better life? Or the hardships she and her familly faced when she was a child? This book is here to tell you everything about her life from the start to the ending in a simple and easy to read way. It also has the meaning of different terms throughout the book so you'll understand. There are many things you can learn from this book and it is a knowledgeable book for children and adults alike that urges them to take little steps to help everyone and respect them regardless of gender, religion or wok as we are all children of god. “Charity isn't about pity, it is about love,”
-Mother Teresa

This book was a pretty short read, and the narration kept me hooked. Today was the last day of school, so I was feeling a little down, but after finishing this, I somehow started 'buzzing' again. So I guess the book has to be good, right?

(If you haven't already guessed, I don't really know how to review this book)

My rating: 4 stars,
4 stars for the narration.

Book 353!

This is the last book I read in 6th grade, I promise!

Influenced by the great works of Mother Teresa, Jim Gigliotti wrote an extravagant biography Who Was Mother Teresa? This biography takes place throughout the 1900s in many different countries all around Europe displaying affection to the ones of the less fortunate. The story starts with Anges (Mother Teresa) being born into and growing up in Skopje with her mom, dad, sister, and brother. Anges’s dad dies, which leads to her wanting to take her dad’s duties in the community. One day at the Lady of Lettuce, “she became certain he kept asking her to serve others.” Agnes heard God calling her to serve others, so she started doing anything she could, including teaching Sunday school to children.
Agnes surely only wants to help people as much as she can, so she decides to become a nun and moves to Dublin, Ireland to go to a nun school. While she attended nun school, Mother Superior became ill, so Mother Teresa took over her role. Mother Teresa still wanted to help out more and work in the slums, but “Mother Teresa needed permission from the head of the Catholic church.” After a year of waiting, she finally got permission to work among the poor people. Mother Teresa began helping younger kids with the alphabet and adults with living conditions. Eventually, she established the Shanti Nagar, which remained a home for the sick. Mother Teresa died from malaria and pneumonia at the age of eighty-seven.
This biography forms an important message throughout the book of helping the less fortunate. Gigliotti expresses the importance of this message in Who Was Mother Teresa? For students who enjoy learning about history and people who made a big impact, this book exists for them.

'Who was Mother Teresa?' is a really inspiring book written by Jim Gigliotti. Mother Teresa truly was a form of God. She helped the poor and the needy, gave love to the unloved and gave hope to the ones with no hope. Even though she faced many difficult situations where she had make the most difficult descisions, she didn't stop her work. Mother Teresa was a 'blessed' missionary and loved by millions of people. She was an amazing woman.

The book Who Was Mother Teresa is a story about a young girl named Agnes. Agnes came from a family of five. When Agnes got older and was eighteen, she decided to become a nun. When she became a nun, that is when she changed her name to be sister Teresa and soon her name became to be Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa was very humble. She enjoyed helping people out. A connection I have with Mother Teresa is, I also enjoy helping people. A theme I have for this story is, no matter how people act and look, that does not mean you can't help anyone. I recommend this book to 5th-7th grade students.

Did you know that Teresa was not her real name?
Did you know that she became one of the most famous and inspiring humanitarians in the world?
DId you know that she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work?
Did you know that despite others' views, she strove to help the weak, destitute and dying?
Did you know that she spoke 4 languages?
Did you know that she supported anyone in need, regardless of their religious beliefs?
The motto she seems to carry throughout this bio is "Give LOVE to ALL for we ALL are deserving of LOVE"

The book answers all of these questions and more. Enjoy.

The book doesn't shy away from the religious upbringing or views on religion, but it never picks sides, just states facts. The reason I liked it is because of what a woman who already had nothing gave everything she was for what she believed in. She also and this is stressed multiple times throughout the book (another reason I like it), that she cared more about comforting others than she did about CONVERTING them.

Mother Teresa was a inspiration to many people and saw Jesus in the face of the people she helped. Now how cool is that. She came across many hard decisions and dealt with them and with each loss she became stronger. The world would be a better place if there would be more people like her. Mother Teresa help many sick and die people with sicknesses that she could get and mothers so still not afraid of the possibilities that could happen to her and the people around her. She gave hope to those who she helped even though she criticized for what she was doing. She started great things that should never end in hope of helping yet one more person. Mothers Teresa help people see God in a knew way.

What an incredible human. Loved learning about her up-bringing and how her family taught her to take in the poor and help others. Devastating she lost her father at 8, and the Albanian government refused to let her dying mother and sister come to India, and said they may not let her return to India if she went there. I can't imagine saying good-bye to my mother and family at age 18 and living as long as she did and never seeing them again. I love the image of her physically carrying the poor. I also love that she wouldn't take no for an answer and that she didn't push her religion on others but focused on love. "The best conversion is to make the people love one another....When they love one another, they come closer to God." Love this lady!

I question this choice for the “Who Was” series. She was controversial enough for the author to spend a few pages defending her from the charges. That is not what this book series should be about. The charges should have been presented with pros and cons of the issues. That would have shown kids how to properly determine innocence or guilt, something our youth badly needs to learn! Finland teaches their children this in connection with the internet.

I do feel her life was adequately explored. Mahatma Gandhi would have been a better choice if they were looking for someone to represent India. Not recommended.

Who was Mother Teresa by Jim Gigliotti was an okay book. I liked how she helped so many kids in India with food and water. If anyone was injured in India, Mother Teresa would help them by supplying clean water.

Mother Teresa was a nun who liked to help people in India. Mother Teresa was a nice, loving person with a big heart who loved to help people. Mother Teresa moved to India to become a nun and help the poor so they die peacefully. Mother Teresa became known as Blessed Mother Teresa because she helped cure a woman with cancer.

I recommend this book to people that want to learn more about Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa is one of my "Heroes of the Week" and I read this book out loud to the class. They did not like it as much as I did. Lol. They were much more intrigued when I read then "Who was Blackbeard?"

I really admire Mother Teresa. She gave her whole life to serving others and caring for the downtrodden. The part that really stuck out to me was her using a stick and teaching the children in the dirt, because there was no place for a school. I don't agree with all of her religious points, but I admire anyone who serves others.
