Due in no small part to Sebastian, his uncommon butler, Earl Ciel Phantomhive finally succeeds in earning an audience with the enigmatic headmaster of Weston College following the outcome of the annual cricket tourney. As moon-pale petals bloom on the lapels of the students who have been granted a place at the Midnight Tea Party, the man who holds all authority at the school reveals himself to his guests. Will his appearance shed light on the fate of the students who have gone missing, or will the mysteries continue to pile up within these hallowed school grounds?

This was so full of awwwww scenes. Ciel is really so cute when he put his mind to it, and it is really sweet to see him like a boy his age. It is just the cutest thing ever! Plotwise we're nearing the end of this school story and even if I am quite happy to see how the things are ending I am a tad sad to have to say goodbye to this setting. I loved it!
First off, I thank my friend, for lending me volumes 3-17. Without her, it may have taken me years to find each volume to satisfy my obsession with Sebastian and Ciel Phantomhive. After seeing 3 seasons of the Anime, I really looked forward to reading the manga.
There are several reasons I read this series. One, of course, is that I really liked the characters. Most of the characters were well drawn out, with individual quirks and mannerisms. Only a few of the background characters came out a little flat and bland.
The artwork, as I brought up in some of my previous reviews, was exquisite, down to some tiny details that flavored the humor and the horror.
The majority of the various story arcs that ran through the 17 volumes were interesting. The background stories of the characters were intriguing and it was fun to see those stories interspersed throughout each story arc.
One of the other reasons, I read through the series was more from a writer's point of view. This is a very popular series, and fans (including me) *love* the Earl of Phantomhive, his Butler Sebastian, and a few of the other side characters. On the surface, these characters are not really nice. The Earl of Phantomhive is bent on revenge for what was done to his family, his family's name, and to him. Sebastian Michaelis is a Demon turned Butler for the Earl, for the sole purpose of cultivating the boy's soul to devour when the boy dies. Yet, we fans cheer them on, looking forward to seeing them conquer all odds -- and that sentiment also includes the grim reapers and a few other characters.
This ability to turn characters, that would normally be considered the antagonists, in a story, into the protagonist is a notable skill. Toboso has created a morose child that the fans hope will obtain his vengeance. The author has created a Demon Butler that fans wish was their butler, even though the cost is rather high. The author has found a way to give enough positive characteristics to what would be normally unlikable characters, to cause readers to feel empathy and to care about these characters -- and has been able to do so in comic book form.
Second Reading 2015-09-23
I don't think I can add any more to this review than what I've written last year. I've re-read this in preparation to reading volumes 18, 19, and 20 -- and because I *love* Sebby's and Ciel's world!
I'm just gonna pretend I didn't skim through pages and pages of boring ass cricket ! I like Ciel was smart with it and had various strategies but also idgaf.😭
Finally the last chapter we were cooking, with everything finally coming together and being revealed. I like that it connects directly to the last arc and the villain that got away.
Also that villain is hot I'm sorry, their design goes so hard.
I think the whole Public School Arc is my favorite. Those past few panels made me appreciate the art style to a new level 😈 (though they’re all crisp either way).
My liking towards Undertaker is slowly dying down. His whole character design makes me wanna breakdance and never stop, but right now 😕 you do you bozo.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Estoy emocionada
You may not like it, but this is what peak dark academia looks like.
Mostly JK, but I do find it funny that the cricket arc really hit my personal favorite dark academia beats. I've clearly been into this genre much longer than I thought....
3.5 rounded up because what started as a really strange boys dorm arc is turning into a good payoff for other interactions between Ciel and mysterious characters.
Ahh the blue sapphires did it! With the help of Sebastian of course and now Ciel can go to the midnight tea part. We meet the headmaster at last at then end of this volume and some very disturbing twists as well. Everything from the Book of Atlantic arc and oneward is connected by that central plot. Which has heightened my interest in Undertaker, who is he really? I hope we will find out in the future volumes.
Despite not being the biggest fan of the school arc, the second half of this was still really good. The intrigue has got me itching to pick up the next one.
I just love this series. It’s just plain enjoyable, no matter what’s happening. And the twists are just lovely.
Most of this volume contained the rest of the cricket arch. I will say I’m glad the game is over, because I’m not a sports person, but it was still an enjoyable arch to read, even if I still have no idea how the game really works. The bonus chapter at the end, where Toboso talks about her researching cricket, was also very entertaining, though.
During the reprieve from cricket, and the celebration, though, I had to admire the artwork. Toboso does perfect stills like perfect actual pictures. Capturing the moment someone falls or laughs or dances. There were a couple pages of this, and they were just really pretty.
Then we get to a big momentous reveal in the case of the missing boys. It ends up being the continuation (or spin-off, maybe) of an earlier case, which I wasn’t expecting. I don’t know why, but I thought we were moving onto something completely new--not that I'm disappointed.
Still, the cliffhanger was rather exciting. I’m still not sure what’s going on (and while Sebastian seems to know, I don’t think Ciel does), but I definitely look forward to seeing how it wraps up in the next volume (assuming it doesn’t continue into the one after that). And I like the character that showed up, although I’m wary of what he brings.
Thank you to my Good Reads friend Yvensong for encouraging me to read my first manga. Black Butler 1-17 is an engrossing, FUN, intriguing, beautifully drawn reading experience, one I will LONG remember.
For a superb review, I highly recommend Yvensong's G/R review here:
In previous books, several of Yana Toboso's drawings of Sebastian made me laugh -- Sebastian evesdropping on conversation, while hanging upside down on a high indoor window ledge unobserved, or his stunning acrobatic moves in action scenes.
In Book 17, Yana's AMAZING drawing of Sebastian secretly following the elusive Headmaster up sets of winding staircases. Yana draws Sebastian leaping upwards into the air to the very top of the stairs, then throwing himself off the top of the stairs, upside down and backwards (!) to snatch the Headmaster. Bravo, Yana!
I got a big kick out of Sebastian's unfailingly polite actions, and sometimes tenderness, shown in dealing with Ciel, who can be a rude, demanding or derisive 12 year old. I love Sebastian's perfect butler manners, while we the readers get to see Sebastian's snarky internal thoughts ;-)
Now I will re-contact the librarian about my request for book purchases for #18 and #19 (rel. date 1/20/15).
Yay! Things are looking up again, definitely gearing up for a grand finale of this boarding school story. While I don't totally understand Cricket, I loved watching all their cool strategies for winning the game. The girls were my favorite. :) watching them celebrate after winning was cute to. soma dancing with May Rinn! XD. The ending was quite dramatic to, with the discovery of what happened to the missing students. (Finally) it gives as a little info, but not the whole story, leaving plenty cliffhanger room to make the reader want the nex volume. :) it also ties back to the ship & zombies story arch. :) very glad it did, and did just forget about past adventures. I've seen some mangas do that, & I hate it.
I also loved seeing Ciel & Sebastian & the rest of the nerdy blue house preparing for the big game. I feel like little Ciel kinda came out of his Shell here & really enjoyed the torment. It was a game & he loves those, so it definitely helped. But I think he liked working with the other students. Even though he'll probably never admit it. :D
Liked this volume much more then the last couple thanks to s bit more action & creepiness & a cute Ciel & Sebastian scene. :) & a very good ending chapter. :)
"Black butler" is a great pick for fantasy lovers.
This was a good volume in the Black Butler series. This book continues the storyline started a few books ago where Ciel and Sebastian are under cover at a Boys School where students have been disappearing. While this hasn’t been my favorite storyline it has been well done and I am still enjoying it.
As with previous volumes the illustration is top notch and I am really enjoying it.
The first half of the manga deals with the cricket match. I honestly found this to be a bit boring, but some of it was funny. The rest of the book builds to the unveiling of who the Headmaster is and it is quite the unveiling.
Overall this was a decent continuation of the Black Butler series. Most of this book deals with the cricket match, which wasn’t all that entertaining to me. However, the Midnight Tea Party and the unveiling of the Headmaster was quite good. I would recommend this manga series to those who enjoy paranormal manga with a good dash of mystery.
Oh man I totally loved this volume starting from Edward's banal skills that made him respect the ones that they have talent . I totally respect him more after this volume. I loved that the Blue team won and especially Ciel, even if he is trying to win by cheating he really has a charm to him especially in the moment when I realized that he still worked hard . In a way he and Edward are the same, not talented but hard working characters that do not stop just because the people near them get to make things easier, they are ambitious and they try harder to become better....
Don't be fooled by the official synopsis. A good chunk of this volume—about half of it, really—is dedicated to the end of the cricket tourney. It's a ridiculous, farcical take on the English sport but it's so darn Kuroshitsuji I can forgive it. The whole book is very Yana Toboso, from the elaborate outfits to the unexpected plot twists and the cameos from favorite characters, and it pushes us through into the final act of the Weston College mystery arc.
My complete review of BLACK BUTLER volume 17 is at my blog.
Few thoughts: -Edward is becoming one of my favorite characters ❤️ -The 4 houses are clearly inspired by Hogwarts (with whatever Ilvermorny house Queenie went to subbing for Hufflepuff) and I spent the longest time confused at why Ciel would be in the Ravenclaw equivalent instead of the Slytherin equivalent, until [SPOILER] [SPOILER] [SPOILER] like a good little Slytherin he out-Ravenclawed the Ravenclaws and out-Gryffindored the Gryffindors in one fell swoop [SPOILER][SPOILER] [SPOILER] -While I did have an inkling about who the big bad would be, the last issue really did surprise me and I can't wait to know the whole story in the next volume.
Amé este tomo!!!!! Y de principio a fin... No sé cómo explicar en palabras todo lo que me transmiten los hermosos dibujos de Yana Toboso. La verdad mis respetos, tiene una forma de hacerlo que me encanta. Undertaker......
Black Butler really just turned into a sports manga for a couple volumes. Love that it's a sport I actually understand for once lol. These last two volumes were kind of filler tbh but still enjoyed it. Also, since this is a re-read I already knew who the headmaster was, so not really a surprise.
