Fifty years ago, the world burned down. The few survivors were saved by a man named Evander. He created the New World, a safe sanctuary where they could rebuild society.
Inez Aarden has lived in the New World her entire life. While she’s curious about the outside of their fenced-off town, she’s content with her life of hanging out with her best friend and meeting up with her secret girlfriend.
All of that changes when she wakes up in a burned down city surrounded by thirty other kids. Evander has brought them all there for a very specific reason; the New World is expanding, and the kid that survives the longest will become the president of the next town.
As Inez forms alliances and fights to survive, she realizes that all the kids have one important thing in common. Is it a coincidence, or has the president been lying to them? Why are they really here?
this book was absolutely amazing i was waiting for awful things to happen, last summer destroyed me-so i prepared myself going into this novel. i knew the meaning of the title from the beginning which actually surprised me. i fell in love with the characters from the very beginning, i felt each loss and felt as if i was in the school with everyone. the ending was tragic until i made it to the last page and was brought hope. last summer is one of my favorite novels and now this beautiful one is too.

I knew from the very first chapter that I was going to love this book. I instantly was in awe of the writing, the imagery and the main character. But I couldn’t predict how deeply I’d fall in love with it or how much it would break my heart or the way it made me stay up all night reading it, despite how tired I was. I was not prepared to have my breath taken away the way it was or feel like I knew the characters as well as I did. Every page I turned with a racing heart was lined with characters that will break your heart, incredible writing, and a story you will never forget. I knew I was going to love this book, but I did not predict this to be a book that I know I will always remember; I was not prepared for this to be my new favourite book.
