Torn between conflicting worlds—one light, one dark—two lovers plunge into the ultimate battle between good and evil in a thrilling romantasy by a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author.
I was born to hunt the evils hiding in this world. To slay and destroy.
My purpose was never supposed to be her. My forbidden soulmate. Protecting her was meant to be temporary—I’d stay close until I was certain she was safe, and then I would walk away.
I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with her, and I sure as hell wasn’t supposed to take her to my bed. I’d heard my entire life that touching her would only bring us to our deaths.
Except that with my mere touch, power flows through Aria in a way it never has before, and it’s becoming clear that our gods lied to keep us separated and weak.
Together, our strength feels unstoppable. But the monsters hunting her are more sinister than we could have imagined—a threat that could end all humanity.
Will our newfound powers be enough to save us?
*Walking in Darkness is book two in the Darkness Duet. Please read the first book, Visions of Darkness, before enjoying this one.

Walking in Darkness (Darkness, #2) by A.L. Jackson
4/5 stars
I devoured the first book in this series, so I absolutely couldn't wait to read its sequel. Walking in Darkness picks right up where Visions of Darkness left off.
Aria is in a different plane from Pax and Tearsith. She sees the man from the diner. He seems to be a Laven. Human and ethereal. But quickly she figures out he is different. He tells her his name is Ambrose and he grabs her by her throat and angrily spits that she is a Valient and that he will kill her and her kind. Her power of light comes to the surface and combined with a kick she is able to push him away. The light burns a hole and she falls through the hole.
She wakes up on earth next to Pax in their hotel room. Ambrose told her he sent the Ghorl they defeated in the first book and that he comes after her next. Aria and Pax tell Ellis when they enter Tearsith wat happened and Ellis conveys the message to all the other Laven and their Nols.
Soon after, the Laven start to die. Some fear it's because of the fact that Aria and Pax are together and upset the universe. But they tell them that they are actually much stronger together. And things suddenly change when they realize someone lied and their entire belief system is thrown over and they were taught the wrong beliefs for decades.
They need to unite to defeat Ambrose and the Kruen. They become one solid unit and I love how powerful they are together.
This book is fast paced and I love how easy it was to fall back into this world again. This romantasy is easy to understand and the fast pace made it an exciting read.
One of my favorite scenes was the scene between Aria and her mother and siblings. Where she finally gets the recognition she longed for so long. It was powerful and it made my heart thump a little heavier and lighter at the same time.
I love that Jill has a short appearance as well. She was my favorite side character in the first book and I wish her part was a little bigger in the second one.
Dani and Timothy added so much to the overall storyline. I love their story and the presence they have in this second installment.
This book shows what true love is. What true friendship is. What unity is and what it means to have each other's back no matter what. It shows you how important open communication is and how important it is to trust your gut feeling. I really loved the togetherness and how eager the characters were to learn and evolve.
4 huge stars from me for Walking in Darkness! A brilliant romantasy duet debut by A.L. Jackson.
DNF'd at 40%... I just lost steam on this one. May pick up in the future. Nothing too offensive, I'm just not vibing with it and I's rather tap out now.
I am swooning over the chemistry between Aria and Pax in this continuation of their story from book one “Visions of Darkness”. This book picks up right where we left off with Aria and Pax fighting for their survival and to better understand the threat they face, a threat to not only themselves but also everyone they love. A.L. Jackson’s writing explores those same dark psychological thriller elements that felt all consuming in book one, making this book hard to put down. Aria and Pax have fought for their love, a forbidden bond that should have never been explored during the light of day and only in their dreams. But their love for each other is so powerful and cannot be controlled by anyone or anything! The plot is driven by intensity and heart stopping moments as they fight evil and supernatural forces while on the run. If you enjoy romantasy and fated-mates then you will love this final chapter in this epic duet! 👏
What an addictive ride! Walking in Darkness by A.L. Jackson was a dark and alluring romantasy that captured my attention and my heart from start to finish. Picking up right where Visions of Darkness left off, this book explores the epic conclusion to Aria and Pax’s wild, mysterious adventure. We return to Tearsith and Earth and soon discover these two realms may be colliding, creating a heart-stopping ending.
Victoria Mei and Teddy Hamilton perform this audiobook in dual narration, and both once again deliver the magic between Aria and Pax. Victoria’s soft, sensual voice captures Aria’s determined and courageous spirit as she refuses to be defeated by her enemy. Teddy’s warm, soothing tone made you love and fall hard for Pax and all his possessive and protective charm. Plus, both narrators created a fated mates kind of love and chemistry that made these two irresistible.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. If you are a fan of a dark, alluring romantasy with a fiercely brave Valient, a hot, dedicated protector, an evil villian up to no good, intimate moments, family truths, dangerous street encounters, on the run, morning strawberry doughnuts, reuniting with other Laven, explosive spice, unexpected kidnapping, finding your strenghth, big battle scene, and a HEA that will light up your soul, then you will love Aria and Pax’s story. I always look forward to more from A.L. Jackson.
I'm so glad I was finally able to see what happened with Pax & Aria! If you haven't read the first book, Visions of Darkness, you have to read that one first. This one picks up right after it.
Walking in Darkness is action packed and will keep you interested the entire time. As I was reading, it felt like a movie reel was playing in my head. I just had to know how it ends and it did not disappoint!! I loved Pax & Aria together... true soulmates. And I loved it when Dani and Timothy joined them too! They all protective each other with everything they had. Pax would do absolutely anything to save and protect his girl. I can't say too much without giving things away but this was a great ending to this duet!
Thank you to AL Jackson & Valentine PR for this ARC.
This is the second book in the Darkness series and must be read in order as this book continues right where book one, Visions in Darkness, leaves off. Now I really enjoyed book one, but I absolutely loved book two. The story was fast paced, so intriguing and had me on the edge of my seat not wanting to put it down. I was lucky enough to get both an ALC and an ARC of this book and let me tell you I was fully immersed. Pax and Aria have such a special connection and I just loved taking this adventure with them!
Thank you to Valentine PR & Literary Mgmt for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Pax and Aria have already overcome so many obstacles to be together, but the final battle still lies ahead. As Laven, they travel to another realm in their dreams to fight monsters that instill evil into human minds, and they believed that was their sole purpose. But as Aria's great powers come to light, it's clear they were meant for more. They thought the worst of the battle was over, but they were wrong. As they search for the truth about themselves and their power, secrets of the past will come to light, changing everything. But now it isn't only Aria being hunted. Their entire Laven family is in danger, and stopping the evil might be in Aria's hands. Can they both survive what's to come, or will it tear them apart?
This was a fantastic end to the Darkness Duet. Be sure to read Visions of Darkness first, as this is not a standalone story. I love a good fated mates book, and this one is done very well. The mystery of the Lavens kept me turning the pages, as did the romance. Pax is a man obsessed, and I adore him. I loved how some loose ends from book one were all tied together in a way that made sense but still took me by surprise. The fantasy aspect of the book is really unique, and it was interesting to learn more about the Lavens and the dreamworld. I was really on the edge of my seat, especially for the second half of the book. I wasn't sure how things would work out, or if they would at all. If you enjoyed book one, absolutely read the conclusion to this excellent duet!

“Turns out, you were the blood in my veins. Because looking at you, Aria Rialta? I came alive for the very first time. It’s when I understood the meaning of this life. Years spent denying it . . . forcing myself into accepting that you were only meant for me in Tearsith and Faydor. It was torment, Aria. Being without you was nothin’ but torment, resisting you the most painful thing I’ve ever done.”
And just like that Pax & Aria have their happily ever after 🥹 I will say they went through so much to get there but the peace they found at the end was so worth it 🫶🏼
As Pax & Aria begin to unfold the truth about their people, Lavens, they discover the fight is just beginning. With their history being twisted to benefit an evil they have been fighting for decades they must bring the Laven people together to see the truth and fight back with all they have. What would you do if you found out all the dark & negativity in the world stemmed from evil entities only a special kind of person can fight?
I loved how Pax did not falter in this book. In book one he was so hesitant to love Aria, but in this one? NOPE. I absolutely adore them. And when they broke the truth to their people? Ugh my heart 😩 The action in this one was amazing! I was on the edge of my seat just about the entire time. I’m so sad their story has come to a close but I wouldn’t change anything about it.
I don’t want to say much more and spoil anything, as I was an ARC reader for this book 🥰 Huge thank you to AL Jackson and VPR for my eARC 🫶🏼
What an amazing ending to this duet!! I have been waiting to see what happened to Aria and Pax and this was everything I needed! The universe that Amy created was amazing. I was swept away. I read fantasy but this duet was just different and I loved it. This world was easy to follow and the world building in this was written perfectly, it wasn’t too much.
Aria and Pax have my heart. They always will. I loved how Pax will do everything in his power to make sure Aria is safe and I love the way they have so much trust in each other. Aria is the chosen one and she will do everything it takes to help protect and save her people. Pax wants to protect Aria and will have her back through it all. Pax is just everything to me.
I had such a hard time wanting to put this down. It was so action packed and so much was happening that I had to put my responsibilities on pause so I can finish this! I think Amy did such an amazing job with this duet and it ended perfectly!
If you don’t read fantasy or maybe want to start but don’t know where, I highly recommend picking up this duet. It was perfect and different then most fantasy reads. The way the two worlds collide.. JUST WOW.

📖”She was the light that burned inside me. A beacon. My only destination.”
This feels like the end of an era. I was so deep into this world, so alike ours and yet so different. AL Jackson created such an engaging narrative, with an unique take on PNR. I don’t think I’ve ever read a romantasy like this duet, and I’m very much sure it will stay with me for a long time.
The premise catches you almost by surprise. Despite the supernatural quality to it, the whole thing is... believable, truly easy to see it playing out in our own reality. And I guess that’s both reassuring and scary.
But for me what stands out the most is the bond between the characters. Yes, the romance is top top notch. But it’s even more than just the romance. How their *family* cares, protects and is there for one another is truly inspiring. Burdens shared weigh less, and love nurtured grows so much stronger.
Thank you AL Jackson for this tale of strength, love and hope.
"I will raze them all to the ground. Every fuckin' one of them. And I won't stop until there's no one person left to come after you."
3.5 ⭐1.5🌶️
what a great conclusion to this duology! I am seriously so impressed with the world building in this series I really came to love Aria and Pax and their relationship to their other friends
Aria and Pax are honestly my fav part of the duology their "Forbidden" love and how they will literally sacrifice anything to get to each other just speaks to my romantic side in me ... I LOVE THEM
it did confuse me that the events of this story take place over the span of 2 weeks. I think it could have been drawn out more, especially because some things happen where I was like "why the rush"? but overall I think this is a great beginner romantasy to dive into
I think the writing is very easy to understand and get lost in it has some spice but not too much to feel overwhelming to the plot I loved how it all wraps up in the end! these two definitely will have some PTSD like I would be so afraid to fall asleep after this LOL but I know having each other they will be okay <3
Walking in Darkness continues right where book one, Visions of Darkness left off. Let me tell you, it is nothing but heart pounding, nonstop action!
Aria and Pax are back at it; with a whole new terrifying threat they need to figure out how to destroy. Along with that comes the shocking realization that everything they've been led to believe their whole lives may very well have been nothing but lies. What should they believe? How do they figure out what is truth and what was just carefully crafted deception by the enemy?
Besides my heart being in my throat through most of this story, it was also stretched thin quite a few times at the emotional and oftentimes heartbreaking events that occur. Not only are Aria and Pax battling the evil threatening to destroy them, but they're also grappling with their own struggles of feeling accepted and even loved. It’s something that has plagued them their whole lives.
A.L. Jackson has truly outdone herself with this fantastical, emotional story! I'm sad the story is over. Or is it? The last line leads me to think we might see more of Pax and Aria someday...
Pax and Aria are together now for better or worse. Somehow being together makes them stronger but they were always told being together would lead to their downfall. With the end of the world as they know it rapidly approaching, they have to figure out how to defeat this evil and if everything they know is a lie.
The wait for this book was ROUGH. Thankfully if you’re seeing this review it means it’s already available and you can dive right in to both parts. I fell hard for Pax and Aria in book one and honestly I loved them even more in book two. They are the true definition of soul mates and together they can truly do it all. This book we got to learn more about the rest of her “family” and they were equally compelling.
The pacing of this book was perfect. I loved the short lulls where Pax and Aria can have time to breathe and discover each other with the intense moments of suspense where everything is at stake. She masterfully pulled together all the groundwork she laid in book one to give us the most satisfying ending. On one hand I didn’t want it to end but I needed these two to get their well deserved HEA.
Teddy Hamilton and Victoria Mei were the perfect Pax and Aria. Teddy embodied Pax’s deeply intense love for Aria along with his fierce determination to keep her safe even at his own personal sacrifice. And Victoria perfectly captured Aria’s inner strength, empathy and drive to save them all mo matter the cost. I highly recommend picking up the audios if you’re a audiobook lover like me.
Thanks so much to @valentine_pr_ for providing me with an ALC for review!
This was the long awaited conclusion to Amy's first paranormal duet and I could not be happier!
Walking in Darkness picks up where Visions in Darkness left off. We are instantly back in the suspense and the mysteries as Pax and Aria are attempted to understand more about their history and ultimately their destiny. There is so many nuanced details told in Amy's beautiful story telling that had me gripping the edges of my kindle and frantically reading to find out what happens next.
I loved seeing how devoted and steadfast Pax was throughout. His love for Aria was eternal and never ending and it leapt from the pages as Aria and Pax fought to uncover the truth of their Lavern people.
As the ultimate battle ramped up, I also enjoyed the interactions between their family. These individuals all were looking for a home and they found a family amongst each other. In a battle between the ultimate evil, their bonds of family shined throughout and gave them the strength they needed in the battle. I don't want to review too much, as there is so much that can become spoilery, but I can say that I felt all the emotions while the battle was going on to the books finish.
Thank you so much to AL Jackson and Valentine PR for an early copy of Walking in Darkness! This was such a beautiful duet that speaks to good vs evil and kindness vs darkness.

The way I was at the edge of my seat the ENTIRE book! I have been in desperate need of more Pax and Aria since Visions of Darkness. I’m so excited for book two in the duet to finally be here!
I love this AL Jackson duet. This duet has the perfect mix of fantasy and realism that makes you feel like this could be somebody’s reality and we’d never know.
Before starting this book, please start with book 1: Visions of Darkness. Walking in Darkness picks up right at the cliffhanger in book 1. In this book, we learn more about the threat they and everyone they love will face.
This duet is action packed with the perfect blend of romance. We continue exploring the bond that was forbidden to be explored during the day.

Book two in this series, make sure you definitely read Book 1, Vision of Darkness first!
OMG, this book! Teddy Hamilton and Victoria Mei did a phenomenal job narrating, but I have to say, Teddy’s voice absolutely brings it to life for me. This story takes you on a wild emotional ride that you won’t want to get off of.
Pax and Aria completely complete each other. Their chemistry, their growth, their strength, everything about them just clicks. And that ending? I’m still not over it!
Between Book 1 and Book 2, all those lingering questions get answered, and there are so many “oh sugar!” moments that had me gasping. It all came together perfectly.
If you love intense emotions, strong characters, and a story that stays with you. This series is a must-read (or listen)!
This is the last book in the darkness duet. I was more interested in the plot than the romance in this one. I like how in this world some are chosen to fight the demons during their sleep. I wanted more tension between the two main characters. This is a very fast read! So if you want to read a duology where the world building is easy to understand then I recommend
Thank you to Valentine PR and the author for sending me this ARC
Loved this second book in this romantasy duet from AL Jackson! This book picks up right where the first book left off and we dive into Pax and Aria’s world. I loved the suspense in this one and it had me on the edge of my seat as I was trying to figure out the connections between the two worlds. As always the story flowed so well and I loved the chemistry that continued to build between these two! Highly recommend!
Walking in Darkness is the second book in the Darkness series. This book is the continuation of Pax and Aria's story, and is told from both of their points of view.
Aria and Pax have fought to be together, and now they are going to fight to save their people. They have so much thrown at them in this book. Can they make it out together?
There were so many twists and turns I didn't see coming in this book, and I enjoyed getting to know these characters, and seeing them grow together.
Will they get their happily ever after? Or will they be torn apart for good? I enjoyed this duet, and this was the perfect ending!
Omg I absolutely needed this book!! I needed to know what happened to Pax and Aria. The fact that they brought so much love and passion to each other is the best. He is literally the perfect man!! He loves her so fierce and hard, but yet so gentle to her, encouraging, and protective of her. There’s absolutely nothing he wouldn’t do for her.
The journey these two go one together is one for the books. They bring everyone together to discover the truth that no one knew. The truth that was always hidden from them. The truth that should have been out in the open from the beginning, but due to greed, it was hidden and never revealed until it was almost too late.
Pax and Aria are the perfect pair to do this and win the war. He had her back the entire time and never questioned her with anything she did. And she always, and I mean always, had his back. Even if he tried to keep her away from everything bad.
And the narrators did ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! I mean you have my most favorite male narrator, Teddy Hamilton, that’s doing the voice of Pax like in the first one, and I seriously don’t think there could have been a more perfect person for this to be done in duel narration. Teddy always does the best! And for Aria you have Victoria Mei again, and gods, she does a hands down 5 star performance in duel narration. They both put the feeling and passion into the characters, they both gave the goosebumps for days to make you in a book hangover that makes you wish you were a knoll!
what an amazing end to this story. it picked up right where book one left off and followed pax and arias story and how they managed to navigate their purpose together. it really wrapped up the story and so much grief and sadness happened but the ending was perfect and everything i hoped for! super grateful for the early copy and definitely recommend reading!
Fantastic continuation of this thrilling romantasy duet. I love the dual worlds, fighting evil and monsters in minds it's a very unique twist, so many obstacles for Pax and Aria! Together, they are stronger, and what an epic ending. "You're the other half of my soul." It's great romantasy I think you'll enjoy!
Wow once again I'm blown away by AL Jackson's story telling which by now I should not be surprised! This story was like a vivid movie playing in front of me as I was reading page after page, needless to say I was consumed!
I absolutely loved A.L. Jackson’s first foray into paranormal romance and with this conclusion to the Darkness duet, I’d say score knocked it out of the park. And I loved even more getting to listen to a review copy of the audiobook (great narrators)!
This picked up right where book one left off and kept the action going so throughout. Whenever there were moments of down time, they were beautiful and sweet and just made me love Pax and Aria even more
The love and emotion and tension between Aria and Pax was every bit as heart wrenching, but also gave us a purpose for why they were so connected. Not everything was easy and our two MC’s definitely had a journey to get through, but the moments of hope and dreams made it all worth it.
While I’m sad to see their story come to an end, I can honestly say that nobody could have done them justice the way A.L. Jackson did and in a way that made feel so worth it. I for one cannot wait for what else she brings us in the paranormal variety.
What is the best way to describe this book? It's book two in the Darkness duet. The battle between good and evil is still going on.
Aria and Pax fight the Laven in Tearsith together when they go to sleep on Earth. They were born to do this. But they were never supposed to meet in the real world.
But Pax did everything he could to protect Aria. Even break the rules to be by her side. Because she's his soulmate, even though it was forbidden. And they fell in love anyway.
And they discovered something that might help them win the battle. When they touch, their powers are amplified.
And when they are joined by others from Tearsith, they have no idea what their combined powers are capable of.
Thank you so much to the author and Valentine PR for this ARC to review.
A.L. Jackson continues to prove why she’s an auto-buy author for me with Walking in Darkness, the gripping and emotional conclusion to Aria and Pax’s duet. This story drops us immediately back into the danger, mythology, and heartache of their two intertwined worlds—and I was hooked from page one.
What really stood out to me in this installment is the depth of the character arcs. Aria steps into her power in a way that feels courageous and earned, while Pax remains that fiercely devoted, morally grey protector who will burn down the world if it means keeping her safe. Their bond is intense and unwavering, and Jackson captures that connection with her signature lyrical prose that always hits straight in the chest.
The plot moves quickly, weaving new revelations, rising threats, and unraveling truths that reshape everything we thought we knew in book one. The stakes feel higher, the world-building richer, and the found-family dynamics even more heart-squeezing. It’s action, emotion, mystery, and devotion all braided together with that unmistakable A.L. Jackson magic.
As for spice, this book definitely brings a little more heat than Visions of Darkness, but it stays firmly grounded in emotion and purpose. I’d still call it 1.5🌶️ on my scale, with beautifully intimate moments that deepen the romance without overpowering the story.
If you loved Visions of Darkness, you’re going to devour this finale. Walking in Darkness is atmospheric, addictive, and full of heart—a stunning conclusion to a truly unique romantasy duet.
🎧 Audiobook Review🎧
Performance 5⭐
Narrated by Teddy Hamilton & Victoria Mei
Walking in Darkness is every bit as heart-pounding and emotionally charged in audio as it is on the page. With danger tightening around Aria and Pax from every direction, the narration amplifies the urgency, the intimacy, and the raw devotion at the center of their story. I was fully locked in from the start—heart racing, nerves humming, completely swept up in the intensifying bond between these two soul-tethered fighters.
Teddy Hamilton and Victoria Mei are phenomenal in this finale. Teddy embodies Pax with that perfect blend of power, vulnerability, and unwavering protectiveness. You feel every ounce of his devotion—every moment he throws himself between Aria and the darkness chasing them. Victoria Mei breathes such fierce, aching determination into Aria’s voice. She captures Aria’s strength, her fear, her hope, her evolution. Together, they deliver a chemistry that’s tender, electric, and impossible to ignore.
This duet already has cinematic energy on the page, but the audio makes the battles feel bigger, the emotions sharper, and the love story even more gripping. The quiet moments between Aria and Pax hit differently in audio. They're soft, intimate breaths that feel like a stolen refuge from the storm. And when the action ramps up? I was practically on the edge of my seat.
This is one of those rare audiobooks that deepens the entire experience. The world of Tearsith and Faydor feels more vivid, the stakes more urgent, the found-family threads even more moving. Teddy and Victoria deliver performances that match the intensity, beauty, and emotion of A.L. Jackson’s writing, elevating every scene.
If you’re an audiobook listener—even an occasional one—this duet is absolutely worth experiencing in audio. A stunning, emotional, action-packed conclusion brought to life by two narrators who understood the assignment and then some.

“There are things beyond us that most cannot see. Battles for our spirits. Battles for our souls. There are beings who seek to protect and those who seek to destroy. And somehow my soul was called to protect. I go there every night . . . since the day I turned sixteen.” This is the epic conclusion to Aria and Pax’s story, and it’s meant to show you that real love really does conquer all and can beat any villain and defeat any evil.
This will be a spoiler-free, general review, so I don’t give anything away.
If you read the first book, Visions of Darkness, you’ll know that Pax and Aria are Laven, meant to fight for mankind. When they’re asleep, they’re transported to another place where they fight evil on our behalf. Evil that is meant to infiltrate our thoughts and minds and make us do terrible things.
This book starts right after the events of book one, Visions of Darkness, and is not meant to be read as a standalone.
“It’s true. Everything she said, it’s true. And I’m afraid that war has come here.” This time, the things they usually fight during the night are coming to get them while they’re awake. They’re powerful, and they want to take over the world. But as you find out more about Laven, their history and their past, and the relationship they have with their Nols, you also find they’re more powerful than they ever thought.
“You must rise with her. Stand at her side and never let go.” That’s not to say there aren’t obstacles in their way. There are bad people all around, coming for them. And something is gunning for all Laven, meaning to weaken them and make them feel helpless. I absolutely loved the feeling of found family. Yes, Aria has her own, but it’s beautiful to see people you are not related to by blood coming to help. Caring about you. Loving you. Empowering you to be more than you ever thought you would be.
“I would have followed you wherever you’d gone and fought for you there.” And through it all? Pax. Pax is swoony perfection in every moment. He loves Aria with a fierceness that you know means he’d lay down his life for her, and he’ll fight at her side. Even when it seems like their chances are slim to none and it’s all for nothing. His love for her was beautiful to witness.
“I need you. I need your touch. Your love. Your belief.” “And I need your everything,” In fact, it’s their love for each other that carries the whole book. Every moment, every interaction, every touch is meaningful because it’s them. And even when things seem lost, you believe it will all work out because of them. There can’t be a world when they’re not together.
“You’re every dream I’ve ever had. Every vision in the day. Every hope that I’ve dared to have. All of me, it’s yours.” Aria and Pax saved the world by finding each other and trusting that their love was worth it. Because only love can keep out the darkness.
