O carte absolut superba!
English:
An incredible book! I finished it in a day! A captivating story with a main character that I liked from start to finish. Both the storyline and the character portrayals were easy to follow.
The story follows Iulia, an 18 year old girl who lives with her mother, stepfather and stepbrothers. One night, in a dream, the spirit of a boy reveals himself and requests that Iulia solve the crime of his murder which was not a suicide, as portrayed by the media. This kickstarts a race against time in which Iulia discovers secrets about her family beyond anything she could have imagined, including the truth about the boy from her dream.
For me there were two parts that took me by surprise; firstly the sequence of events towards the end of events, and the epilogue. The epilogue revealed a confession I was not expecting from one of the characters. Because I live in London, I don’t have the chance to read many books in Romanian. And when I do, sometimes I struggle. But with this book, the story evolved in a way that was easy to follow.
There is also humour at times, especially in the dynamic between Iulia and her stepbrothers. But, alongside humour and mystery, the story illustrates characters who are dealing with specific issues that affect their generation - reflective of young people in today’s society. I really liked how the author tackled these topics.
I also had the chance to meet Rebeca at BookFest in Bucharest, and from speaking with her I decided to buy her book; and I was not disappointed!
