📖: Midnight Tempest

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.💫

“𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘳, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴—𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯.”

This standalone novella explores the origins of the lore set within the Unraveled Fate Series. In a small village plagued by disappearances, it is forbidden to worship the dark gods.

After narrowly escaping death, Aurora takes up the mantle of caretaker to her two younger siblings. But in her heart, she holds secrets of her own—secrets that could cost her everything.

Tropes:
💔No HEA
🧚God falling for a fae
☁️The clouds are smutty
🙋🏻He hates everyone but her
😈Good girl + bad boy
🚫Forbidden romance
🌳Little Red Riding Hood Vibes

Aurora is a portrait of grief and devotion. Her draw to Nyx, the God of Fear and Dreams, anchors her yet is dangerous. His interest grows to obsession and their forbidden passions ignite. Their love results in consequences altering fate and rippling across time.

Midnight Tempest paints a wistful and dreamlike tapestry of vengeful gods, misplaced fervor, and a soulful and devastating love story.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review.

This is a sweet and tragic novella set in Douglas’s Unraveled Fate Series. While it can absolutely be read as a standalone I would recommend reading it within the series since the tragedy has more purpose and context as part of a bigger picture, especially if you prefer stories with HEA’s. I definitely recommend this series in general if you like fae/mortals/gods at war + wyverns and tricky magic, starting with Lunaria. Midnight Tempest takes place before all other books in the series.

Aurora is the oldest of 3 and responsible for her 2 younger siblings in a poor fae village where people keep disappearing, her parents included. Many blame the dark gods, especially Nyx (god of fear and dreams) and therefore worshipping him is forbidden. Aurora prays to him in secret because she believes he saved her life, and is the only god who has ever answered her prayers. Nyx hasn’t been seen in centuries, but Aurora meets him face to face in a dream…

Aurora is one of those selfless people (or fae) that gives up her hopes and dreams for her family and deserves a break, but never gets one. Her only indulgence, if you can call it that, is secretly praying to Nyx. Her whole purpose in life is to keep her brother and sister safe and give them a better life.

Nyx is a lonely lesser god that most fae fear and no one prays to (even though his magic is gifted to about 25% of fae), and he could care less about fae and mortals, or really anyone including other gods. He is also cursed…until he meets Aurora. She becomes the light to his dark and shriveled heart.

This story starts off a little slow, maybe in part because Aurora’s life seems so difficult, but picks up after she starts seeing Nyx. There is a slow burn, friends to lovers vibe, with a backstory that inspires empathy for this grumpy god. I wasn’t so sure I liked him after Undying Lands. Really, I just wanted these 2 to find some happiness. They have a bittersweet love story that deserves more, but has to settle for less all for the greater good. I also think this will segue perfectly into book 3.
4⭐️’s.

This novella is a prequel written in the same world as Lunaria and Illuminance. These is no happily ever after but I didn't mind the ending honestly. I think it was the best scenario knowing that there was not going to be a HEA. This novella felt more character focus than plot focused and I didn't mind this however I do feel like adding more plot could have helped me to engage with the story a little more. I still recommend this book and it was nice to have more back story for what occurs prior to current events in this world!

Thank you to Kara for the eARC! All thoughts are my own.

✨ Midnight Tempest ✨ is a standalone novella in the heart pounding, soul shattering romantasy series ✨ The Unraveled Fate ✨ by the wonderful and one of my utmost favourite authors Kara Douglas.
(If you haven't started this series yet, PLEASE GO AND READ /LISTEN STATTT)

(Even though it can be read as a standalone book, I highly HIGHLY recommend to read the previous ones first so as to get better context about the non HEA part of the book .)

Anyways , Kara loves making us cry with her novellas , she knows how to emotionally WR3CK you , and WR3CK me she did !

And thus I introduce the TROPES of this recently released novella :

🖤 Fantasy Romance
✨ Dual POV
🖤 No HEA (𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝑰 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒔𝒂𝒚 👀)
✨ God falling for a fae (𝑰 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 ???)
🖤 The clouds are smutty (𝒀𝑬𝑺 𝑷𝑳𝑬𝑨𝑺𝑬 !!)

🖤 Good girl + bad boy (🔥 🔥)

I am in awe of Kara's writing and I think I've read everything she has ever written.
This novella is a character driven emotional rollercoaster story which creates a perfect stage for the upcoming book in this series ✨ Ignite ✨.

With the whimsical world building, slow burn romance and soul shattering ending , this book is perfect to send you spinning into a book Hangover! You might end up staring at the wall for a prolonged period of time .. (you have been warned 😈)

oh my nyx, I loved this sm!! 🐦‍⬛❄️☁️

this novella was somehow packed to the brim with angst & yearning in just 200 pages.

definitely need to do a reread of the series for two reasons:
-i missed the magic and emotion with the way Kara writes
-i want (need) to remember nyxs role in lunaria

“He was dark, and he was light. He was the sun, and he was the moon. And one day, she would make sure everyone knew it.”

"His voice had softened, his lips brushing against her ear. “You’re a dream I never want to wake from.””

“If we have the stars, then we will never be alone.”

and he smells like ice and ground pepper, cmon

I knew going into this book my feelings were going to be hurt but man I am unwell.

I highly, highly recommend reading the first two books and Undying lands before reading this one otherwise some of the plot points would be spoiled.

We get to see Aurora and Nyx's relationship through its entirety in this book. Everything explains everything as to how Daimon and other characters came into existence.

I really cannot tell you anymore without spoiling literally everything. Just know you finally get some answers and we can officially yell at Kara to give us book 3 in the unraveled fate series because I am dying to see more wyvern riders.

Thank you Kara Douglas for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review,

𝑀𝒾𝒹𝓃𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉 𝒯𝑒𝓂𝓅𝑒𝓈𝓉 by 𝒦𝒶𝓇𝒶 𝒟𝑜𝓊𝑔𝓁𝒶𝓈 is a novella set in the world of 𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝒰𝓃𝓇𝒶𝓋𝑒𝓁𝑒𝒹 𝐹𝒶𝓉𝑒𝓈. I started the series last fall, and I fell in love with it! After the first two books we jump back with a prequel, and then we have 𝑀𝒾𝒹𝓃𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉 𝒯𝑒𝓂𝓅𝑒𝓈𝓉 which is also a prequel. While it doesn’t have to be read as part of the series, I do think it amplifies the emotional impact if you do. But good news, because there is so much for you to love in all of these books!

Anyway, let’s get into 𝑀𝒾𝒹𝓃𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉 𝒯𝑒𝓂𝓅𝑒𝓈𝓉. I loved reading Aurora’s story, and seeing how much she loves and cares about her siblings. She is their guardian, and she always puts them before herself without complaint. We also get to know her siblings and their personalities, especially Leila, who’s a little firecracker.

Although there is a dark creature haunting their village and murdering the townspeople, Aurora still sneaks out at night to pray to Nyx… and girl, I can’t blame you for that! Once Nyx and Aurora started interacting and bantering, I was so excited. He’s very much a shadow daddy and I just love him so much. Even though he’s a mighty god, he’s still so vulnerable in some ways and I just wanted to give him a hug.

Another thing I love about Aurora is that she sees things in shades of grey. I completely agree that most things aren’t so simply black and white, and that it’s crucial to see the nuances within.

Kara warned us that the story doesn’t have a happy ending, and from reading the other books, I did know what was going to happen. But guess what, it didn’t matter. I was still devastated at the end of the book and Kara made me cry! I think that speaks to how well Kara allows her readers to connect with the characters. I felt so much for them, and the impossible situations they were put in.

Thank you so much to Kara Douglas and Bookish Laboratory for the advanced review copy!

ok but i need to know what laying on a cloud would feel like so badly

🌟🌟🌟🌟

for a 200 page novella, this was really good. she did a great job packing in a lot of emotion and depth without making it too over complicated or not complex enough. it was one of the few books i’ve read without a proper HEA so it was definitely a lingering thought in my mind as i did read. the way she was able to foreshadow certain things and the way we see events play out - albeit not as we expected - was really gripping. it kept me in the story and it felt pretty real.

i like how we touch on religious trauma in a way and we touch on how devotion can range from normal to obsessive. she did a really good job showing the different sides of religion and worship which i really enjoyed. it also helped add some tension to the story so we didn’t feel safe if our fmc was out praying to nyx who is basically hated and totally outlawed.

the world was fully developed but not so much it was a trauma dump, but that it covered all the bases and made sure we had an idea of how it all worked. and i also loved getting a few nyx pov’s!!! it was so heartwarming to see how he developed and how their relationship developed over time.

overall this was really good for a novella!!! i usually get weird about reading novellas as they can feel rushed or redundant, but this didn’t feel like either of those things. i’m really interested to see if this plays into her other world and if she’ll ever expand on that ending 😗

again THIS IS NOT A HEA!!! fair warning friends!

“Do not mourn me, for we have created something the Divine did not plan.”

Now that’s what I call a one-night stand: hooked up with a village girl, got her pregnant, and basically said, “Well, fate didn’t see this coming - goodbye.”

Reading Midnight Tempest kind of felt like following the story of an unimportant female side character who, for some unexplained reason, caught the eye of a lesser god. Meanwhile, the actual main characters were off doing what they do best - saving the world from the great evil.

I really liked the premise, and the worldbuilding glimpses were interesting, but it often felt like too much crammed into too few pages. At the same time, I needed more - more time with the characters, more depth to their choices, more weight to the story. The pacing swung between drawn out and rushed, and it made me feel like I was always waiting for the “real” plot to start.

Overall, the concept had potential, but the execution left me wishing there was more room to breathe. I also thought this was a standalone, but the ending left me wondering if there’s more to come.

And lastly, I do want to thank the author for sending me the ARC, and I’m sorry I didn’t finish it before release. My family has been taking turns getting sick again (always fun when your kid brings home every possible virus from school - just not the knowledge)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Midnight Tempest is a standalone tragic novella set in the Unravelled Fates world, and is advertised as not having a happily ever after. You’d think that, with this warning, I would have prepared myself? Well… I didn’t 🫣

I love Kara’s writing, and how much emotion is poured into her books. I found Midnight Tempest to be such a bingeable character-driven heart-wrenching novella, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. While it is a standalone, I loved how much backstory it gives for the Unravelled Fate series, and I cannot wait to do a reread of them soon 🥰 I definitely found it so emotional and impactful having read Lunaria, Illuminance, and Undying Lands first.

Do not get me started on Nyx. Honestly, I wasn’t his biggest fan after Undying Lands, but Midnight Tempest has shown me a different side to him. His yearning for Aurora, and willingness to burn the world for her, and reading his POV was so interesting 🔥 Their love is tragic and forbidden, and will change the fate of so many lives!

“He was dark, and he was light. He was the sun, and he was the moon. And one day, she would make sure everyone knew it.”

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy. This review is my own honest opinion.

Midnight Tempest is short, dark, and devastating. Aurora’s story pulled me in immediately—the danger of her village, the mystery of disappearing people, and the forbidden love with Nyx, a god who shouldn’t even exist in her world.

Kara Douglas writes with precision: every page builds tension, every twist cuts deeper. I loved the quick pace, the tragic romance, and the gut-wrenching ending that I naively hoped wouldn’t come (even though I was warned!).

This is a perfect addition to the Lunaria world, and I can’t wait to revisit it.

Is it possible for a book to break your heart and you still love it? Because Kara has done it again. This story is the most heartbreakingly beautiful thing I’ve read since Undying Lands. Kara gave each of the characters an incredible level of depth considering it was a novella. Seriously I adored this book and still sobbed even though I knew the ending from previous books in the series. You need this series in your life, I didn’t want this book to end.

Thank you so much Kara for my Advanced copy! This novella tore me open! I finished this so fast! From the opening line until the very end this story HAD me.

Disappearances shrouded in mystery, a village surrounded by danger, dark vs light gods, and a doomed romance between a God and a Fae…everything about this was deliciously dark and devastatingly good!

Ugh, Kara knows how to pack in a ride of all the emotions. Aurora and Nyx’s dynamic was absolute perfection! I love that we got this deeper dive into the Lunaria world and cannot wait for even more expansion with the upcoming releases.

Thank you Kara for letting me be an ARC reader for Midnight Tempest.
This book is an absolute masterpiece. However, before diving in make sure you're prepared with enough tissues and hydration to make it to the end. You're going to need it. While Midnight Tempest was marketed as not having a Happily Ever After, I was not prepared for how much my heart would break for sweet Nyx & Aurora.
Even though this can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the rest of the Unraveled Fate series to truly get the gut punch this book is capable of. I never knew such a short little novella could wreck my heart the way this book did! Kudos to you Kara for another fabulous addition to the Unraveled Fate series!

This novella was emotional, gut wrenching, and absolutely AMAZING! I adore getting more from my favorite fantasy worlds and despite going into this knowing I would not get an HEA, it was worth every second of emotional pain. The way Aurora slowly breaks down the walls around Nyx’s heart and her hope despite everything thrown against her is awe inspiring! The tension is there even with this being a short read and I loved Nyx’s protectiveness of Aurora. It made me love the main series even more and want to start a reread!!

✨Midnight Tempest✨

Author: Kara Douglas
Release: September 25, 2025

Kara is a master at making novellas a perfection. Heartbreaking. Aching. But so beautiful and complete. It’s true. First, Undying Lands and now Midnight Tempest. Rarely do you find a sense of depth and closeness with characters and their world in such a short number of pages.

This bittersweet novella is set in the same world as Lunaria and is a prequel that, both it and Undying Lands, gives us a deeper look into the machinations of what brought us to book 2’s (Illuminance) cliffhanger ending. Though it is part of this series, it is NOT necessary to have read any of it for this book to be complete and agonizing snd precious.

We follow a dual 3rd person POV within a tiny, superstitious town tucked into a wintery landscape that is being plagued by a monster taking villagers and leaving only their bones in return. After being rescued one dark night several years back, Aurora prays to the only gods who listened and saved her. However, this god is banned, outcast, and worshipping him results in banishment or death. But when Aurora begins seeing him in her dreams, she is willing to take the risk.

Nyx has been invisible for longer than he can remember, cursed to never be seen again since he was cast out and lost his worshippers. At least, until one woman believes in him more than he’s ever believed in himself.

Sometimes I find it hard to get sucked into a novella, but Kara is a magician and I devoured this 200 page read. I found myself loving and relating to our soft, faithful FMC and the vulnerable bits of our MMC made me absolutely adore him. (Which was so helpful after reading undying lands!) I enjoyed this read independently and as a part of Kara’s Unraveled Fates series. And while it was painful, it also left me with hope!

Tropes you may find in MT are god x fae, forbidden romance, monsters, cozy-ish vibes, he hates everyone but her, 🔥 the world for her, fae bargains, low spice (1 scene), she saves him, and a not so happy ever after.

Kara, I am so invested in this series. Thank you for continuing to let me be an arc reader for you!

ARC Review - Release Date September 25, 2025

𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔, 𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒅𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒅 𝒂𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎. 𝑨𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒅, 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔.

It's been a week since I finished this tragically beautiful novella and I have not finished another book since. I read the end of this while standing in my child's dentist appointment and I did my best to hide the fact that I was crying. This wrecked me and I'm still struggling to recover. It is very clearly advertised as "no HEA" so you would think I would go in prepared. Honestly, I thought I did. I knew this was going to hurt and I went in TERRIFIED. And yet, I still wasn't prepared.

(I didn't realize it was connected to The Unraveled Fate series when I started it. I haven't read Undying Lands yet —the Unraveled Fate prequel novel no. 2.5— but I was told it was fine to read this first.)

I LOVED the worldbuilding and lore that you get with this book. The characters in this novella are completely separate from Lunaria and Illuminance, but it is the same world and Kara has packed an extraordinary amount of lore into this small package. I think even if you were to jump into this as your first of Kara's books you wouldn't be lost. She explains enough of the worldbuilding that you know what's happening if you're new to the series, and the perfect amount to refresh your memory if you're coming back to it.

I adore these characters and their story. Aurora and Nox are so unique and captivating. I was locked in to their story from the beginning. I enjoyed Nox' character immensely but Aurora had me enthralled. She is so steadfast and selfless. I found her character to be both uplifting and heartbreaking.

Because it is a brief and tragic story I don't want to give too much away, but when you read this, have tissues handy and stay hydrated.

Thank you Kara Douglas for providing me with an advance ready copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review!

There is an ominous monster lurking in the darkness surrounding the small village of Morior. No one knows what it is, and no one wants to find out.
Aurora is a lovable character who is devoted to two things in life: protecting her younger sister and brother, and her faith in the god of dreams and nightmares, Nyx. The realm considers Nyx to be evil, but Aurora disagrees. When her god answers her prayers, Aurora becomes determined to learn more about the real Nyx…

This novella started off as a total nail-biter for me. The monster in the woods and the curfew on the village had me in such a chokehold; I wanted to know more! I found myself wanting more of the story with what was happening in the darkness, where the villagers were disappearing to, and what exactly was out there. Although I obviously LOVED the romance part of this book, and I loved watching the MCs fall for each other, I felt like some of the romance chapters could have been broken up with a bit more story. I realized at one point I was reading about 40 pages straight of romance with barely a nod to the storyline, which bored me a little bit; I had to put this down a few times and come back to it. That being said, I was ecstatic when we finally got some answers about what was going on! I also really loved the way this book ended. It’s tragically delicious, and even though there is no HEA, I still felt satisfied at the end!

Thank you so much Kara Douglas for the eARC of Midnight Tempest. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’ve been a fan of Kara Douglas since I first read her Romantasy debut, Lunaira. Naturally, when she announced a novella set in the same world that promised to expand on the backgrounds of two key characters, I immediately knew I had to read it. I’m so glad I did because Midnight Tempest hits all the right notes!

Let me start off by saying that you do not need to read the previous books in the Unraveled Fate series before you read Midnight Tempest. In my opinion, Midnight Tempest is the perfect introduction to Kara Douglas for readers that are interested in reading her work for the first time without committing to a full length novel. It’s emotional, angsty, spicy, heartbreaking, and will undoubtedly have you running to the bookstore to pick up everything on her backlist!

Ok, now let’s break it down. This slow-burn romance between a lesser known Valon god and a faithful fae was just so satisfying. Nyx and Aurora’s chemistry absolutely sizzled on the page. They managed to make my heart both skip a beat and break in the span of 27 short chapters (plus an epilogue), which, let’s be honest, is no easy feat to achieve. I appreciate the Undying Lands so much more after reading Midnight Tempest and can hardly wait for the next installment!

In the pages, you will find:

❤️a god falling for a far
🔥Spice in the clouds
😡He can’t stand anyone but her
🚫Forbidden romance
💔No happily ever after
📕 Short chapters
📖A standalone tragic novella

I received this book as an ARC.

Ahhhhh! Kara Douglas, this was SO GOOD! I devoured this book in just a few hours.

Midnight Tempest is a standalone novella centered on the MMC and FMC, Nyx and Aurora's romantic tragedy. It's emotional. It's thrilling. It's a love story that makes your heart ache.

The world is set in The Unraveled Fate Series. Aurora's village has been plagued with disappearances for years, including Aurora's own two parents, leaving her with the sole responsibility to care for her two younger siblings. The villagers are scared and willing to punish anyone associated with Nyx, who they blame for these disappearances. Aurora knows better, and throughout this novella, we watch their relationship grow from a devout believer and mysterious god to a deeply felt, burn down the world love.

I've become a big fan of Kara Douglas, and she does an amazing job developing her characters and their relationships. She makes the transition from strangers to lovers feel real and believable. You believe the love felt between Aurora and Nyx, and you feel every bit of the tragedy. As Kara Douglas told us in the beginning, there would be no HEA. I was hesitant to read this because I love a HEA. However, despite no HEA, I am satisfied and content with how she wrapped up the Epilogue. Another great job.

After reading this, I now feel inspired to re-read Lunaria before moving onto the second book Illuminance.

‼️This is Nyx & Aurora’s story‼️ Prepare for a romantic tragedy that blends a gothic storytelling with Red Riding Hood vibes to keep you on the edge of your seat!!

🖤 Midnight Tempest by @authorkaradouglas is a tragic romantic standalone novella with a forbidden love between a god & a fae. While the characters do originate from The Unraveled Fate series, it does not need to be read in order to read this book.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

💙 I love @authorkaradouglas writing, and even though I knew this story didn’t have a happy ending, she makes the gut-wrenching and emotional pain worth every second. With this short & fast-paced novella, Kara weaves together a beautifully tragic backstory with a yearning slow burn and a bittersweet friends to lovers vibe that inspires the reader to show some sympathy for this grumpy god and lonely fae.

💙 I loved getting to see how both Aurora & Nyx slowly break down each other's walls and build on their chemistry and tension. Their forbidden passion grows emotional, obsessive and dangerous - altering fates that no one ever expected (especially if you read the whole series 🤫 )

Midnight Tempest is the kind of novella that reminds you that beauty and tragedy sometimes live hand in hand. Kara doesn’t offer us a happily ever after here, but something more bittersweet.

“ɪɴ ᴅʀᴇᴀᴍꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ɪꜱ ꜰʀᴇᴇᴅᴏᴍ, ᴀɴᴅ ɪɴ ꜱʜᴀᴅᴏᴡꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ɪꜱ ʜᴏᴘᴇ.”

Aurora and Nyx’s story touched my heart, and it’s one that I am happy to know despite being sad for the ending.

Auroras love and devotion to her siblings was so sweet, and I truly feel like she was dealt such a shit hand at life. Nyx is just… *I’m a puddle on the floor* and I don’t blame Aurora for her choices.

Midnight Tempest can be read on its own but I thoroughly suggest reading it within the Unraveled Fates series, starting with Lunaria.
This whole world, the characters, the premise, the meddling gods, and the constant tragedy- is so, so, SO GOOD. I love Kara’s writing, the scene setting and prose is beautiful.

I was also promised smutty clouds. Did I know what the heck that meant? Not even slightly. And I going to tell you? Also no. Please read the smutty clouds 🤭

Thank you Kara Douglas for the ARC! As always, you smashed it out of the park 🤍

This one is a tragic gothic novella (**with NO HEA**) set in Kara’s Unraveled Fate series world but can be read as a standalone! Talk about the most utterly beautiful and devastatingly heartbreaking story! I feel like it’s hard for novellas to deliver a full story sometimes and also have you truly connect with the characters at the same time, but this was perfection! You get to follow the story of Aurora, who has full belief in the Dark God Nyx and prays to him even though it is taboo and risks her and her family’s safety. I was already a little in love with Nyx and it was so fun to learn more of his backstory and fall in love with him and Aurora. It truly makes so much make sense and also has me theorizing for what certain things can mean for what’s to come in the series 👀🤔

Thank you so much for this ARC! I’ve been obsessed with The Unraveled Fate Series from the moment I picked up Lunaria and was transported into its unique, magical world. Although Midnight Tempest can be read as a standalone, it does give us a backstory on some characters we’ve met throughout the series. This was a devastatingly beautiful story between a dark God and a fae who’s been told to despise him. As a forbidden connection grows, she can’t seem to stop praying to him. Especially when she believes he’s the only one to help save her town from a mysterious monster stealing those around her 🫣 I didn’t know how much I needed their story, and I ate up every second with Aurora and Nyx! I loved seeing a dark God yearn 😮‍💨 Kara knows how to write her MMCs. She will definitely make you fall for them all 😏 I knew this was not going to have an HEA, but I still wasn’t ready for those last few chapters 😭 My emotions were everywhere, but knowing how certain things occurred, has me even more excited about book 3!!

𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞: In a haunting tale of devotion and lies, the story of Nyx and Aurora is a romantic tragedy standalone novella. Characters originate from The Unraveled Fate Series, but it does not need to be read in order to read Midnight Tempest. This book contains scenes that may be triggering to some individuals and is intended for a mature audience. Please read at your own discretion.

“You’re a dream I never want to wake from.”

Midnight Tempest by Kara Douglas

Every midnight, someone vanishes. In Aurora’s village, fear has turned neighbors into enemies, and anyone suspected of worshipping the dark gods is punished. Aurora may be respected by her people, but she hides a dangerous truth: her growing bond with Nyx, the god everyone fears.

This novella wrecked me
“Tell me what I can do to keep you.”

My heart feels both full and shattered. I read the ending chapters at work, doing everything I could not to cry, and yet I wouldn’t trade the ache it gave me. It’s haunting, it’s gothic, it’s tender and tragic. This story isn’t about happily-ever-after's it’s about devotion, sacrifice, and finding beauty in the inevitable heartbreak. Kara made me feel every ounce of longing, pain, and love that unfolded on these pages.

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★/ 5

I was so fortunate to get to beta read this and then read it as an arc. Kara is one of my favorite authors and I have loved following the Unraveled Fate series. When I found out there would be a gothic novella, I knew I was going to be obsessed. This beautiful and heartbreaking story takes place in a village where worshipping a dark god is taboo and there’s a curfew at night after people go missing. The story is in first person POV from Aurora who is taking care of her siblings after their parents were taken, and Nyx who is a dark god.

The story is gothic and atmospheric. There’s a beautiful forbidden love story with a bit of spice as well. The story is a tragedy, so do not expect a happily ever after. I love that this can be read on its own or as part of the Unraveled Fate series. I think knowing what I know after Illuminance and Undying Lands, this story just elevated the whole series. Midnight Tempest can easily be read in a single sitting because it’s short and Kara’s writing draws you in.

**ARC Review**

Oh my heart. This was so heartbreakingly good. Just when I thought this book wasn’t going to get me like it’s been said to do, it did. This is definitely one to read after reading books 1-3 of the Unraveled Fates series because it includes a POV of someone you may or may not be a fan of and provides a whole other perspective. I can’t wait for more books to come out in the series!

Thank you Kara Douglas for providing me with this ARC in exchange for a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tropes:
- Dual Third-Person POV
- No HEA
- Forbidden Romance
- God x Fae

Quotes:
“As long as we can find the stars, we will never be alone.”

“People spend too much time being afraid to do what their heart desires.”

“The more Nyx watched Aurora, the more he realized that her heart was just as beautiful as she was.”

“Anywhere is better with you.” His voice had softened, his lips brushing against her ear. “You’re a dream I never want to wake from.”

Kara does it again!! She always tears my heart out in the best way, and this time she did it in just 200 pages! She’s just that talented!

I love this world and I have been wanting this tragic love story between the dark god Nyx (DREAMY FYI) and Aurora who is fae. This love is forbidden, which obviously the hottest trope. And I love that he hates everyone but her. The tension between them is delicious and it’s the perfect slow burn!! Their tragic story was sweet and sad, and does not end happily but I was very satisfied with how it ended! The balance between the plot and romance is perfect! This made me need a Lunaria reread immediately!!

This can be read as a standalone novella but I highly recommend reading the Unraveled Fates series first because it’ll just enrich your experience and those books are FANTASTIC! Books 3&4 are coming soon!!!

Thank you to the author for this early copy! Midnight Tempest releases next week!!

This book was absolutely amazing.
At first I was a little bit scared and also intrigued by the no HEA, but soon found out that this book doesn't need that.
This story follows Aurora oldest of three children. She takes responsibility for her younger siblings after the disappearance of their family. They live in a small and poor village and the villagers pray to the higher goddess for protection.
Nyx is a lesser god who has spent his life alone in his temple after everyone started calling him one of the Dark Gods and stopped praying for him.
The only person who keeps praying to him is Aurora after he rescued her one night and she started praying to him to show him her gratitude.
He then starts to spend more time with her and they find a way to each other.
There's this beautiful tragic story that kept me reading till the early hours of the morning.
I love Kara Douglas'swriting' the her MMC are to die for.
