ULTIMATE POWER WILL BE SOLD TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER

Silas has a lot on his plate. Not only does he have to juggle the affections of three peak family suitors, but he has to prepare for the evacuation of Galen, before the unspeakable evil from his vision strikes.
To do this, he's going to need some help from his friends, and a few hot ticket items at the multiverse's biggest auction, where only the most powerful even get a seat at the table.

But there's a fourth peak family vying for his attentions, and if they can't have him, nobody will. The auction holds the key to Galen's salvation, but if he's not careful, certain items up for bid could mean the end of Silas, the Earth, and everyone he holds dear.

Best book in the series so far. I have been very critical of many of the books of this series, prior to Book 7, for the author’s disjointed world building and over-reliance on contrivances and plot devices to end fights. Book 8, thankfully continues some of the repair to these issues that started in Book 7. It’s like a different writer took over honestly. I wonder if he’s got some editing help or maybe took some of the criticisms of his earlier books constructively, how novel (pun intended).

I said in my review of the last book, we finally had a thematic keel for the MC to build his character arc from focusing on his need to find another way than the system’s coldly genocidal farming mechanic. And we see the ribs of this keel being welded into place in this novel with how we’ve expanded this focus for his character. We also add to that the surprisingly great characters of the peak family scions, and their again surprisingly interesting arc of becoming friends, allies, and maybe more. Suddenly I’m invested in these characters and what’s going to happen to them more than I could have imagined. Even Lilly. Her face turn I did not see coming. Most authors use generic bad guys like her as flat, placeholders for the audience’s ire. But Lilly, got a face turn! And then even where that might be predictable, it doesn’t play out that way.

It’s just shocking to me how I went from basically hating this series, to actually really liking it.

Let me give an example of one of the changes I love. This book contains a great training arc with Selena, which is a great way to advance two things at once, their relationship and his evolving relationship with the scions, as well as his actual progression. We see the MC invest in progress. We are making a big deposit into the payoff bank. And then we as an audience get to withdraw that payoff satisfaction when we see our MC go postal on a couple thousand lycanthropes. That is fun!

Some people balk at overpowered characters or even overpowered moments in progression fantasy, as for some reason it’s seen as a bug when it’s always been a feature. Yes, it can be overused, like on say the Sylver Seeker series. But progression fantasy is a subset of power fantasy. We read these series for the escapism and the payoffs. We get to invest in a story about a place where good guys win. That’s not the way the real world works, sure. But it’s why we read them, to feel the vicarious wins of our MCs and characters. In that vein, being overpowered isn’t a bad thing in itself. What’s bad writing is using plot contrivances to try to level the playing field for the MC. That’s cheap. That’s what that feels like.

And this is what I love about authors who invest in the progression, in the training, and then give us a spectacle of watching the MC reap the rewards of that investment by kicking ass. That’s why we read these series.

I have to tip my hat to the author for turning this all around, where previously he made those mistakes, now he seems to be fully engaged in what makes this genre work. His plot is fairly complicated, definitely layered, but he does a great job of integrating those layers and advancing them appropriately while keeping me actively engaged in those developments.

I do have some very minor criticisms. I don’t like fourth wall breaks. I think they’re lame. Especially referencing Noobtown of all series, one of the worst series in this genre that does everything wrong in it. Lilly also gifts MC a cool new armor set, but it’s never mentioned again. Also, the newest skill he gets at the end, the rail gun thing, doesn’t make sense. A 12.5 ton mass going 0.99 the speed of light wouldn’t just destroy a city, it would destroy a planet, maybe even a star. The author has made little mistakes like this before, this one could be fixed by making the mass much less, like a bullet or something like that.

My first of two more serious criticisms is the skill sheet. Too much going on. The author did take steps to repair this issue of having too many skills. The problems it causes are first the audience doesn’t know what’s what. Second, the author has to invest in leveling these skills (if they level that is) which can come across as boring or forced. Of course the author could just ignore it as well which makes things awkward. He’s been doing both of these things, but finally he did start combining skills this book. That’s the fix for this issue. And he’s starting down that road, so not counting off for this.

The second more serious criticism is how much the author previously made getting to epic being extremely difficult, requiring pillars and shards and all this, now he’s got thousands of allies leveling mid fights. That’s doesn’t make sense. But nobody’s world building in this genre makes total sense, so not counting off for this either.

In review, Book 8 continues where Book 7 left off, as a real makeover for the series. It has the makings of having real potential. First five star book review for me in this series! But I don’t think I can add it to my series recommend list quite yet. Still too many bad books before, but we are headed in that direction and I’m crossing my fingers we get there.

A good continuation of the series. There is a lot of fighting, a lot of skill progression. The stakes are sky high for Sylas and his world. Almost too much, almost. That is one thing that would usually trigger my pet peeve but didn't for whatever reason this time. I like to put myself in the MCs place and since I am a huge fantasy person, there are all sorts of outlandish stories/powers that I am introduced to. I am willing to set aside my disbelief and just go with the rules of the world that are presented to me. My pet peeve comes when the rules that the author sets up for me are then broken. In this case, newly inducted worlds are given 100 years to acclimate. People who are trying to reach legendary tier take hundreds of years to do that. Silas's world has only been indoctrinated less than a year and his introductory period has been reduced to 10 years. He is also being pushed to hit Legendary tier as fast as possible. So, what usually takes hundreds of years, he is expected to do in a couple years? That would normally trigger my pet peeve. While I do wish the author would slow down, just a little bit, I am not that bothered by it this time.

There is one thing I picked up on this book that I didn't before and that is the integration of this author's other series into this one. Jay and the Forlorn make an appearance. They are for the Descend series. I also found out that Nico the dragon is from the Dragon Sorcerer series (which I haven't read yet). I do wonder if anyone know where Ryan came from. Is that from another series from this author, or from somewhere else?

Overall, I enjoyed this book and the series, and I am looking forward to the next one.

Why are pf courtships written so juvenile?

I ask myself this a lot. It's worse than Twilight, and that's with me acknowledging that this book is not a romance by any means. This series does have a romance subplot though, and I think it's a fair criticism of this element the author deems important enough to keep throughout the story.

So... Onward.

Asta. She was whatever. Nothing great. The writing between them wasn't stellar, but I largely suspected the author cannot write a compelling and believable romance. That was confirmed when she was dropped (thank goodness) for a bunch of essentially high noble families competing for MCs attention using a cast away daughter. I'm not against this trope. It's fine, even. But somehow, MC became even more juvenile. And these socially trained elites, the Iviest of Ivy League aristocrats sound like high schoolers, and they are twice MCs age, so young 40s. Plenty of life experience to sound educated. There was no effort to give them unique voices. Every suitor sounded identical.

The author DID do a good job tying this romance subplot into the actual plot. Almost no PF authors do this and it does matter.

Ignoring this gripe, or perhaps in spite of it, this is a solid 3 star series so far.

Silas saying "I can't have feelings for two women, that's not fair to them". Stop talking about it every other chapter in every book. Lately these books keep talking about the same things over and over with very little progression.

Silas is worried if he posses someone temporarily, everyone will hate him.

Silas finds a female opening a door for him strange. He's killed thousands of sapients and he gets put out of place when a female spends a door for him. Isn't he like 30+ years old, why does he act like he's a teenager still in many ways.

This series it's turning into a fever dream. Where Silas leads women on endlessly and talks about it endlessly because he can't make a decision. Silas risks the entire earth and his own life simply because he's afraid to have multiple girlfriends.

When Silas gets attacked by powerful foes, and those power foes deal collateral damage to surrounding sapients, he breaks down and blames himself, which is obviously ridiculous.

Silas constantly worries about pointless stuff. He says he can't spend a couple minutes looking for someone because more people might die but then proceeds to talk about his concerns for a couple minutes and comes to the conclusion he should look for that someone after all, just wasting time.

Silas is often making childish rash decisions. Then characters need to explain to him how his rashness is not a good idea. You'd think he'd learn after the first 10 times.

I think Silas brings up his dad too much. Like "Dad always said...". It makes him seem more like a child and less like an adult.

Very very good book!

It has a great story, fun budding romance, great action, incredible system, great main character, wonderful side characters, and great loot. In short it's a really really good book.

Even better it is clean with no profanity.

My one complaint is that the end felt rushed. It also didn't talk about the main character's relationship with Selena in the weeks following the final battle. Additionally, what was mentioned of his relationship with Lana didn't really makes sense either. As much of a role as his budding relationships with both Selena and Lana took in the majority of the book it was kind of a let down to all of a sudden not be told much about them. The story had concentrated on them quite a bit. So all of a sudden not to put the same emphasis on those relationships was jarring and a bit of a let down.

Despite that I really enjoyed the book and I'm looking forward to the next one!

This is an enjoyable series, and I liked this book. It feeels like the quality of the series is improving. I like the justification behind the system, and the escalating dangers while getting stronger. All around, good stuff!

But I have one big request -- please tone down all the fourth-wall breaks! One is acceptable. You've let me know the author liked some other series. Ok, fine, I can look past that. One break is ok. Back to the story.

But when you're on the dozenth shout-out to some other fictional universe, it's too much. Now it break immersion, stops the story, and I remember which series has the Puma Checks, and which has the Elf Tits, and think about John Wick. Now I'm thinking about all those other stories, and not thinking about this one.

I like this story. I'd like to stay here a bit, and not think about the others! (I'm not inteterested in Pokemon)

Interesting, made me question where it was going a few times.

So yah, this one made me wonder a few times how things would play out. For a good part of the book it seemed like Silas was headed into harem territory, which would have made me drop the book on principal. But by the end of it, it seems that won't be happening. But there are definitely some fun things in store!

Lots of upgrades and powerups, a few that have me squinting at them because I'm not sure how I feel. But the action is good as always and things are continuing to build up nicely.

I do have to say that I'm curious how long the series is planned for. Because id guess that Silas hits legendary next book, but then there's a long way to go from there to ascendant or beyond. So unless we get a big time skip or some other power level shenanigans I expect at least 5-6 more books. Guess we will see!

It's great 👍

This is why the best books yet so much action adventure. Lots of things are revealed very well written. If you like the previous books in the series, you're going to enjoy this. If you didn't like the previous books of the series, I didn't know why you're reading this, but you're going to have a bad time. I'm not going to tell you any plot points because I really feel that would take away from the book for you. But the author has done another. Great job here. There's lots of characterization and character growth. Silas actually gets a proper love life. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series. I hope this helps. I apologize for any spelling errors I'm writing this review with voice to text

This is still the superior LitRPG series in my humble opinion

Its strength is in the engaging, even enchanting, side characters & the depth of development given to their narratives as well as the protagonist, Silas Renner. This is a tale of so many facets & yet maintains a strong focus on the core story.
The dizzying power growth, whilst rapid, is still reasonably incremental & there are so few continuity errors that it's hard to fault the intellect of the author.
If you like this genre, don't hesitate to start this series from the beginning & devour it. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. If not as much as I have been; maybe you've more history with this style of literature, but I simply can not imagine you won't be engaged by this fantastical "Welcome to the Multiverse".

This book felt like a great addition to the series, but some pushed felt rushed.

What in other books took a long time to develop and get to enjoy, in this one we see the MC get about three power boosts in what are, essentially, montages and time-skips. Not badly done, but you could tell the boost was necessary for the next hurdle.

We're also entering the "outgrowing the system, so it's starting to sounds more like fantasy than litrpg" stage of power; which isn't my favorite, but I hope it doesn't tip over.

Also, please, for the love of good, don't push for that harem. It's already toeing the edge there, please don't go full harem.

4.5 stars. The MC really needs to pull that stick out of his ass and bang both of the hotties who are vying for his attention. By making him a prude it injects delay and unnecessary grief that would be easily resolved by forming a throuple. There is so much other stuff going on that this seems a waste of characters; if you want to avoid another harem situation, just don't throw a lot of women at him.

I somehow managed previously to skip this book and go straight from 7 to 9; that explains why I felt I was missing some things when I read 9 a month or so ago. Anyway, caught up and can move onto book 10 when it arrives.

Great Book, Immature MC

I really enjoy this series overall. It's got great characters, story arca, world building, etc. Now if only the MC had a little maturity and a spine. Runs out like a rebellious teenager on a planet he knows wants him dead and almost gets himself killed for a little bit of information he could have gotten by just asking. We're also eight books in now and he's still waffling all over the place with his romances in what's theoretically a harem series? Just get it done and move on. Or stop talking about it if it's never going to happen.

This book has Silas attending an auction outside of the earth to get the things he needs to save the people of Galen. Silas spends time training in a time dilation with Selena which gives him the opportunity to build upon his skills and strengthen his relationship with Selena. Silas faces down an ascendant tier being and walks away even though there is complete and utter devastation left in the wake of this battle. Silas's relationship with Lana continues to progress but not nearly as much as Selena's. Lily seems to come through as an ally but things take a turn for the worse with a surprising twist. It'll be interesting to see what becomes of that. In addition to dealing with all of the stuff with Galen, Silas has three incurions from the Malfon family he has to handle.

Overall, lots of action and adventure, the typical progress fantasy elements and game mechanics. Some romantic elements are also evident in this book.

Nonstop Action Rollercoaster

Oh what an amazing rollercoaster ride this latest book of the Multiverse series is.
Sean Oswald has outdone himself. Keep an eye out for those cameos and cross-series references.
This clearly is hood best series yet (and I enjoyed the many books I read by him).
I’m looking forward to the next which can’t come soon enough to see how Silas’ journey continues.

If you have not yet, go and pickup book one and thank me later.

Great variety of fun

This book weaves many different and interesting types of stories together. There is large scale politics, world saving battles, developing friendships, and inter-antagonist backstabbing. It's a lot of fun in each part but even more fun when mixed together. It pays off some setups from the previous books while continuing others.

The character work continues to be very well done and the world building continues to be interesting as well.

A compelling story

This book sucked me right in from the start and I didn't put it down until I had finished it. I feel like this story is chugging along firmly at a pace that really shows off the scope of the world we are in. Multiple systems and high level players are all appearing and tilting the scales in ways I'm sure we won't understand until they are revealed in epic fashion. Can't wait!

Hmm

I dearly enjoyed the previous entries in this series. I read them in a few days off coveted effort. This one took months. It was far less enjoyable to me, for several reasons. Most of those would require spoilers, but I'll say the plucky underdog we know and love was more unkillable than i cared for. I'm guessing I'll get to further novels in series, but my excitement is no where near the level it has been in past.

Entertaining Read

This series is just so good, entertaining and engaging at the same time with a wonderful universe build.
The action and adventures gel well with the overall storyline and who doesn't want to save Earth and be a hero. Now the bad news is I now have to wait months till the next one as this left me on tenderhooks.

Some fun combat, but there were also parts that dragged. A problem with increasing power is that everything becomes bigger, which makes descriptions longer.

Still gonna keep reading.

Another good entry

Another solid entry into the series. I’m quite enjoying the story, but Silas can get a bit annoying at times with his inability to man up and just pick a direction. Didn’t distract from the story though and am excited for the next!

Good story, writing could be better

A three might but harsh and maybe I should have given a four but it’s just the monotony of his writing style that I don’t like. LitRPG novels always have strong stories but writing that leaves much to be desired
