Khushwant Singh, (Punjabi: ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ, Hindi: खुशवंत सिंह) born on 2 February 1915 in Hadali, Undivided India, (now a part of Pakistan), was a prominent Indian novelist and journalist. Singh's weekly column, "With Malice towards One and All", carried by several Indian newspapers, was among the most widely-read columns in the country.
An important post-colonial novelist writing in English, Singh is best known for his trenchant secularism, his humor, and an abiding love of poetry. His comparisons of social and behavioral characteristics of Westerners and Indians are laced with acid wit.
Untold Love stories from India has 13 different stories which will melt your heart. Each story has its own unique perspective which makes this book different. Each story has its own depth and holds the power to warm one's heart with love. The pace of stories is good. Some stories were too good with a strong message. The language used by the author is simple and easy. I loved how he narrated each and every story. One can easily relate to them. The author described many emotions like love, hatred, struggle in a crisp way. I liked Sifan and Ratan's story the most. The writing style of the author is explicit and gripping. He has shared some precious stories which outline Love in an extra felicitous way. The message of embracing the reality more is conveyed beautifully by the author. There were so many characters, and each one of them had a unique character and had a vital role to play.
I loved the cover and the title of the story. It's attractive.
Overall it's a good book. Light, easy and a quick read. Like reading romance? go for it.
I started out as a reviewer for this script; the author wanted my opinion. My first read held me captive. Simple stories of love - raw, and without the usual sugar coating. I went to snip them into shape and then published the book! I would recommend the book to all those who have been in love - those fortunate to have their love by their sides as well as those whose love met a different fate. In these pages are lovers in all garbs, from dacoits to doctors, prostitutes to enlightened souls.
These are stories that the author picked up in his conversations with old and young people from all over India. Stories of lovers these people knew or had heard of or perhaps just made up to tell a story. I liked them, and hope you will too!
🌲This book named Untold Love stories from India is a collection of 14 short love stories from different corners of India like Punjab , Shimla , Mumbai , etc that are less known or rather not even known outside the boundary of respective families and friends. They are collected together and now authored by Khushwant Singh. . . 🌲To start with the stories are mostly based either few centuries back or in British India . The stories are quite different than each other but the fact that they potrait Love in such selfless manner is really liked my me.They were based on serious yet realistic plots and I did connect with the beautiful protagonists in most of the stories. They not only potraite Love as sacred but also focus on the plight of People and their families during caste riots , shallow society ideals and even heart wrenching India Pakistan divide during 1947. . 🌲Love thrives beyond caste , religion , profession , creed and every thing ! It contacts souls and souls dwell deeper than the skin or any thing. . 🌲The narration style was flawless.I felt the narration was actually more smooth, beautifully interconnected and commendable more than the previous book that I read lately named Cofessions of the Virgin brides. . 🌲Short stories are my all time go to reads. And what I like about Khushwant Singh 's books are that they are quite different from comtemporary writers now a days. He focuses on non conventional topics as well as on social evils and taboos. . 🌲I will give this book 4.3/5 happily ! 🌲Check my blog as I have posted more pictures. .

These stories are rather unheard of, love stories that are not labeled as great yet these will shake your ground and move you to tears. This book contains 14 love stories, that are unique and depicts love in a way never seen or heard before. Khushwant Singh proved again that only a few pages are enough to create a powerful impact in the mind of the readers. Lastly, thanks to the author for writing these stories and helping the readers to come to terms with the atrocities that the lovers faces as a courtesy of our so-called society.
It is a collection of beautiful poignant short stories of love birds and their tragic ends. All the stories have the edge to easily leave readers like me in stance. Each story hold the depth to be made into a full length novel. Only thing that pained me more than tragedies in the stories was the fact that each story ends in just few pages. I craved for more of bold narration and little stagnancy as to me stories just started and ended, long before i could hold all the happenings in rumination. But I guess, that's what maybe author aimed for. For readers to be left humbled, awed, discomforted so that they embrace their reality more.
How I felt reading it: I stopped to take a moment after each story. Because i kept wondering how many of such stories so pure, so full of grace and love are there lost in voyage of time and untold by any sort of ink. I loved all the travel places references which author suggested his readers to visit.
Writing style: Felt like i was listening to a story rather than living it. Writing style, narration - Nothing strikingly different or admirably unique. Language- Plain, approachable.
// There's only One happiness in life To love and to be loved // We all have heard about the much celebrated love stories of Sohni - Mahiwal, Romeo - Juliet, Heer - Ranjha but great love stories happen all the time and this book we'll meet people who knew only love and nothing else.
There are total 13 stories and from the first story till the last, I had tears in my eyes, tears because the love is so pure, tears because they only wanted to love and be loved and couldn't have that, tears because we all know the horrific time the partition of India was, tears because a father killed gis daughter for his honor, a mother gave poison to her own daughter, tears because greed, social pressure, and religion are more important than life.
There are no great quotes in the book but you will feel for all the characters, it's written in simple language but heavy on emotion, you'll feel as if it's happening in front of your eyes and it flows easily. I'd recommend this to everyone 😊🤗.
OMG!! My heart was bleeding and crunching and crying after reading every single story in this book.
So the book is the collection of short love stories. And I am soo much glad of reading those unrealised, loved and tragic love stories. I loved the way author has narrated every single story with all twist and turns where I could able to feel the love and pain and suffering and sacrifice those lovers would have done.
The only thing I came up with is I couldn't find any justice with those lovers in the story as falling in love is fighting to death. But how anyone can change when it's a true story, a real story.
Untold love stories from India is the book based on love stories.. I have read this book and it's amazing...All the love stories are too good...All the 14 stories states that How love is precious but no one gets his / her love...Amazing book i found ☺️✌️
Untold Love Stories from India is a collection of 14 short stories with varying themes of love, all based in India.
Every story had different characters of distinct backgrounds and religions but a common theme, Love. The writing is so eloquent it keeps you going from one page to the other. I love reading short stories and this one definitely is a great collection. My favourite story: I have two. 1. Allah Khan & Gurbani: firstly, for the title 🙈 Then, for the elements it had which were very prevalent in the times it is set in, from pure love to hatred, greed to sacrifice and that ending 2. Mehmood Raza & Ebaadat: The historical element in it made me think about it even after the book ended, it is definitely a story of 3 saints and now I wish to really visit that place 🙈
Every story had an element of peace in chaos which was wonderful Its a short book of just 120 pages but is full of inspiration! Spread love, be good and let live 💙
3.5🌟 This is a book that is not artificial. I personally am not a fan of love stories, but this book holds some pure love stories which have not been sugarcoated with unnecessary, exaggerated descriptions. That is one thing that I really appreciated about the book. I had actually thought of this book as a light read with some good love stories but it was not so. It is indeed dark and at times, gruesome. But that did not disappoint me because these things do actually happen still now in many corners of our so-called “Modern” society. I believe these were real life accounts of some lovers who had to keep their own lives at stake just because they fell in love, because “society” came hunting for them. Some really grave issues of our society have been highlighted through these suffering lovers which must be looked into.
As the description says, you will not get any “fanfares” or “thrills” but you will surely get moved by the sufferings of these people whose only crime was that they had dared to fall in love.
So overall I liked the book, and you guys can read these stories if you want to know the trivial reasons that still continue to lead to gruesome consequences, because this book sums up those harsh realities. Although there is a trigger-warning, in case you are not comfortable with physical assaults and murders, then you better avoid the book, but otherwise you can surely give it a try.
The thing that I did not like is that the stories are very short and less descriptive. Had the descriptions been more vivid, the intensity could have been felt more.

IF I COULD REVIEW IT IN A SINGLE LINE: Poignant, crisp, raw and beautiful THE REVIEW: 13 untold love stories shadowed over by the clichéd romance novels of age old forlorn courtship that outdates many others but what Khushwant Singh aims to achieve with this book is beyond appreciated. Stories of sorrow, separation, detachment, yearning, desire and above all a love strong enough to rebound through the ages is everything one can hope to read from the book. Each story is better than the previous and yet as good as the next, crisp raw writing without the use of heavy words and a continuous flow without a rather morbid use of itinerary that would hide the rather simplistic aspect of every story as though through the heart of the common man. Every story has themes across the lines of country, caste, religion, color and above all the fact that not every liberal country is cordial towards love. So many of us are fortunate enough to have been born into families that support and at a time that is kind to the mere concept of love but what about the fallen others who died in the name of love without the power surrounding them. We may not know them but they'll forever be named has the pillars of what now stands as the country of love. Every story will hold you true and bold, they'll be etched in your mind, you may forget their names but you won't forget the way they died or survived in the name of love. The writing is simple with no big words and well though it does add a certain charm to it but I'm still forever the kind who loves a challenging read. This is a short crisp and to the point read for a mere two hours which is good for we today have absolutely no time. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A man who dares to dream while he lives in his realities, Khushwant Singh has donned many a cap— starting out as a spoilt brat, till the day he found his true calling and became a business motivator and writer. This is his third book after Simple Ways to Make More Money and Unanswered Prayers. He lives in New Delhi with his childhood sweetheart and wife, Harpreet, and his precious seven-year old son, Kharag.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Untold Love Stories from India by Khushwant Singh is a collection of various love stories from all across India with the sole theme of "unrequited love" flowing through each of them. Ever fallen in love with the story of Heer-Ranjha, Sohni-Mahiwal or Mirza-Sahiban? Ever thought about how stories similar to those can exist between us—in our society, in our surroundings, in our workplace? Well, this book is a collection of such stories. The people mentioned inside are not as famous as Heer and Ranjha, but what they have endured all their life is nothing different.
Indians have believed in honor-killings since a long time. And after reading this book, I realized how deep rooted that thought is. Through the medium of this book, Singh brought to light many such incidents where people are killed because of the society. But that wasn't it. He also brought to light incidents where people cannot get together because of their own mistakes, in the present or the past.
Thus, each story had two things highlighted within itself—love and death—two themes often highlighted in unrequited love. The stories talk about the author's point-of-view as he heard about each one of them. Hence, they were mere oral stories, now made immortal forever!
Personally, though, I am not a fan of love stories. Unlike most, I have never had a soft corner for any of them and I guess, that is what made this book a lot special for me. Yes, some of the stories inside were a little unbelievable but they were all tragedies (and I have a soft corner for tragedies, even if I don't exactly like romances).
The book is a light read, talking about love in its various forms, and solidifying the idea of unrequited love in the reader's mind with many examples of it. I really liked the way the stories were told It felt like someone was actually standing in front of me and narrating them to me. Of course, speaking them out loud helped. However, what bothered me is that these stories lacked descriptions. I mean, they were so short that I didn't even know when they were over. Perhaps this is why I wasn't exactly moved by any of them—they just weren't shared with me for enough time to be moved by them. I mean, had they been a little detailed, I would have had more time to get to know the characters and be with them. Maybe, that would have made a lot of difference.
Love stories have been favorites since the times we started experiencing emotions in our lives. Love stories always hold a special spot in everyone’s life. It has shattered some hearts and mended some barriers in relations. Love is more than an emotion, it is an experience planned for each one of us by the Almighty (if you believe in one). For some of us, love is crap and it doesn’t matter to us in any circumstances. However, for some of us, love is prayer holding our beloved together. The broken hearts have zillions of stories to pen down about love and beloved. Every love story has a drama and spice added to it, be it fictional or the non-fictional world. We all have, had or will pass this phase of falling in and out of love. There are different love stories from across the country penned down by the author. These stories are more heart-wrenching than the one of Heer-Ranjha or even equivalent to that one. Revenge, heart-break, honour, religion and various factors have been well-depicted in the collection of love stories. Partition of India-Pakistan dwelled love stories taking lives of lovers across the borders by their loved ones. Out of all the love stories mentioned in the book, Captain Alec and Suraiya Kaif was my favorite one. A special reason to choose this one was the strong emotion of a fearless girl standing in front of a defence personnel. The emotion of forgiveness and falling in love with the innocence shaping their love story. A happy-ending to the love story might be a myth… but reading through the silk route of love and affection is pure bliss. The feeling of being in love is great, where people don’t care about the world. The author has well-depicted the stories from old times to the present. It has been an immense pleasure reading through some of the great love stories from the land of India.
“Love is the only prayer; and lovers the only saints”
I have read 4 books by Author Khushwant Singh and this is my 5th book by this Author. In this book 'Untold Love Stories from India' Author has shared 13 different short stories from different parts of India. All these stories are unique and never heard before and that's why Author rightly named this book as Untold Love Stories from India.
In this book, there are heart wrenching stories of people who lost their lives for their true love. Who found love in the times when people were against inter religion marriage and were killed mercilessly for loving someone from other religion. In these love stories, people did not care about the social status of the person, the only thing that mattered to them was their feeling of love. They loved each other with all their heart that no boundary of religion, caste or class could keep them apart.
I absolutely enjoyed reading every story as in each story Author shares a unique love story which I don't think can be seen or heard in recent times. Lovers are selfless in these stories and all they long for is love and togetherness of their beloved. Stories of pure love and their feelings are very well expressed by the Author . After the end of some stories, I felt like crying for these lovers and I also felt angry for the people who were against love. At the same time, I felt admiration for the great lovers of those times who supported each other when they needed each other the most. One of my favourite stories from this book is of Sapna and Mukesh. I absolutely loved the character of Dr Mukesh.
I liked the book cover, the title is apt. I really liked the writing style of the Author. The book is perfect for a quick read and I am sure every reader will love reading them. I would like to give 5/5 Stars.
This book feels like finding a diary filled with other people's love stories. It doesn't feature famous people or dramatic adventures. Instead, it shares quiet accounts of regular people who loved deeply, often without being loved back.
The writer collected these stories, heartfelt conversation comes through on every page. You meet everyday heroes—the kind you might pass on the street—whose greatest battles were fought in the silence of their own hearts. Their struggles and their quiet longing feel incredibly real.
There's a beautiful simplicity to these tales. They speak of dreams, first butterflies in the stomach, and the hope that feels like a rainbow. But they also don't hide the pain that comes with loving someone you cannot have. The book shows that uncertainty is a part of love, and that this can be both cruel and beautiful.
Reading it is a calm, reflective experience. It doesn't try to shock you with twists, but instead invites you to recognize those same feelings in yourself. It’s a book that makes you feel connected to all the other hearts that have ever loved and ached.
If you believe that true love stories aren't always the ones with a happy ending, but the ones that are felt deeply, you will find a special kind of comfort in these pages. It’s a gentle, honest look at the most human emotion of all.
Untold Love Stories From India written by Khushwant Singh. This is a small collection of 14 short stories. Each tale is about ordinary people the boy next door, the girl who lives down the lane and the love that never quite finds its way. The stories are told in plain language, so they feel like a chat over a cup of elaichi adrak chai.
The biggest idea in the book is that destiny is uncertain. Love can be sweet, but it can also be painful and unrequited. The characters struggle with caste, religion, colour and the fact that not every place welcomes love. Some stories like Ganga Nazir and Singh Khan or Dayaram Rukhsana show how big differences can keep two hearts apart while others, such as Captain Suraiya and Alec Kaif, hint at love that crosses borders.
There are no grand adventures or flashy drama just everyday emotions, the small moments that stay with you. Reading them feels like sitting with the author, listening to real life love stories that warm you even when the mountains are cold.
In short Untold Love Stories From India is a gentle, heartfelt read. It reminds us that love is everywhere, sometimes fulfilled, often not and that the simple, unspoken feelings are the ones that stay with us the longest. If you enjoy quiet, real life romance, give it a try.

Untold Love Stories from India by Khushwant Singh is a collection of thirteen true love stories from all over India, that talk about how love is not always a happy ending.
The stories are of various times- from pre-independence times to the modern times. The book talks about unadulterated lesser known love stories of true lovers who if didn't live together, died together. The author has picked the best stories to string the right chords in the hearts of the readers. I loved the book. The book is a perfect, light read for romance fans. Singh has surely proved his skill as an author with this heartwarming short book.
The best and the worst thing about destiny is Uncertainity.
These never before told stories of lovers and their unrequited love sprout the Godliness of emotions, with a bitter side of the pills of struggle and longing for the loved one.
Untold Love Stories from India by @khushwant singh is a collection of 14 different ancient love stories. The stories didn't have unnecessarily detailing and is simple and smooth. These stories so beautifully plotted and really end up in tears. The stories picked up by author are so amazing and unknown to us.These stories proves that love is above all religions, educational background etc. There are so much twist and turns in these stories and are so heartbreaking. They fought for their love, but couldn't find any justice.I like happy endings, like those in Bollywood and Cindrella's Story. But overall this book is just amazing with amazing love stories from ancient to modern times. This book consists of 13 different love stories form India which are just so beautiful!! The language is simple and easy to understand . And each story has its own sparkle of defining love. After reading the book i felt like I wanted more of such lovely stories. The stories were neider too slow nor too fast moving. In those 3 4 pages the story gave us enough to feel melancholy at end of every story. And the best part about this book was that the love birds in the storys were realistic and just the people u find around you and not like romance novels we read! I wish i could read a book with happy endings love stories just like these had not so happy ones!! I will definitely suggest you to give this book a read. Even if you are not a romantic novel reader, do give this book a try it will definitely melt your heart away.
Its actually a 3.5 star read for me. Its a compilation of stories from across India ranging from the early 20th century to the late 20th century. Its unrequited love stories. And most have the recurring theme of the lovers being either killed , or driven to suicide or insanity because of the ever present “family honour”. But one story struck me hard This one is set during the time of Partition, and the lovers , Dayaram and Rukhsana are killed, not by goons or their fathers or uncles or such, but poisoned by Rukhsanas mother, who gave a small tiffin of the prasaad laced with poison. The aftermath of their eloping and their death, the way their bodies were unceremoniously tossed away, and the plight of Dayaram’s family after the elopement in the shadow of partition violence, made it all the more macabre.

Thank you author for the review copy. The book is a collection of 13 short stories from different parts of India. All of these are rarely known. The title totally justifies with the stories. The stories are simple. I am not a huge fan of love stories but I really liked the book as it didn't have any sugar coating. The book travels through different timelines with different people. The stories are small, which makes it an easy and quick read. The stories are unique as they are hardly known to anyone. The stories are about people who struggled for their love or even were killed for their love. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who likes to read romance genre. I don't like love stories a lot so, I gave it 4 stars.
'Untold Love Stories From India' is a collection of love stories. The stories have emotions like separation, pain, loss, love, etc. The stories have sad endings and some even made me cry. The language used is easy and lucid. The cover looks extremely pretty. It is a light and quick read- best for love story lovers. The stories are not repetitive and have a charm of their own. My favourite stories among all of them were story no. 1, 3, 7 and 10. Although, I felt the writing in every story was a little monotonous. I felt every story. They touched my heart. I had very less expectations from this book but it proved me wrong. It's beautiful. It's emotional. I am in love with the author's books. And I can't wait for more.
If you're looking for happy endings in love, this is not the book for you, other than that the short stories are well written, capturing some aspect of the raw realities of love.
The ideal audience for this book would definitely be adults though. Happy Reading 😊
Untold Love Stories from India by Khushwant Singh is a collection of 13 love stories from across India. How is this book different from any other love story? This book is unique because these stories are real, raw, unheard of and hence aptly titled ‘Untold Love Stories from India’.
The author has comprised this beautiful collection with handpicked stories from all across the county. Stories that are as enigmatic as the love stories of Heer-Ranjha, Laila-Majnu, and Romeo-Juliet. These are stories that speak of the love of a common man, no thrills or fanfare attached but still have the power to touch the depths of your heart.
Stories in this book speak of love from pre-independence era to modern India, stories that step over the boundaries of religion, the hierarchy of the rich and the poor, the educated and uneducated class.
The first story of Ganga Singh and Naazir khan is pure love. This story lays the best foundation for the book. It prepares the readers for the beautiful journey ahead. The story of Rukhsana and Dayaram is a tale personal to the author. The story of Rosy and Satya Singh is like a saga straight out of a movie. The climax of the story of Sapna and Mukesh shall leave you silenced.
The stories are sad and heart-wrenching. They have the power to warm your hearts like a blanket. The author has done complete justice to the book by providing the right amount of detailing to each story. Every story is different from the other. The emotions are beautifully expressed.
This is one of the most beautiful books I have read. It is perfect for a quick read. If you love to read romance, then it is a must read for you. If you do not like this genre, trust me you shall still enjoy this book.
