★★★★ ½ ! Grayson (stand-alone). University grad student is smitten by the handsome owner of rundown home, but his mental illness causes him anxiety over losing his home!

“It’s a struggle to achieve balance. It can be a futile search for the absolute truth or an endless certainty of lies.”

Grayson (stand-alone) opens up to university nursing grad student Angela Roberts, Angie applying for a job cleaning out an old home. She is interviewed by the owner’s 19 year old trust fund baby son, Charles. The home in question is in shambles with books, art and furniture everywhere. She is given strict instructions to never venture out to the 2nd floor where owner lives.

Imagine her shock with her curiosity gets the better of her and she encounters the “old man” masturbating EXCEPT he is not an old man but an exquisitely handsome, in shape, virile and very well-endowed Grayson Whitmore, heir and owner of investment firm, Global Systems.

“The shaft was heavy and thick, and was probably the largest I’d ever seen in real life. I stared avidly as it slid in and out of his fist…”

After the shock of their initial encounter and embarrassment settles a flirty friendship is formed. Angie learns that Grayson in addition to being a recluse suffers from schizophrenia and paranoia. But with her being a nursing student that does not intimidate her. Grayson however has severe trust issue and is tormented by fear and anxiety that his home is being taken away from him.

With time neither can deny their insane attraction despite their age difference. But upon acting on it confusion and conflicted emotions plagues them. In addition to Grayson’s hesitation and apprehension there are darker forces waiting in the sidelines. What is their agenda? Who does not want them together and why?

Ultimately this is a love story about fighting one’s demons, embracing the good in each other and risking it all for love!

Grayson Whitmore is a remarkable hero. I heart everything about him! Eight words to describe Grayson: Smart, resourceful, loyal, persistent, conflicted, paranoid, despondent and nurturing.

 photo GraheBSbysb_zps23b33db6.gif

Eight words to describe Angela Roberts, Angie: Sweet, smart, resourceful, nurturing, loyal, determined, desperate and complex.

Grayson is a suspenseful, erotic and beautifully told tale. It handles the aspect of mental illness with realism and consideration. Story ends perfectly. That epilogue is 5 stars!!

Excellent story-telling! Suspenseful and insightful plot! Compelling sexual tension followed by scorching sex scenes! Spectacular ending!

“I loved when he looked at me that way. It was something like awe and disbelief mingled with tender reverence.”

2.5 disappointed stars ☆

This book is an age-gap romance between 24-year old Angie, and 44-year old Grayson (a man dealing with mental illness).

The premise caught my interest, but the execution didn't live up to my expectations:

➡️ The writing was choppy and the characters weren't developed, so I couldn't connect to them at all. There was hardly much interaction between them, and in some parts it felt like I was reading a chapter summary instead of the actual chapter.

➡️ The story felt too insta-lovey, which does not fit in here at all because Grayson suffers from schizophrenia and has major trust issues.

➡️ Their connection was mostly about Angie being attracted to him and them having sex, and their intimate scenes? O. M. G. Let me just give y'all an example:

My taste buds exploded with his deliciously salty taste as he dumped a few drops of precum onto my tongue.

Dumped? DUMPED???? *ugh*

➡️ I hated that this author portrays Grayson's 19-year old son Charles as the villain of the story. He is supposed to be this ruthless criminal mastermind, but frankly he was just a greedy little shit. All he does is leer at Angie's breasts and says stuff like:

“Unless you are willing to get on this table, spread your fucking legs, and give me some of what you so willingly gave my father, this discussion is over.”

Even thinking of a 19-year old saying this makes me shudder with rage and disgust!

➡️ The worst part about this was the heroine. She was such a hypocrite and ready to judge everyone around her. Also, I can't get over the fact that she kept mentioning that she had huge breasts. What was the point of mentioning it more than 10 times?
What am I supposed to do with that information?
\(〇_o)/

For all she said about being a nurse and wanting to take care of others, she lacked the basic knowledge about dealing with a person suffering from mental illness. She spied on Grayson and kept pestering him to push his boundaries, even when he was clearly uncomfortable.

Most of this book was a 2 star read for me, with some rare 3 star moments like this thrown in:

“I’m on your side, Grayson. Always.”
“I—I can’t make any promises, Angie. I don’t know what the future holds. Right now I can only take it one day at a time—one step at a time.”
“As long as you allow me to take those steps with you. That’s all I want.”
I felt his smile as he buried his face in my neck. His wet hair brushed against my cheek, smooth and silky.
“I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

After reading the premise and seeing so many positive reviews, I'd really hoped to like this so much more than I did. All I can say is that I'm disappointed.

* * * 3/4 Spoiler Free
I happened to have read Lisa Eugene a while ago and it was a welcomed experience. She likes to mix stories with very strong men, inquisitive women, and some type of suspense, sometimes with a medical backdrop. This book did all of that plus more. It exposed a subject matter which has touched all of us one way or another...Mental Illness.

We all may have known someone who has suffered. We may have been related or worked with someone who has these battles every day. What is difficult for our society is the acceptance these aliments are just another type of illness and can be treated and cared for, too. It might mean different types of ways with medication management and coping techniques... but aren't all illnesses managed in this way...and why is it so common for people to react differently, cruelly, and in such a harsh uncaring way...

I personally think it is fear...fear of the unknown, the concern we are all a possible candidate at one time or another...and these fears cause many to not educate themselves in the advancements of causes and treatment for these illnesses.

I commend Ms. Eugene for creating a book that highlights and describes many of the issues of this subject. She created a romance between Angie, a nurse/grad student, and Grayson, a man 20 years her senior who had a serious mental illness.
She is hired to clean and organize this townhouse by the son. He says it is to make the house safe and she is to stay clear of his father. The house has years of books, crates and other things piled high in a "hoarders" fashion. Angie is in need of cash...this job will be paying it.

This gave these two people a way to meet; be aware of their habits and quirks and then little by little allows a fragile trust. There was a rapid desire for each other but because of the way these two characters came together and the circumstances, I set it aside.

We were given insight into Grayson's condition and how very serious it was... this was not a sugarcoated-all-will-be-easy plot point. We were given the harsh realities of what he saw and battled...how it could spiral out of control in a moment...countered, though, with how he was smart, able to run a multi-million dollar company, engaging and wickedly sly and funny. He had learned to compensate in his own way...It also presented his sexuality like everyman in his wants and needs...

However, he was doing these things on his own due to past experiences with meds that were over-prescribed, mixed with others which countered the results and with side effects too difficult to live with. These issues are very common... or were in the past. New inroads in treatments for all kinds of illnesses happen and need to be explored.

With Grayson's interaction with Angie, a friendship/relationship developed...carefully. It was perfect she had her nurse's training to understand his illness and give her the perspective to be there and open to what he would finally share with her. His history was not pretty...mental illness stemmed from his father... he experienced it first hand. He then suffered the loss of his wife... the one person who was there for him. When he lost her, it caused him to isolate himself from his son and others...

Angie has her own back story of a loving family and little sister who is looking to grow up far too fast. Angie is shown to be strong in working intense hours to help support herself so later she can assist her parents.

Angie is the perfect vehicle to fall for the man locked inside his head, to see him and love him. He connects with this woman and through the story we are given, we experience more than just the romance. We experience the fight for what is right and want it to succeed.

Mental Illness is a disease... it should not have a stigma or be treated as something to hide. There are so many inroads in medications and treatments which could help if those who are experiencing these challenges receive the assistance they need. But part of the reason those who need these programs and assistance do not reach out is fear...fear of their relationships with their families, their careers, with others. Hopefully, times will change.

This was an interesting way to experience a solid romance and insight into an important subject. The author has information in the back of the book for those who wish to connect with the many organizations which help.

Angie is a twenty-four year old nursing student in need of extra income when she sees an advertisement on the school bulletin board to clean out a house. She responds to the ad and meets Charles. Charles is a nineteen year old, self entitled asshat. He hires Angie based on her appearance alone, and she begins working almost immediately.

Grayson was diagnosed with schizophrenia at a young age, despite his condition he ran a successful business, married, and had a child. With medication he was able to live a pretty normal life, until his wife passed away. Since then he has basically become a recluse and is highly paranoid.

Grayson and Angie meet and there is an immediate attraction, but Grayson is paranoid and doesn’t believe Angie’s intentions are pure. The story progresses with Angie creating ways to see Grayson, this part of the story is cute and I enjoyed their banter.

This story deals with real issues, and I actually really enjoyed those parts of the story. While I am not an expert the feelings and actions felt real, and my heart broke for Angie and Grayson. I also really enjoyed the forbidden aspect, he is twenty years older then her, wealthy, but he is also mentally unstable - it is a very unique concept and I love different books.

I really enjoyed this book, but I think I could have loved it without some of the details regarding Angie’s excitement. I also felt the sex scenes and the mention of how large Angie’s boobs were a little over done. The ending was a little rushed and I wish the book flowed better, but in the end I really enjoyed it and recommend it to others because it is so unique.

Very unique and well-written book with atypical storyline and very different male protagonist.

I didn’t read many stories with character(s), who has mental illness, but I know a bit about schizophrenia through my friends (a father of my good acquaintance has it).

And I think the main message of this book, that such people are still part of our society and deserve a normal life and above all love and family, was loud and clear.

Overall Opinion: I actually enjoyed this much more than I had expected. It was surprising pretty hot! I really liked Grayson's character, and I appreciated that Angie wasn't intimidated by the signify the age gap (which was partially due to her being fed up with the immaturity of the guys her age). I loved the epilogue which left me with hope for the couple and feeling like they would truly get their HEA (yeah, yeah I know -- they're fictional...but I was invested!). Even though the epilogue was great, I would've liked a little more time with the couple after their big conflict was resolved between the last chapter and the epilogue. This along with not getting much information as to why the villain of the story behaved/thought the way he did are the main reasons I made it a 4 star rating.

Storyline: This is Angie and Grayson's story. Angie's family is struggling financially, so in addition to her full-time job as a nurse and graduate school -- she gets a job cleaning out a house that looks like it belongs on the show "hoarders". She is hired by a 19 year old rich playboy that she doesn't necessarily like, but she is desperate for the money. She finds out that his schizophrenic father lives in the house, which is part of the reason that he tells her that she shouldn't venture upstairs (even though he is completely safe). Of course she ventures upstairs, and the elderly man she was expected turned out to be a hottie in only a towel. They develop a friendship of sorts when she persistently tries to get him to interact more and more. Stronger feelings develop, and their relationship turns physical. There are some issues with his illness, some family, and some legal issues...but the couple get their HEA.

POV: This was told in Angie's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never felt the need to skim, and it wasn't instalove.

H rating: 4.5 stars. Grayson. He was a sweet, super smart, dirty talking man with a mental disorder.

h rating: 4 stars. Angie. She was a really strong character that continually fought for her relationship with Grayson, and she never gave up which was a great characteristic.

Sadness level: Moderate. It deals with the struggles of mental illness, so it gets sad at times -- but I didn't need any tissues.

Heat level: Moderate. They have major chemistry with some hot scenes, but I still think the story was primary with the sex secondary.

Descriptive sex: Yes.

Sex scene with OW or OM:

Cheating:

Possible Triggers:

Closure: This had a great epilogue that gave us a glimpse into the couple's future and their HEA.

Worth the $?: I got this with my kindle unlimited, but I still think it is worth the $3.99.

Wow. Excuse the freaking, fan-girl review here but I'm on a book high!

Grayson is a rather torturous love story about a man suffering from Schizophrenia. When Angie responds to an ad to clean up an old house, she's grateful for the extra cash to pay her parents mounting medical bills. What she didn't bank on was stepping into a house so filled with clutter that she thought she'd walked into an episode of Hoarders.

Hired by Grayson's son to clean this house, she was warned to stay away from the second floor...where Grayson resides. Angie gets more and more curious about the elusive man upstairs. No sounds come from above, never does he come down to greet her...just a little movement from an upstairs curtain each day she leaves.

Gradually over time, Angie can't stand it and takes a walk upstairs. The door, slightly ajar she peers inside. One step. Two steps. She sets eyes on a beautiful, stunningly cut specimen of man in only a towel...masturbating. The first words said to her? "GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!" She runs as fast as she can out the door.

Time passes and Angie continues to try to lure Grayson from his hideaway. How can a man live in such dilapidated clutter? Dust, crates of memorabilia...It's a disaster. Only when his son tells her that his father is not mentally well, does she understand. She is a nurse, after all.

The next time she sets eyes on Grayson, he's flying from the shadows in a dark alley, saving her from being raped by her date that night. He's there...then he's gone. Her would-be rapist a heap on the pavement. She has to thank him. From there, cutesy notes are passed, taped to his door. Angie won't take no for an answer and they eventually meet.

I seriously loved both these characters. Angie never gave up on Grayson. She was enamored and wanted to meet the lonely man behind the locked door upstairs. I loved how their relationship progressed...never rushed, believable. He's 44, she's 24, something that may bother some readers but it wasn't even a blip on my radar. They just worked for me.

***************************

Being a nurse myself, I tend to shy away from any medically-related books. Unless written by an author somehow involved in the medical field, they're never clinically correct and it drives me BATSHIT. Lisa Eugene loves to delve into medically-related story lines and, being a nurse herself, she's spot-on correct! Her stories are realistic, not sugar coated or loaded with useless drama. Bravo!

Grayson suffers from Schizophrenia...and doesn't take his medications. They make it so he can't feel. He's paranoid, rarely leaves the house, won't eat food prepared by anyone but himself. Sadly, nobody fights for him...until Angie. And what a fight she had ahead of her...

I detested his son, Charles. Omg. What a miserable selfish, rich boy. On so many levels...hated him.

 photo 4500_zps78118ced.gif

Obviously I devoured this book. What a great friendship-to-love story of two people, one perfectly imperfect. Angie accepting Grayson for the flawed man he is...fighting for him...for them.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

And I thank you,

*First read: 28th Feb, 2018*

*Re-read: 13th Aug, 2020*

I read this book years ago. A mention of this book from a GR friend perk my interest to re-read this again.

Angela "Angie" Roberts (24), is a nurse/student. Coming from a financially struggling family she is in desperate need for more money. Dedicating a full time job as a nurse she also takes on a job of cleaning a house.
Grayson Witmore (44), is a wealthy man who runs companies sitting at home. He was diagonised with mild schizophrenia at a young age. Taking his medications and happily married along with a son, he was normal. But an accident which led to his wife's death had his mental disorder more pronounced as a result he became elusive and paranoid.

"There was something about Grayson that went beyond the physical, something magnetic that drew me in. Why he affected me this way? I didn’t know. But now, this ray of sunshine was frowning as he stared down at me, his eyes like cloudy blue skies. He was wondering what I was up to, I knew. He was trying to figure me out."

Hired for the cleaning job Angie didn't expect any inhabitants living there for the house was dead beat. She expected an old man who was in recluse and wanted to be left alone, what she didn't expect was a fit, healthy older man in a towel. As time passes she tries to lure Grayson out.

"Although he’d confirmed his diagnosis, I was still reluctant to believe it. I wanted to learn more. I wanted to understand what life was like for him. Why did he choose to live here, isolated from the world in this broken-down house while his son luxuriated in a sumptuous penthouse? Why did this beautiful, intelligent man feel he needed to protect himself with a fort? How had he managed a multi-million dollar company with his illness? And, did he feel anything for me?"

Angie's persistance brings Grayson out. They bond a friendship/relationship, Angie tries to understand his illness, his mistrust for everyone - even his son. While she is a nurse and understands his fear for both literary and imaginary, she tries to understand what triggers his episodes. Why would a smart man who runs an expensive company avoid civilization.

“Do you know how old I am?”
“Yes, and I don’t care.”
“I’m old enough to be your—.”
“I don’t care!” “It’s just a stupid number and it means nothing to my heart.”

Grayson was funny, passionate and brilliant and Angie, his stronger counterpart. While they were aware of their rapid flowing desire, there was a fragile distrust of harsh realities.

"I’m on your side, Grayson. Always.”

I like that Angie was always there for Grayson, never leaving his side. Her determination helped Grayson improve and put down a certain evil person. I don't like what happened to her sister but she needed to be taught a lesson and life punished her in a harsh way.
The whole book is said from Angie's POV, the book has an attempt rape scene. This is a forbidden, friends-to-lovers story of two strangers who bring forth a beautiful love story.

***** 5 Stars *****

Wow.... I literally couldn't stop reading Grayson. And for any book that keeps me up at night, I have to give it 5 stars. This deserves a standing ovation.

description

Grayson has mild schizophrenia, and he lives in a big house that could be on an episode of Hoarders. He doesn't trust anyone that visits his home. But there's something about Angie that makes him curious.

Angie is a student working on her masters. She needed to get a second job to pay for school and rent, so she got a job to clean the downstairs of the house. As a registered nurse, she understands mental illnesses. But it isn't her knowledge of the illness that intrigued Grayson. It is her giant heart.

The way that Angie pulls Grayson out of his shell is so precious. She doesn't push him or force him to get better. Grayson's trust in her leads him out of darkness. This beautifully written story will melt your heart. I can't believe I waited so long to read this.

***3.75 Stars***

My Grayson was funny and brilliant. My Grayson was tender and passionate. My Grayson could melt my heart with the tiniest smile. But this man, too, was my Grayson, a man who was sometimes out of touch with reality, who lived in the distorted world concocted by his brain. It was a world of doubt, fear and distrust.

This was quite the interesting read that I was completely invested in. Grayson's situation broke my heart, and even though he only suffered from a mild form of schizophrenia, I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like to not be able to trust your mind. He was so smart, caring, attentive and charming that until he'd have an episode, you'd forget he had any type of mental issues.

As his relationship with Angie evolved and deepened, he began to trust her with all the different sides of his life and illness.

"Angie. My heart. My salvation. My love."

Angie was a really great leading lady. She refused to give up on Grayson and made sure that he understood that she was, and always would be, on his side. For being a 24 year old with already a lot of things on her plate, I was really impressed by her. She was resilient and determined and knew how to pick and choose her battles...Especially with Grayson's son, Charles. Because let me tell you, I would have a hard time not inflicting some major pain on that boy!

The pacing of the story was great, even though it did have a bit of a slow start for me. Once the momentum started to build, I had a hard time putting the book down. And can I just say that I was pleasantly surprised by the steam level here.....quality stuff, folks!

Unfortunately, even though I really enjoyed this book, I found that I wasn't 100% sold on the romance. I don't know what it is, but I just didn't feel that spark between Grayson and Angie. They had lots in common, their banter was great and their chemistry was evident....but it felt lackluster. I don't know if I needed Grayson's POV or just more from Grayson, but I just didn't feel that extra OOMPH that I like in my romance. I liked Grayson and Angie together, but they didn't give me those stomach butterflies that I search for in my romance books.

Also, I feel like there were things I wanted better explained. Certain issues were swept under the rug or we were given throwaway explanations. I would have appreciated a bit more development of Grayson's history. We really don't get too much and that's a shame because he was a really intriguing and interesting character.

This is my first Lisa Eugene book so I'm not sure what her writing style is, but I found the writing here a bit too formal and stiff for my liking. Not many 24 year olds have inner thoughts that they're "courting melancholy." Too many trips to the thesaurus here. She's 24 years old and it's not the 1800's.

Even with some of my issues, this was a really enjoyable read that I was completely invested in from start to finish. I definitely plan on checking out more Lisa Eugene books.

I first came across this book on GR a few months back and had had it on my want to read shelf ever since, so when it came up on Netgalley I was really excited to get a copy.

Now, maybe it was because I had been looking forward to this story that I was left disappointed?

For me, it just did not hit the mark. I actually struggled with the heroine, and in the beginning felt she should have just left the hero alone tbh, as opposed to "mischievously" thinking up ways to get his attention. Not to mention when they do get together she feels perfectly in her rights to go snooping through his stuff!

We had a lot of her thinking how hard she was working, and how much she did for her family, while being vaguely sneery and superior when it came to her friends and little sister, who clearly did not work as hard as she did.

Given the background of the characters, it never really got too deep, it was all quite superficial, it just lacked depth and real emotion, and at times, I felt like I was reading the heroine simply dictate a list of actions that had taken place as opposed to actually experiencing this as it happened.

" I couldn't sleep. Anna and I got into a huge fight after we got back to the apartment. She said horrible things to me. She accused me of wanting Charles for myself, of being jealous of her. Scornfully she dubbed me Miss Perfect. Perfect daughter. Perfect role model. Perfectly boring. She said I never took risks and that I never lived"

Lots of tell and not enough show tbh.

Oh not to mention the vague victim blaming, when the heroine is almost raped, she is filled with self blame, for putting herself in a vulnerable situation, since she "knew what men were about". Well, just no and no, since, no one should feel self blame in that situation, and what is with the whole "what men were about"? Well no men I know. It is insulting to woman and men tbh. But later on she manages to slut shame her little sister for daring to show cleavage so whatever. But her sending a bloke she caught having a wank, when she was somewhere she was not supposed to be, a naked drawing of himself is ok and not at all creepy, apparently. Oh and, this heroine, who is a nurse and seems has some knowledge of mental health, thinks it is ok to attack the poor sod, and repeatedly punch him over and over as he had "wronged" her.

All in, I really liked the concept of this, and really wanted it to be good, but it was just not good for me.

Whew! What an emotional read.

I just want to start off by commending Lisa Eugene for tackling such a deep topic. Schizophrenia is such a misunderstood disease and most people know only what they see on tv and movies about it- which is oftentimes played up to be funny or WAY over the top. (Ex: Me, Myself, and Irene) Having been around people with this disease before, I can tell you that the things Grayson feels and goes through in the book is a VERY accurate portrayal into what goes on in the mind of the people who struggle with Schizophrenia. The paranoia, the distrust of people, and the frequent bursts of anger...the author definitely did her research on this topic. What struck me as the most powerful part about this book is that Angie doesn't magically cure him- which happens a lot in romance novels. Oh...all he needed was love and now POOF he's better! Woohoo! Take that science! But seriously though... even though Angie is such a positive part in his life and does help him deal with what's going on in his head, the daily struggle is still there and is still very real for Grayson.

"I-I can't make any promises, Angie. I don't know what the future holds. Right now I can only take it one day at a time- one step at a time."

description

What I loved about Angie was that right off the bat, I was able to relate to her. Grad student, coffee addict, and sick of immature little "boys". She was funny, smart and caring. Aside from the odd stalkerish behavior in the hopes to meet the handsome recluse, I really did like her a lot. The first time Angie saw Grayson suffering from one of his hallucinations and outbursts, she was there for him. It was such a beautiful scene and it totally negated the "insta-lust" and "weirdness" she displayed in the beginning. The effort she put into making Grayson's disease a bit more manageable for him was definitely something that made me root for thier relationship from that point on.

That, and of course, the mindblowing sex scenes! Yep...I had to go there. And yes, they were steamy.

I truly loved this book and I hope you guys will take the time to read it- it is very much unlike any of the other romances I read. So if you are looking for an emotional and beautiful love story, then this book is RIGHT up your alley.

So I’m always looking for something different and with this I most certainly found it. The last two days I’ve been thinking how to rate this book. Not because I don’t love it I do but the theme of the book even though it is of romantic nature shows some hard truths about schizophrenia and how it can effect peoples lives. This book will not be for everyone but in the end I’ve decided to give the book 5 stars and add it to my favorites list.

Angie needs a job and replies to an ad to clean out an old house. Her interview is with Charles and lets just say that he is a douchecanoe and a sleazy perv. Angie gets the job and doesn’t realize that someone lives in the house. At first she thinks Grayson who is Charles’s Dad is an old man turns out he isn’t and is hot.
The difficulties that Grayson fights are significant with the help of Angie he gets there in the end. Who needs enemies when you have family. Seriously how could he?

This book is beautiful and thank you Ms. Eugene for writing it.

Book: Grayson
Author: Lisa Eugene
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person (Angie)
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Rating: 4 Stars!

Age: Angie - 24; Grayson - 44.

Trigger:

I saw it all. His dark fears, his crippling doubts, his fervent passion - and his amazing heart. It was perfection. A perfect soul with fissures and flaws that made him beautiful.

Grayson by Lisa Eugene was a sweet, intense, heart-gutting read. The storyline was hot and romantic with a heavy dose of drama and angst towards the end. It's about finding love again even amidst illness and tragedy. Everything in this book, every character, every tragedy, from the way Angie's and Grayson's relationship progressed to the way they deal with their misfortunes, their personalities and even the supporting characters, felt real and beautiful. The plot's genuine, unique and thought-provoking especially towards those afflicted with schizophrenia. I really enjoyed the story and was taken by surprise with the powerful punch of emotion at the end. Some parts of the story were messy, like Ana's and Charles's affair, but still engaging.

I couldn't begin to imagine what his world was like. My senses gave me input about the world and I trusted my brain to honestly interpret the data and make accurate conclusions and predictions. What if the conclusions were often wrong? How could I ever stay grounded? How could I ever feel safe? How could I ever put my trust in anything around me?

I loved Grayson and Angie's relationship (especially the smutty parts). Angie was strong, caring and thoughtful. Grayson was an enigma, a complex character for me. In the beginning, I really felt the chills he put out and wasn't sure about his character. But gradually, as I started to know about his condition and his mind, I found out he was really worth the wait. I couldn't begin to imagine his reality and I have the highest respect for those who suffer from this terrible disease and are still able to enjoy life. The one letdown for me was Charles. He felt too young (19) to be such a lecherous mastermind villain. And why didn't Grayson notice his evil ways before the accident? Or he did notice but took no action towards it? And is there a book for Ana? Wouldn't mind reading more about her.

My Grayson was funny and brilliant. He was tender and passionate. He could melt my heart with the tiniest smile. But this man, too, was my Grayson, a man who was sometimes out of touch with reality, who lived in the distorted world concocted by his brain. A world of doubt, fear and distrust.

Apart from that, Lisa Eugene sure knows how to make me feel soft for her characters. The epilogue was awesome; really enjoyed that. It was several years in the future and it made me so happy to be able to see how their lives turned out after their misery. Overall, a sweet book with an even sweeter epilogue.

Grayson is of these kind of books that I found by accident , started reading it without thinking or searching about it and without even knowing what to expect. And then came love. I really, really liked this book. Maybe it is not a big book of those unforgettable books you will always have in your heart but Lisa Eugene gave us an honest and completely emotional , sensitive and loving story that really touched my heart. Firstly I thought that due to the main hero’s illness the book would be more dark but now that I have read I must say I liked the path that the author followed and the respect she showed for all these people that suffer from one kind of mental illness

 photo heart.gif
24 year old student Angie Roberts starts to work as a cleaner. When she arrives there she finds a really abandoned house but also soon finds out that there is man leaving upstair and he is the father of the man who hired her. Grayson is a 44 year old widower. He is brilliant, passionate and loving man who happens to suffer from schizophrenia. Every day he has to struggle with his illness and his constant fears.
After the shock of their first meeting Angie tries hard to know him better, to enter to his little world, to help him. Even though Grayson struggles with his trust issues and fears they soon form a strong relationship and the more Angie knows him the more she falls from him. Even though their immediate attraction and passion kind of surprised this part of the story was completely refreshing and hot and besides the existing evil in the background Angie and Grayson fell for each other.
Grayson Whitmore has built walls around his heart After his wife’s death he choosed loneliness and every day almost lives sequestrated in his own house. To me Grayson was actually a hero. A tender hero trying to find his balances. In Angie Grayson found the woman who would stand beside him. A woman ready to fight with everything and everyone and she is ready to win every battle in order to save him. Angie was for Grayson the hammer that threw the fort he had created against the real world.
“Angie. My heart. My salvation. My love.”
 photo save.gif
I loved Angie’s devotion on Grayson. She never gave up on him. I admired her determination. She was so brave. Being a nurse herself she knew how to face Grayson’s illness, she never abandoned him she was always there to help him to hold his hand and make sure him that everything would be ok . She never treated him as a patient and she fought really hard to give him a normal life and she actually reminded me that we live in a society that unfortunately we treat more with cruelty and dislike when these people with mental illnesses only want a little care and protection
“It’s me, Grayson. It’s Angie. I’m on your side.”
 photo grayson.jpg
I found myself totally emotioned and touched by Grayson’s daily battles. I felt his torment, his fear, his anxiety but I also loved his intelligence, they way he was trying to get through this, his passion even his humor.
I almost forgot I have also a message for Charles
 photo asshole.gif
Please, please give Angie and Grayson a chance, Their story will definitely captivate you. A tender love story about two people who fought for each other and for their salvation. I loved the epilogue. I could only put five stars for the epilogue. So hopeful so touching

Angie is a 24-year old RN trying to make ends meet. She has school loans, off campus rent, and a stomach that kind of likes when you feed it. She decides she needs a second job. She finds an ad at the school bulletin.

description

Cash? Angie said, "Sign me up."

When she goes to meet the owner of the ad, she learns that he is Charles, a 19-year old typical spoiled-brat-frat-boy. Angie ends up getting the job, but not before Charles pries his eyes off of her breasts. Angie learns that Charles' father is currently residing at the house that she is supposed to clean. He stays upstairs for the most part. And Charles specifically told her to not venture upstairs because his father is schizophrenic. But after working there for a little while, she felt she needed to at least thank him...
So she sneaks upstairs to find him. But how she found him had her frozen in her steps. Grayson was in the bathroom, um, shall we say...relieving some tension?

Grayson has schizophrenia. That does not make him schizophrenic. Grayson is a brilliant, self-made billionaire. He is passionate and caring. He is loving and self-aware. Those are the things he IS.

Grayson has mild schizophrenia, so he is aware of what's wrong with him. He understands that he has difficulty differentiating between true and right. But with the help of Angie, he learns to trust people again.

I really enjoyed this different read. It opened my eyes to the daily struggle that someone with this condition has to endure. There were some parts of the book where I did an eye roll or two, but for the most part I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

DNF.

I officially stopped reading at 47%, continued to skim to 61%, and I just can’t continue.

I went into this hoping for lots of feels and a heart-clenching romance. And I felt nothing. Literally. NOTHING.

Angie gets a part time job cleaning and sorting a mess of a house, all while the mentally ill reclusive owner hides upstairs. One glance at him and she is experiencing mega-lust to the point where fluids are trickling down her thighs (WTF?). Some intense stalking on his part, girly flirting on her part, a sort-of friendship starts to develop and then the sexing really starts and we get this…

“He pulled me close and captured my lips. I tasted hot sunshine and velvety rainbows.”

Can somebody please tell me what a velvety rainbow tastes like? I’m curious.

An early-morning freak out, he regresses and shuts her out, she suffers terribly, crying herself to sleep every night until she sees him again and they come back together in maddeningly intense passion for each other and still… I feel nothing.

*sigh*

And the whole time, it felt like the story was dictated to me. Here’s an example of Angie’s narrative…

I arrived at the house later than usual. I’d had a morning class and then had to complete a few tutorials in the anatomy lab. Spring Break was in two weeks and I couldn’t wait. I relished the thought of a whole week off from school.
Jenny was going to be away and I’d promised Anna that she could spend a few days with me at my apartment. I groaned now with regret. Anna had hammered away at me at her birthday celebration. She always loved coming into the city and being away from the scrutiny of our parents, but she could be a handful.
I walked into the townhouse and a slow smile claimed my lips when I saw a cup of coffee waiting on the perfectly constructed table. The coffee was cold and I realized Grayson must have set it there this morning. I remembered seeing a microwave in the large kitchen and headed in that direction with my cup. I wondered if he waited for my arrival every day, if he looked forward to seeing me today as I did him.

And another *sigh*

It looks like I’m in the minority with this, a lot of people seem to love it. Sadly, I just couldn’t get into it.

Angie is a 24 year old graduate student who works at a hospital and helps pay her family's bills. She needs to pick up an extra job to pay her rent. She answers an ad for a house cleaning job and gets started right away. Grayson is a 44 year old man who doesn't leave the upstairs of his house. He's schizophrenic and doesn't take his meds. Grayson is one of my favorite book characters ever. The way this author writes about his schizophrenia is so real and brilliant. You just can't help but fall in love with him. There are so many things I want to say about this book, it invoked so many emotions in me while reading and was more than I was expecting. I absolutely loved it! It was beautiful, unique and touched my heart (I know that sounds totally cheesy but it's true!) This book had everything you could possible want - a fantastic story, hot, steamy sex, romance, mild angst, and love. I could not put this book down from the moment I started reading it, it pulled me right in. Grayson is a top 2014 book for me and will go to the top of my favorites list. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance! Fantastic!

I loved that book.

It has all what I like in a good read:

-hot but flawed male. Greyson is incredible. He’s suffered from mild schizophrenia half his life. He does not want to take his medicine and is battling every moment of the day to discern what's real and what's not. Yet, he is a genius and can make rational decisions. In that way, he reminded me of the movie “A beautiful Man” with Russel Crowe featuring John Forbes Nash.
Grayson is one of the strongest persons I've recently read about as his life is a constant struggle. He also is really, really hot with his gorgeous blue eyes;

-compassionate but strongly determined heroine. Angie is down to earth and has to shoulder many burden. She'll fall hard for Greyson but with eyes wide open as she is a nurse and had to treat mentally ill patients before. Hard worker, caring, patient with lots of humor she’ll pierce Grayson’s shields and begin an incredible if unconventional relationship with him;

-steamy sex scenes: when she took a sneak peek, it was boiling hot! Have your husband/boyfriend or bob at your disposal;

-taboo. The age difference (more than 20 years) is one taboo but the mental illness is certainly the most prominent one. We don’t chose who we love. But it’s not suddenly simple and love is not the miracle remedy as many issues remained and had to be tackled. Simply, it was a love worth the fight;
- a bad guy plotting the hero’s demise in his corner. He truly is creepy and has a two faces: the golden boy and the shark. I wanted to punch in some delicate body parts more than once!;

-craft and tact. I wondered if the author was related to the medical world as she did great job writing about schizophrenia. Her writing is realistic, she does not sugar coat it but she writes with respect and care for the people suffering from this illness. Turns out she is a former nurse.

My final world: I loved it and would recommend it to any reader looking for something different and well written.

I love books that are about any sort of mental illness. I am really interested in human psychology. Sadly, this book didn't live up to my expectations.

*********************************************

- The book is very short (193 pages); therefore lacking depth with under-developed characterization. Everything happens too fast and it leaves you dissatisfied.

*********************************************

- There is too much telling but not enough showing. It's made up of mostly summaries of events and feelings with scarce dialogues. It is boring and shallow for the very same reason.

*********************************************

- It lacks logic: That’s the part that annoyed me most!

The heroine is obsessed with Grayson after seeing him masturbate and after that day, she basically throws herself at him every chance she gets. She doesn’t try to get to know the man and understand his issues. She is a nurse, for God’s sake, but she doesn’t act like one. One look at his blue eyes, and she is a goner. She never contemplates if it is a good idea to hook up with a paranoid schizophrenic 20 years older than her; no... he has blue eyes and great abs, and he saves her from being raped by her boyfriend so he is the ideal choice of a new lover.

Nope, that was not realistic at all.

I didn’t feel the romance or the passion between the hero and the heroine. I didn’t understand why she fell for him or why he fell for her. Due to scarce dialogues, maybe... And the lack of logic in how everything develops between them...

Because I didn’t feel their love, it all felt like cheap porn to me. One quick question: Why can all heroes in books do the dirty talk so well? Even the schizophrenic ones are so good at it! Is there a course “Dirty Talk 101” that every hero of a romance book takes?

Also, I didn’t understand how she trusted that he wouldn’t harm her. He is unbalanced and not taking his medicine as they make him feel numb so how is she not scared at all? OK, he saves her from being raped but this man who never got out of his house for so long was out there stalking you and you don’t feel a bit concerned about it? Why not?

Also, the same goes for him. How did a paranoid schizophrenic trust this woman completely to do everything she says? Don’t such patients have difficulty in trusting people completely?

Sorry, but I am not buying this!

*********************************************

Although I believe everyone deserves love and happiness, love relationships are harder with people who have a serious mental illness and the book doesn’t realistically portray these difficulties but creates a hearts and flowers romance, making everything seem easy peasy. I thought it was a bit dangerous to portray it like that...

Have you ever lived with a person who has hallucinations? Do you know how scary it is? And if they are not taking their medicine, do you know how unbalanced they are – how dangerous they could be for themselves and for other people? I do... Do you?

*********************************************

All in all, the idea was good but the execution of it was poor and I do not recommend this book at all.

2 stars for shining a spotlight on such an important mental illness and encouraging people to seek help if they are struggling with it or someone close to them are suffering from it.

*********************************************

Here's an awesome review about this book. I couldn't agree with it more:

Angie is hired by Charles to clean out his father’s townhouse, but warned never to talk to his father, Grayson. Angie shows up at the dusty hoarder house and is intrigued, curious about the poor old man living in the ruins of this home. Until she realizes he’s not that old and also, super hot. Then, romance happens.

description
The Good : It almost had a Beauty and the Beast vibe, since the hero hides away on the second floor of the house. I enjoyed the intrigue in getting to know Grayson, bit by bit. The build to his reveal did pull me in and I really wanted to love this love story, because the premise is solid. The idea of the hero being schizophrenic and having to live with that mental illness, as well as the glimpses of his struggle, are by far the strongest parts of this story.

The Not So Good : However, the entire story is told from Angie’s POV and she’s contradictory in her attitudes and actions, and at times, really hard for me to connect with. She’s horrified at the way she invades Grayson’s privacy one moment, then offended that he wants to keep his privacy. Moments that are supposed to be charming and cute, really didn’t resonate with me.

I appreciated that she had a full life, however, the narrative sometimes gets bogged down in the minutiae of her day. Also, her attitudes towards other characters can be fairly judgy, which is a bit of a turnoff and there’s certain things that she blames herself for that are disturbing to me as a woman.

Finally, the villain of the piece has no depth. He’s just a greedy little bastard and there’s no explanation as to why or how he got to be that way. I would have loved to understand what possibly went wrong, or even have a modicum of understanding of Grayson’s life before Angie, and there simply isn’t offered to the reader. The potential was there for some really good emotional, confrontational scenes, but the climax fell flat.

description
It was ok. There were good moments, but overall it’s a good premise that just didn’t come together in the execution for me.

This book ended up being so much more than I had expected. Lisa Eugene dealt with Grayson's illness with sensitivity and compassion and in a very real way, there was no glamorising here and I really appreciated that.

Angie was such a strong, independent and loving person who instead of feeling pity for Grayson, she tried to understand him and help however she could. The first time she saw him in his room -

"Oh my God! He was jerking off!"

That scene was hot! The whole older man/ younger heroine is a favourite of mine and these two were so good together. Angie was such a strong character and had a heart of gold knowing what she was taking on having a life that could be unpredictable, but it was so worth it. And Grayson, you could feel how much love he had for her from all his actions, even from the start with the coffee.

And that epilogue! It was perfect

"Then take me upstairs and show me what you've got, old man."

Read the book. Be in love. Be insane.

I'm scared reading books that I'm sure will leave me crying and emotionally wrecked. But I'll be singing "you are the only exception" to Lisa Eugene's 'Grayson'.

What to say about this book? It will make you go nuts. Grayson Whitmore suffers from SCHIZOPHRENIA (no spoiler here folks) and let's be honest ladies, usually that's a major turn off. But love is love and there is a reason why it's one of the most unstoppable force in the universe.

This was just a random read because I saw my GR friend Mary Ruth added this and I saw her review about this book. And thank fuck I did some snooping.

A couple friends of mine read this book and I thought I should give it a try as well.
This book is dealing with real issues-mental illness, and the way author is dealing with it is great! Both characters were built right-I loved Angie’s strong character and that she never gave up on Grayson.
Grayson on the other hand, has schizophrenia and he is aware of it; he struggles with it, with his loneliness and his fears.
I think this book worth giving it a try…
