Rate this book

I got to this book in a strange way. As you can see, if you look at the last several books I reviewed, I read two books about President Polk and the Battalion San Patricio. One of the characters at the time was this soldier named Lew Wallace. Wallace was one of those figures who was important in his time. He was a soldier, diplomat and territorial governor. He was originally born in Indiana and at least to my knowledge did not spend any time off this continent until after the book was published.

Ben Hur is a long book with lots of references to the geography of the region where Christ was born. It is written in the melodramatic language of the time. And it is a long book. But it has a compelling narrative.

I enjoyed the book, which is divided into a series of "books" that traces the life of Christ through the reflections of a couple of characters including Judah Ben Hur, the son of a wealthy trader whose, through an unfortunate event, idyllic life is thrown into turmoil. There are, as in all good melodramas, good people and bad people. And in the end Ben Hur comes through the times of trial.

I had never seen the entire 1959 movie of the book - but am now inclined to see it just to see how Hollywood handled some of the most important events.

This book is dated but still worth the time.

This is the story of a young Jewish boy who had everything taken from him by a Roman tribune and a former Roman playmate. He lost his mother, sister, property and freedom. As a galley slave he saved the life of another Roman who became his benefactor and adopted father.

He trained to become a soldier so that he could avenge his losses. In the end, he learned that God's kingdom really was not of this world and was finally able to obtain the peace that he had unjustly lost.
