Book Review: *Herbal Gut Health* by Maria Noël Groves
Rating: 5 Stars
I rarely get this excited about a health book, but *Herbal Gut Health* by Maria Noël Groves truly deserves every bit of its five-star rating. Right from the moment I saw its gorgeous cover, I knew this was going to be something special. And it absolutely delivered.
Maria Noël Groves, a clinical herbalist with decades of hands-on experience, dives deep into the fascinating world of our digestive system. She doesn’t just offer quick fixes; instead, she carefully unpacks the science behind how our gut works and why maintaining a balanced microbiome is crucial—not only for digestion but for overall physical and mental wellness. What I appreciated most was how she connects an imbalanced gut to serious chronic issues like SIBO, leaky gut, IBS, and even GERD, all backed by emerging research on the gut’s role in diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and cancer.
One of the standout features of this book is how it organizes herbs according to their healing roles—bitters, carminatives, sours, astringents, antimicrobials, probiotics—you name it. This makes it incredibly easy to understand which herbs serve what purpose and when to use them. Plus, the wealth of recipes for teas, tinctures, ointments, and capsules turns this guide into a practical toolkit for anyone wanting to incorporate herbal remedies into their daily routine.
I honestly can’t recommend *Herbal Gut Health* enough. It’s become my go-to resource whenever I want to manage digestive symptoms or simply boost my gut health. Whether you’re growing your own medicinal garden or just want to know which herbs to pick up at the store, this book has you covered. If you care about your health and love natural remedies as much as I do, this is a must-have addition to your kitchen bookshelf.

Thank you Hachette Book Group, Storey Publishing, LLC, and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this book. This very thorough and informative volume provides natural ways of alleviating digestive issues and improving digestion by incorporating balanced lifestyle practices and adopting healthier eating habits. It would be prudent to consult with a medical professional before adding any herbs or supplements to prevent unwanted interactions with medications and/or exacerbating any existing medical conditions. Otherwise, it could be a great starting point when talking to a doctor about adopting a healthier lifestyle and/or checking any symptoms.
This is an EXCELLENT resource to have on your holistic journey! Everything is outlined incredibly well in both the front and back of the book. Looking up a specific topic or herb is easy. The information was laid out well for the reader, and included everything from the issue, to possible causes, to helpful resources and ingredients, to some recipe recommendations. I will definitely be buying my own copy to include in my personal collection.
This book is an excellent reference tool, when it comes to various herbs and how they benefit the body. As many of you know, most illnesses begin with the gut. The author has taken the time to research which herb to use for one. I will not only reference this book repeatedly, but recommend it as well.
I loved this book and took lots of notes on it. It actually explained what things were, how they worked, and why they worked. So many other books on topics like this expect you to come in knowing so much already. I haven't tested out any of the herbal remedies myself, but I feel like I have a much better understanding of the direction to take.
Pretty basic info on gut health that, if one is into their own health and herbalism, most likely is already aware of. I guess it is good to have all the information in one place though.
Nice to have herbs that correlate with different conditions, although I wish she had included more herbs in the book.
Nice work on these books focusing on herbs for different ailments; this is a neat new idea and I think will be really helpful to certain people working on challenging issues.

I listened to this on audio, narrated by Tiffany Smith. While I enjoyed the narration, I highly recommend either doing a joint eyeball/ear read or just eyeball reading these so you can go back to reference some of the important information and recipes.
