Love Me to Death: Volume One

Rate this book
Whoever said ‘til death do us part wasn’t trying hard enough.

Toonimated’s wildy popular Webtoon is now in print for with a never-before-seen short story! For fans of Anatomy: A Love Story and Lore Olympus comes a graphic novel romantasy about the love triangle between a necromancer, a resurrected bride, and her very-much-alive groom.

In the city of San Guadario, necromancy has been banned for one hundred years. Every aspect of life, from buying food to getting married, requires a signature written in one's own blood. If a necromancer were to sign, their identity would be revealed by the magic that courses through their veins. As a necromancer, Victor and his cute one-eyed cat must live a discreet life, constantly on the run.

Everything changes when the wealthiest patron in San Guadario hires Victor to resurrect his recently deceased, and impossibly beautiful, bride. The catch? Victor must perform an ancient ritual which eternally binds himself to this bride. After he brings her back to life, Victor finds himself magically entangled with the bride and groom and caught in the middle of more romance than he knows what to do with.

Adapted from the wildly popular webtoon series, Love Me to Death is a gorgeously illustrated saga that is bound to stop your heart.

Did you need a queer retelling of Frankenstein with the vibes of The Corpse Bride, Coco, and The Book of Life? I didn’t know this was an option, because had I known, this would have been my personality the minute the WebToon originally began. Now I feel like I need to play catchup, because this was amazing!

In the island city of San Guadario, the church reigns, creating fear of necromancers, making them the villain. Think totalitarian dictatorship and almost a caste system where no matter what you do or where you buy something, you have to sign a document using your blood. Why you ask? Because necromancers blood shimmers with gold woven into the red.

Victor is in hiding, because one wrong move and he’ll be discovered. He hasn’t known his family or any other necromancer, so he doesn’t actually know how to use his magic. But when a wealthy prominent business owner requests him to resurrect his fiancée, he has no other choice than to hear him out.

Enrique’s family owns the banks in the city, so to say he is filthy rich may be an understatement. After his fiancée is killed on their wedding day, he’s stopped at nothing to find a way to bring her back. When he meets Victor, he gives him an ancient illegal spell scroll with the information on how to resurrect a loved one. Neither of them know the impact or the meaning behind the words, but he promises a way to get Victor off of the island and out of the church’s grasp.

Mercedes comes to with no memory of her life before. She doesn’t even know that she’s dead. There is only a deep sense of love for Victor and the further from him she gets, the colder her body feels.

I went into this thinking it was a standalone. So as the action unfolded, I kept expecting somehow to wrap the story up and yet more and more kept happening to them. As the last page ended, I finally looked at the spine and the glaring 1 printed on it. While I’m excited for more story, because I need the poly queer love that I expected from the cover art, I don’t know if I can last 5 volumes of near death experiences. 😭 I want them to find happiness now. But I’m always begging for more and I finally get it!!!!

My position as a librarian in acquisitions means that, if I see something I'm interested in, there's very little stopping me from getting to it first. Usually this takes the form of putting myself on the holds list as soon as I've created the catalog record, but sometimes I don't feel the pull until I'm holding the recently delivered book in my hands and suddenly realize that this is just what I need. So, if you're wondering how a teen graphic novel like this ended up rocketing through my currently reading to read, that's the tea. Beyond that, having not had the blessing of experiencing this kind of reading when I was the right age demographic, I'm always pulled between the vitally intriguing ideas coming out in publication and the inevitable censorship, however soft, such material will inevitably get. Such is this work, where necromancy exists but hardly any grey morality, polyamory is teased but likely won't be legitimately committed to till ten pages before the series end, and an art direction that, however luscious, tends to draw the same kind of idealized physical form for each of the genders, regardless of how well such suits each individual character. Still, for all my grumbling, I ripped through this to an inordinate degree, and I can't say that I'm not completely disinterested in the timeline during which subsequent entries are cobbled together from the original webtoon. So, not the gateway drug to the teen graphic novel lifestyle, but in many ways a vital reprieve nonetheless.

P.S. As someone who got into webtoons back in the early 00's , it's gratifying to see artists break into the market like this. For if you truly want to support art? Give the artists a living.

This is an absolute turn your brain off read but I'm obsessed with it. What if your fiancé died and you hired a necromancer to bring her back but she didn't remember you and fell in love with the necromancer instead. But now your dead fiancé and the necromancer want you to be their third. Happened to my friend Enrique.

This was a very unique story with original, memorable characters. I loved the setting and the backstory- the authors did a good job of immersing the reader into the world seamlessly. The different powers that the necromancer and "necromancee" have are cool and unexpected.
The storyline is so fast paced, I could not put the book down! Lots of high stakes adventure and pursuits and romantic tension 😍.
I would recommend this to anyone who liked the characters and vibes of Corpse Bride, the colors and excitement of Coco, and the action and magic of Phantasma or Caraval.

Congrats on getting published in paper Toonimated!

Rating 5 stars as the webtoon is fantastic, and the majority of the content in the physical edition remains the same (with some, hopeful behind the scenes additions!)

I can't wait to have LMTD in a hard copy come February 💜🩶❤️

I got this from a giveaway, and it’s an advanced copy so it’s not yet published. I liked the characters more than I expected, and the art pulled me in right away. The story moves fast and feels like it’s setting up bigger things, I enjoyed it and will definitely read it again once it comes out for real.

I adored this book. Love Me To Death is an introduction to themes like persecution through the church, different class systems, consent, morality and bigotry. It gives young readers plenty to chew on while still being entertaining and emotionally resonant.

This WEBTOON was absolutely amazing in the beginning. Beautiful art, great characters, interesting story. By the end? Completely and totally off the rails. The rules of the magic system changed episode to episode. Father Santiago became this video game level boss that would die and come back to life (legit happened 4 times throughout this series) and had no real motivation for his actions. He was just this unnecessarily evil villain. The story became so convoluted. Why was everyone victim to insta-love? There was no build up for any relationship it was like if two people had a conversation bam! they were suddenly in love and in a relationship. Luisa? Like WTF? We knew from season one she was off but bro come on her plan made absolutely no sense. None. She had no connection to Victor whatsoever, and if she knew so much about Necromancy why would she not just seek him out herself? Why did she need Enrique? And why was she not MORE involved in Mercede’s reanimation? If she wanted to be the third for the Tresalma why was she not over there putting the moves on Victor? Why did Enrique and Mercedes get powers? What was that? The townspeople that you know burned and hunted down Necromancers at the end or just like ehh? I guess he’s cool. That’s it! They all just suddenly love Victor. Things that were established like Enrique being a badass with a sword was completely disregarded like he couldn’t even fight by the end. I don’t know I’m just so disappointed in the ending this was my top WEBTOON for years and it sucks that it went to crap.

I rarely expect webtoons or graphic novels to truly impress me, mostly because of the medium and its limitations (manga is a completely different game). At best, I usually hope to be entertained. But!! Love Me to Death caught me off guard, exceeded all my expectations, and managed to win me over immediately. I’ve got picky tastes and little patience for the mediocre so I tend to drop graphic novels fast. Very few webtoons have managed to grab my attention this quickly over the years (a handful being I Love Yoo, My Dear Cold Blooded King, Purple Hyacinth, and Siren’s Lament), and LMTD easily joins the list.

This was also my first time reading a webtoon with polyamory representation, and I’m so in love with how thoughtfully it was handled. I’m not polyam myself but I adored how healthy, balanced, and deeply kind Victor, Mercedes, and Enrique’s relationship was and how it was clearly handled with lots of care.

I’m so glad I picked this up on a whim. The story, symbolism, abundant queer rep, mythology, and art style were all perfectly up my alley. OH AND I especially appreciated that women weren’t relegated to side roles and were written as strong, diverse, and capable AND that men were shown to be soft, nurturing, and emotionally open in love without that being framed as weakness. Enrique I’m looking at you <3

It took me all of 2 weeks to finish all 135 episodes and that speaks for itself :]

wait I’M OBSESSED. a necromancer, a resurrected bride, and her very alive groom. what a love triangle.
1. the illustrations are wow. i’m always so amazed at artists and how the art perfectly matched the vibe of the story.
2. the STORY. i personally cried. victor is treated as an outcast as necromancy has just been outlawed but finds himself in an opportunity to flee. all victor has to do is bring back this wealthy man’s bride. litttllleee problem…her new life is now bound to his…
it’s funny, heartfelt, and had me on the edge of my seat. i’m about to pull up webtoons to finish the story on my phone because that’s how badly i wanna know what happens next. i can’t help but feel bad for the groom…like you go to this much trouble to bring back the love of your life and she’s kinda in love with someone new??? TRAGIC. but I hate to say it… victor (necromancer) and mercedes (resurrected bride) are adorable…like must we choose???

anyways a million thank yous to webtoons for a copy of this graphic novel!

American Manga-influenced comic. Decent figure work, minimalist backgrounds (though they do improve a bit). No story pacing. The third rung of the love triangle hinted at on the cover does not pay off in the book.

In this world, being a necromancer is inherited, and is considered evil. A rich guy employs a necromancer to raise his late bride from the dead. He's successful, but she doesn't remember her life and she shares a strong bond with the necromancer as a result of the spell. They try to evade the city's Sacred Order guards while blushing every time they accidentally bump into each other.

The city is bilingual with no internal explanation. The name and some things are in Spanish but mostly the book is in English. And it's not that they're speaking Spanish and it's being translated, because there are jokes based on homophones.

This was cute! Unique story line, Latin culture, Necromancy magic like I've never seen before. The love triangle led to some silly jealousy induced plot points. And Gato was the star of the show obv.

I find that graphic novels don't give me the same depth of understanding that traditional novels do (blame it on the 'tism and bad social skills) but I felt like I picked up on a lot of the unwritten cues in this one. A+ for spelling it all out plainly lol.

I'll probably end up seeking out the next part of the story for closure.

Thanks to The Novl for the gift, it was a fun valentine's surprise ❤️

This was by far the best graphic novel I’ve ever read! It started out almost Frankenstein or Corpse Bride-like as Victor brought Mercedes back to life using his forbidden necromancer magic. Victor has had to live most of his life in hiding because of his magic. When Enrique promises Victor freedom if he brings his fiancee back to life, he takes the deal. After that, so many things happen! This book is very action packed. The magic system in this world is also amazing and the artwork is so well done. The characters just came to life so easily and I’m going to need to read more!

This was everything I like in a graphic novel. Heartwarming characters, a fast-paced story supported by beautiful illustrations, many funny moments and an intriguing plot. The vibes were reminiscent of Frankenstein mixed with The Corpse Bride and I quite liked it. It was an easy one to binge and the characters rapidly won my heart. I enjoyed the romantic tension going on and the high stakes adventures our characters found themselves into. I am excited to find out what will happen next with this story.

Thanks to HBG Canada for the copy. All opinions are my own.

I'm actually enjoying all of these Webtoons being made into printed books because it's bringing me graphic novels that are so beautifully done! This is a twist on Frankenstein, and I loved the worled that Toonimated has created. There's a lot of set up in this one, showing the magic, the overall hate for Necromancers, and getting us acquainted with our three main characters. I'm excited to see where it goes next!

A bingeable graphic novel with unforgettable characters and a unique story!! Picture this, you call upon a necromancer to bring your bride back only for her to have zero memories of you and falls in love with the necromancer instead!! Ooopsie! And that's where this unforgettable story begins, you're in for and incredible ride of romance, magic, adventure and lore!

I started reading this on webtoons, then I accidentally lost track of it. Then I saw they were making it into a physical copy and I was so happy. I knew I had to get it and read it all over! Though now that I have finished the physical book, I need more lol. So back to webtoons I go! It is defiantly a wonderful read and I love the art for it as well.

A cute spin on Frankenstein with beautiful art. It was fun, not sure if it's for me. I may come back if my library picks up more copies, but this is one I wont go out of my way to get the next volume. Just mid-range for me. It does have potential though, and I do recommend giving it a try for the art alone :)

Truly one of the best feel good poly stories I have ever seen. I've never felt a more power and sincere bond be so wholesomely displayed. I want to keep this book forever just so I can look back and be healed. You will thank yourself for reading this one. High fantasy and even higher love.

I was promised dark fantasy + polyamory and I got a muddled romance with unclear stakes that relies heavily on tropes. I was pretty stoked for an honest to God poly romance but this wasn't my cuppa and I don't plan to continue, alas.
