I found this book online and will include the link for all to access at the end of my review. I found Meyer to be helpful in places, but more critical of Elijah than I see the Scriptures being in a few places. There are differences in doctrine as well, such as the filling of the Holy Spirit. I do not believe that we bring our vessel “cleaned up” to be filled. It is His work and our yielding to it that cleans up our vessel. All in all, it is an easy read.

“We, perhaps, accomplish less by our great efforts than we effect by a consistent life, a holy character, a daily shining. Lighthouse-keepers never know how many weary longing eyes turn in the darkness to the silent light they maintain through the dark night. Our duty is to shine, not eager for great results; but content to do the will of God, consistently, humbly, and constantly, sure that God is not unrighteous to forget our work of faith and labor of love.” (FB Meyer)

I absolutely LOVED this book. It opened up Elijah’s life and ministry to me in so many new ways, and has challenged and encouraged me tremendously as a result. This is the kind of book I always hope to have nearby to revisit and read again and again. So full of scripture, it goes deep, and takes you to the heart of the stories you’ve read in the Bible instead of skimming the surface. Highly recommend!!

I have read and reread this book several times. The writing is so well done. I adore the turn of phrase and imagery in how the author unfolds what is in scripture. There is a lot to think through that I would not have done by just reading the scripture passage. But it also is not in anyway adding to scripture in a bad way. For instance the passage talks about the source of water drying up. But the author challenges you to imagine what it must have felt like to experience that. Would you start to second guess that this was where God directed you to be? And yes, I would. Why would God send me to a place that eventually had none of the resources needed to live? It must have been my mistake. But no. It was just time for him to move on to find the new place where God would provide. I love this book.

Secret revealed

It is hard for us to understand the mysteries of God. This book is a glimpse into that for me..we cannot understand because we are not God. For this I am humbled and comforted..

Good and deep dive into the life of Elijah. One could quibble with some of his interpretations (and I would), but Meyer is a thoughtful exegete and his book will help you think deeply about this fascinating prophet.

Great book! I’ve never studied Elijah comprehensively and this brought so much insight into his life and character and revealed how God worked in and was glorified through him. Though written in 1888, it’s easily understood and applied to today. Highly recommended - you can find a free PDF online!

I really liked this book and received a lot of new insight on the life and ministry of Elijah. A very timely book, considering that it was written in the 1800's. The book is available for free on a number of website. A must read!

F.B. Meyer shares interesting insights from the life of Elijah.
The prophet was an ordinary man with an extraordinary God.
This is one book I plan to read again.
