If you love Greek mythology or mythology of any kind, then Dark Deceit is a MUST read!!! I literally devoured this book in a couple of hours! I was intrigued by the basis of the story line, the characters, and the action packed angst that Lauren Dawes told in this book!

Dark Deceit brings some very familiar characters from other books/movies... Loki, Odin Valkyries, etc..... but with a significant twist to the background of these characters and their lives. I love how the story unfolded from way back when it first started to the present day. I can't wait to read book 2 in the Dark series and see where these beloved characters end up.

Korvain is sent on a mission... kill Bryn so his boss can kill Odin. However many obstacles get in the way of that mission including plans of others, love, and an instant zing between the killer and the supposed victim. Korvain is a tough, manly man that has never failed on a mission... will he be able to pull this one off or will his selfish desires overtake him and end up with him falling in love or in bed with his target?????

I give Dark Deceit 5 stars on the knock my socks off scale!! I love how Lauren Dawes sucked me in from word 1, page 1 and maintained my attention through the last page! Kudos to the author for writing an amazingly well written story that had me invested from the cover!

*I was given an ARC of Dark Deceit by the Author in exchange for an honest review*

Dark Deceit by Lauren Dawes was my first introduction to the author’s work and after reading this book it most certainly will not be my last! From the intense first pages to the heart pounding ending I was enthralled by the author’s immense talent. She really captured the essence of Norse Mythology and coupled it with her own unique blend of the paranormal. I followed up on a few sources that the author used and she really did put a lot of research into writing this book and it really shows.

This book has a little something for everyone – romance, drama, mystery, violence, death, love, loyalty, friendship etc. I give this wonderfully written book 5/5 stars – I had a hard time putting it down and when I absolutely had to, I couldn’t quite get Korvain (the irresistibly dangerous Mare) & Bryn (the intelligent, sexy Valkyrie) out of my head. If you especially love books by authors’ Gena Showalter & J.R. Ward then you will love the Dark Series by Lauren Dawes. I cannot wait for the next book Dark Desire!!

I received this book from Netgalley for my honest review.

This is an excellent beginning of a series!

The writing is perfect: fast paced and very interesting, the world building is also good; different from other PR where Gods as omnipotent and absolutely immortal. Here instead they are very easily killed.
They don't feel like Gods, but slightly more powerful humans.

This, while being an added worth, is also the reason i took off one star. I found they got killed too easily...

I aslways immagined Valkyries like beautiful warrior women, but here they're not warrior almost at all. They seem like a damisels in ditress when faced with danger. For example, one of them feels that somebody is shadowing her with ill intent, so she panic and cannot insert the key into the keyhole, drops it, fumbles to find it... why doesn't she take her sword and prepare to fight, when one touch of her soul can instantly kille the foe? Why???

Still, I liked the book and I'll be wanting to read the next one, hoping the missings here will be corrected somehow...

I received an ARC from Pan Macmillan, via netgalley, in return for an honest review.

If you're into your Norse Gods and like a lot of action with a twist of passion, you are in for a treat! Dark Deceit has strong characters, mixing human and non-human together in this delicious and gritty rollercoaster ride of a novel. It's vicious but soft, cruel yet tender, tells of an electrifying attraction that seeks to triumph against all odds.

The mythology isn't factual here, but that doesn't stop the powerful characters springing to life straight from the pages. The story is gripping and intense, I was disappointed when it ended and left me wanting more. I'm very much looking forward to the second Dark book. 4/5

Dark Deceit was a great start to the ‘Dark Series’ and I really liked it.
To give a bit of the lowdown of the story, it goes like this…. Bryn was Odin’s lead Valkyrie, the first in fact and someone has hired Korvain – an assassin - to kill her thinking that by taking her out, Odin’s death will become possible and that is what the person who has hired Korvain is ultimately after. Korvain is someone who shouldn’t exist, his kind being wiped out by the Aesir gods, so he has no problem taking this request on BUT when he makes contact with Bryn, he finds himself putting the deed off as he becomes enamoured with her and is left conflicted, should he kill her? Or kiss her?
Bryn had left Odin’s side over a century ago and along with her Valkyrie sisters has made her home on earth amongst the humans. She is unaware of the threat to her life but very intrigued by the new bouncer she has hired, for some reason, she is drawn to him and he makes her feel things she has never felt before…. But can she trust him?
When someone starts picking of her Valkyrie sisters though, she is left with no choice but to trust him – not just with her life but her heart too.
So, I really enjoyed this story and I liked the author’s use of Norse mythology. A lot of the characters are recognisable from that mythology and I’m sure most of you know about Valkyrie. I liked how the Valkyrie are portrayed her and I like how they tie to Odin in a more emotional way than that which I usually read. Bryn of course, is the leader so it makes sense that the story be based around her and what better way to bring some hotness to the story than sending Korvain to her doorstep. I loved that Korvain had been sent to kill her and gets blindsided by meeting her, it created a good scenario and for a good while you’re left wondering if he will actually go through with it. They are a great match though, he has the mysterious, dangerous, alpha hotness about him and she’s a strong, beautiful woman who needs a man like that to compliment her, it’s clear from the get go that these two have chemistry and you can really route for them to become something to each other. I like how Korvain uses his abilities to spend time with Bryn, that adds to the seductive feel and really the fact that these two should be enemies amps that up as well.
The actual story that didn’t involve the romance was quite violent and brutal. Someone is killing the Valkyries and we get to be there for all of that through the murderers pov, I won’t spoil it for you but you will probably guess who the villain will be, but saying that…. Nothing is straight forward. The story is told from multiple pov and introduces us to people in Korvain’s life as well as the Valkyrie on Bryn’s side. With Korvain being an assassin, he obviously answers to someone so there will be consequences if he doesn’t go through with his task and could have devastating effects for him. The action in this was great, the pacing just as good and I’d say that this is just a peek into what potential this series has and I definitely like what I read so will be back for more.

Ever since the Fall, Aesir gods, Valkyries, light and dark elves now live among the humans. Blending in, living as they do. Some are no longer as powerful while others still are, but they all still have the ability to instill fear among their kind. While centuries may have passed, they still hold grudges and are still trying to rectify the wrongs that have been done toward them, especially one vengeful god in particular.

Fast forward to present day Boston, Mass. - someone wants Odin dead. Being that he is still an immortal and still retains much of his power, being the All-father and all, that's not going to be an easy task. There's really only one true way to get to him and that's through one of his beloved Valkyries. Korvain, a Walker and the last remaining dark elf, is tasked with taking out Odin. In order to get to him, he must first eliminate Bryn, a Valkyrie now running her own nightclub. What he didn't expect was for Bryn to be Bryn; he can't let feelings get in the way of the job. Not now, not ever. Unfortunately for him, that's exactly what happened.

I really liked what Dawes did with her story, weaving in different mythologies and deities into a modern day tale. She stayed true to certain aspects of the Norse mythos while making some other aspects truly her own, so there was a definite bit of uniqueness to be had. Not to mention, I loved the different powers most characters possessed - something called fading. Really neat way to get from place to place and I liked how she incorporated that element.

If I had to make one gripe, it would be the relationship between Bryn and Korvain. I didn't find Bryn to be that believable as a whole - initially, she came off as tough and untrusting. When something happens, she immediately calls Korvain and doesn't hesitate to fall into his beefy arms, even though he is still essentially a stranger. Their relationship, while being quite sexy at times, really didn't strike my fancy all that much. It was still fun, still sexy and dangerous, but I was left with an unsatisfied feeling.

3.5 stars. I recommend this for fans of paranormal romance looking for something a little different. I will certainly be continuing on with this series with the next installment, Dark Desire.

All I can say is THANK YOU GOD! Seriously, I've been waiting for another Lauren Dawes book for-EVER! Okay so not forever, but it sure has felt that way!! She was throwing little teasers up on her facebook page, posting amazing pictures of these new characters and even throwing some clues around as to what this book could possibly be about! She was driving her fans insane! Yes Mrs. Dawes, I said it! INSANE! So when I finally got my little hands on this book...I knew to clear my schedule and devour it!
One thing I love about this author is she is one of the few that can write in multiple characters in one storyline and carry them without you getting completely lost. The chapters are separated just so that you can dive in and get lost in this make believe world she has created for you. She takes you on an adventure from every point of view. I love it! Who doesn't want to be in the head of the villain right? I know I do!! I like to jump right in! It's genius really!
So what has Lauren Dawes written for us this time? Korvain. I would leave it at that if I could. Really that's all that is needed to be said! hahaha So Korvain is one extremely hot character that is set on completing one mission. Just when he thinks his mission is going to go fairly easy because he's awesome at what he does...BAM...enter Bryn. Well the two can combust your pages into smithereens! But that's not all there is to the story. There are these little strings that tie other characters into this amazingly story of this age old revenge plot. When all you have is your honor to fight, what do you do when you find love? Will it crumble everything that you are or will it make you stronger? Oooooh I'm getting excited all over again and want to read it again! In fact I think I will!! I give this book my thumbs up!

Failing his task means his death for the dark elf Korvain but killing the valkyrie Bryn may just destroy his heart in this mesmerizing paranormal romance.

This steady paced, smooth flowing and intriguing plot draws readers in with lot of suspense and romance. The reader can’t help but get caught up in the story as Korvain worms his way into Bryn’s life and dreams in order to find her weakness and complete his task but the closer he gets the harder that task becomes. Bryn is a strong willed valkyrie that captures the heart with her loyalty and drive to protect her sister valkyries and the attraction between her and Korvain burns hot but the relationship has too many secrets to progress smoothly.

The well written scenes and details capture the imagination and bring the story to life while the well orchestrated suspense ensures that the reader can’t put the book down until they have read every last word. Spine tingling excitement builds throughout the story as the danger escalates not only from Korvain’s guild master but also from Loki who is determined to kill Byrn and all the valkyries for vengeance. The characters are strong, compelling and grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning especially Korvain and Bryn who both have very good reasons to fight their growing bond.

The author has created a fascinating world with some captivating characters, interesting elements and an intriguing spin on Norse mythology that kept me fascinated with the story and on my toes with some intriguing twists. The story does start off a little on the slower side to me but it quickly picked up and I found myself immersed in all the intrigue and the complex plot.

I read Dark Deceit in two sittings - literally. It took me around 24 hours to read, and I loved it.

Lauren Dawes has crafted yet another masterpiece. Quite a bit different from the 'Half Blood' series, 'Dark Deceit' is the first book in Lauren's new 'Dark Series.' In 'Dark Deceit,' In this story, we are given a modern peek into the world of the mostly-forgotten Aesir gods of ancient history. We're introduced to Odin, to Loki and Thor; we're introduced to a group of Valkyries, and we're introduced to Korvain (not necessarily in that order). The story that unfolds here is A-plus-MAZING, with a cast of characters that are the perfect mix of strong-enough-to-make-it and weak-enough-to-be-real. I can't rave enough about this book. It's got suspense, sex, violence, romance, betrayal ... it's got EVERYTHING.

Bryn is one tough chick, determined to need no one and to stand strong on her own, the leader of the Valkyries and the one they all know they can count on. Korvain is the dominant leader, the black night of destruction, hell-bent on doing his job and doing it well. Loki has been wronged and is seeking revenge, while Odin is scrambling to put his fallen existence back together again.

Who will come out on top of this mix??
Well now, I can't tell you that ... but I can tell you that it's worth finding out.

This was a first time read from this author - While the story she created was really well done the romance was not. This story is based on Norse Mythology (Loki, Odin, Valkyries) which was done really well in my opinion, the story was engaging, had loads of action, gore, torture, and a thriller type feel to it. I was kinda sad Loki was a freaking psycho in this book (I loved the Thor movies!). I think the authors writing was very good.

But.. it had multiple pov in the story. From Loki - to Odin - to Odin's wife - to the boss of the hero - to some of Valkyries - to the best friend - to the sister of the best friend - to the hero - to the heroine. And these multiple pov were not little, they were long. The plot, action, and constant changing of pov totally swallowed up the romance side of the story for me. I really had a hard time believing in their relationship and make a connection. Maybe it was cause they didn't really spend a whole lot of time together. A couple dreams (he was a dream walker of sorts), he chitty chatted with her at work, then they were thrown into the Loki plot, and at the end they had sex. Like I said the plot took over the story. The plot was good, but I needed the romance.

Yes I would read the second book in the series, just hoping for a lot more romance.

Korvain is a Mare in service to do a job that he usually quite enjoys. Bryn is a creation of Odins, though no longer in his service she still has ties to him. Korvain is given a job, one he can't refuse, to kill Bryn. However after getting to know Bryn Korvain is faced with something he has never dealt with, feelings/ attraction to his mark. Now Korvain must keep Bryn safe from his boss as well from an outside threat.

I will say this book started off a little slow for me but it did pick up and the last part flew by. You will come across some characters that you will be familiar with (Loki, Thor, ODin) but with a modern day twist. This is the story of what would happen if the Viking Gods lived among us today. Loki is out for revenge and he will not be denied. You will quickly learn that the Gods are all asses and really deserve to get what is coming to them, however, as always it is their subjects that seem to pay. Korvain is swoon worthy, and you have to love a bad boy gone good.

Dark Deceit is a sexy spin on the story of the Norse Gods Loki and Odin, better known from the Thor films. First off I'd like to say I didn't like how Loki was portrayed in this book, being a Loki fan from the movies, but this is fiction and the author's own spin on this tale I'm sure. This is a story of revenge with a bit of love and steaminess thrown in. It was well written. I liked reading about the Mares and the Valkyries and can't wait to read more in this series.

I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this. The story pulled me in. I loved that the author gives a good dose of steam but tells a really good story. The only thing I did not love was that the author throws out tons of names in the beginning. It makes it hard to follow until you get used to them. If you are looking for a interesting take on Norse gods look no further this is the book for you.

Fans of Christine Feehan, J.R. Ward and Sherrilyn Kenyon are going to love Dark Deceit by Lauren Dawes.

The Aesir gods' power has waned with their lack of followers. The valkyries have abandoned Odin, yet remain loyal to each other. The rest of the pantheon are scattered and a "dysfunctional" family at best. Dark elves, formerly hunted by the Norse gods, are assassins and Korvain is amongst their best. Loki...well you'll just have to listen to it to find out what Dawes does with her version of Loki. All I'll say is that you won't think of him the same way again

Korvain is sent to assassinate Byrn, Odin's favourite valkyrie. Now, you know where this is heading - of course he falls in love with her. The romance between the two is written well and is both sweet and very passionate, and counter-balances the violence of the plot nicely.

This novel is rife with ancient feuds, pantheon politics, crime, and murder and is appropriately set in a dark, urban, grimy environment that you'd expect from a crime noir novel. I liked it.

I also liked the choice of narrator, which surprised me as I'm not generally a fan of American audio narration. (Apologies to my US friends.) Jeremy Cohen is easy to listen to and the clarity and pacing of his voice meant I'd no trouble keeping up with the story. He produces a broad range of male accents, making it easy to pick characters, and has the kind of voice you'd expect in crime noir. (He could easily play Sam Spade). This is ideal in Dawes' dark world. (My only complaint was that this didn't lend work well with his narration of the female roles - I came away feeling the valkyries were a bit whimpy.)

Overall I enjoyed it and fans of Feehan, Kenyon and Ward will love it.

Overall 4 Stars
Performance 3 Stars

The main reason I started reading this book was because I liked the plot summary and enjoyed the first book. I am not a huge fan of these sexed up characters who seem to have lots of time to devour each other when world is going to hell literally. Yes a little steamy sex sprinkled here and there are fine but I got tired of reading how gorgeous and sexy Kobal was. The constant descriptions of his body became tiresome as we got it the first couple of times. This is just my personal preference as I am more an urban fantasy girl but I enjoyed the story enough to keep reading and skimmed over the rest.

Recommended for lovers of urban fantasy, paranormal romance and Norse mythology. Lots of action, fast paced plot, intensely dangerous characters, and an interesting back story. This story involves modern day Norse gods and goddesses battling it out on Earth after their fall. Loyalties are tested and the plot thickens as Odin, Loki and the Valkyries fight for vengeance, blood and love. I liked the idea of imperfect gods/goddesses, a fresh take on Norse mythology and the over encompassing love story between Bryn and Korvain, which is both seductive and intense. Will love be the death of duty?

Nearly DNF and ended up only skimming over the last two chapters. It was pretty terrible. I wish I could get back the hours I dedicated to pushing on with this book in the hopes it would get better. What annoyed me - these women are supposed to be fearless Valkyries. Women who in history rode into battle and slayed countless men. In this book they’re cowering women whom constantly shake with fear. Boo! The macho male lead was a bore. He had no character at all. The writing was subpar. Jumping from scene to scene often with no context left my shaking my head. After writing this I’m annoyed at myself for finishing it. It had so much potential. Will never read another book by this author

“I’ve always love mythology and Dark Deceit was a mind-blowing and addictive story that gave me exactly what I wan without me knowing that I want it!

This was my first book of Lauren Dawes and I must said this won’t be the last one. I literally devoured the pages. Trust me, once you start you’ll be engaged by the characters and the plot.

I don’t know how to express the greatness of this plot. I’m not going to give you any spoiler because you must experience all the betrayal and the emotions.

A story that will forever be in my heart and I highly recommend it to you!”

I liked how the characters from Norse mythology where woven into a modern day paranormal romance (something I never thought I'd say), I didn't connect with this novel as much as the first Hellhiem novel. While I enjoyed reading the book, it didn't force my keep reading, or make me want to go back into it immediately.

Bryn is a Valkyrie, leader of her sisters especially now they had broken away from Odin. But despite the rift, she is the key to Odin’s immortality

And Loki is loose – and looking for vengeance

Korvain also hunts Bryn, seeking to bring down Odin in revenge for his lost people and at the commands of his clan leader – but shortly after meeting Brynn his resolve crumbles and he soon finds himself in the role of protector, not assassin.

I have to say I hate the way that women are depicted in this book. All of them. Now, there are possibly some women in this book who I may have appreciated if they were separate, but collectively it’s just one mass of badness

Most of them are victims. And not just victims, but pretty much helpless victims. Frigg, powerful goddess, is thoroughly demonised before becoming a victim; we never see one scrap, one iota of power or capability from her. The Valkyries – VALKYRIES! Warrior women, dressed in mail with blood stained weapons – exist to be a collection of damsels to be saved. We never see any real fight or power from them – they’re just hunted down one by one, put up no fight and are easily brought down. The whole book revolves around rescuing and protecting these utterly helpless figures.

Even their leader and our supposed protagonist, Bryn, is an immensely frustrating figure. She never actually does anything. She constantly talks a good game but we never see her fight or actually show any toughness or even make a good decision. Or make a decision at all. When her sisters are targeted she has a tantrum, falls apart and asks a man to go check on them. She doesn’t even all them and ask them all to gather up – she sends a man round to help. Her one and only attempted plan is to sacrifice herself and hope that Loki, the big bad, doesn’t hurt anyone else and can be trusted

Her master plan is to trust Loki. No, really.

At least there’s a big strong man to rescue her!

As well as victimisation there’s some severely dubious sexual issues going on here. Firstly the Valkyries are all virgins – thousand year old virgins by the command of Odin. This could have been used to present Odin’s oppressive patriarchy- but no-one treats his demand as unreasonable, only his harsh punishment of Kara, a Valkyrie who broke it – as wrong. The other Valkyries MAINTAIN their virginity after they have left his side. On top of this Kara, that one Valykrie who broke the taboo, is continually sex shamed, throws herself relentlessly at Korvain and is generally cringe worthy in her utter desperation to get laid. This is also the totality of her character. And Frigg, villainous lady that she is, is of course an adulteress who tries to seduce, well, every man she sees and, again, is lacking anything else in terms of characterisation – she hates Odin (because she’s jealous of the oh-so-chaste valykries) and wants to have sex with any and all men. She is slut shamed pretty horrendously for this including the line:

“She was the one who ushered people in between her legs like it was a movie theatre about to close its doors for the screening”

Demonised or pitiable sexual woman cast against virginal protagonists of purity? That’s a trope

Then there’s Taer, the sister of Korvain’s best friend. Why does she exist? To have a crush on Korvain (like all women everywhere it seems) and to be extra angst and leverage as bad guys force menfolk’s co-operation by threatening her with rape and murder. That’s pretty much the entire point of her.

I’ve opened with these problems because they consume the book – and kind of define the book. While this book throws around a lot of names from Norse Mythology (and was what made me so intrigued in the first place) it does very little to use Norse Mythology, develop the mythology or make it relevant beyond names.

I really enjoyed the Norse Mythology aspect of this book and the different POV. However, although I enjoyed the different POV I was also quite disappointment with the lack of POV we were given for the MMC and FMC. I felt that we were not able to see a relationship develop and it was quite difficult to form connections with the characters and their relationship due to this.
I also did not like a specific scene that felt extremely anti-climatic. Regarding what occurred during the book and the details, this particular scene could have been a lot better.
I would recommend this book for lovers of Norse mythology however, be warned that going into this story with the romance being a subplot.

Wow, this was a serious book. There was lots of characters from Norse mythology. Odin, Thor, Loki, the Valkyrie, etc. But these aren't the characters from the popular movies. Not even close. In this book, at first, Loki is a very sympathetic character. I felt bad for him. Later on though, he's definitely not the god of mischief - he's cruel and mean and was quickly no longer on his side. But that was only part of it...

Bryn, the leader of the Valkyrie, loves the rest of the Valkyrie like they're her sisters. I really loved the motherly/sisterly bond she has for them. It was great, but of course, it ended up being a bit of a weakness. And she was also crazy brave, as you would expect a Valkyrie to be. Her history with Odin was sad and it really pissed me off. It was cool though that there were so many layers to her relationship with him, even if I never really warmed up to him. He wasn't a major player in the story so I think it was okay.

Korvain is the hero and he's pretty badass. It's a strange name and he's a strange creature. I'm actually not sure what he is. He's supposed to be some kind of dark elf but the dark elf are extinct and no one knows what he really is. He also has lots of powers that no one knows he has. My favorite thing about Korvain was that he's this big, bad, scary killing machine but (eventually) he's so sweet and kind and gentle with Bryn. I loved seeing both of those sides to him.

No one had a lot of stuff to do in this book, except Loki, who was exceedingly cruel and sadistic. Korvain was going back and forth between his house and the club and eventually looking for the missing Valkyrie. Bryn was either wringing her hands over the missing Valkyrie or arguing with or about Odin. I would normally say that this book was a little boring but I'm not sure that it's true. I mean, there was a crap ton of action ad lots of stuff happened. Especially, a lot of Loki torturing people. But in the end, I just wanted the book to be over.

This would be a phenomenal book for someone who is super interested in Norse mythology. Something tells me this is a crazy take on them. But I personally found it difficult to care about anyone in particular. I think the writing was pretty good but the story just wasn't able to hold my attention. There was very little Sexy Time and not a ton of romance. There WAS a lot of torture and lots of stuff happening but none of it meant anything to me. And that made it less than an enjoyable read.

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. I truly have to say from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU!!!

This is the first time I ever read something written by Lauren Dawes and I’m glad I did it! I saw a post written by Lauren that she was looking for people to review. I read the blurb and in an instant I wanted to read more. Got home from work and started reading. Before I knew it, time flew away, it was 4 in the morning and I just finished the book and had to go to work in 4 hours. Didn’t mind it when the story was so amazing and adventures. The entire time I said myself “jackpot” because this book right here has everything your bookworm mind could want. You have mythology, drama, violence, mystery and romance, pretty much a story that will leave you wanting more!

The story starts explaining the complicated love between Bryn and Korvain. Nothing starts right with these two. Korvain has been told to gain access and infiltrate in Bryn’s club to kill her. He is smart, hot and most of all he is a rare specimen, a Mares or one of the dark elves and that makes him even more dangerous. He has the perfect skills and unusual at the same time and he is an excellent assassin. So, Korvain decides to do this mission and goes after Bryn, but he can’t kill her and doesn’t understand why. He has to kill her because she is a Valkyrie who holds the key to Odin's survival. What he doesn’t know is that Bryn is also a smart and though girl, no one can stand in her way! What will happen to these two?

This story has a lot of twists and turns you won’t see coming and they are going to keep you to the edge of the seat! You can see from the author really did her research. She described the book so perfectly; it’s easy to imagine you are right there. I’m not a writer, but I think that it’s a hard thing to accomplish. Not many succeed. Another plus is that Lauren succeeded in writing this book from multiple points of views and she did it great! In the end, what I wanted to say is this book right here has everything you could possibly want. So, I highly recommend it!

So I bought this book at the #IADU14 from the Author, and I did start to read it but life got in the way and then I found out that Momentum Publishing had picked it up.
I knew that there was going to be a revised copy and I said I would wait to review the final version.
I Loved both the original and final covers too and if you go to Lauren's website she has a great Glossary page.

So what did I think - well Lauren has a taken the Aesir gods and put her imagination into overdrive and created a series that is both familiar and refreshingly different.

The main character Korvain is a ruthless assassin for his boss - he is the last of the full blooded Mare (dark Elf) because Odin tried to wipe them out) his mission is to kill a Valkyrie Bryn, the Valkyrie are no longer aligned with Odin and are living in the human world, the trouble is when Kovain meets Bryn he feels an attraction, something he thought he would never feel and his decision to ignore his task causes repercussions.

The main Villain is Loki - now at first I actually felt sorry for him, and thought Odin's punishment was quite Brutal and sadistic, in fact I still think Odin is a jerk!

But he soon is causing mayhem in Bryn's world and Korvain soon ends up trying to save her and the other Valkyrie's from Loki.

The book is fast paced, keeps you page turning and when I came to the end I was like ... NOOOOO - but heck sigh of relief BOOK 2 is available :D YAY

Lauren Dawes is an author to watch, she has another series available too which I bought also - and look forward to reading soon.

Flawed Immortality

This series must he read in order. This is the first book.

Other than the very narrow and cynical view of Loki I really enjoyed this book. The pantheon could have been a bit better researched but all in all this was a good fun read. I will definitely be checking out the next book in hopes that it will be even better!

Korvain is probably the last pure blooded Mare still alive. That makes him not only a danger to himself but also to others. Odin feared their powers and ordered them all slaughtered on sight well before the Fall... He is also an Assassin and his newest assignment is to kill Bryn. The catch is he cares for Bryn on sight and quickly falls head over heels in love with her. How will he keep her safe? Will he be able to keep his chosen family safe at the same time? Who wants Bryn dead and why?

Bryn was the first mortal tricked into becoming a Valkyrie in Odin's service. Little did she know the true price (or origin) of her immortality. After the Fall she broke with Odin to protect her fellow Valkyries as best she could. All these years later it seems Odin will go to any lengths to get her back by his side (and under his thumb) ... Why is Odin so obsessed with keeping her close? What does he truly want her for? Can she trust Korvain? Who is hunting her sisters?

This was a fast paced cross genre romance rooted in the basics of the Norse Mythos. I can't wait to see what happens next in Dark Desire: Dark Series 2!

***This series is suitable for adult readers who don't mind poking fun at the Gods or the occasional sex scene

If you like any form of Mythology this book will certainly appeal to you! This is a story with a thread of revenge running throughout it, starting with Odin’s punishment and imprisonment of Loki, then quickly moving on to the present day. The Aesir gods are no longer venerated by humans, indeed the gods and associated beings like the Valkyrie and dark elves all live unrecognised among the humans.

The last full-blooded dark elf is Korvain and he is sent on a mission to kill the beautiful, fabled, leader of the Valkyrie, Bryn, so that his boss can kill Odin. Chemistry between Korvain and Bryn is rampant but if he fails to kill her, Korvain knows he will die. The conundrum of choices he and other characters experience make this an enthralling read. It is well written, moving seamlessly from one character’s point of view to that of another, helping the reader understand and empathise with their motivation and reactions to each other throughout the story.

This is a fast paced, lively read with murder, unlikely alliances, regret, mystery, mythology and romance all written into a powerful book, the first in the series. I can’t wait to read the next one to find out what happens to these characters and others! Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this book in exchange for this, an honest review,

This is a new series full of mythology and I really liked this one. Bryn was Odin's lead Valkyrie, but Korvain was hired as an assassin to kill her. Killing her takes her out of the equation and Odin's death will become possible. Whomever hired Korvain just wants Odin dead. Korvain isn't even supposed to exist, his kind was exterminated by the Aesir Gods, and that gives him the want to do this. Except that when he comes in contact with Bryn, he can't seem to do it. He is bewitched by her. He is supposed to kill her but just wants to kiss her. LOL Bryn and her sisters left Odin and made a home on Earth with humans. She has no idea there's an assassin out for her. She does however like the new bouncer she hired. She doesn't know who to go to or who to trust when someone starts killing her valkyrie sisters. This was so much fun. I loved the little twists the author made on norse mythology and her versions of how to play things. I liked the characters a lot too. The romance is HAWT and I loved the mystery of wondering how Korvain will play his hand. If he really going to be able to kill her? There's a good bit of action and suspense added to the mix. The extra POV of the killer is creepy. It made it for all the more suspenseful. The book was fast paced and well written. I definitely look forward to going into book two. I really want to see more from this world! 5 PAWS!!

I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When I first read this, I kept thinking of the hotties from Thor until I saw how much of a jerk Thor was! But he has a right to be, I suppose, because his brother Loki has committed his last crime. Odin and Thor lock him away, and centuries later, we come to see that the gods have fallen and now live among us. Also with us are Odin's Valkyries, and his oldest daughter Bryn is everyone else's key to finally killing the All-Father. Loki, Darrion, and Frigg are at the top of the list, but as to whose plan will succeed? You'll have to read to find out.

I enjoyed this a lot because it's about Norse myths with awesome tough characters. Korvain and Bryn's fate seems doomed, and their first meeting is HOT! This book is a multiple-POV with very interesting characters. I liked their back stories and for some moments, I sympathized with them (yes, even the bad guys).

I recommend this to those who love their myths in the modern world with plots and streaming attractions.
