You could round up the stars a bit, due to memorable characters. Kyo Kara Maoh! was one of the first anime series I watched, years ago when all the tropes were still new to me. A friend recently lent me a short stack of the manga, which, it turns out, is still not the original source, that being a series of light novels. I won't be tracking back that far.

The plot is at once an exemplar and a parody of kid-falls-into-another world (in this case, flushed via a toilet that a gang of bullies were trying to stick his head into), discovers himself with magical powers and insta-status on the other side. From there it gets stranger. For a refreshing change, it's not the sort of tale where every conflict, no matter how world-shaking, is resolved with a man-to-man fistfight ending in a punch to the face. (Always the face, oddly. No one much kicks each other in the nuts in these things, which I'd think would resolve the fight quicker. But anyway.) Fights and adventures this tale has, but the conflict-resolution is somewhat more realistic and talky.

The manga's not half bad. As far as I got, to the end of Vol. 6, it tracks the anime plot pretty well, minus the most annoying opening credits music ever created, so that's a plus. The characters all seem to be their charming, goofy, or appalling selves, sometimes all three at once. I still like the ever-responsible half-brothers Conrad and Gwendal best, and not just because they're drawn pretty.

I see the anime has lately popped up on Crunchyroll, so despite its age it may be pretty available. (Crunchy usually doesn't let you skip the credits, so I suggest muting the sound.)

I just discover this series (like ten years late….) and I have start watching the anime. This is so silly and fun, I love it!

Shibuya Yuuri get his head shove into a toilet by bullies and get transport to a fantasy world. At first, the young man thinks he is in a theme park since everybody have weird clothing He get attack by villagers that believe he is a Mazoku (of the demon race.) Yuuri is save by the handsome Sir Conrad Weller. He then meets Gunter Von Christ, who explain to him that the soul of their King has been transfer in him at birth.

Once in the capital, Yuuri is presented to Gwendal & Wolfram, Conrad brothers and the King protector. Wolfram automatically hate him and cannot believe that he is the future king. After his mother being insult, the young king slap Wolfram in the face, not knowing that this act is consider as a wedding proposal in the strange world. The young lord is insulted and challenge him to a duel. Yuuri powers are awaken, this is the confirmation that he is really the next Maoh.

It hilarious that the boy acknowledges that everybody he meets are handsome guys. The previous Maoh, Cherie-sama is quite funny, and so far, she is the only woman in this manga.

It quite an easy/already done premise, boys get transport into a strange world at become the chosen one. What catch me here are the nice drawing and the silliness of every situations. I enjoy it so far, and I like the fact that it doesn’t take itself seriously.

One of my favourite anime all the time : ) i only read this comic on mangafox site, but i wish i could have the real comic one day : ( my most favourite part is when Yuuri accidently ends up engaged to Wolfram because he slap him on the left cheek which is the way proposing marriage among aristocrats : P Yuuri slap wolfram because he insults Yuuri's mom. And the most shocking is it is not so unusual about boys relationship : ) it's kinda funny when Yuuri learn amny customs of the demon kingdom, like:
Slapping on the left cheek: Proposing marriage
Put a knife on the floor: Accepting for a duel

This comic also gives me an advice like: never dislike someone very badly coz maybe i will fall in love at that person : ) just lke happen to Yuuri & Wolfram : )

Anime Kyou Kara Maou memberi warna tersendiri sewaktu tahun pertama tayang. Kalau tidak salah based on novel? Atau anime dahulu? Baru kemudian manganya hadir. Kalau tidak salah ingat... ^.^;a

Manga jilid pertama mempunyai cerita yang sama seperti anime. Kalau kualitas gambar, jujur anime lebih bagus dan mengalir lambat. Manga cenderung cepat tapi detail. Begitulah.

Love it so much!!!

I absolutely love this series. The story is amazing and the characters are drawn really well. I really, really hope the other volumes of this manga will be translated and become available for us in the US so I can get the entire series.

It starts off the same as the light novels and the anime, with small changes here and there, but then ventures off to a completely different story by the end. The fact that there are hits of BL in the story just makes it that more compelling, for me at least, and I absolutely love the isekai part of it too.

I wish I could be like Yuuri and be called to another world, but I guess I’ll just have to be satisfied watching their adventures instead.

This review is for volume 1-3.

4.5 stars, rounded up.

This series was a part of my childhood. It's a classic. I've watched the anime several times, though I've only completed the entire 117 episodes once (due to limited access the first few times I've watched it). This is my first time reading the manga and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. The drawings were better than the anime and there were additional details the long anime didn't cover. My only complaint was that Yuuri (and Wolfram) could sometimes looked a little too young. The anime Yuuri looked properly like a high-schooler, but manga Yuuri looked like a preteen in many of its panels.

I'm currently reading the light novel series. Sadly there doesn't seem to be an option on GR for the novels. This is such a fun plot and so criminally underrated. From the first volume, I can say that the novel is the best version of the Maruma series and I can't wit to catch up seeing as there's a whopping 19 volumes to it :0

The series were funny and I love how he flushed the toilet and went to another world this was so random 😂, but how Yuri became strong it was unexpected and how he had to marry Wolfram was so unexpected literally 😂

More adult than the anime

I absolutely love the anime and am happy to read the manga too. There are some extra details and even some adult bits that were not in the anime that we a fun bonus to the experience.

The series started off strong and I thought it was going to be good but it just worn on and I lost interest. Series may have been dropped, can't remember.

Okay, man gets teleported to another world using a toilet... What?

Now he's a demon king and tasked with destroying humanity.
So, standard anime startup with a comedic twist.

Wel leuk, maar het ziet er naar uit dat dit een verhaal is voor de characters en niet voor het plot. Ik ga het niet verder online lezen.

Love reading the English version.

The dialogue, and scenes don't go against each other. Even watching the anime doesn't subtract my interest in this story.

For some reason, Kyo Kara MAOH! is a series that has followed me throughout all my nerd days. My mom bought the anime on DVD when I was in high school, we watched it in my undergrad anime club, and now I'm reading the manga cheaply on Kindle in grad school. It's a totally ridiculous series, about an ordinary boy who gets flushed down a toilet to a world of handsome men and told he's a demon king. They then get caught up in sassy hijinks and fantasy adventure, though this version of fantasy adventure has a lot more guys talking about wearing skimpy underwear than The Twelve Kingdoms version of it. As silly as it is, though, this series has a really good sense of humor about itself, and the manga's art is really nice, too.

There's no suspense in this series as of yet, and the plot is so generic and predictable that it proves the complaints about stuff based on light novels being formulaic well predates the current boom. For what it is, though, it's quite well done.

A comic based on a anime based on a dating game. It is written by a yaoi author who already has other books here in the US.
It is based off the anime pretty closely, with just a few added moments. I am not sure if the moments were in the game (since the game is only in Japanese I haven't played it...yet).
The art style is fine, it is very similar to her other manga. Sadly though I have to say that the art in the anime and the game is better.
Suffice to say, if you like the anime read this manga. It is a nice little treat while we wait for Kyo Kara Maoh! Season 3 to be translated...maybe...someday...

What it lacks in storyline it makes up for in art. DANG is the art pretty.

To tell the truth, I'm not really sure what to make of it in general. The art is lovely to look at, and the main character (I can't really say "characters" as there's not much revealed about the rest of the cast) is a fun one to watch.

Basically, this is another of your "normal guy tossed into fantasy world to save them all according to prophecy" type of stories. So far, it hasn't done much to stand out from the others.

I'm reading this because I felt a wave of nostalgia. I used to watch the anime when I was little and didn't really understood why Yuuri married Wolfram who is a guy. I just find it hilarious during the time. Reading the first volume, it was quite funny but well, the description and the lack of female character totally emphasize that this is a shounen ai genre. And of course, the drawing is way prettier than the anime. I guess I like Yuuri here more than Wolfram. He looks hotter and his hair didn't get longer when he shift into Maoh mode but his eyes got more intense.

Eh. I've read this sort of story* too many times, and volume 1 didn't charm me into to wanting to read more of this one.

I did, however, really enjoy the art. ^_^

*Ordinary person gets spirited away to another, magical world. The magic people have been waiting for this person, per prophecy. The person will save them from something. Blah, blah, blah.

I watched the anime some time ago and i was happy to notice it didn't stray from the original storyline in the manga. Yuri's character is extremely entertaining to read. And the situations he gets himself into because of his ignorance of the culture in Shinmakoku is hilarious. Great first volume.

This is what seems to be a strong start of an interesting series.

Yuri is swept away from his home in Japan and into completely different world. He is the Maoh of the land, or the Demon King. The bewildered Yuri tries to come to terms with what has happened and tries to accept his fate as the new Maoh, destroyer of humans.

One of my friends gave this book to me a couple of years ago and after reading the cover text I really didn't know what to think about it.
My doubt was taken away soon thought. When I started reading the book I already liked it after a few pages. It is incredibly funny on so many levels and I can only recommend it to everyone who loves funny adventure novels! :)

Fun

I have it 5 stars because I already watched the anime and I wanted to see how the story would change on the manga. I have to say it is funnier and more engaging than what I thought. It has shown so elements so if you are uncomfortable with boy on boy stories then stay away from this series.

The manga's so much better than the light novel, at least IMO. Yuri seems much more likable here, not so annoying. I love the story of Yuri and Wolfram's engagement, it's quite hilarious. But it's rather painful to see Wolfram's harsh attitude towards Conrad, just because Conrad's half-human - especially since I've seen the anime and I know that Wolfram actually loves his brother deeply...

This is one of the most unique manga/animes ever. All featuring around a boy who gets thrown into something, he clearly wasn't expecting. It can definitely bring you into tears, or a huge smile. The characters are very well written and you come to love all of them. Konrad And Yozak will forever be my favorite characters.

The first volume here is rather slow as far a comparing it to the anime. I must rave about the artwork though, it's amazing and very beautiful despite the lack of much going on in this volume. I eagerly wish to read volume II now.
