For Minnesota Glaciers captain Scott Walters, skating on a bum knee—and self-medicating to keep skating on it—is all part of the game. That the painkillers he's eating prevent him from having meaningful relationships is just one more sacrifice in a lifetime of them. He’s worked too hard to let his image be ruined by injury or dependency, so he hides the pain and fakes the rest—a girlfriend would only complicate matters.

High school teacher Rachel Fielding never needed a man in her life, but she also never intended to grow old alone. When she meets Scott while visiting her brother, she’s intrigued to find herself wanting him in her bed. For hours at a time, as often as possible. Scott is a giver, and just the memory of his attentions is enough to drive her crazy. Anything long-term is out of the question, though—the pills she finds in Scott's house indicate he's struggling with a lot more than growing older in a young man's game.

When what starts out as a what-the-hell weeklong fling turns into Scott and Rachel exploring each other outside the bedroom, Rachel hesitates. But Scott asks for her support to break his addiction, and hearing him admit his secrets has her ignoring her own rules—until he breaks her heart. With the Glaciers refusing to renew his contract and his future with Rachel uncertain, Scott has some big decisions to make and a lot to prove—especially to himself.

I love to read. It's a simple fact that has been true since I discovered the worlds of Judy Blume at the age of ten. After years of weekly travel as a consultant implementing computer software into global companies, I ended my nomadic lifestyle to raise my two children. Now, my imagination is my only limitation on where I can go and my writing lets me escape from the daily duties of being a mom, wife, chauffeur, scheduler, cook, teacher, cleaner, and mediator.

If writing wasn't a priority, it would never get done.

This is a hard one for me to review, because for me it was an okay read. Maybe I was impatient while reading this because the story was really slow dragging and I felt like it was going nowhere. Also, I'm not fond of 3rd person and it was a bit hard for me to emotionally connect to the characters. This is just one of those books that didn't work for me, but I do think it can be enjoyable for a lot of people.

Scott Walters has been headed straight for a crossroads in his life and career, one that every professional athlete faces, but it’s never easy. He’s at his friend’s wedding when he meets Rachel Fielding, a high school teacher on vacation visiting her brother. Romance, and so much more happens.

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between

A more serious premise than expected : So much of the hockey romance you’ll find is new adult and focused on the wonder and excitement at the beginning of a player’s career and the choices that come with that. It is fluffy and fun, and entertaining. This, is not that book. The hero and heroine are in their thirties, and they are pondering questions of what to do with the rest of your life? What will you sacrifice for that dream you’ve had since you were a child? And what happens when the reality is your body cannot fulfill the dreams of your youth? I love that this book explores this topic.

This is hockey, warts and all : Ms. Aicher has crafted a very different, and very compelling, take on hockey romance and I am beyond fascinated with it. The first book in the series, Game Play, shone a light on female hockey players, as well as the stress and strain of a contract year for a young male player. In this book, it is about the flip side of it all, when the lights begin to fade and that career that was everything they lived and breathe, is fading fast. There’s a clear love of the game, but it doesn’t gloss over the toll it takes on a body and mind, the sheer physical abuse players suffer for the love of the game. Much like Scott….

description

Scott broke my heart : One. More. Year. That’s the heartbreaking mantra Scott has. You can feel his pain, see the heartache in giving up the dream he's spent a lifetime working towards, to get his name on that cup. His body is failing him and his knee can’t hold on, but he is doing his damnedest to make it happen. I think the depiction of a serious dependency on prescription painkillers is very realistic. The denial, the excuses, and rationalizations that Scott makes to justify his use all ring true. I admired his strength in admitting his problem, and doing something about it. But it's his eventual acceptance that the dream isn't meant to be that's bittersweet and pulled at my heartstrings.

Rachel’s a strong heroine : Scott’s struggle is compelling on its own, but Rachel’s strength and support really add alot to this story. She’s dealt with the fallout of her brother coming out of the closet and the family NOT singing kumbaya and accepting it. She also struggles with the relationship with Scott for many reasons, all of them very reasonable. A big one is her career in another city. So often it’s just blindly expected for the heroine to drop what she’s doing to be with the hero, and I liked that Rachel wouldn’t blindly drop everything. While she’s drawn to, and begins this relationship with Scott, she will not simply allow him to dictate the way their relationship will go on either.

So little time for something so serious : About the only issue I have is the timeline for their romance. Considering where Scott is with his addiction, I struggled to reconcile them actually getting into a long term relationship. The story is very realistic and that one note felt juuuuust a bit off because of it. I would have bought their HEA had their relationship played out over a longer period of time. But I let it go because it is a romance, and sometimes, condensed timelines are the price paid for a HEA.

The Bottom Line
I really liked it. I've been so impressed with Ms. Aicher's writing and this is no exception. I'd recommend it for those who love hockey, and appreciate a more realistic, bittersweet type of romance. I'm interested in what's next in this series.

05/10/2015 --

You don't hear much about this author, but she has serious skill. I read this book in a day and really enjoyed it. Why? It is an adult story with adult situations for adults and you'd never get this from the cover, the title or the synopsis.

What I want to remember about this book:
1 -- The really good characters. They are adults -- both in their early to mid thirties. Life hasn't been all they expected it to be. Both want more and see time just slipping away. How many times have you known of people where this is the case. It is such a tough thing to view. We all think we have all the time in the world and then one day we don't. Now what? This is the story about the "now what."

2 -- This has hockey as an backdrop, but it is so much more. It is about the dark side of hockey that we don't hear much about. What happens to that star at 20 or 25 who is now 35 and on the downward slope of a sports career? What if he has injuries he is trying to hide so he can have another year and a chance at the BIG championship? This is that story.

3 -- I read this because it has a sports theme and because I really like this authors writing. This really is more than what I was expecting. It's about faith in your fellow man. It's about hitting bottom and working your way to the top. It's about making tough decisions about your life and going against the comfortable and heading off into the unknown. It's about having the courage to live life, take chances and loving yourself for making good, but tough choices.

4 -- This writer has serious writing skills. She can create these great characters, develop a story and the backdrop so seamlessly and pull our emotions in slowly and completely. She is really good and I'm just amazed more people aren't touting her skills.

5 -- The price is good at $5. It is well worth it.

Now for a few things that could have been better:
1 -- There were minor editing issues. I don't normally comment on these, but I can't give 5 Stars when these exist.

2 -- Like I said before, this is a more serious read and you just don't get that from the cover, the title or the synopsis. Doesn't do this book justice. May pull people in, but may not be the people you really want to target with this book. Someone wanting something simple with a bit of skate time thrown in, will be a bit disappointed at the emotion and detail found in this book. The marketing for this one looks hot and steamy, which is true, but it is so much more. My opinion only.

This is the second book I've read by this author and it will not be the last. I really like how she weaves a realistic, emotional story. I especially liked how hockey played out here and there will be another in the series. I'm thrilled. If you haven't read this author before, this would be a great book to start with. It stands alone, but doesn't have to. The first in the series is good too!

Happy Reading!

My Review:
This is something that you don't see very often in romance...a hero who's an addict. But Scott is a professional athlete and all the body pains that come with that so his addiction is understandable. And his pain and humiliation over his addiction is such a visceral thing...my heart hurt for him. Lynda Aicher did an incredible job creating his character and still keeping him an empathetic character. I wanted to hug him and wrap him up. Luckily, so does Rachel, and she does a pretty decent job of it. But she's tough on him when she needs to be, too.

But the addiction doesn't become an issue for Rachel for about half the book, simply because she doesn't know about it. That doesn't mean that they are conflict free though. Rachel lives in Atlanta. Scott lives in Minnesota and Rachel is not willing to do a long-distance relationship. She grew up with an active duty military father who was absent for way too much of her life. She saw what her mother went through. She doesn't want to do the same.

The other real difference is that although the book is incredibly hot and sexy, Scott has sexual issues brought on by the drugs...and his problem is not the one that you're assuming it is, so he's able to hide even that. Wow...I bow to Lynda's writing skills here. It was like she was within Scott's skin...seriously, so well written. I challenge you to read those scenes and not feel for this poor guy. I loved him...huge flaws and all.

I really enjoyed this book. I love hockey stories, but this one takes a different tact than most others do. Scott is an incredible athlete and the Captain of his team, but rather than focusing on his prowess on the ice, this book shows how much he's compromised (especially his body) to gain that success. It's a good moral...when is the cost too much? Something that Scott isn't very good at truly measuring throughout most of the book. Gah...my heart hurt for him...for so many reasons throughout the story.

I liked it and plan to reread it again. It was a great story and I can't wait for more from the extremely talented writing of Lynda Aicher.

Loving this series. Ms. Aicher did a great job with a hard and difficult subject, plus threw in a whole bunch of hot sex and a great love story. I have been looking forward to Scott's story since we meet him in Bonds of Courage. I was not disappointed at all. Not only do we get to see Holden, but Rachel is Rock's sister (Bonds of Denial). This was just a great book. Now I'm hoping the next one will be Grenich's HEA.

This emotionally charged romance is the story of Scott and Rachel. Meeting at the wedding of Scott's hockey teammate who happens to be a good friend of Rachel's brother Rock, there is a spark of attraction between them that sets things in motion, even as they both know that Rachel is only in town for a week on holiday and that this can just be a temporary fling. But when Scott takes the brave step of opening up about his drug dependency, Rachel is in a unique position to help him, with hopes that there is the possibility of something more permanent in the works. With so much on the line and Scott's hockey career in jeopardy, will the steps Scott takes bring him and Rachel closer together or ultimately push them apart?

In my mind, a successful author needs to be able to really get into the heart and mind of a character and examine everything from their standpoint - how they feel, how they react, what their needs and desires are. This deep point of view isn't easy to achieve and takes skill and practice. Ms. Aicher has accomplished this in spades with this story about Scott and the reality of a hockey player on the edge. He's had a knee injury that is no longer treatable in any manner except drugs, he's at the end of his contract's lifetime, and he's getting old in hockey playing years. Yet, he's not willing to give up his sole reason for being just yet. He's made past decisions, unwise ones, that have started to haunt him. Reality is a slapshot in the face as Scott faces the crossroads of his future. Enter Rachel. A warm, friendly, loving woman who sees the man Scott is (or at least, the parts he wants to share) - funny, caring, strong, dependable. He makes spending time with him fun and sexy and everything she could possibly want in a man. Just being with him stirs her senses.

'Heat flushed through Rachel, her body a lightning rod of desire. Every touch of Scott's hands or lips ignited another rush of sparks that vibrated over her skin and sunk into her core. She was lost in the sensations and didn't want to be found.'

Their love scenes are steamy and passionate (but also come with some surprises). As Scott realizes that what he wants with Rachel is more than a week long fling, he must take a hard look at his life and comes to the conclusion that to make things more than temporary, he'll have to come clean - in more ways than one. Trusting her with his secret vice takes more courage than he ever thought he had, especially when it first must come with the realization that he has a problem. I really loved the way Scott's whole being was presented to the reader - his self discovery of his addiction was a huge part of the story and the ups and downs he goes through as a result were equally heartbreaking and eventually hopeful. Though we also get to see things through Rachel's eyes, it is Scott's that really tell the tale.

The other interesting thing about this story was that unlike the first in the series, Game Play, which featured a lot of on ice action, this one was about hockey behind the scenes. Agents, coaches, up and coming players, team dynamics, politics, money - the backbone of the sport is laid bare in all its sometimes ugly truths. I found this to be quite fascinating, a real behind the scenes look at what goes on in the off season and how the drive to succeed for some players (like Scott) can overshadow the health and welfare of the players. Scott's teammates play an important role in the story as he is reminded that his decisions ultimately affect his friends and family too. This was a sexy, deeply emotional and well told story of a man, his demons, and the woman who is willing to stand by his side. 5 stars.

I enjoyed this book. I don't think I've read a storyline quite like this one, where the main character has a prescription pain killer addiction and it was very interesting, and it seemed pretty well done, with what limited knowledge I have of these matters. There's much less hockey in this book than in book 1 of the series, so I missed that a little bit, but I defintely still enjoyed it, and I think for a lot of readers, they would like it even better because of that fact. Rachel's actions . But, overall, it was a well-written book and I definitely continue to look forward to future books in the series.

3.5 Stars. There were a lot of things I liked in the story, like how Scott's addiction to painkillers was handled; but there was also a lot of cliche and creaky characterization, with pat solutions nicely tying up in the end. There was a good idea behind the book, but I ultimately wound up doing a lot of apathetic skimming through the wildly uneven and really slooow storyline. Better than some books I've read, but not as good as many others. It was just okay.

Beth's 4.5 Star Review

There truly is nothing better than a good hot hockey hunk romance, they are my absolute favorite to read. This is the second book I have read by Lynda Aicher, first one being Game Play, book one of this series and I must say she has really nailed it both books. I have thoroughly enjoyed both of these hockey romances as she has done a great job giving two fresh and very different stories.

Rachel Fielding is spending some of her time off from teaching during the summer with her brother Rock and his partner Carter. A week before she is to head back home for the new school year she meets Scott Walters, captain of the Minnesota Glaciers. Their connection is instant and they decide to spend time together and have some fun before she leaves town. Although Scott is struggling, he’s addicted to prescribed pain killers for his knee and has just been released from his team, they are refusing to renew his contract. Rachel happens to come across his pills and ends up figuring out he has a problem and gives him her full support

The characters in this book were so great. I loved his team mates, they were like a family and when he finally came clean with them at the end of the summer, they stood up for him and gave him the support he so needed , I really do hope we see more of these great guys in the future books. I absolutely loved the main characters, Scott and Rachel and loved that they were in the 30’s, gave it a much more mature feel to the story. Although they hooked up to have some fun, they were in that stage of their life that they were done with being single and wanted to find that person to have a family with. The chemistry between these two were hot and off the charts, but I loved that they there was more to them than the attraction, they also became friends and I could really feel the connection between these two.

I really loved Rachel, she was so strong and supportive, she only met Scott a few days ago, yet she was the one to support him and help him when he needed the most, she could have completely walked away when she found those pills, yet she stood by him and gave him the support he needed to make that next step and seek help. Scott of course was a sexy and very sweet hot hockey hunk that I absolutely loved. I really loved see him vulnerable and struggling with losing his one love, Hockey, it really showed the other side of athletes, one side we never really truly see. And I loved how he handled it all, he did make some bad choices but in the end he made the right one.

I loved the main storyline of this book, Scott was the captain of the team yet for years he played and suffered through injuries and pain, but as time passed and the pain got worse, his tolerance for the prescribed pain meds got less and less and the amount he had to take to ease the pain got more and more to he soon became addicted. He tried to hide it from everyone, although there were a few that saw the truth. I really enjoyed how the drug addiction storyline was written, it was drawn out or a filled with a bunch of drama surrounding it, yet it still remained to be important part of the book. And I loved that it not only affected in his life and his hockey career but that is also had a physical effect on him and being intimate. I really love how he struggled with it, how he had to hide that from Rachel and how he handled it once he had gone through rehab. One aspect that I really enjoyed was that even though when they first come together the drug addiction made him lie and keep things from Rachel, later on when came to grips with his addiction they were completely honest with each other, they were straight up to each other even with the tough things like

Overall, this was another really fabulous hockey romance from this author that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am also pretty excited to find out that Rock and Carter have their own book in another series by this author, The Wicked Play series and loved these characters so much that while I wait for Penalty Play I will definitely be checking out their book. From the moment I picked this one up I couldn’t put it down, I instantly fell in love with the characters and their story and was kept completely engaged the entire story. The only thing I found it missing was some great hockey action but it was also explainable as it was due the fact it was the off season and his issues.

3.5 STARS - I ENJOYED IT

This is my first time reading Lynda Aicher and I would be very happy to read more by her. This is a book that based on the cover alone one might think is a fluff piece but it really is more. The leading man, Scott, is a pro hockey star but due to a 4 times knee injury he has turned to self medicating in order to keep himself on the ice. The medication he takes is all "game legal" but that doesn't mean that it isn't addicting.

Our leading female, Rachel, is a high school teacher who meets Scott at a wedding. They are drawn to each other but don't immediately pursue anything.... Scott knows that the drugs he takes affects his relationships and Rachel doesn't do long distance relationships. Against both their better judgements they do finally begin dating, knowing that it won't lead to anything long term.

While this book is a contemporary romance, it does deal with a much more series matter, drug addiction. I was impressed with how that subject matter was handled in the story. A lot of romances would skim over the ugliness but this book gave an authentic feel to what it would be like for a couple in the beginning of a relationship who have a very real issue laying between them.

I was impressed with Rachel because she, for the most part, came across as very mature in how she dealt with Scott and his addiction. She didn't give knee jerk reactions but rather took a breath and responded in a way that wouldn't cause Scott to put up walls. It was refreshing. Scott had a lot to deal with because he knows that he can not continue playing if he's an addict, but can he continue to play if he's not? That's the big question, as well as, is playing worth the risk of his health and relationships.

I feel this book was well written and kept me interested. There were a few things that I felt could have been done better. One is that I would have really liked there to be more actual hockey in the story. I wanted to read a hockey book and this book involves a hockey player but almost none of the story has hockey in it. Another is that I felt things toward the end were too blatant is how they happened. These couple of issues were what kept me from giving the book a higher rating, but I still really enjoyed the book. I will probably now have to read the first book in the series and I will definitely be on the lookout for the next book. I will also check out other books by this author.

If you are looking for a sports themed contemporary romance with a bit of a heavier subject matter, you should check out Back in Play.

*I received an ARC of Back in Play through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*

Playing professional hockey is all Scott Walters has known for the last fifteen years. He wants the Stanley Cup, but he also wants a wife and family. A bum knee forces Scott to over-medicate in order to play the game, and all of the medication doesn’t mix with a healthy relationship or a healthy career.

High school teacher Rachel Fielding doesn’t need a man in her life, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want one. Meeting Scott feels like kismet. He’s the perfect guy for her—until she finds out about his drug abuse. The fact that she’s only in town for a few more days doesn’t help matters.

When Scott asks for Rachel’s help to break his addiction, the two grow closer than ever. But Rachel has rules for her relationships, and Scott returning home to play hockey is a deal-breaker. Scott will need to make some tough decisions about what he really wants out of life.

Back in Play was an interesting read that tackled the tough issue of dependence on prescription pain medication. Scott was not only addicted to the pain relief, but also to the mind-numbing effects of the pills. But as with most medications, there were side effects. One of them happened to be that Scott couldn’t orgasm. It’s not a subject many people want to tackle, but it’s real and it can bring down an otherwise healthy relationship. Lynda Aicher tackled this subject with grace and finesse throughout the story.

I liked that the main characters were both a bit older than your typical romance. Both had established lives and careers, and they needed to figure out how the other fit into it all. Rachel was supportive throughout Scott’s rehab, but she was dead set against any type of long distance relationship. She also didn’t want to be excluded from the decision-making. Scott only wanted one more year to play hockey, and his decision to return left Rachel out in the cold.

At the same time, Rachel never actually spoke up about her expectations. She was a very vocal and honest character, so this kink in their relationship put a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Both of the main characters had a hand in the major angst. I just felt Rachel staying quiet was a little out of character for her.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, which had a nice happily ever after. I would definitely read more by this author.

This book was a little different for me since the hero was a addict but overall it was a good and kind of emotional read.

Scott is not only sexy but he is hiding behind the secret of addiction. He meets Rachel at a wedding and they click right away. Since she is only in town for another week they spend so much time together and become to get real close. Although they have sex since Scott has been addicted to pain killers he can get it up but can't finish and this has been going on for two years.

Rachel is smart, funny and successful. Once meeting Scott and they shared their first kiss she knows he can be the man she can fall for and start a family with. She soon finds out that he isn't perfect and wants to help him In every way possible which I thought was so sweet. Scott finally tells her his problem and she wants to help only if he will accept it. When he finally does they fly to Atlanta and he goes into rehab.

You can already figure the road is going to be tough on them and when he gets out they try to pick up where they left off but he still is fighting the feeling and Rachel doesn't trust him all the way but they both love each other very much.

Both these characters balance each other out in a good way. They both have strong personalities and yet they get along for the most part. I liked how this book was different from all the other romances out there. I think that's why I was drawn into reading this. I did like how their was a road they both had to find in order for them to be together.

I can't wait to read more of this series and see what the other players will have in store for them.

Why I read it: I received a review copy from the publisher via NetGalley. The blurb just hooked me - a bit unusual and very intriguing; it lived up to its promise.

What worked for me (and what didn't): I haven't read the first book in the series (yet) but I think this one works well as a stand-alone. The story begins at the wedding of what I assume to be book one's hero and heroine. Scott Walker, the Glaciers captain is in attendance. He was the best man. His knee is very sore and he's popping pain pills but is being careful not to mix them with alcohol. He's been hiding or downplaying the pain in his knee for so long and he's desperately tired. He's also desperate to keep playing. It's the end of the season and the Glaciers have just missed out on winning the cup. He wants one more shot at it before he retires. His contract is up and the Glaciers have been coy about renewal. He's 34 and he knows he's nearing the end of his career. Is he already past his use-by date?

At the reception there is a very attractive woman Scott hasn't seen before. This is our heroine, Rachel Fielding, the sister of a friend of the groom. She is in town visiting her brother Rock (short for Rockford) and his partner Carter, for the summer. Scott and Rachel are beyond attracted to one another but Rachel is going home in a week. It seems any potential relationship is doomed.

However, their attraction is so strong, Rachel ends up spending most of the rest of that week with Scott.

I'd give this 4.25 to 4.75 stars.

I love a good romance with a sports H thrown in. Usually it's a light-hearted, fun read with a sexy H. Well, there's a sexy H but definitely not light hearted.

Others have described the story in detail so I won't restate. My thoughts:

1. Scott, yes, he's addicted to pain pills but the author's description of how he got there, why he does it, how he fights it and gives in to it - it's painful and honest. And damn if I didn't want to give that man a hug and tell him it would be ok.

2. Rachel, is a strong, warm hearted woman who deserves everything good. She's attracted to this sexy man but she's also there to help him when he needs help. At the same time she doesn't discount her own worth and just give in because he's the man.

3. Scott and Rachel together are just everything. The scene when Scott gets home and she tells him not to snap at her and he says not to baby him - even without the addiction - that sounded like a real couple having a real conversation. When they had their fight I hurt for both of them.

4. This isn't a wham bam thank you bam speed reading story. It takes it's time to take you through their journey and I loved it.

I can't wait to read more from this author.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Scott Walters is in denial. His knee is shot and he's in constant pain. Wanting to play just one more year and one more shot at the Cup, he's willing to sacrifice just about anything to accomplish it. Then he meets Rachel Fielding and there's something about her that catches his interest.

Rachel is interested in Scott as well and is willing to spend what's left of her vacation with him. Rachel can't believe how well they get along and she if she had one wish, it would be that she had more time to spend with Scott.

Then she learns Scott's secret, she is faced with a decision. Help him or walk away.

Scott is finally ready to face his demons and accept the consequences of his actions. With Rachel's help, he is able to find a place to heal and walks out a better person.

Only time will tell if he has truly changed and how strong his will to survive and thrive both on and off the ice.

This is the second in the series - and I loved book one so was not surprised to find this was also a great read.l Ms Aicher has a wonderful way of dealing with a big issue in a very personal and meaningful way. Last time it was about the lack of opportunities for women in top sports, now we deal with the issue of dependency on painkillers. I was completely engrossed in the story-line, let alone rooting for the couple and their potential together. It amused me that Rachel didn't really even have a passing knowledge of the sport, yet her humanity and empathy made her the perfect person to support Scott in his time of need. That she taught calculus was just a bonus to a fellow nerd/geek like me.

Once you start one of these books there is not a good point to take a break, so make sure you have a clear evening or two! I nearly missed my train stop on the way home, I was so distracted!

I'm basically going to be a carbon copy of Sam's comments.

This was fine, but Scott & Rachel's meeting like they did made everything that followed feel too much like instalove for me. And, while some parts of the plot were drawn out (almost bogged down), the most important ones were barely acknowledged, especially at the end.

I didn't particularly care for the overprotectiveness of Rachel's brother either.

Overall, it just missed the mark.

What a great read Back in Play turned out to be, I really enjoyed it.

The writing is well done, the storyline held my interest from the start and the chemistry between the characters is smoking!

You will definitely want to read this one, I highly recommend it.

Thank you Carina Press via Netgalley for the advance copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Wow. Such a powerful story.

Scott Walters is an expert at hiding behind a gracious smile and keeping a safe distance. He's got his eyes on the prize--the Stanley Cup--and maybe this next year will be the one. He doesn't do relationships or other entanglements. Managing his knee pain takes a lot of his focus.

Rachel Fielding is a smart, straight-forward woman who doesn't need a man to complete her. She isn't a hockey fan so she doesn't really know much about Scott other than recognizing their mutual attraction.

When what starts out as a fling turns into something more meaningful, they find in the other someone worth revealing one's most secret self to, and the power and freedom in truth.

A hard look at addiction and how it really can stealthily erode what seems like solid footing until it's all shifting sand.

Ms Aicher does a great job with Scott and Rachel--their struggles felt real; their victories so worth celebrating.

I thoroughly enjoy Aicher's writing, and her handling of not only the hockey parts, but also the real life parts. is a serious subject, and Aicher handles this with kindness and understanding.

I don't like that Rachel said what she did towards the end, but I can't stand a man who makes decisions without consulting his SO. Seen that too many times (and experienced it personally) in unhealthy relationships.

I will continue with the series because these characters are so compelling.

I struggled to start this book because of the fact that I know someone with the heroine's exact name and it was throwing me off.

But when I was finally able to push aside that aspect, the book was pretty good. The chemistry between the characters was good and there wasn't the bdsm aspect that I was hesitant to read. What I really wanted more of were hockey scenes that were sorely lacking. Even the skating scenes were minimal.

But even that small taste of the hockey world helped - especially since the season had to end so suddenly.

Scott's a hockey player with a bad knee and addicted to painkillers, Rachel meets Scott while visiting her brother. They have a great connection but she's going home in a week and they start their relationship knowing it has an end date. Only Scott doesn't want it to end,. she helps him face his addiction but theirs isn't an easy road to find happiness together.

Reading from an addicts' point of view is so interesting to me.
Plus a hot hockey player is always a yes for me.
