Golden Age of Magic #2

The Gilded City of Dreams

Rate this book
In 1920s Manhattan, a young fairy godmother is caught in an evil conspiracy to control her sisterhood’s magic in a sweeping historical fantasy by the bestselling author of The Vine Witch.

Unlike most dreamers, Celeste made it in Hollywood—albeit as a Fée Gardienne in a magical, centuries-old sisterhood. Yet her excitement is tempered by the death of the Gardiennes’ leader, making Celeste and her fellow fairy godmother Anaïs caretakers of the sacred elder staff. Charged with returning the ancient relic to Paris, they set off for New York City to catch a steamship to France. But the 1920s Big Apple roars with danger in ways Celeste and Anaïs never anticipated.

Upon their arrival, a street urchin steals the staff and disappears into the shadows. When Anaïs taps into her rebellious streak to search for the thief on her own, she falls into the clutches of a mysterious band of kidnappers who are seemingly aware of the magical possibilities the stolen staff can offer. To find Anaïs and retrieve the enchanted heart of the sisterhood, Celeste must rely on her wits, her magic, and her trust in a stranger—even if it means putting her friend at risk.

An ARC copy of this book was provided by Brilliance Publishing on the NetGalley platform in exchange for an honest review.

Overall I much preferred the sequel than book 1 in the series. The plot held me a lot more and I felt much more invested in the characters.

The magic system and items were very interesting - the fake store that was a front most couldn’t see, the relic mask that only came off when you were grateful. I still had a lot of love for their familiars - they rescued the mission more times than I could count.

Some of the writing felt a little more clunky to me compared to the first, with characters saying phrases like “we’re cooked.” Miss ma’am, the roaring twenties were the 1920s, not the present decade. Because of this, the characters read like they were much younger compared to book 1.

If you’re after a more YA-seeming, fast-paced fantasy with a historical setting, give this one a go!

After the events of The Golden Age of Magic, Celeste and Anaïs team up to return the elder staff to Paris. When they arrive in New York City to catch a steamship, the staff is stolen and they must become involved with underground magicians outside of the Fée Gardiennes' purview in order to get it back.

I found the plot of book 2 to be a little but more compelling than book 1, even though it was a little bit less unique. As the story continued and more complications arose, though, it felt like there was a a lot more going on than what met the eye with the unfortunii. There were a few aspects of the plot that felt a little but underdeveloped to me.

Celeste still retains a level of naivety from being young, but she seems much more capable in this novel, especially now that she knows more about the Fée Gardiennes. I enjoyed continuing to learn about the Fée Gardiennes alongside Celeste, but it made me wonder why she knew so little of those who raised her.

I was hoping that there would be a little bit more romance in this book. After reading the Golden Age of Magic, I wanted to see Celeste's relationship with Nick develop more, but the opposite of that happened in the Gilded City of Dreams.

This series overall presents a neat view of the idea of fairy godmothers. It is fun, whimsical, and easy to read, but overall did not stand out too much to me. After reading book 1, I was not interested in continuing this series, but I was more drawn to New York as a setting rather than Hollywood and I wanted to learn more about the Fée Gardiennes. I think these two books worked well together as a cohesive duology that each had their own storylines.

I was provided an ARC of this book via Netgalley, all opinions are my own.

This is the second book in the Golden Age of Magic series, and while I do think you could get away with reading this as a standalone, I do think readers would benefit from reading book 1 first. The first book sets up things in this book and the Fée Gardienne aka Fairy Godmothers that main characters Celeste and Anaïs are members is explained. I think parts of this would be confusing if you haven't read the first book.

Celesete and Anaïs have found themselves in NYC on their way to Paris to return the elder staff to the new head of their order. The staff is stolen shortly after their arrival in the busy city and the pair is split up when their ideas on how to get it back differ. Celeste finds herself in the center of yet another magical mystery using her magical abilities and new aquiaintances to help not only find the staff but Anaïs as well. Anaïs on the other hand has her own ideas as to how to get the staff back from the darker side of the city's magic users.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. I loved the first book, and while Celeste does maintain a level of innocence and naivety in this she shows a level of confidence and capability that was missing in the previous installment. Now that she has proven herself she has really come into her magic and abilities. She is much more sure of herself. Anaïs being the much older mentor, is very confident almost to a fault, and always has a plan for every situation. I enjoyed watching these two women work together and separately to find the staff and figure out what was going on. I also liked that while there was a romance element to the book, it wasn't the main focus.

Magical storyline with two women in the glittering 1920’s who are entrusted with guarding the very special, enchanted, elder staff. They travel to NYC and are basically glued to it… until an unforeseen happening separates it from them! And then they spend pretty much the rest of the book trying to get it back!
Along the way they meet some wonderful characters, as well as MANY shady characters. Some seem to want to help them in their pursuit. Others want them dead! 😵

There’s magic. There’s enchantments. There’s robbers, and criminals and mobs and…. so much more!

I totally enjoyed this one, and I loved how they kept adding new people into the mix that brought with them all sorts of craziness that the women had to figure out as they went!

And I loved how Celeste was always getting herself into trouble by trying to do what she perceived as ‘the right thing’ to do…

And I also loved how Anais seemed to always figure out just what kind of trouble she was getting mixed up in!

4 solid, magical, sweet, sassy, women-must-stick-together stars for me! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

The Gilded City of Dreams by Luanne G. Smith follows Celeste and Anais in New York City as they embark on a new glittering adventure full of magic and mayhem.

Tasked with transporting the Fees Gardienne's elder wand from NYC to France, Celeste and Anais find themselves caught in a web of corruption in the gilded city. When the elder wand vanishes, and a secret underbelly of New York criminals crosses paths with the Fees, they begin to question if destiny is just a dangerous game of smoke and mirrors or a journey of gratitude, with a sprinkling of magic.

I have been a fan of Luanne G. Smith's books from the beginning as her whimsical historical fantasies always strike the perfect balance between heart and magic. The fairy godmother concept is original and the NYC setting in this book was the perfect backdrop for this adventure. It reminded me a little bit of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but that is meant to be a very high compliment. The magic, mishaps, and pacing were spot on, and the cover is very pretty. Perhaps the Fees element could have been featured more since the plot primarily focused on the skulks this time around? Or maybe the protégé element could have been included again instead of focusing more on other things which weren't as intriguing to me. The overall message of gratitude, the balance of life, and destiny were told through a fantastical story full of charm and sparkle that made this an easy yet entertaining read.

Overall I really liked this duology and I cannot wait to read more from Luanne G. Smith in the future.

In the second book of the Golden Age of Magic series, Celeste and her fellow fairy godmother Anaïs have been given the task of returning the sacred elder staff to Paris. The two Fée Gardienne set off for New York City to catch a steamship to France. . 1920s Big Apple roars with danger in ways Celeste and Anaïs never anticipated. Before they have even made it to their hotel, the staff, enchanted to look like an ordinary clarinet in it's case, is stolen. As the two women use their powers and their familiars to try to locate the staff and get it back, they fall prey to a mysterious band of kidnappers who are seemingly aware of the magical possibilities the stolen staff.

I always enjoy this author's books. This one was not my favorite, but still really good. It was full of action and suspense. I liked all of the magical elements, from the storefront that no one else seemed to be able to see, to the enchanted mask and staff, not to mention the spells they performed. I also loved their familiars, and how they were able to utilize them. My main complaint was the clunky dialogue. It took me out of the story at times. I did have the opportunity to both listen to the audiobook and read the ebook. I was hoping listening to the audiobook might be better with the the dialogue issue, since sometimes it lands differently, but it didn't make a difference. Overall, a solid 4 out of 5.

After falling in love with the whimsical magic of the first book, I was excited to dive into this sequel. While we previously saw Celeste in Los Angeles, this story follows her journey to New York as she and Anaïs attempt to bring the Elder Staff safely back to Paris. Of course, things don't go as planned, and they soon find themselves swept up in a new adventure that keeps them in the city. One of my favorite elements remains the deep connection between the Fée Gardiennes and their familiars. There is something so charming about the bond between these witches and their animal companions.

Luanne G. Smith’s writing style is a perfect match for portraying New York during the Prohibition. The city is full of hidden speakeasies and even better hidden magic, and because she is so talented at "show, don't tell," the world of speakeasies comes to life. The plot is suspenseful, and contains familiar themes from book 1, combined with new elements like the introduction of magicians. It was a wonderful experience to return to this world of magic in the Roaring Twenties, even though the first book remains my favorite. There was a specific sense of discovery and "newness" in the first book, that is hard to replicate, but this was still a fantastic and atmospheric follow-up.

Thank you NetGalley and Luanne G. Smith for this ARC!

THE GILDED CITY OF DREAMS is a wonderful alternate 20s mystery with magic that tickled my fancy. I'm ready for more with its fairy tale-esque character and the fight between good and evil.

Genre: Fantasy, Fairy Tale Adjacent, Mystery, Historical Fantasy
Audience: Adults (but I think older teens could read it)
Readability: This is book 2—read them in order for the best experience.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this new series with girls who are orphans that are brought up to become "fairy godmothers" and how they balance the bad in the world. It's unique because no one really gets a 100% happily ever after. But the evil forces want dominion over the earth and are pushing out the good as fast as they can.

I enjoy the characters, the magic, the broader world, and really, everything about it.

I recommend this as a fun read.

Happy reading!

My thanks for the ARC goes to NetGalley and 47North. All opinions are my own, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Format: Gifted ALC (audiobook)
Writing & Execution: 2.75/5
Overall Story: 3/5
Narration: 2.75/5
Enjoyment: 3/5

Pros:
- Mystery, Magic, and Mayhem
- Fast Paced & Easy to follow
- Fun and enjoyable use of familiar relationships and capabilities
- Interesting magic, artifact, and gifted power lore
- Atmospheric (loved the concept of magic in plain sight when it came to magically hiding buildings and use of speakeasies)
- Narrator did a good job capturing tone and expression.

Cons:
- Dialogue took me out of the setting/time period.
- Hooks you in the beginning, but loses you along the way.
- Better as an immersive read or just the physical read. Narration was alright but it would’ve made for a more captivating audio read with a multi cast.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this gifted audiobook listen. All thoughts are my own.

This is a worthy sequel to The Golden Age of Magic. It is the rare sequel that is better than the original novel. Smith is masterful at weaving foreshadowing throughout both books and showing, not telling. Her allusions to celebrities of 20th century Hollywood, and her capturing of California is truly magical and real to anyone who has lived in that part of the country.

The plot was gripping and is like a roller coaster. The reader never knows what is going to happen next.

Hopefully this is not the last part of this series, because these characters and setting are wonderful and a great summer read.

Smith closes the book with a wonderful ending that ties all loose ends. This series is a great fantasy for people who want a taste of magic without reading 600 page tomes.

4 ⭐️ First off thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this audioARC/eARC of the book. So I was able to do an immersive read. I have read all of her books so far and loved them all. This is the sequel to her book The Golden Age of Magic. Loved the plot and the characters. This book they are in 1920's New York. They are trying to get back to France with the magical staff but its stolen in the process. Celeste and Anais are trying to get it back and come upon a bigger plot. There's magic, mayhem, other magical beings, theft, deception, speakeasy's, some romance and more. I look forward to reading whatever she comes out with next. Yes I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy a good historical fantasy duology.

The story brings you along with two main characters through a world of magic and intrigue. You get a first hand view as the characters realize that their problems are deeper than they realize and work to solve them before it’s too late.
The author interweaves the world building into the story well, allowing you to learn alongside the characters while still remaining immersed in the story. She uses tension to pull you along in the story, excited to see what will happen next.
With magic, mystery, gangsters, and intrigue, the author takes you through twists and turns you could never predict.
I would definitely read this again!

This is my 8th book read by Smith and the least enjoyed--which says something about how much I've loved every single other book so far! But ultimately, I found this one uncharacteristically slow, cheesy, and young. The main characters are in their twenties, the setting is mostly speakeasies, and there's a handful of uses of the word "damn," but the overall vibe is very young. It feels very different from her Vine Witch and Photo series.

Good, but not great...But still look forward to more from her!

Thank you Netgalley and 47North for the chance to read The gilded city of dreams by Luanne G. Smith, the 2nd book in the Golden age of magic series. I read both books back to back, and while I had issues with the style of writing, I did enjoy the overall story. While the first book delves into Hollywood in the 20's, this time we are in New York during prohibition, and magic and speakeasies go hand in hand! This is another short read, and while I am unsure whether there will be another book, the author tied up all threads.

I started with this book - I have not read Book One. I really didn’t have any trouble getting into the story, but the background would have been helpful.
The novel moves quickly and introduces intriguing magical lore, though some character relationships and plot threads could have been explored more deeply.

Overall, The Gilded City of Dreams is filled with charm, suspense, and imaginative fantasy. Fans of historical fantasy, fairy-tale-inspired magic, and the Roaring Twenties will likely find the world of the Fée Gardiennes fascinating.

Fellow readers,

A wonderful and satisfying sequel to The Golden Age of Magic. I especially loved getting more Anis chapters! Celeste remains naive, but grows and learns to balance the good and bad parts of being a Fée Gardienne. Her emotional growth is not quick, but it is quite believeable. The mystery kept me reading onward and although main antagonist was unexpected, I felt the reveal and their motivations to be a bit flat. I love that Celeste was saved by the power of gratitude, even if it's a bit cheesy. As someone who enjoys being grateful for the small things, I found this message lovely and beautiful.

The Gilded City of Dreams also delved into the history of Fairy Godmothers and how new trainees are found. I loved experiencing this firsthand through Celeste and Anias. The side characters were very engaging and I think Tony and Nellie added humor and levity to the story. My only complaint is please give me more of the romance! Smith's ending was heartwarming and made me sad to leave these characters behind. Though I hear there may be a third book...

Thank you to Netgalley and 47North for the Advanced Reader Copy, I had a lot of fun reading this story and I'm looking forward to the next book and Smith's Vine Witch series.

I could not get into this one. Originally, a 1920s historical fantasy sounded so good (and I believe it could be) but this didn't hit the mark. The characters fell flat. The narrator barely kept me listening, and the storyline was just lacking. I felt like this story had good bones, and the writing was also done well, but as a whole, it just needed more work. I think that readers who enjoy a fast-paced fantastical mystery will enjoy this one more than I did.

A Great Follow-up

Book two picks up where book one ends. Celeste and Anais are making their
way back to France with a precious object. Stopping over in NYC, the object is stolen and the plotline flows from there. Anais and Celeste aren't the best of friends and are very different in nature. But they learn how to work together for the right cause. The NYC setting is very realistic, and the ending chapter referencing Celeste's proteges will be familiar to you.

This is the second book in The Gilded Dreams series. It isn’t a stand alone book so if you haven’t read the first book, The Gilded Age of Magic, I would encourage to do so. It follows fairy godmother, Celeste in the 1920s as she must recover a stolen relic after her partner, Anais goes missing. This is a fantasy with historical elements.

Thank you to 47North for the ARC through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Set in the 1920s, this is a fun gilded-age story of Celeste and Anais, two fairy godmothers, caught up in a whirlwind adventure from New York City to Paris, France. This book is trying to be a lot of things, but I'm not sure it really stands out in any of the areas: fantasy, mystery, historical fiction. It was just fine but not one I'd read again.

I’ll be honest I didn’t realize this was a sequel when I requested it, so I had to go and read the first book, which I wasn’t a fan of; this one is a bit better, but it still didn’t click for me, and despite the fast pace, I just wanted it to end. Overall, it was a pretty underwhelming read.

I really enjoyed this one! Even though it's the second book in the series, I had no trouble reading it as a standalone.

The 1920s New York setting mixed with fairy godmothers and magic made for a really fun combination. I liked Celeste as a main character, and the rest of the cast was enjoyable too. The story had a nice balance of adventure, magic, and mystery that kept me turning the pages.

My favorite part, though, was the ending. It wrapped things up in a really satisfying way while still leaving me interested in reading more of the series.

Overall, this was a fun historical fantasy with likable characters, an engaging story, and just enough magic to keep things interesting.
