This book has me with mixed feelings. Reading it, I got the impression that the author was a nice person who wanted to tell a good story and is invested in what she does. She is a new author to me and her book did not feel commercial to me. Just for that reason, I wanted to like the book. However, there were so many problems with the story that I wonder why a good editor did not flag them out for polishing.

Things I liked:

♟ It was quick to read, somehow I found it engaging enough to read and finish.

♟The outline plot was interesting and had great potential: a mafia family, a childhood family friend who disappeared on them due to a terrible secret, the eldest son in love and possessive of said friend, the sister being kidnapped, secrets on the past of the heroine, bigger war brewing...

♟ Nice, neat cover.

=======

Things I hated:

♟ The execution of the great plot was sadly lacking. The timeline was confusing, errors in events (even retcon attempts), contrived plot elements. And too much glossing over of key events, more tell than show e.g. the years the h, Kiara was on the run; the timeline and sexual assaults suffered by Kiara in her childhood - I did not need a graphical account, but the way it was handled was like, 'something terrible happened, oh so terrible, I never want to think of it'; Kiara suddenly saying she has physical triggers that never happen elsewhere when said triggering occurs.

♟ Initially, I did not understand why I found the conversations in the book weird and had systematically to re-read passages in order to understand what had happened. And then I realised that in most convos, the author associated a remark made by Character A with the reaction of Character B -- so that in the end, it is very unclear who said what. It got worse when there are more than two characters in a convo. I am no expert in English writing but so far I have never seen such a writing style employed in a book. Is that a usual style? If it is, I do find it irritating to read and hope I am not the only one. But I accept to be the weird one out if it is the case. Here is an example of what I am referring to:
[Chapter in Kiara's POV; Gage, Kiara's best friend appears and Bishop is furious and jealous at the intimacy between them; other family members are also present in this scene]

“Gage––” King cuts me off and I grit my teeth in frustration.

“Where is my sister?” Gage pulls his gaze from me to stare at King, his brows furrow in confusion and I can see already that he has no idea what the fuck King is talking about.

“I don’t know.” B grunts behind me and I know before he even speaks Gage just fucked up. No one is supposed to know about Carlina’s existence, Gage only knows about her because I told him.

“See, your answer should have been what sister, not I don’t know. So now, we’re going to have hurt you until you start speaking some fucking truth.” Gage’s gaze darts to me and I see it in his eyes, he’s about to shut off every emotion he has and go into fight mode. G is a sweetheart and protective as hell but don’t let that fool you, if you fuck with him or fuck him over, he will be the star of your nightmares.

I also realised that if only the author had pressed Enter at the end of each remark (or added usual cues to indicate who was talking), the convo would have made more sense, more easily. For example, twisting the above quote a bit:
“Gage––”, I begin, but King cuts me off and I grit my teeth in frustration.

“Where is my sister?” King growls.

Gage pulls his gaze from me to stare at King, his brows furrow in confusion and I can see already that he has no idea what the fuck King is talking about.

“I don’t know.”

B grunts behind me and I know before he even speaks Gage just fucked up. No one is supposed to know about Carlina’s existence, Gage only knows about her because I told him.

“See, your answer should have been what sister, not I don’t know. So now, we’re going to have hurt you until you start speaking some fucking truth.”

Gage’s gaze darts to me and I see it in his eyes, he’s about to shut off every emotion he has and go into fight mode. G is a sweetheart and protective as hell but don’t let that fool you, if you fuck with him or fuck him over, he will be the star of your nightmares.

Isn't it better? More clear, like it is usually done in books? Am I crazy? Is it just me? 90% of convos were like this!

♟ Many secondary characters seem to have inconsistent characterisation. For example, Knight was in turn caring and showing empathy to Kiara, and cold and suspicious. Okay, he has a secret trauma that will be explored in the series. But what about Gage who runs to reveal a big thing to Kiara behind Bishop's back and where Bishop has a hand in, and when Kiara breaks down, he immediately calls Bishop to comfort Kiara - why not approach Kiara in Bishop's presence in the first place? And Anthony who, upon seeing them cuddling, says that he won't ever support the relationship between Kiara and Bishop, but in the same convo offers his help to take down Bishop's enemy if Bishop proves he loves Kiara.

♟ Scenes lengthened artificially without anything really being settled. E.g Characters getting together for a discussion, only for them to break away in anger/ frustration/ being ordered out etc, because of some reveal but without the discussion happening. And then, five minutes later, same characters regroup to finish discussion... and again break away with the initial subject forgotten.

♟ Nonsensical passages where a convo starts on one element and then introduces a totally unrelated element. E.g. Gage approaches Kiara and tells her she needs to know something. He asks if she is aware that Bishop has mirrored her phone. When she says yes, he tells her that's not it but he has seen 'videos' of her. Kiara responds that Bishop swore he never recorded them. And Gage says it is not about Bishop. It is about videos made by Bishop's father.... I was like what? Why even start the convo about her phone in the first place?

♟ Typos/ grammar issues. I am usually pretty indulgent on those because they just happen sometimes. But in this book, the persistent repeat of the same things was irritating: The mis-use/ non-use of hyphens throughout the book; Eliciting not Electing; Barely not Barley.

=======

Funny things:

♟ All Murdoch boys are named after chess pieces (Bishop, King, Knight and Rook) but their sole sister is called Carlina? Why not Queen or Quinn?

♟ Carlina's existence is kept a secret to all Mafia families but the whole campus knows she is the sister of the 4 brothers?

♟ Two weeks with full focus on the sister's disappearance and still no leads? Years being a Don but not knowing other families in the city are against them? Really boys playing at being Mafia Men (the guys are all below 24)!

♟ Bishop being so trigger happy, quick as lightning to swipe out his gun, point at somebody and threaten to shoot them dead... for any slight 'offense'?

♟ Mafia calling 911 for a shoot out wound?

♟ Funniest quote, from Bonus epilogue:
[Wedding vows, Bishop to Kiara]

“I’ll love you more and more every day until the day I die, just know this though baby. There is no ‘Bishop would want me to move on and be happy, when I die your ass will be in the coffin with me because we go together always.” Laughter breaks out around us at my words.

=======

I still want to like the book because it was a sincere offer and the outline plot had potential. What a pity really! The use of a good editor would greatly improve things imho.

I had to DNF this at 23% and it’s not because the story line or characters didn’t seem interesting, but it’s because of how horrible the writing is. The dialogue between the characters seem like it was written by a teenager on wattapad. The timeline so far between kiara being missing and going through her traumatic situation and then ending up in a private highschool with her old friend does not add up. How old is bishop even ? I want to finish it because I’m intrigued but I don’t have it in me to read a book that makes me re-read portions of the chapter over because of how horrible the way of writing and dialogue is written. There’s one review under this booo that hit the nail on the head with everything.

Holy hotness!!! Played By The Bishop, the first book in the Murdoch Mafia series by Samantha Barrett is an absolute must read for anyone that loves domineering, OTT possessive alphas males and the heroines that capture their attention! No one can capture the heat more than Barrett and this book was definitely sizzling!!!

Our beautiful and fearless FMC Kiara has a tragic past—one that sent her running from everything she knew and loved three years ago and set her on a new path. However the past can never stay hidden for too long and everything soon catches up with her at her new school and her past trauma and issues come back with a vengeance in the form of the Murdock family. In particular Bishop, the new Don of the family.

And let’s just say that when their paths clash once again, secrets come to life and dang is it explosive!!! The fire between these two burns fast and hard and will take you on quite the ride as they each try to overcome the past and learn to trust all over again. However it’s not an easy road for these two—especially when outside forces step in and try to ruin everything. Enter in kidnapping, arranged marriages, hostile brothers and bam! This book has it all!

If you’re a fan of dark mafia, age gap arranged marriage romances featuring a feisty heroine and the hot possessive alpha male, then this is the one for you!!! Barrett masterfully brought these characters to life and knows how to keep the reader captive with off the charts chemistry and endless twists and turns, tensions and turmoil. And the setup for the next book is absolute perfection and I can’t wait for more of these sexy fearless domineering brothers!

Really enjoyable dark mafia romance. The story line kept me engaged and the spice was spicing. I’ll definitely be carrying on with series as the audiobooks are released.

The audiobook is narrated in dual by Elena Wolfe and Teddy Hamilton. High quality performances by both. Perfect for the characters they portrayed.

Really wanted to like this one, started out DETERMINED to like this one, sadly I DNFed at 48%. This was like a K-drama written by a 15 year old whose only knowledge of the mafia is The Sopranos re-runs. Mainly, the characters were so confusingly fickle and their feelings and emotions changed at any given instant for any reason and then changed right back a few pages later. She hated Bishop, she missed Bishop, she has a crush on Bishop, she blames Bishop for everything, she wants to marry Bishop, she wants to run away to Alaska, Gage is her best friend in the world, she finds out he was in on it this whole time, she feels betrayed...for 5 pages and then suddenly drags him along to make Bishop jealous...it was as exhausting as it was ridiculous. None of the timelines made sense from one moment to another. At one point Gage knew who she was and reported back all along, later he didn't know who she was and didn't tell anyone for months. This needed a really good editor...maybe a co-author who could come in, straighten up the timelines and firm up the characters emotions and motivations. Would be interesting in reading a similar story if the writing were better.

It's been three years and Kiara still suffers from the trauma inflicted by Tony Murdoch, head of the Murdoch mafia family. When she's offered a scholarship at an elite private school, she thinks of it as a fresh start and the beginning of something better. But rooming with Carlina Murdoch, her former best friend and daughter of the man who damaged her beyond repair, may be her breaking point.

When Bishop Murdoch found out what his father did to both Kiara and Carlina, it sent him into a blind rage and suddenly, he was the new don of the family. He spent years looking for Kiara and has only barely held onto the raging beast within him. She's the only one capable of taming him, and he'll stop at nothing to find and keep her. When he finally finds her, he, unbeknownst to her, offers her one last chance at freedom before he claims her for good -- he leaves her to enjoy her last year of school. But he's always watching, ready to intervene if necessary.

When Carlina gets kidnapped by someone linked to Kiara, Kiara finds herself back in the clutches of the Murdoch family. Who knows whether she'll get her freedom? Or if she'll die trying?

***************

Written in dual first-person POV, "Played By The Bishop" follows Kiara as she navigates through her trauma when confronted with her past and the possibilities of her future and Bishop attempts to navigate just who his enemies are and what he's willing to risk to have everything.

This book was fine. Enjoyable for the most part. But very triggering. The author offers a warning saying the book may be triggering before even getting to the book, so I have a lot of respect for that. Nor is the triggering content graphic in its representation, so great. But I wish they (SA/violence/abuse) were specifically named in that note, but moving on from that...

Kiara and Bishop were not that great together. It was kinda toxic. She, very obviously, had trauma from what she suffered at the hands of Bishop's dad, and still, some of the things that Bishop did should and would have triggered her. Bishop was possessive, often neglecting to consider her feelings when he was talking to or about her, and even though he knew what she suffered, he still did things anyway. But he did care for her in his own way, and he did tell her at one point in the book, but still...I kinda hated that. He did at least have the common sense of controlling himself around her for the most part, especially when her trauma hit her really hard. Kiara, on the other hand, was a fighter. She didn't let her trauma hold her back and down and she moved on with her life. But I really wish she would have fought harder for herself when it came to her romance with Bishop. She just bowed to him, mostly followed what he said, and forgave him when he was a jerk. He literally broke her heart and stomped on it before leaving her for a week, and then he came back to grovel for two minutes and they were back together. Like yes, she physically fought him a lot and she wasn't afraid to speak her mind for the most part, but it just rubbed me the wrong way with how simply she forgave him.

And then there was the conflict. Bishop's little sister and Kiara's (former) best friend gets taken and there are just no leads. Nothing. But there are suspicions of who did it, but they don't even piece together how close the bad guys are. It was positively infuriating. Yes, it's all better in the end and Carlina gets saved. But there are really no repercussions or lasting effects aside from Carlina wanting to travel on her own for a bit because she feels like she doesn't know where she fits into her family.
Even the "bad guy" gets what he wants in the end. There just didn't seem to be any pay-off for reading the conflict to the end.

At least the spicy scenes were enjoyable. Though some of them did rub me the wrong way a little bit.

If you like mafia romances with a bit of darkness and a happily ever after, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one at least a little bit. It was a quick, easy read for the most part. But if SA and violence trigger you, it may be in your best interest to avoid this book even though it is not necessarily graphic.

I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

OMG this book was amazing, I could not put it down. Firstly it does have some triggers so be warned. I am in love with Bishop. This man is just devine, the way he is the big tough Don yet putty in Kiara's hands. This has a lot of love/hate between many characters but the way it all falls together is brilliant. This book has so many twists and turns and keeps you constantly on edge. Anyone who reads this will 100% not be disappointed, it really is good.

A great mafia tale with enough twists to give you a pretzel hankering.

“No,baby, you are a f**king prize”

Bishop is tough, enigmatic and a bit of an a**hole but we all love that right?

Kiara is a tough woman with a traumatic past and yet she’s tougher than you can imagine. Surprising everyone around her.

Loved the scenes with Bishop and Kiara. Absolutely magnetic.

"You and your brothers are named after chess pieces, yet you play like checkers."

Need a short spicy Mafia read? This book has you covered.
Blood, guns, 'You're mine' , spice, betrayal, secrets, and twists that you had no idea that were coming! Yes, please.

I enjoyed reading about the start of the Murdoch brothers' lives with Bishop and Kiaras' journey, so being first crushes to end game. But is it? This is book 1 in a 6 book series, and I can't wait to continue on.

I love Samantha’s fantasy novels and her first dive into mafia has not disappointed me. She brings her familiar writing style with the family feel to this new series. It’s one of my fave things about Samantha’s books. Falling in love with all the characters and not just the main ones. Which means I cannot wait to continue on in the series for there stories.
Well done on smashing your first mafia book out of the park Samantha. The chemistry was hot, the plot was spot on, the characters were well written. Bring on book 2.

This is the first book in the Murdoch Mafia series and boy was it good. It will have you hooked from the minute you start reading right up until the end.
Bishop is my new favourite book boyfriend and he is absolutely delicious. I love myself an overprotective, over obsessive Don that won’t take no for answer.
Kiara had a hard life and was running away from her past until the past caught up with her and she had to face her demons.

If you have read any of Samantha’s prn stories you would know her style of writing is next level. She we above and beyond with this dark mafia romance and she did it justice.

I highly recommend this especially if you love mafia romance, age gap, feisty heroine, arranged marriage and hot af alpha male.
Then this book is for you .
Also please check trigger warnings.

Can’t wait for the second one…

I really couldn't stand the female protagonist anymore. Her mood changed costantly. The plot was really interesting, and even if the book is short it wasn't feeling rusched, but the constant mood changes of the heroine desroyed all the good that the story had.

I absolutely loved this story! This was a great series starter and I loved getting to know the Murdoch family and can't wait for more of the family's stories! There are a lot of twists and turns in this one and things that you don't see coming, others you do. There are lots of secrets and truth bombs that get dropped throughout the story and it definitely keeps things moving along. This story does have a darker component to it but both of our characters are strong and fighters and that absolutely plays a part as well. Overall, I didn't think it was very dark though the characters do operate in the mafia world and so there is fighting and killing as to be expected. I loved how Kiara held her own with everything going on and didn't just bow down or give up. The sexual chemistry was off the charts and things were definitely spicy. I loved watching these two come together as they really were good together they just have a lot thrown at them that they are trying to deal with. This was a great story and I am super excited for the next one!

What kind of crack is this?!

Warning highly addictive

This book got me out of a reading slump then gave me the biggest book hangover in months!

The murchodochs, where do I even start!
While all from the same family they are so vastly different with dark pasts and hidden secrets, did I mention they are hawt.

Fmc is a bad ass with a traumatic past I enjoyed watching her grow and I hope she still makes an appearance in the upcoming books.

I'm can't wait to dive back into this world and watch the Empire grow.

Thankyou to Samantha for an arc in exchange for an honest review

Played by the Bishop was mouth watering and mind blowing. So hot and sexy I loved Bishops dominance. I also loved Kiera when she was fighting with the boys hehe. Those scenes had me giggle. I love these brothers and I can't wait to read Kings book next so I can find out what happened. Especially to Knight and what they were hinting at has me nervous I love the Twins Rook and Knight alot. And Car im excited to see who she gets tangled with. Gage now him had me wanting this to be a M/F/M book because he loves Kiera so much. But it does have me looking forward to the moment he finds a woman who would burn the world for him. I'm hooked on this family.

Where to begin…

I was hooked from the very beginning. Samantha does a wonderful job bringing the characters to life and there’s never a dull moment within this book. Around every turn is a twist, and it urges you to continue.

This is a short read, and it contains lots of steam. I loved Bishop’s character, but I’ve low key been shipping Kiera with King the entire time, LOL. I knew it wasn’t going to happen.

Mixed feelings

I’m not entirely sure how to rate this book, and I’ll try to explain why. This was a new to me author and the first book in a series. I feel like it had a lot of potential. A lot. But it also has a lot of flaws, which dropped my rating down.

Me meet Kiara and she begins her final year of high school on scholarship at a prestigious school, with hopes of graduating and moving far away. Only she finds her roommate is her former best friend, who is a part of the family she fled from years ago.

My first gripe was that I really wish they had been university students, and not high school seniors. It really didn’t feel authentic tbh. We were to believe the behavior of these girls was that of 17 and 18 yo girls. And Kiara, who fled to escape after years of being r@ped by the Murdoch father Tony shows very little trauma. She mentioned the word trigger once but it was never displayed again. And she went from disdain to riding Bishop with the blink of an eye, even while in the room where most of her abuse happened. He comments that she gives BJ’s like a pro, and their bedroom scenes are corn star worthy. Like no teenager is banging like that, sorry. I would have believed it more if she weren’t still essentially a child and only three years after escaping her abuser.

Bishop is older, though I’m not sure we know exactly by how many years. He has offed his father after learning of the abuse against his sister and Kiara. He seems like a baby Don. Kiara’s father commented near the end of the book that all of the brothers were named after chess pieces, but were playing checkers. It was a pretty good analogy. They did not really seem like effective or successful members of the mafia. They definitely sort of seemed like teenagers playing the part. I’m surprised they haven’t been taken out by this point tbh.

My biggest issue is the editing. The storyline premise is good (although again, I’d have made the girls university age). I really liked it. The editing and formatting is atrocious. Seriously. Someone needs to go over the story and clean things up. Some of the characters have complete personality changes or inconsistencies, some things that didn’t need to be there, but the worst offense is the way you cannot tell who is talking ever in runs of continuous dialogue. It’s truly bizarre. There will be a statement made by someone, followed immediately by a reaction by someone else. In normal literature, that would imply the words were spoken by that person. But not here. For example “I smirked” is following a line of text spoken to them instead of by them. It’s very hard to have any idea who is saying what, particularly in a long conversation. Had they simply hit the enter key after the dialogue, it would’ve separated it and made it more clear to follow.

So I’m torn. Good outline, good storyline premise. Just lacking in execution. It was a quick read, and I did stay interested and wanted to see how things played out. Im just not sure if I’ll continue the series.

So many twists and turns in this book that will have you consumed from the start.

I don't know how I ever missed this book before now, but WOW, oh WOW, was I hooked by this one! If you love mafia books, this is one to definitely grab. It's full of secrets and lies that just keep going as the story unfolds.

You follow Bishop Murdoch, the newly crowned donn of his mafia family, after he kills his father. Not all know why he took his father's life, but now he's the boss, and his brothers are his right-hand men as they become one of the five mafia families in New York city now. He tries righting the wrongs his father has done while fighting his ever growing obsession with his younger sister's former best friend Kiara. He has a warring battle of feelings when it comes to her and feels disgusted that he has such intense feelings for her with a six year age gap between them. But now, with Kiara back and turning eighteen, all bets are off, and he can't stop what has already been put into motion long ago. If you love tatted, broody, cocky/arrogant at times, and dirty taking mafia boss, then you are gonna love Bishop!

Kiara is a feisty and bad a$$ character that has been on the run since fifteen, but now, at eighteen and a new scholarship to an elite private school that looks like a fresh start only becomes a bit more than she vould ever realize. Unfortunately for this girl from the wrong side of the tracks, things aren't as easy as they appear. Rooming with her former best friend Carlina has a lot of challenges for her. Fighting a trauma from years past has her pulling away from her friend and questioning Bishop and his intense behavior for her now. As she is pulled back into the Murdoch family once again, secrets and lies start being uncovered as the story unfolds.

If you need an intense wild ride that will consume you from the start, grab this book. It's filled with secrets and lies that just keep coming as the story progresses, and with a swelteringly off the charts spice that will have you heating up fast. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger to set up the next book in the series as King's book. The underboss to his older brother Bishop that has his own secrets and twists coming next. This is definitely a book you need to grab and get lost in for sure.

The premise of the book was good. The characters were good ideas with ok development. There were some challenges reading this book. First the way it was structured made it really hard to tell who said what. Second, some of the narrative was just plain hard to follow. It was like the author was trying to leave breadcrumbs for future development but then wouldn't come back to them or ever reference them again. Characters had massive behavioral changes (Car and King) but it wasn't really described why. I know there are 5 other books in this series and maybe they get resolved in those characters' own books, but it was needless and confusing in this one.

Quinn had absolutely no purpose at all and only lead to confusion. He was and then wasn't Kiara's brother. He was and then wasn't Car's forced husband. The author made it sound like Car was abused by him during her captivity but then Anthony says no one touched her. Car smiled when she shot him in the head...it all doesn't make sense. Also, the whole twisted path of Kiara's parents isn't needed. It didn't add anything to the story. Also, I thought it was wierd that Kiara's mom was still alive. She sold her daughter and put her in repeated danger. I figured someone would have taken her out right after Tony.

We learn Knight may have a dark past (trauma), that only Bishop knows about and his tormentor is a woman who is dead but Bishop doesn't know who killed her and we don't know why. It sounded like it might have something to do with King's former love, but again, never development further.

The choking is out of control. Bishop has been in love with Kiara for a few years, he even has a tatoo of her name. But he chokes her to blacking out whenever he's really mad. Also, overall their ages creep me out. Kiara is 18 and a senior in high school but is portrayed as very sexually experienced. Bishop is around 22 but supposedly runs a NY mafia family. He killed his own father at around 19 and has been the leader since. I could buy the killing his dad part but the running a mafia family and part is too much.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️/5
Spice: 1/2 🌶️/5
MFC: was not a fan of Kiara.
MMC(s): Bishop acted like a unruly teenager.
Plot: 2/5
Book cover: 5/5
Would I buy a physical copy?: No.

I wanted to love this. The cover caught my eye, the synopsis intrigued me but the story just… wasn’t it.

The timelines/big moments are confusing. Dialogue was odd to read. Kiara’s reaction to her supposedly childhood ‘bff’ was overly harsh compared to seeing the twins. Same with King and Bishop.

Don’t even get me started on the fact that Car opened up about her trauma and Kiara straight up shut down. I get it, not everyone wants to rehash their past but if I was Car, I would’ve took it beyond personal after sharing something so personal, something we had in COMMON.

Honestly, everyone’s reactions were SO over the top it was cringy. Knight was kind to her and then all the sudden was an asshole and couldn’t be near her? King swept her up in a hug and then proceeded to call her ‘distracting pussy’ only chapters later. Bishop reminded me of an aggressive teenager who felt he had the power to do and say what he wanted, but he obviously didn’t when Anthony put him in his place at the hospital. Super unattractive, and made him look incredibly weak as a ‘Don’. Rook was the only one who was kind to her throughout the damn book. And then Gage! I don’t know how she didn’t see his betrayal for what it was.

Let’s not forget that the guys’ sister was missing the whole time and when it came to Kiara needing to step up and help (like she kept insisting she would do) she decided she either needed a shower, to sleep with Bishop or to get to class first. UM WHAT?? Terrible friend. Also, she held a grudge against Bishop for what their father did… why?? That was never explained. Kiara said no one knew what happened so why single out Bishop like that?

The cover of this is gorgeous, same with Kings’ book which is next.

Wanted to love it, but it just didn’t hit the mark

As someone who genuinely enjoys mafia romance with all its dark themes, power dynamics, and emotional intensity, I went into Played by the Bishop excited for a gritty, angst-fuelled ride. Unfortunately, this one missed the mark for me.

While the premise had promise and I liked the idea of the complex history between Bishop and Kiara, the execution felt lacking. The writing style came across as quite elementary at times, and the plot often felt like an afterthought. It was more a series of semi-dramatic events strung together than a cohesive story arc. Unfortunately for me it felt like a YA book that someone came and sprinkled a few 🐓 references into.

Character development felt rushed. The back-and-forth between the MMC and FMC (“yes, no, yes, no”) wasn’t the slow-burn tension I love. It felt more like emotional whiplash that made it hard to connect with them. The dialogue didn’t help either. It was often erratic and hard to follow, which pulled me out of the story rather than drawing me in.

The big reveal toward the end fell flat for me. The build-up wasn’t there, the scene wasn’t set well, and it just didn’t land with the emotional impact it clearly aimed for. The subplot involving King had potential but felt underdeveloped. It seemed like it was mainly included to set up book two rather than serve this story.

And for a dark mafia romance? The spice was disappointing. The sex scenes lacked heat and chemistry, which is a shame considering the tension the genre thrives on.

All in all, Played by the Bishop wasn’t a total miss. It had glimmers of intrigue. But the execution didn’t live up to the potential. If you’re a die-hard mafia romance fan, it might still be worth the read, but manage expectations.

Review:

Played By The Bishop by Samantha Barrett is an emotionally charged and beautifully written romance that captures the complexities of love, heartbreak, and sacrifice. The book offers a powerful story filled with passion, unexpected twists, and heart-wrenching moments, making it a compelling read for fans of romance with deep emotional stakes.

At the heart of the story is a love that has stood the test of time—one that is both tender and bittersweet. The quote, "I've loved you most of my life and I'll love you in the next one as well. Goodbye, my love," perfectly encapsulates the deep, enduring connection between the main characters. It speaks to the kind of love that transcends time and space, making the moments of loss even more poignant.

Barrett’s writing is heartfelt and vivid, drawing readers into the emotional struggles of the characters. The romance is both passionate and raw, capturing the highs and lows of a relationship built on years of history and unspoken feelings. The tension and chemistry between the protagonists add to the intensity of the story, keeping readers engaged and invested.

While the pacing occasionally feels rushed, especially during some key emotional moments, Played By The Bishop still succeeds in delivering a satisfying and emotional love story. Samantha Barrett has crafted a tale of love that lasts beyond one lifetime, and the characters’ journey will stay with you long after the final page.

Overall, Played By The Bishop is a touching and captivating romance that explores the power of love and the sacrifices we make for those we hold dear. If you enjoy stories filled with heartfelt emotion and a timeless connection, this book is one you won’t want to miss.

OMFG !!!! I’m not even sure I can put into words how truly phenomenal this book was and is . Played By The Bishop is a must read for. Anyone who is a fan of Dark Mafia Romance. Speechless , mind completely blown away , on the edge of my seat anticipating what was going to happen from one second to the next . Those are only a few things I felt while reading what was easily one of the best books I’ve read in the past few months. This was actually my first time reading one of Samantha’s books ( a fact I really cannot believe ) so I was honestly not so sure what I was getting into when I first sat down and started. But before I knew quad was happening I so quickly found myself falling in love with some of the most wonderfully written characters. Characters that are so captivating, so unique and extremely multi layered and a storyline that is just guaranteed to grab onto all your emotions so fast and pull at your heartstrings in ways you certainly will not be expecting. I do not want to give any details away in regards to the storyline as you get get a pretty good idea of what it’s about from the summary. But what I will say is that it’s been a while since I’ve come across a book that has had the ability to hold my attention or stir as many different emotions in me the way Played By The Bishop has . It’s intriguing, suspenseful, dark , raw , gritty and emotionally charged , it’s filled with twists and turns, non stop action, tragedy, drama , off the charts chemistry, family , friendships, second chances, awesome world building, and so much more then words can express. In short it’s a masterpiece

DNF at 35%.

Nah because what even is this.

The story/plot definitely had potential, but the execution was really not my cup of tea. I get the book is short-ish but did it need to jump into the plot that fast?

The dialogue is so confusing, you can hardly tell who is talking half the time. You will have one character talking but the description that usually follows the dialogue is a completely different characters 'actions' or whatever. Another reviewer, 'Grisette' explains this waaay better than me.

Also felt like the way the characters were introduced into the scenes/left the scenes was confusing. Honestly the writing in general was not it, felt very 2015 Wattpad.

One minute the FMC is all giggly and kissing the MMC and then 5 minutes later she's all 'I hate you grrr'. *scratches head* Also, at any slight offense Bishop is all like 'grrrr move and I'll shoot you', 'don't touch her or I'll shoot you.' Calm down. It's not that serious. He's toooo trigger happy.

And why did Bishop also get fully undressed after he told Kiara to go take a shower (where she proceeded to undress to catch him off guard or whatever). *scratches head* Like? Got undressed just to get dressed 2 minutes later and go do his mafia business.

Also, probably just a me thing, but I got so confused with all the Murdoch boys being named after chess pieces. Like I literally forgot who was who.
