Cecile (Ceil) Węta Jensen's novel, Coral Beads and Poppy Seeds, is a tale of four Polish women who meet on their voyage to America in 1890 and whose lives become entwined beyond their youthful imaginings. Anna from Russian Poland, Julia from West Prussia, Marianna from Posen, and Beata from Galicia navigate their way in Detroit, a thriving hub of commerce and industry.
Beautifully written, well researched, and a gorgeous design! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this historical fiction novel, loosely based on the author's family's migration from Poland to Michigan. The four characters lives intertwine in unexpected ways. The novel is a real page-turner. It is also a feast for the eyes, with a full color inside, lots of thoughtful details and custom artwork. I learned a lot about Polish culture. I also enjoyed the Polish recipes in the back along with the author's family photos who the book was inspired by. Loved every page- highly recommend!
