The Wild Hunt #1

What Fools These Immortals Be

Rate this book
I serve the Wild Hunt. I work alone. And neither of those things is going to change.

Serving the Wild Hunt has made up the majority of my undead life, and I have never before felt the urge to truly disobey one of the Huntsman’s orders. But when he comes to me, commanding me to watch over London’s vampire crai, I find myself strangely resistant to his plan.

This crai is overwhelmed and overworked and not at all the kind of vampire I want to get to know. His new suits might chafe, but he is nowhere near wild enough for me.

Until he reveals all the dark urges he’s been hiding. Until we find ourselves trying to track down a dangerous high fae, and placate a vengeful vampire, and I realise at some point, somehow, Njáll’s wellbeing has become… important to me.

I know how disobeying the Huntsman will end. He takes back his blessing, and I lose the one part of myself that makes me feel truly alive.

I serve the Hunt.

But perhaps I can still serve Njáll, too.

What Fools These Immortals Be is an MM urban fantasy featuring a snarky, fae-blessed vampire and the crai he does not want to protect. It contains steamy scenes and all the violence—and blood—you might expect from a vampire romance. This is the first in a six-book series, and each book will feature a different relationship within one overarching plot.

I was genuinely disappointed with this book. I had high hopes, as it seemed to have everything I usually enjoy—engaging characters, an intriguing premise, and a hint of romance. However, the execution ultimately fell flat.

The first half of the book was relatively enjoyable; while I wasn't convinced it would become one of my favorites, I appreciated the developing chemistry between Maurice (a name I'm not particularly fond of) and Njáll. Their interactions were playful and charged, drawing me into their world and making me root for them.

Unfortunately, everything unraveled in the second half. When a plot relies on characters acting irrationally to create tension, the book has already lost me. After Maurice and Njell were separated, their relationship took a dramatic downturn, exposing numerous issues that had been glossed over.

For instance, their love felt shallow and underdeveloped. They spent such a limited amount of time together that it was hard to believe their feelings ran deep. The moments when they expressed their affections came across as forced and lacking authenticity, which diminished the emotional impact of their connection.

Adding to my disappointment, the side characters were generally unlikable and often hypocritical, failing to add any depth to the narrative. The worldbuilding also left much to be desired; critical elements of the setting were sketched out but not fully explored, leaving me with lingering questions and a sense of dissatisfaction.

The frustrating part is that I could see the potential for this to be a compelling story. The seeds of a great book were there, yet so many pieces just didn’t come together cohesively. Ultimately, it felt like a missed opportunity.

It was good (could’ve been great) but the writing needed a little more work.

Thank you to Alexandra Keillor and Gay Romance Reviews for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

WHAT I LIKED
Premise. Love me some mischievous fae any day!
World building. It helps that there’s a separate connected series that lays a good foundation. I’ve not read it so my assessment is based solely on two things: i) how much it enriches this book, and ii) how well the author integrates call backs to those events. Both are done well.
Character development. Again, the connected series helps. Though some of the characters were a little tropey, most were dynamic and engaging.

WHAT NEEDED WORK
The writing.
❎ Firstly, we needed a better intro for the huntsman. I’ve referenced the existence of a connected series but this one is meant to be read as a standalone and while everyone was trembling in fear / awe at the huntsman, I felt nothing because all I’d seen him do was threaten people a little bit.
❎ Second, Maurice
❎ Finally, this needed one more round with an editor to cut away multiple verbose passages that involved too much telling and not showing (tbh, this is the only reason I won’t be reading the second book).

Expect
- Dislike to lovers
- Forbidden romance
- Forced proximity
- Bonding
- Mates

A spin-off from Alexandra Keillor’s Monsters of London series, What Fools These Immortals Be is a fun first book in this new series about the Wild Hunt. We’re back in MoL universe, but with new characters, new conflicts and intriguing politics while supernatural factions struggle to maintain a fragile peace in a post-Tamesis world. While the book can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the Monsters of London series for a better understanding of the connections and relationships between supernatural factions – vampires, werewolves and hunters.

The story follows Njáll and Maurice. Njáll is now leading the London vampires as Crai, not truly believing he is cut out for the role. While Maurice is a stoic member of the Wild Hunt assigned as Njáll’s reluctant bodyguard. At the beginning, it feels like a paranormal ‘unlikely duo’, or better yet a buddy cop vibe. You know - two guys, one(ish) mission, zero emotional availability. But as the plot thickens, as they say, Njáll and Maurice’s relationship quietly shifts into something more complicated and emotionally intense. With political tensions, vanishing fae, and shifting power between supernatural groups, neither of them is looking for romance. Yet when it starts happening, to both of their surprises, it just works, and it’s hard not to root for them. There’s some mutual pining, humour, but also loyalty and romantic tension. While I would have liked for a bit more build-up of their feelings, or more emotional depth, I have to say that the connection and chemistry do grow naturally throughout the book. They are both strong, stubborn, have trouble asking for help, and are kind of terrible at expressing themselves.🙄 But there’s snarky banter, and that’s always a good thing in my book. 😉

That said, the romance itself doesn’t dominate the story. I really loved that we get to explore complex issues like justice, accountability, and morally grey areas in a supernatural context. Alexandra isn’t afraid to tackle big questions, like could you (and how) hold someone accountable for something they didn’t exactly choose to do, when one is not fully innocent or guilty. I was impressed with the way she kept everything built around the characters and their personal stakes, so it never felt preachy or too heavy.

The world-building remains one of the great features of this world, and the author just keeps on building on it. Here, we get the expansion of lore surrounding the Wild Hunt and the fae, as well as political world-building post-Tamesis, which I think is going to continue throughout the series.

What Fools These Immortals Be is a strong start to a new series, and I’m definitely excited to see where it goes next.

I received a copy of this book from the author, and this is my unbiased review.

I go back and forth on how I feel about this author's writing. I really enjoy their writing and the world-building and paranormal elements always impress me. However, at times I struggle with some of the characters and feeling like maybe they aren't in a place to earn their love stories quite yet.

This leaned far into the "hot d*mn; I'm impressed" realm. I loved the snark and humor woven between our MMCs. Njall and Maurice's romance was everything and I was rooting for them from the beginning.

Fantastic new series with a familiar setting but fun new characters and a spicy new pairing!

I really enjoyed this one! I was invested in the overarching plot. New vampire crai politics. Inside the mysterious “Hunt”. Plus a few cameos from previous characters. And the beginning feels almost like a buddy cop read. Lots of fun.

Add in the romance? I wasn’t expecting a romance between Maurice and Njall and neither were they! But as soon as we get a heated glance, i was ALL IN. Loved the mutual pining. And appreciated their need to get back to each other over and over again despite extenuating circumstances.

READ FOR
- m/m romance
- paranormal/vampire romance
- political intrigue

We are back in London, back on familiar ground with a lot of familiar characters. I really enjoyed seeing some of my favourite characters from the Monsters of London series. This series is separate from that, so you can read it and follow along without problems.
As usual, Alexandra Keillor weaves a story that is riveting, fast paced and action packed and I enjoyed every moment of it. Maurice and Njáll's relationship does take a bit of a backseat because of the plot and the need to set up the whole series, but in all honesty I didn't mind it. There was enough going on romantically between them that it kept me interested, plus the whole story was very riveting and I was curious to see what will happen next. This world that the author created is a very interesting one and there are always new things to learn about it, and I enjoy that a lot.

A very interesting story about vampires, fae, werewolves and the like. This book will keep you on the edge of your seats and you'll be wanting the next book as soon as possible.

I’ve come back to edit my review as I reread this in prep for starting book 2.

I’ve read the four books in this author’s Monsters of London series and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I’m also a Brit so it’s nice reading a book set here, it just adds that extra dynamic for me personally.

Now, could you read as a standalone? I suppose you could, but I think you’d really struggle. There’s reference to past events that had, and continue to have, a huge knock on impact on our MC (Niall) who basically now has to lead the London vampires as a result. There’s multiple discussions as to what happened in the previous series, and as a fae was involved, and this series is clearly going to feature fae heavily, I do think you need to read the other series first (it is awesome btw so well worth it).

I enjoy political shenanigans and this had lots - inner workings of leading the vampires in London, working with the hunters and wolves, plus the new Wild Hunt involvement. We also had the tension/intrigue around the wider plot issues with the fae/Wild Hunt. So I really liked that element of the book. I’m also a fan of supernatural and world building that isn’t ’info dumping’ as that just frustrates me. So lots of positives for me. Not really any negatives to complain of.

I thought the romance side of things was fine, as this was more about the emotional connection than just sex. Maurice gave up something very significant to him to be with Niall, and for me, showing that depth of connection was a million times better than OTT sex scenes. If you’re looking for sex heavy then this is not it, we had maybe 2 sex scenes, and a bit of primal play (hunting to feed, not just hunting for sex).

I’m glad I read this and got more of our Monsters of London crew. I’m looking forward to more in this world. Book 2 looks like it is going to be really good.

I received this as an ARC from gayromancereviews.com and these are 100% my own thoughts. I own the Monsters of London series and was intending to read this anyway so getting the ARC was a bonus!

I felt like I needed a damn flow chart when I started this book. There’s a lot of history that’s happened and is casually being brought up in monologue. It’s… A LOT. So many people, so many moving parts, so many damn clans! All the history is being shoved in-between casual conversations during what seems to be a dinner party or something? Case in point; I don’t even understand what this gathering is about other than an exchange of power maybe? I was so lost and confused all it did was irritate me and this is only chapter 2. Chapter 6 and I’m still lost. It’s beyond frustrating. There really should have been a detailed prologue of the past scuffle (or whatever because I’m still lost) that apparently is still a big damn deal. After a few more confusing and muddled interactions I couldn’t take it anymore. I still don’t understand half of what I’m reading. It seems like I’m missing entirely too much information to enjoy this story. Is there a previous series that needs read before this one? If so, that’s unfortunate since this is the first book in a series.

As a big fan of Alexandra Keillor’s Monsters of London series, I was eager to dive into What Fools These Immortals Be, which is the start of their new series, The Wild Hunt. While this book is set in the same world, with characters appearing from the prior series, it is not essential to have read those books as this offers a new storyline. The relevant aspects are all explained, allowing the reader to dive right into this story. However, I certainly recommend reading the Monsters of London series as it is a wonderful series and it will allow the reader to enter this world with knowledge and appreciation for the wider characters.

While I enjoyed What Fools These Immortals Be and am eager to see where the series heads, I will be honest and say that I did not enjoy it quite as much as I enjoyed the books in the Monsters of London series. The overarching storyline was great, sucking me in with ease and leaving me eager for what is to come next. There is a lot I want to learn more about – events, the wider supernatural world(s), and characters. However, as much as I loved the bigger picture, I will say that the romance did not work for me in the way I had hoped. Although I did find the characters worked well together, the relationship felt forced. I never believed in them despite the fact there was every reason for them to be working well together. I think, in part, this is because the romance was overshadowed by the overarching plot. I think, also, it is because of how I compared it to the way the romance played out in the Monsters of London series, where the plot and romance seemed to be more equal. Despite this, it was not enough to lessen my enjoyment of the story. I am super eager to see what happens in the next book and will be eagerly devouring this series as I did the Monsters of London series.

All in all, fans of the Monsters of London series are sure to be sucked into this extension of the world. For new readers, it will certainly leave them eager to find out more.

I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

Ahhh i loved being back in Alexandra Keillor's Monsters of London world!!! What Fools These Immortals Be kicked off a new set of adventures featuring The Wild Hunt and oooh it was so much fun!

There was still the drama tied to the coexistence of all the worlds and their power and protection dynamics!

But, regarding the romance bit to this, this first book felt lighter than MoL, as the emotional piece between Maurice and Njáll came out of...not nowhere per se, but like NOT from a lot, if i'm being honest.

Not that i was expecting a super deep love connection or anything, but there was more:

1 worldbuilding energy, like for the Pub/bars, the Goodfellow vibes (Shakespeare/Puck management) iykyk, WHICH I OBVIOUSLY LOVED AND WISHED THERE WAS MORE OF TBH!

And

2 the selkie/fae action and the drama tied to that business which, AGAIN, i love and will always want more of

than

there was time spent in developing whatever it was that sparked between the MCs. Not a bad thing by any stretch, but i would have liked a bit more chemistry and a touch more romance before the ilys. But ofc this could just be a me thing so ymmv.

What Fools These Immortals Be was still a really good time, and i'm looking forward to all of the other exciting adventures still to come, because this first installment had all the delicious makings of another fabulous series from Keillor that i'm sure i'll enjoy just as much as Monsters of London! Can't wait!

*I got an arc*

CW: graphic sex, kidnapping, power imbalances (not in romantic relationships)

I've really been enjoying this world and was thrilled to see an arc for the spin-off series (especially since "What Fools These Immortals Be" is an excellent title).

In this book, the supernatural beings of London are still coming to grips with a post-Tamesis world: what does collaboration between species look like? How are conflicts resolved? "What Fools These Immortals Be" follows Njall (now Crai-- the leader of the London vampires) and his bodyguard Maurice (a member of the Wild Hunt) as they navigate the feelings they definitely do not have for each other as well as conflicts that threaten to destablise the peace treaties between species. To make matters worse, Maurice's feelings for Njall go against explicit instructions from the Huntsman-- one of the most powerful beings in the world. Njall & Maurice must navigate their conflicting loyalties while trying to discover why so many fae are crossing over to Earth: and what will happen if they aren't stopped.

***

I've really been enjoying this world! As someone with a degree in Transitional Justice, I thoroughly enjoyed how Alexandra Keillor illustrated the struggles of evolving a justice system: how can society punish someone for a crime they had no choice but to commit? But, if someone is murdered, how can they not? There simultaneously are no right answers but so many wrong answers and this book illustrates that beautifully.

First book in the spin off from the author's debut series Monsters of London.

I'm happy to know that there will be six book in this series, I really like this world and I especially wanted to know more about the wild hunt and the fae.

Njáll and Maurice are really great, I couldn't get enough of their interactions and the way their relationship developed was perfect. I don't know how the author does it, but there was a great balance between the overall plot, the personal struggles each of our main leads had and the medium burn romance between them that it's impressive how much happened but still everything was properly addressed.

I especially loved seeing Njáll gaining confidence bit by bit and voicing his thoughts more. Maurice was a darling, the epitome of cold on the outside but soft inside. I enjoyed seeing him standing up for what he believed in even if it went against the norm.

And the wild hunt, when the two members disappeared in Monsters of London I was already curious about them, we still don't know what's been of them yet but I will impatiently wait until they get their own book. And now there's new to us members with the author only giving us some crumbs to keep us interested, so evil but I like it.

I can't wait for the next books.

POV: mostly dual until the last chapter told from the next book's main lead pov.
Tropes: vampire/vampire, bodyguard, primal play, found family.
Spice: medium (detailed scenes)
CW: blood, kidnapping, violence, death.

The London paranormal community returns in a new series called The Wild Hunt. Maurice serves the Wild Hunt and is not happy with his new assignment. He is to keep the new vampire crai safe. It turns out that Njáll is experiencing some problems with his new job. He is overworked, overwhelmed and not at like what Maurice thought. Now the two are on the trail of a powerful high fae while also dealing with a vengeful vampire. At the same time, they find some things they have in common.

This promises to be another exciting series, just as fantastic as Monsters of London. The mysterious Huntsman is someone to be loved, hated, and feared. As head of the Wild Hunt, it is he who give Maurice his orders and it is he with whom Maurice struggles. When Maurice first meets Njáll, he is not so sure about him. He does notice everything about Njáll and is willing to give him what he needs. Neither one wanted the other in their life but find they gradually come to want more. It was gratifying to watch their romance progress. The ending was perfect for these two. I cannot wait for the next. This book is perfect for those of us who like a realistic view of a paranormal world that can be violent at times.

What Fools These Immortals Be - Alexandra Keillor
4.5/5✨🌟

M/M
Bodyguard x protectee
Sneaky fae
Vampire x vampire
Touch him & 💀
Slow burn
Found family

First off, Maurice and Njall were everything that I wanted and so much more. From the first chapter, I was completely hooked with the Huntsman and Maurice. And it only got better as I devoured this book in just about two days.

The pace was great. Loved the violence and blood, along with the consensual feeding as well.

The way that these two fell in love was so perfect. The mutual pining was everything that I wanted with these two. Simply perfect! I just didn't think I would love them so much. I absolutely laughed when they were trying to fix their clothes in that one scene but Afsaneh wasn't stupid.

And we got some of the cameos from previous books, which I was so here for. I really loved how Vasile trusted Njall to be the new crai, even if he felt like he didn't. That moment where he said he couldn't do it and should choose someone else, and Vasile had to tell him that he could do it made me all giddy inside.

The spice scenes that we did get was so good! But that bonding scene was utterly perfect and made me swoon so hard.

And oh my god, the way that the book ended has me excited for the second book!

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Fascinating start to this spinoff series

I adored the world Alexandra built in her debut series, Monsters of London, and it's great to be back there again. You could read this without reading that series but characters reappear here and there's a lot of history that you'd miss out on and would make this a far more rewarding read.
I love the title and the cover is very fitting for the mysterious and shadowy Wild Hunt.
Maurice and Njáll’s romance is set against the backdrop of the fragile détente between London's paranormal factions, who are trying to recover from the the events in the first series, and a new threat from the fae that appears to be just as deadly. There's a lot going on here, with both the vampires and the werewolves involved, and familiar faces pop up all through the book but there are also new faces to savour. The tension never really drops throughout.
Watching Maurice and Njáll circle each other while both are struggling with their new responsibilities, and trying not to fall in love, was completely absorbing and I'm looking forward to seeing them in the rest of this series.
After that teaser of an epilogue (so evil, Alexandra!), I can't wait for the next one.

With a title twisted from the Bard, Alexandra Keillor begins a new series spun off from her Monster's of London series. The Huntsman of the Wild Hunt is concerned over the number of powerful fae who are crossing the boundary into the human world. He sends a Hunter, Maurice, to look into things and to protect the crai of London. Njáll is the new ruler of the vampire, the crai. It was an unwanted rise from being one of Vasile's chieftains.
Both characters have to learn new responsibilities. Njáll was aware of what he was getting into, but Maurice hasn't been to the human realm in a long time. Modern technology is alien to him, Maurice learning how to use a cell phone was hilarious. Neither is in a good place to meet their mate, but fate has different ideas. It's not insta love, more like trying to avoid falling in love. When they do get together.... magic sizzle.
New characters and a lot of old faces. The worldbuilding is great, you can feel the tension between paranormal groups. The story grabs you and you don't want it to end. And then there's a cliffhanger.
A quick read. I like the way Ms. Keillor turns a phrase.

Maurice and Njall and their paranormal world

I didn’t realize that this was the spin off of another series, but it’s written well enough with enough information to figure out what has happened and what is going on. I just looked up The Monsters of London series and I actually have read the first two books. I have a terrible memory and didn’t put it together. Maybe it’s because I haven’t read book three? The point still stands that Alexandra Keillor has dropped bits about the previous books well enough that this can be read as just beginning this series or as a follow up to the original.
This is a slow burn and the two main characters don’t get too hot, but there are more books planned for this series so we will see how it goes. There is actually a lot more focus on the overall story than there is on the romance, although there is quite a bit of pinning. I feel like the thing that Ms Keillor excels at is her story telling. The overall story definitely feels like it is setting us up for epic things. There are so many elements that she brings together here that it would be difficult to encompass it in a review. Let’s just say that it’s great as well as being great fun to read. Can’t wait for more story.

The Monsters of London series was stellar and The Wild Hunt spin-off series first book “What Fools These Mortals Be” did also not disappoint! The gritty, supernatural atmosphere of a London crawling with fae politics, vampire drama, and the shadowy pull of the Wild Hunt really hit it for me. The dynamic between the hardened, fae-blessed vampire Maurice and Njáll—the awkward, overworked crai he’s ordered to protect—had me grinning, swooning, and occasionally yelling at the page.

Their relationship builds with such crackling tension, and watching the vampire’s icy detachment melt into reluctant care was incredibly satisfying. Njáll may seem buttoned-up at first, but once those darker layers start surfacing… whew. There’s heat, there’s blood, there’s banter, and a whole lot of aching, emotional depth that caught me off guard in the best way.

The world building is rich, the action thrilling, and the romance deliciously slow-burn (until it very much isn’t). If you love queer urban fantasy with bite—both literal and emotional—you’ll want to dive into this series immediately. I can’t wait to see where the Hunt takes us next.

This was the perfect first book and set up for the rest of the series! It is a more plot driven book than a character driven one. Which I think worked well and is what the coming books needed. We need all the lead up, all the back stories, we need to meet all the new characters. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be as an author to weave all the parts together especially in book one of a new series. Even if this one is a spin off of the original Monsters of London series. One could read this as a standalone , but to get the full picture and to know who a lot of the back ground characters are and the trauma Njáll has been through they all should be read in order. The relationship between Maurice and Njáll is a slow burn Alexandra loves to kill us slowly, although it really does just make sense with the plot. Their story is special and unexpected, and so sweet. I really could use a book two to see more into their life together, although I know there will be plenty of them to come. This one just made me so excited for the rest, and that ending?!!

This is the first book in the Wild Hunt series and a spin off of the author’s Monsters of London series. While not required, it would be beneficial to read that series first. I have to admit that even though I read all of the previous series I found myself going back to them for reference. There is a lot of world building and the introduction of new characters along with the return of some familiar characters from the MOL series. I liked Maurice and Njall and wanted to see a little more of them together. One of my favorite new characters is Grant. I loved his attitude and sass! This book took me a little longer to read as I tried to keep everything straight, but I ended up enjoying it like I did the first series. I’m excited to see that the next book is about Quinn and Asher even though the excerpt made me a little apprehensive.

WHAT FOOLS THESE IMMORTALS BE is the first book in The Wild Hunt series, but I would recommend you read it after the Monsters of London series, as it follows on from the events in those books.

We have previously met Njáll, but Maurice is someone completely new. Njáll is the new crai and doesn't feel up to the job, even though everyone else seems to have faith and confidence in him. Maurice is a vampire with fae magic, courtesy of The Huntsman, who is charged with 'babysitting' Njáll. He is overjoyed* at the idea (*sarcasm! 😉)

Their relationship isn't immediate, but grows over time, which I loved. Njáll has reasons for doing what he does, the same as Maurice, but when these two actually talk to each other and secrets come out, that's when the heat is turned up.

The thing I love about these books is you get normal situations with paranormal twists. Nothing is ever straight forward and it is talked about from every angle, so you know exactly just how complex something might be, that looks so simple at first glance.

I did absolutely nothing else once I had started this book, and I read it in one sitting as I was physically incapable of putting it down. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and I can't wait for the next one.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I really enjoyed this book and thought that it was a good start to the Wild Hunt Series, a spin-off from Alexandra’s Monsters of London Series. I was hooked from page one and enjoyed getting to re-immerse myself in this magical world that Alexandra has created. Maurice & Njáll’s relationship snuck up on me and them. They have a lot working against them, since Maurice is part of the Wild Hunt and can’t stay, even though they’ve become closer the longer he’s guarding Njáll, he goes where the Huntsman tells him and Njáll has just taken over the crai position from Vasile.

He doesn’t believe he’s up for the job but believe that makes him an even better crai, he just needs to learn to delegate more and make the job his own. This book is more plot driven, than on Maurice & Njáll’s relationship but even though it’s not the focal point you can clearly see their relationship change throughout this book. I enjoyed getting to see some of the characters that we got to know and fall in love with during the Monsters of London Series. I’m looking forward to reading more from this series as it continues, as well as more books from Alexandra Keillor in the future. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author to others.

******I received a complimentary copy of this book through GRR. I would still happily review this book even if I purchased it myself. My thoughts and feelings about this book are completely unbiased******

I really enjoyed this one. And truly, you could start this series from here without reading previous series (well, there are spoilers...but, y'know...). Anyhoo, loved the setting and background and the characters are fun. There's a bit more to understand of the other characters so I did feel I was missing a bit of detail but it didn't detract me from enjoying the story. MC's matched very well - loved their banter and laughed at their antics.....but there is an over-arcing storyline, so I'll definitely be reading next in series...

We are back in London, I believe that it is best if the readers have read Monsters of London series before starting this book as there is some background that comes up.
Njall has taken over from Vas as the Crai of the vampire clan. He is assigned a bodyguard from the wild hunt, a vampire with extras called Maurice. Oh my, I really enjoyed the storyline of the rogue High Fae. Adding the romance was just the cherry on top.
There is lots of new characters to meet and get to know but the core group from Monsters are referenced a lot and make appearances. I enjoyed the fact that I didn't see all the twists coming, there is quite a bit of sexiness between Njall and Maurice even if they kept being interrupted. I will be re-reading this book as the rest of the series is released and I will ber recommending to all who enjoy paranormal stories.

Loving this new series, with all the familiar characters but a new perspective and new people to meet. Njall and Maurice really complemented each other, and the worldbuilding of this series continues to be spectacular. The politics and general interactions between all of the species is so interesting, and Kellior writes it well. I don't think you could fully read this without at least some understanding of what came before - this is more an extension than a spin off if that makes sense. Really looking forward to more in this world

A great start to a new series by Alexandra Keillor. Set in the same world, with some characters appearing, as her Monsters of London series. This is the story of Njall (who we met in the aforementioned series) and Maurice. It's a lovely slow burn that is definitely worth it! Both characters have things they need to work through on a personal level as well as trying to keep the Fae from taking over this realm. I loved the relationship, the plot and the character development in this book. I'm already excited about what happens next in this series!

This was my first book by this author, and while this book is a standalone (first in a spinoff series) I could tell I had missed out on some world building in earlier books. I was still able to understand everything (this has great world building itself), it just made me want to go back to read the earlier ones! I really enjoyed this book, the characters, and the way it brought up contemporary real world issues in a PNR setting. It didn't quite hit 5 full stars, but overall very enjoyable. This one ends on a series cliffhanger, but these characters get their HEA.

One of those "yup, the freebie worked" freebies. I loved the Monsters of London series, but hadn't noticed the story carried into this one - this time with more focus on The Hunt, an entity that's popped up before, but with very little explanation.

I'm still pausing it 25% in, because I'm not in the mood right now and I want to focus on the story properly.

What Fools These Immortals Be is the first book in The Wild Hunt series. This is the story of Maurice and Njall both vampires. This is a spinoff of the Monsters of London series and to understand more about Njall's trauma you should read that series first. I love the way Alexandra Keillor does slow burn romance. This book is a great setup for the rest of the series and I can't wait for the next book. I would definitely recommend this book.
