It's springtime in Galveston again, and life is blooming. In Renee, also, as she and Blaine Hadrock deal with the aftermath of the events that occurred on Playtime the previous summer. But from the heights of a tall building and the depths of a seedy strip club come whispers that something else is blooming. Something disturbing and dark and all too real.
The second Blaine Hadrock novel of suspense. This novel of suspense recommended for those 18 and older due to some mature situations, profanity, and drug use portrayal.
Bart Hopkins Jr. is an ex-surfer, avid hiker and occasional rock climber, chess enthusiast and motorcyclist. He is interested in brain and mind topics and linguistics. Has 2 wonderful grown children and 3 grandchildren. Lives in Texas with his wife Kat. His latest of 9 novels include the story of an anthropologist's stay in a psych ward, One Came Crashing In, and the FBI thriller, Living By The Gun. Give them a read!
This is a book that a friend recommended to me. GAME TIME is the second novel featuring protagonist Blaine Hadrock.
I believe the author is from Texas – and for sure there was no problem picturing the Galveston he paints for readers in this book, or the characters he creates. Hopkins’ writing style mimics the Texas drawl in a way that few people can capture with the written word. From the opening paragraphs I believed I was in Texas.
There are several storylines being developed at once. Here we find Hadrock and Renee recovering from facing down a serial killer in the first book in the series; Hadrock’s uncle Sonny is dealing with cancer; a bar owner who profits from illegal activities and was partners with the now-deceased serial killer finds out another major player is pushing for a piece of his business; and a mysterious businessman who has been extremely successful in life now has an incredibly evil vision for the future.
When it’s done well, as a reader you have the anticipation that everything will come together at the perfect moment. Here I think the author managed it quite well – my only criticism was I felt the last few pages were rushed as the final pieces came together. It still reached a satisfying conclusion, but I wouldn’t have minded if he’d taken another 25 pages to get there.
A good read for mystery/thriller fans. I’ll be sure to purchase the next in the series. 5/5 stars
I really enjoyed the first novel in this series, so I was excited to dive into the second one. It didn’t start off impressing me as I thought it would. A majority of the novel was spent on character development, and it never moved anywhere.
I was mostly wondering if anything was supposed to happen or if I was going to just keep reading the same thing over and over. It made reading the first half of Game Time pretty monotonous.
It took until about the last 20% of the book for things to actually get rolling, even then nothing too huge happened as the situation was diffused before it blew up, literally.
I just didn’t really care about any of the character this time around.
It was an okay read, it just didn’t live up to the previous book.
