This wordless picture book follows two wallpaper decorators as they get their first order of the day. Find out how a simple task of installing wallpaper turns out to be disaster.
From what I gathered in my research, "Disorderly Decorators" has not won any awards, although I believe it should have. This picture book is good for grades Pre-K through 2nd grade. What happens in the book is two workers of Howdy Doody & Co. Paper Hanging are hired for a job. Their excitement is very well captured in the illustrations. They load up their truck and paint the walls for a man's home, all the while being clumsy; they drop paint, knock down the ladder, and run into each other, creating a humorous vibe. The illustrations are unique and old fashioned in a way, and there is a lot happening on each page. The characters are well done; one can easily see that they are clumsy, good-natured workers, which makes the book light-hearted and innocent. This book could be used in class as a fun reading activity, after which students could share what their parents or guardians do for a living. This could mean that they have to go home and ask what that is, which would create good dialogue between family members. Another activity could be asking the students what they want to do when they grow up. It would be a good discussion topic, especially if students have never thought about it before. Lastly, students could make their own wall decorations, like the workers do in the book. They could do this by simply using construction paper, crayons, markers, paint, etc.
