Happily Ever After Dark #3

Of Thorns and Wings: The Dragon and The Devouring Tree Part 2

Rate this book
"It's time to wake up, sleeping beauty."

Rosemary
Locked away in the King’s City and forced into a dreamless sleep where even my wife can’t reach me, my hope is quickly wilting. When help arrives, we’re forced into a strange alliance, working alongside our enemies. Together, we might be able to overthrow Lollishire’s monarchy and restore the peace.
But I feel the constant pull of the Hartwood, calling me to set the forest free. And I’m learning there are more powerful forces than greedy kings and manipulative queens trying to keep Carabosse from me.
I never meant to fall for the wraith, but now that she’s mine, I refuse to give her up that easily. I’ll defy the Goddesses themselves to reforge our destiny.

Carabosse
A single mistake I made over twenty years ago still keeps me from what I want more than anything—to be the one who gives my mate everything. I'll have to settle for ensuring her safety, no matter what it costs me.
But even when I'm losing myself to the darkness, I can sense my wife.
My little witch might be the only one who can bring me back to the light.

I’ve already read several of Darva Green’s books by now because my wife loves her and I have to say every new book she releases gets better. I liked most of them except one (looking at you, “she came from the swamp”) and this one would have been a 5 star because it’s full of plot twists (and ones I loved) but I’m still having trouble with some of her storytelling.
Look, I love a nice sex scene like most lesbians and she’s getting better at writing them and I will even give her points for finally realizing penetration and using dildos are not mandatory in all of them but for goddess’ sake, can she not place one when the stakes are high? If you are about to be caught and your life is in danger having sex is probably last in your list of priorities unless you are a Darva Green’s character, I suppose. The whole scene in the King’s castle left me with a “WTF?!” sense instead of being enjoyable.
Buuut that’s not the main reason why this is a 4 star book thought. The pacing at the end felt weird, like things happened too fast. Everything felt rushed and not deep enough when the previous book and even this one up until the middle took its time to build up to the resolution. Then the resolution took like two or three chapters and that was it. Rosemary took like half a paragraph to accept her faith and then in the next paragraph her mothers inform her they are offering themselves instead and then just like that they do the enchantment and disappear? All in the same page? Pretty much all of what happened in the forest felt rushed and unnatural. Vellesse could finally see her lover again after ages by kidnapping Carabosse’s body and then resigns herself to abandon it and her lover again until further notice because Tree Mother tells her in five seconds and with almost no conflict. The rebellion ends and we are informed it WILL go well but not shown anything when we spent two books talking about it. And at the end of the book we finish every other conflict with a treaty in less than one chapter by drugging everyone. Yay!
Listen, I know you want to finish the book but I was invested in this whole world building, you can’t just throw the political conflict away because the lovers’ story finished. Give me at least a few more chapters to close everything up and add some fluff along the way if you want. Or even show me Rosemary’s struggle with losing her mothers instead of telling me in an epilogue.
I’m honestly torn, I did love the book but I was left wanting more in the end, it had so much potential but the resolution felt short considering all the plot points that were opened. Still enjoyed it a lot though.

This was a great ending to the duology. Sad that it’s over, but glad that the storyline felt complete.

The only reason I took away 0.25 stars is because it felt a little rushed for me. There was so much to the plot, and I do feel like all my questions were answered, but I felt like some storylines were rushed. I would have a like a little more insight to the 3 witches that meant so much to Rosemary.

I love the romance between Carabosse and Rosemary. It was so sweet and loving. A lot of fantasy books focus on enemies to lovers or grumpy/sunshine (which I love, don’t get me wrong), but it was so refreshing to read a romance that was more Romeo and Juliet then anything. Two people in love that just want to be together more than anything.

Also love the balance of both Carabosse and Rosemary’s abilities. It was satisfying to see Rosemary’s development in both character and personality.

Would definitely recommend this series!

loved it

What a great book. It continues on from book one and just keeps on flowing. It was a great read and hard to put down. I love the growth of the relationship between the MCs and how they work with the Robin and the Merry Men to save their part of the world. Has spice and a great ending.

Honestly loved it.

There's good spice, fated mates, and fantastic dual POV with a masc/femme combo. Obsessed with the characters. It's romantasy at its best.

Tropes: fated mates, witches, wraiths, fantasy, touch her and die, and overprotective lover.

Lots of yearning, sacrifice, anger, and revenge.
