Dragon’s Reign #7

The Dragon Shifters’ Enemy

Rate this book
The true enemy of the Dragon Shifters has waited in the shadows, letting its pawns in the Faith and Humans First act on its behalf. But the time has come to reveal itself. But will the Dragon Shifters be able to work together to face the Behemoth?

This is a long serial that is divided into book-length segments. Every single one ends in a cliffhanger. We anticipate there being 9 volumes. This series will not be in KU, because it is on the Raythe Reign serial website. There is also a free audio version on Youtube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts!

1/5 … This one took a turn.. and not for the better. I’d actually been reading through this series fairly quickly and although themes of inequality and barriers were far from subtle and were pretty direct really, I found myself looking forward to seeing how they would take on those challenges and improve things. Instead, about half way into this book—which, let’s remember is number 7 of a planned 9 books—Aratare chose to introduce a big bad “Behemoth” from the other side (the spirit’s dimension) and decided to put at least a chunk of the blame for the unrest and disgruntlement with the status quo on this outside influence/interference. Then the whole plot basically got highjacked by this quest to defeat it. Forget about winning hearts and minds and doing the hard work of fixing social injustices, etc. Oh, and did I mention that practically as soon as this new “evil entity” was introduced, the two MCs decided to go on a getaway to a private, secluded Rivendell spa/castle/what-have-you? That’s right. They found out about this enemy they had no idea about and the very next morning, they fly away without a word to anymore and go get frisky by a waterfall.

Basically, after the concept of this “Behemoth” was introduced, it got quite tedious to get through the rest. I suppose the silver lining is that I’m less bothered by the cliffhanger given that the other two books aren’t out yet and I’m not so interested anymore given the shift in focus. Maybe there’s some symbolism somewhere in there with this OP hydra dragon that’s working from the shadows to wreak havoc and chaos, but it just turned this series into something outlandish. It felt like a pretty grounded fantasy series before, with real-life problems and issues to face and resolve, international politics, human rights issues, etc. Now it’s just focused on this Behemoth. smh…
