Have you ever struggled in your meditation time? Would you like a real working method that will help you know your bible like the back of your hand?In this book you will discover a detailed but simple method that will propel your ability to memorize scripture beyond anything you ever thought possible.
Adam is a preacher, teacher and Christian author. He is a devoted husband and father of 3 boys. Through His travels he’s seen the need for a new awakening and a new revival: A revival of the heart. Come join Adam on this journey of redemption and experience God like never before!
Though I find myself wondering at those who give reasons for applying the how-to principles to those who are reading the how-to book, I did find some good insights on Scripture after the first chapter. So thanks goes to Adam for reminding us that the Word of God is spiritually discerned and retained. In my experience, memorizing Scripture is some times fast and easy but other times difficult. We all have things in our lives that need to be removed, or healed or set right. Adam points out that being prepared to have God work on our hearts as we memorize will make the process far more profitable and encouraging.
This book contains strategy for memorizing a lot of scripture, as well as some encouragement and faith building in regards to our ability to memorize scripture. However, the author at times comes across as "bragging", and as dismissive of folks who don't have his obvious gifting for memorization. Since it's not possible for everyone to do as well as the author since we all have things we are gifted for and not gifted for, this tone might actually be discouraging of someone's natural abilities and level of faith, rather than encouraging, for folks. Here's an example from the book:
"So I laugh at the teacher that tells you to memorize five to eight verses a day for a month and a half and then you'll have a whole book memorized. I memorized and retained a book per day on several occasions during those two months. I could hardly memorize a single verse then suddenly through the Holy Spirit, by faith in Christ, I memorized a vast amount of Scripture. I have now, over the years, memorized many more books and chapters and retained much of what I memorized."
That being said, it is true that probably a good number of us have the capacity to memorize a lot more than we have patience or confidence for today, in our age of "Just Google it". I remember my grandfather, for example, telling of the epic poems they had to memorize when he was a child in the early 1900s. We are far too used, too often, to just being given information, without having to actually work to retain or use it.
This book was rife with Scripture taken out of context to prove the point that a Christian who has been regenerated and is filled with the indwelling Holy Spirit, can memorize faster and better if they “have faith.” Now obviously, as Christians, we are called to have faith in every action, and to give God the glory for all of the accomplishments He completes through us, but that does not mean, and there is NO Scripture to suggest (when taken in context), that faith is a requirement for better verse memorization.
I gave the book 2 stars because I appreciate at least the understanding by the author of the importance of memorizing Scripture, but that said, this book provides 2 notions:
1. Rote memorization is good
2. Rote memorization needs to be augmented with faith in Christ, or you will be unfruitful.
This second notion is nice to say, but lacks real Scriptural integrity. ALL things need to be done through faith in Christ to make it a lasting effort that is fruitful for the kingdom of God, and God may use one’s faithfulness to bless the results of the enterprise, but to say that faith and a little diligence is all that is required is a ridiculous statement.
God requires that we have faith in Him, give Him the glory, and DO THE WORK!
There was good, useful information in this book. Thank you to the author for sharing your experience and advice. But, I think that I could have been covered in 1/3 to 1/2 the length. There was a lot of repetition. Better editing would help. Good cover graphic, too. Again, I liked the book for the information. The author's goal is met, in that, I will use the information.
This book is a great learning tool! have not truly practiced it as of yet, I have already learned from it just while reading through the book. I personally b
Although I have not tried to use these helpfully facts to learn the Bible as of yet I have already learned much just by reading and studying this book after asking the Holy Spirit for guidance. I can not wait to apply it fully!
I downloaded this book for free, so it's fine if I didn't love this book. Basically, I don't know how the author put this title on this book. Once inside, the reader is exhorted to not be lazy, have discipline and use a method (rote memorization) that has worked for 1000s of years. I do lots of scripture memory (through rote memorization, phrase by phrase) and am often looking for a resource for others on this topic--this will not be the resource. I am usually gracious to authors that are still living, but the tone of this book was very off-putting. It felt like I was reading an author's rant. On one hand, he was exhorting the reader to be humble and rely on God for help in memorization, but his tone, examples and stories felt arrogant and judgmental. This book was very disappointing and I wish I had my 30 minutes back.
I liked how simple and easy the author made it to memorize the book. and it was Christ-centered. the author went straight to the point, and helped us learn to enjoy guardin God's Word in our heart rather than in our head. reading this book made me realize I definitely needed more time to read my Bible and ponder the Scriptures.
It was an awakening for me somehow why most of the Christian are complacent when it comes to reading the bible. I find this encouraging after knowing that nothing is impossible for God and finding people, the author himself to have applied this technique. I can't wait to lock God's Word in my heart for His Glory.
Freebie on B&N this week--Just a lot of encouragement and reasons why we should memorize bible passage. We have a challenge in R.S. this year to memorize some scriptures was hoping this had some good ideas on how to do it quickly--not so many new ideas just the one we all know and sometimes don't love.
I'm trying to be better at memorizing scriptures. I found unbelievable to be able to do so many books in such short times. However, it seems to be doable . Through this book I have learned to accomplished it.. ThAnk you
Yes I will recommend this book . It was very helpful
I like the confidence reminders that one can do this if u put the right reason for memorizing in the first place. Ask, seek, knock on the door for the holy spirit will help...have faith.
I read and got real help and encouragement in how to begin a closer walk in my journey with the Lord. Thought I was not able to do the memorization that I would like, but am ready to work at it and trust the Spirit's help.
I finished this book in an hour. I cannot wait to apply the methods recommended by the author! I have always had a hard time memorizing scripture, but in some way he has simplified the process. I will start tomorrow morning!
For those people who just need a kick to get started on memorizing this is helpful and encouraging . .. others who have no intention of memorizing will probably never pic this book up anyway.
This book what a great book I have learned a lot about memorizing the Bible I will use a lot of tips. I can't wait to read more of his books great author gradebook I encourage everybody to read it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Has given me knew spiritual insight into how we can retain God's Word through faith and self-esteem discipline and I absolutely recommend it to all seeking to learn how to do just that.
Interesting proposition. Book was thankfully short. Discusses the general idea behind how faith makes it possible !But prefer "the 5 concrete steps" the other book by same author. Something you can actually try out to test your faith.
I liked this book because it gives me hope that the Spirit will use His power in me with a pure heart to become a walking bible, so that if I ever don't physically have one, thy word is still written on my heart.
One of the best books I have ever read on memorizing the Bible. Sound method that confirms the method I have used over the years. This book can apply to any age as long as the Holy Spirit abides within. Thank you for sharing your God given wisdom.
I would suggest this book for anyone struggling to memorize Bible verses. As I struggle greatly with memorization, this method seems to be the most logical, but also spiritual I could find.
The book is about learning to memorize the bible, but I found it to be more of a faith lifting book. The route techniques are great, but the usage of the Holy Spirit and faith what I got out of this book. I love it.
Adam encourages you to memorize scripture. Tells you the best way. Gives you the right reasons for doing it. Short book, to the point. I am encouraged to do this.
Excellent idea for memorizing scripture. I have tried it in the past with a little success but had given up. God keeps bringing it to my memory so I know He wants me to do this and I believe He led me to Adams book just for this reason....because it works!
A must for anyone wanting to learn how to memorize Scripture
If you are like me and want to learn how to recall Scriptures from memory I suggest reading this. Adam goes into detail on how to do it and also explains why it is important.
I am going to apply this book to my Bible study. It sounds like a common sense approach. As a Christian it is a necessity to memorize scriptures. Not a luxury.
Great and simple way to use scripture daily. Not just memorization, but utilization. His word is useless if I don't understand it or know how to use it everyday.
TL;DR: Memorize by rote, but "in the power of the Spirit."
Pros: Houge is right and clear when he says that memorizing the Bible is important, and that doing so in order to show off and be prideful is wrong. He also encourages his readers to pray and ask God for wisdom, and to help them memorize. Great! Avail yourself of the throne of grace, and yeah, if Buddhists and Muslims can memorize their scriptures, we sure as heck ought to be learning ours. I also appreciate how short this book is. It could probably be even shorter, but it's a twenty-minute read as it is.
Cons: Right off the bat he misses the gospel: we fulfill the law of Christ by loving our neighbor? Yeah no. I didn't see the actual content of the Christian faith summarized well anywhere in this book, which makes hollow his exhortation to trust in the power of God and listen to the Holy Spirit. He speaks rightly of the Bible being our revelation of God's will, but then promises "revelation upon revelation" if we "tap into" the Holy Spirit through our personal experience. It's nothing grossly heretical, read charitably, but a more solid and clearly stated doctrine of Scripture and of the Holy Spirit would do this book a lot of good.
