He was chair of the National Year of Reading, a joint initiative between government and businesses. He is also active in many Stevenage charities and is President of the Stevenage Community Trust and Patron of Home-Start Hertfordshire.
Ken, who loves music almost as much as he loves books, is an enthusiastic bass guitar player. He lives in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, with his wife Barbara, the former Labour Member of Parliament for Stevenage. Between them they have five children, six grandchildren and two Labradors.

Por primera vez en mi vida termino un libro y no se que decir de él. Esta historia es tan extraña, tan sencilla, tan corta y tan compleja al tiempo, que sinceramente no se que pensar.
Es un libro supremamente extraño. Me dejó muda, no se si para bien o para mal, pero no tengo idea que decir al respecto

Lectura muy amena y muy fácil de leer, una ciencia ficción sencilla y breve que puede ser leída por niños y adolescentes.
A pesar de ser una historia muy corta, me ha parecido sumamente interesante. Los temas que toca, inmersos en un ambiente de ciencia ficción, como la preservación de todos los seres vivientes en el espacio, el poder de la política y la manipulación que ejerce como gobernante en los pueblos, la esclavitud y mal manejo de la explotación de los recursos sin pensar en las consecuencias devastadoras, el egoísmo y la traición.
Me parece que esta historia tiene muchos puntos que llevan a la reflexión, y tal vez le haya faltado a Follet ahondar en varios de ellos, pero igual, como dije anteriormente, es llamativa.

Mai avrei pensato di dare a uno scritto di Follett una valutazione al di sotto della sufficienza, ma capita, anche ai grandi. Mi rendo conto che è uno dei primi libri dell'autore, mi rendo conto che è stato scritto quasi quaranta anni fa e la parte fantascientifica che sembra sorpassata, all'epoca poteva essere considerata all'avanguardia. C'è anche un messaggio importante nascosto tra le righe, ma purtroppo non mi è piaciuto. nonostante fossero pochissime pagine e abbia laternato audiolibro e cartaceo, ci ho messo tanto ad arrivare alla fine.

Es el 1er libro que leo del autor, no me desagrado,pero tampoco me ha gustado demasiado.Creo esta bien para pasar el rato y creo que hay una critica social/economica bastante evidente. Es raro que sea de ciencia ficcion y que tenga un tono infantil/juvenil.La introduccion de la historia me parecio correcta ,pero el desarrollo y el final muy apresurados.

Found it! I still remember being irritated by this book as a kid, years ago. First of all, the title is weirdly misleading: there are actually three main characters, the twins and their young cousin or something. I remember being really puzzled by that; it was more or less my first introduction to the idea that a book's marketing might be independent of its content. Part of the plot was the twins learning to be nicer to their irritating cousin and not shut him out of everything, so it's a bit much that he's excluded from the cover, title, and synopsis. Also (and this didn't so much bother me at the time, but does in retrospect), the twins' "powers" (which they are given without their consent, in what I remember as an ethically questionable sequence of events) are basically exaggerated gender stereotypes: the boy gets super logical problem solving abilities, and the girl gets to intuitively understand people's feelings based on their body language. (The cousin gets a mysterious bond with a weird little furry creature, which becomes important at some point, I think.) But I think what bothered me most was the very ending (I'll hide this as a spoiler, but seriously, it's not worth saving):

Leído: 8,5/10. Pues me ha gustado. Una de las primeras obras de Follet, no llega a las 70 páginas. Así que queda como relato largo o novela cooorta.
Y es una obra de ciencia ficción juvenil con viajes interestelares, de lo más llamativa.
Cuando se llenan tan pocas páginas tienes que decir cosas. Y tienen que estar bien dichas, porque no hay nada peor que hacer sentir al lector que está perdiendo el tiempo, aunque sea poco.
Y Follet logra que el poco tiempo en el que se lee deje poso.
Juvenil, sí. Corta, también. Pero con conceptos de scifi bien majos para el lector ávido de aventuras intergalácticas. Con gusanos alienigenas como protagonistas, y un planeta con características propias bastante sorpresivas.
Sorpresa inesperada, tratándose además de una de sus primeras obras, que data de 1976.

Un romanzo rivolto ad un pubblico giovane, comunque un buon inizio per Ken Follett, che all’epoca dell’uscita utilizzò lo pseudonimo di Martin Martinsen. Un libro breve, scorrevole ed interessante, un genere diverso rispetto ai tanti scritti da Follett. Dettagliate le descrizioni dei personaggi e dell'ambiente, almeno fino alla prima metà del libro, ritengo infatti che il finale sia stato troppo affrettato. Una storia apparentemente banale, ma se poi pensiamo che è un libro che ha superato di gran lunga i quarant’anni, possiamo certamente definirlo innovativo.

La idea me pareció muy interesante, pero la historia me decepcionó mucho. Es una historia muy corta, así que es fácil terminarla aunque no te guste. No es que fuera exactamente mala, pero hubo varios elementos que no me gustaron.
Para empezar, nunca averiguamos cuál es el poder de uno de los personajes. Hay tres personajes principales y se nos dice que el poder de uno de ellos va a despertar en algún momento, pero es algo que nunca ocurre. Leí la edición española de esta historia, pero el título en inglés da una pista de esta situación, porque sólo menciona a los gemelos, que son los dos personajes principales que reciben poderes que sí se explican y deja sin mencionar a su primo. Estaba deseando saber cuál sería el poder del chico, así que me decepcionó que la historia acabara sin ninguna mención de lo que puede hacer.
Además, la parte más interesante de la historia es muy corta, porque el número de páginas es bastante reducido y no ocurre nada en la primera parte de la historia. Luego, el resto está bastante acelerado y los poderes que reciben los gemelos son muy convenientes. Uno recibe el poder de poder leer muy bien a las personas y el otro, el poder de entender cualquier tecnología a una velocidad increíble. También hay otras cosas en esta historia que ocurren en los momentos más perfectos. Si no es algo que te importe, es una bonita historia corta con un argumento muy fácil de seguir, lo que la hace una buena elección para esos momentos en los que uno quiere algo más ligero y no demasiado complicado.
Me hubiera gustado saber más de los dos planetas. La historia nos da toda la información general de lo que está pasando y de cómo fueron descubiertos el planeta y los gusanos, pero da la sensación de ser algo incompleta, porque lo averiguamos todo a través de testimonios cortos de testigos.
En cuanto a los personajes, fueron poco realistas durante la segunda mitad de la historia. Son muy normales antes de que se enteren de que hay vida alienígena, pero demuestran una gran falta de emociones cuando se enfrentan con una posible muerte. Han sido capturados en un planeta alienígena y no saben si podrán volver a sus casas, pero es como si eso fuera lo más normal del mundo para ellos.
En general, parece más bien una historia para niños. Bonita y corta y con un final feliz, pero nada más que eso. Si esto es todo lo que estás esperando, no está mal, pero si sólo conoces la sinopsis antes de empezar a leerla, puede que acebes decepcionado si lo que esperas es algo más juvenil.

I thought that the premise was very interesting, but I was very disappointed. It's a very short story, so it's easy to finish, even when you don't like it. The story wasn't exactly bad, but there were many elements that I didn't like.
First of all, we never learn what the power of one of the characters is. There are three main characters and we're told that the power of one of them will awaken at some point, but it never does. I read the Spanish edition of this story, but the English title is a hint of this situation, because it mentions the twins, who are the two main characters who do get powers that are explained, and leaves their cousin unmentioned. I was looking forward to knowing what that boy’s power is, so I was a bit disappointed when the story ended without mentioning what he can do.
Also, the most interesting part of the story is very short, because the number of pages is rather small and nothing really happens in the first half of the story. Then, the rest is a bit too rushed and the powers that the twins get are too convenient. One gets the power of reading people very well and the other, the power of figuring out technology at an amazing speed. There are also other things in this story that just happen at the most perfect moments. If you don't mind this, it's a nice short story with a plot that's very easy to follow, which makes it a good choice for those moments, when you want something light and not very complicated.
I would have liked to know more about both planets. The story does give us all the general information about what's going on and how the planet and the worms were discovered, but it feels slightly incomplete, because we get to know everything through a couple of short witness statements.
The characters were a bit unrealistic during the second half of the story. They're very normal before they learn about alien lives, but they show a lack of emotion when they're faced with possible death. They've been captured on an alien planet and they don't know if they're going to be able to go home, but it's as if this is the most common thing in the world for them.
In general, it feels a lot like a children's story. Nice and short and with a sweet ending, but nothing more than this. If this is all that you're expecting, it's not bad at all, but if you only know the synopsis before you start reading, you might be disappointed if you expect something a bit more YA.

A volte l'amico Ken proprio non lo capisco... come può uno scrittore scrivere "Il Codice Rebecca" o "I Pilastri della Terra" e poi dilettarsi con una cosa simile? Per fortuna che si legge in mezz'ora perchè non si potrebbe sopportare per un minuto in più... pensato come una fiaba per bambini, vorrei tanto scovare un bambino che l'ha letto e aprrezzato... Bha!

So, I had this book as a kid, and read it several times, and then spent years trying to figure out what book it was before finally figuring it out through the magic of a newly updated Wikipedia article, so I might be biased as to it's quality.
This basically read like a Doctor Who episode. It may well have been originally intended as a Doctor Who episode. It was from the right era. The main guy basically had a Tardis. There were essentially scrappy companions. Hell, the first chapter is titled 'Uncle Who?' So, basically, it was cheesy but fed right into the type of cheesiness that I consume on a regular basis. Definitely for a younger audience, but cute. Unlike the cover of the paperback. Which is not cute.

So the kids, they get to go into space, and get superpowers, and fight corporate corruption, and meet a living planet, and yeah, as a ten-year-old this was pretty much perfect. There's another review on here that compares it to a Doctor Who episode, and I think that's about right - a '70s episode, with an unlimited budget and one of those really good combinations of SF and adventure.

Demasiado corta, muy compleja para el público al que seguramente apunta, muy desabrida en todo sentido, se extiende donde no debe y se resume donde debería aprovecharse. Ken Follett se levantó ebrio, escribió cualquier cosa en el papel y PUM: nuevo libro.

Questo libro mi è stato regalato quando ero piccola. L'ho ritrovato dopo anni e ho deciso di rileggerlo. Lo stile narrativo è semplice e leggero, adatto ad una storia breve. Penso però che sia più adatto ai ragazzi dai dodici ai sedici anni.
Ci sono varie cose che da subito non funzionano con la trama.

Un libro bastante adecuado si quieres empezar con la ciencia ficción. O si quieres que los niños se adentren al mundo de la lectura.
¿Para qué leer el misterio del planeta de los gusanos?
1. Por que Follet es un gran narrador, no hace pesada la historia, describe muy bien los escenarios. Y cada personaje tiene una función en especifico. No hay rellenos, siempre hay acción y un buen mensaje al final.
2. Maneja muy bien la critica acerca de la sobre explotación de los recursos y como estos puedes llevar a la destrucción de la tierra. Además de tocar temas de la esclavitud e intereses políticos.
4. El uso del humor infantil y el pensamiento de acuerdo a la edad de sus protagonistas lo hacen muy entretenido y alucinante.
Lo malo: El final fue demasiado, mejor dicho en extremo apresurado.Dejando algunos cabos suelto.
Aún así me entretuvo bastante el libro. :)

se imagina está historia con más de 500 páginas? Hubiera sido muy buena, pero en cambio un ya muy reconocido autor que aunque ya tiene rato aún siguen usando su nombre para vender.
La historia es aburrida, mala, y apresurada. Tiene todo para ser una buena historia y para vender más, pero desde que presentan la máquina que es algo así una nave espacial es algo absurdo, ¿Imagina, llega tu tío y te dice que es una nave espacial, dirías mola?
Los personajes son simples y ridículos.
Se que es ciencia ficción, pero es muy absurda.
Una buena idea, pero como dije: Cómo rayos vas a contar esa historia en 160 páginas? Es absurdo y más su final que es como decir valla vivimos una gran aventura, nos enseñas a conducir?
Algo gracioso es que en el principito no quieren excluir a su primo y ni siquiera aparece en la portada😅

Considerando che sto cercando di sistemare la mia libreria, aggiungendo tutti i romanzi letti che ancora (per non so quale assurdo motivo) qui non avevo caricato e contando che sono tutte letture effettuate molti molti anni fa, potrei fare un po' di confusione, ma...mi era piaciuto. Un po' strano, ma bello. Unica lettura di Follett, ma che sicuramente, ai tempi, mi aveva convinta che, forse forse, avrei potuto affrontare altre tue lettura.

Excellent livre pour initier les enfants aux dangers de la destruction des écosystèmes et à l'hypothèse Gaïa, derrière une façade plutôt agréable de science-fiction.
Je ne m'attendais pas du tout à trouver aussi intéressant un livre d'un auteur de best-sellers très vendus dans les gares...
Naturellement je ne l'ai pas lu en tant que cible, mais pour voir s'il était adapté à mon fils de 8 ans!

Non un libro memorabile, non un Follett propriamente nel suo ambiente. La storia è carina, ma con qualche forzatura di troppo che la rende prevedibile in alcuni punti e poco credibile in altri (i bambini sono le creature più imparziali che esistano? Ne dubito fortemente). Resta la sensazione di un romanzo tirato via, con un inizio che forse voleva andare da un’altra parte, una parte centrale abbastanza godibile ma con le forzature di cui sopra e un finale da chiudiamo tutto in fretta.

È un libro molto carino, sicuramente per ragazzi, ma il problema è la lunghezza. Il libro è talmente corto che la storia non ha tempo né modo di svilupparsi. Tutte le premesse sono interessanti e ben scritte, ma rimangono solo premesse! Sembra che tutto a un tratto qualcuno abbia detto a Ken Follett di smettere di scrivere e che lui si sia affrettato a dare a questo testo una conclusione!
Peccato, avrei voluto sapere di più del destino del pianeta dei bruchi!

C'è poco da dire, i libri corti o sono capolavori, o sono orrendi. Preso in prestito dalla nonna prima che lo portasse a vendere, «tanto è cortissimo, ci metto poco a finirlo». Non m'è piaciuto per niente, non ha alcun senso, proprio brutto. Non ne ricordo quasi nulla, eccetto la trama a grandi linee e i personaggi principali. Da dimenticare.

Un planeta casi inhabitado y lleno de gusanos. La galaxia entera peleándose por quién tiene el control del planeta, para controlar a los gusanos, para controlar la sustancia que generan… Sí, parece Dune, pero no, no es.
El misterio del planeta de los gusanos es algo así como una novela juvenil, una aventura bastante más ligera y simple de lo que podría ser. Supongo que para niños, va bien.

Primo romanzo di Ken Follett. E' un racconto per ragazzi, peraltro scritto sotto pseudonimo, che già rivela le straordinarie doti di narratore di Follett. Poche pagine molto fantasiose che si leggono d'un fiato.

Fantasy, sci-fi for young, school-age children. Chapter book. Very innocent and naive by today’s standards. I read it because I found a pristine copy at a library sale, and it was written by prolific author Follett decades ago.

Altra storia brevissima (si legge d'un fiato, in un'ora/un'ora e mezza) scritta da un giovanissimo Ken Follett. Una veloce avventura fantasy, simpatica a e godibile.
