“Thy legend was born in the shadow of the beast. Marked with their sign. All dust in the wind. Thy strength was forged in the shadow of the beast. Strength within. Echoes without. Loathe greatest of all when beasts’ shadows are gone. No longer in shadow, the shadow in thee. Breaker of stars, devourer of gods. Haunted triumphs none would crave.”
— Prophecy of Aion Origin
Even the icy grip of death itself couldn’t claim Sylvas as he returns to Strife.
Another trial, another victory. Sylvas is a star clearly on the rise, one that has been noticed far beyond his tiny sphere. Countless powers have turned their gaze towards him and now watch him eagerly as he competes with the best that the Ardent have to offer. Will he continue his ascent? Will he falter? Only time will tell.
Born in 1987, Luke Chmilenko grew up in the city of Mississauga, Ontario spending the majority of his life within the city. Always a fan of writing and storytelling, Luke continuously wrote small short stories over the years, but never embarked on writing a full novel until much later in life, thinking it was something beyond his ability.
With his interesting in writing waxing and waning as the years passed, Luke focused on his studies, eventually finding a job in the field of IT Security and working between various jobs for several years. It wasn't until after he was married and with his wife's encouragement that he finally decided to try writing a novel, this time deciding to focus on a new genre that he had just discovered called LitRPG.
Diving into his work, Luke wrote his first book over the course of several months, releasing the book as a web serial chapter by chapter for free online, garnering valuable feedback and confidence from his readers. By the time Luke finished his first book and published it on amazon, he already had a hungry audience waiting for next installation, to which he immediately threw himself into working tirelessly at his newfound passion.
Today, Luke now writes full time with his wife and two cats in their Burlington home, working away on his next issue of his Ascend Online series and a brand new science fiction series named Starfall.
Books of Ascend Online: Ascend Online (Book 1) (2016) Ascend Online: Hell to Pay (Book 1.5) (2017) Ascend Online: Legacy of the Fallen (Book 2) (2018) Ascend Online: Glory to the Brave (Book 3) (Forthcoming 2019)

What started as an interesting story about the survivor of a destroyed world has turned into the most special boy in the universe getting more and more special. Three books in and we just keep stacking on more unique powers. Somehow despite all that, it manages to be pretty boring. The stakes don’t matter, since every time something challenging happens, the MC unlocks another new secret power and handles it easily.
I might be done with this series. Nothing wrong with it, just not what I’m interested in reading.
Lots of internal agonizing interspersed with combat scenes
These books follow the same pattern, more or less. The main character goes through a lot of internal dialogue and self loathing, followed by a combat scene where he hurts himself, more internal dialogue, then a combat scene where he overcomes and figures out how to be more powerful. Repeat.
Also, basically every single plot point is very predictable. The main selling point is that even if you know where the book is going, the journey is fairly enjoyable.
DNF. I had enjoyed the series to this point, but the eidolon fight was just so stupid, I couldn't get over it. Nothing the character does in this book makes sense. Nothing the faculty does in this book makes sense. They would let their singularly valuable and irreplaceable resource die just to prove a point? The singularly valuable resource that is so painfully stupid and unimaginative that his best use for gravity magic is to keep smashing himself into the ground with it. I'm just mad about it now.
Man the speed ramped up on this one! Sylas has to advance fast to keep himself alive, and the stakes are high! It was nice to see some power ups and also some interesting upsets for the plot. I wasn't a fan of one portion of things with Sylas new embodiment, but maybe others will enjoy it more. And as always the Emperor end pov was intriguing as his nefarious plans are brewing
Still solid fun. Shaping up to be one of those series where you can just relax and enjoy it. Although I have to say, the cryptic bollocks in the epilogues is getting a bit annoying. It doesn’t have anything to do with anything! We’re on book three now, surely it should be making a little sense with the rest of the story?
Another great book by Luke. It’s great to have a steady release of these books. Luke continues to provide quality writing and I always look forward to the next installment.
The cliffhanger and revelation was amazing. It’s great to finally see Sylvas being a terror to other mages instead of being the underdog who succeeds by being crazier. I can’t wait to see what spells he cooks up. Cannot wait for the next book
Love this book and this series. There are great twists and turns, the characters feel like real people with real issues, and the magic system is fun and interesting!
At first I thought that this series was fairly predictable. Interestingly written, but fairly rote. However the twists and turns that the plot has taken has really kept me almost constantly surprised. Well worth reading!
There's a cliffhanger and the next book isn't out until next year. I hate cliffhangers.
I enjoyed it though. Silas or whatever his name is is a much more enjoyable character now that he's worked out some of his traumas. Looking forward to the next one.
Thoroughly enjoyed this read! Glad to finally see some exploration outside of the academic environment and itching to read the next installment. Great, exciting writing!
