(Re-Edited 11/18) After being a researcher for over six years, Parker finds himself in a very awkward situation when he decides to visit one of his friends, a long-time fisherman named Kenton, and ends up in way over his head. He had intended for it to just be a short visit before heading home to start dinner but luck hadn't been on his side. He had stayed for just one minute too long after his friend had left and did the one thing he swore he'd never do, which was interfere with nature...and now he was heading home. With a merman.
Kierei is an avid reader and has been writing for over ten years. She has a blue merle aussie named Raquetball, who lives up to her name quite well.
One of her newer stories coming out soon is called Fox, a story about a sarcastic shapeshifter who learns first how to trust, and then how to love... with quite a few quips and squabbles along the way.
Most merman stories out there are all about sex but this amazing gem dove into the personalities of the MCs. The author made them real and three dimensional. Making the two human MCs marine biologists gave more credence to studying the two mer MCs. This is the first book in a series with the author most likely hiring an editor. The only reason why I didn't give this story 5 stars is because of the poor editing. Highly recommended.
This needs more love. It’s been too long since a story kept me awake past my bedtime, to the point where I woke in the night still thinking about the boys and snagged my ereader to sneak another chapter.
The writing has some newbie issues. The most significant is that the two main human characters speak and behave like older teenagers, rather than marine biologists with PhDs. But the romance is deftly paced and real. The paranormal creatures are satisfyingly wild, and retain that essential quality even as they eventually display an intelligence equal to humans’.
The romantic pairings, which I won’t spoil except to say that there are more than one, were poignantly and believably developed. I was impressed by the balance of sweetness and heat. (And sadly disappointed by .)
3.5 stars rounded up. Merman fans, give this one a shot.

Strange story but liked it. It made me smile because it was just a simple love story. If your looking for a good story without any porn this is it. I liked that the characters didn't do the instant love you see in most books but that they were slowly learning each other although the older men was scary.
So this is quite an interesting story. No sex though, so I'm not sure why it's on an erotica novels recommendation list. Regardless it was refreshing to find a story that focused solely on the plot. Overall the story was steadily paced, the characters relatively fleshed out, and the ending was a happy one. The story did feel awkward at times with Callum's lack of language, and when Parker starts calling him "hun" and "sweetie" it really starts getting super uncomfortable. I do wish the author focused more on the mer people themselves and less of "These mer people now have legs and spend 90% of the story with legs".
If you have a spare $3 and want a cheap HEA read with no sex? Then this is the book for you.
This one is a book I liked the idea but just didn't like the characters and chemistry that much. I wasn't bored by the book but I was a little frustrated by the world building and lack of any background on Mellac and Callem. Callem doesn't talk and Mellac was a dick with attitude so it was hard to see where either character was coming from. The weird failed romance between Jay and Parker kind threw me as well as the whatever Jay and Mellac had going on. I like the idea of m/m Splash and Callem was adorable at times but they spent more time running from people and being caught than anything else.
I have very mixed feelings about this book...on the one hand the interactions of some of the characters were really cute and the dialogue was funny. But the romance in this didn't really work for me. Parker and Callem's relationship, while sweet at times, didn't make much sense in terms of romance. Parker makes the comment about how Callem is like a puppy and he really is. If anything, I just felt like Parker loved Callem in the way a person would care about family and others they look after, which isn't really a 'romance' sort of love but is no less important. And with Jayson and Mellac?? What a train wreck..I totally get that they're basically two different species but Mellac was just as likely to rip Jayson's head off at times (literally) than he was to hug and kiss him. He gets better after he understands more of Jayson's fear of him but still...it was taking "Alpha Male" two notches too high. And Jayson...ohhhh Jayson. Poor thing really needed to get his life together. He's straight, then he's making out with Parker, then he's straight again...I constantly found myself yelling "figure it out already!". Having a straight/confused character really didn't do anything for the plot except annoy me.
But I have to say, I really DID enjoy Parker and Callem together once I got farther into the story. Called was so freakin cute! I loved that Callem couldn't speak and needed to learn. I even grew to like Mallec by the end. I just really wish there wasn't so much sexual confusion with Jayson, and a bit more development of the romance. Like I said, mixed feelings...Overall though, I did like this and thought it was an entertaining read.
Callem is adorable! Callem's metamorphosis throughout the book is beautiful and amazing. I found that I really loved all the characters except Mellac--which is intentional. Everyone is cast in a really unique way. I enjoyed the relationship between the Mers and the two humans for what it said about what humanity really is. The vectors of the romantic relationships also had me guessing and hoping. The tension runs high from the very start, the suspense had me on the edge of my seat! I was reading until 5am because I couldn't put it down. I really wanted a sequel about these MCs but I see that the next book focuses on Oliver, a minor character I got a real kick out of. I hope we get a little more follow-up in the background of that book. Wonderful story!
I have to admit Parker's behaviour with the younger Mer, Callem, was great part of this story I liked it, but their romance just didn't make sense for me. Sure it's only the first book in this new series, so maybe it'll be better explained in the sequel. Then we have Callem's older brother Mellac, his part in this book was absolutely boring. Why did he matted with Jayson, if he nearly killed the guy and hatted all humans? Their romance didn't make sense, too. It was forced and unrealistic. So, overall the way this story begins, its great, pulling and exciting. But then how the storyline developed and evolved after an exciting start, was terrible and personally felt empty.
Creative, possible world if you bought into the Discovery channels mermaid "documentary"; which I really wanted to be real. I found the characters charming and funny. I liked that the Mers didn't magically understand all human customs or speak English automatically. The evil marine research company added needed action. Grammatical errors but readable. Graphic novel/comic book exclamations.
Beneath The Waves follows marine researcher Parker as he endeavours to save a merman that he has named Callem. He runs into trouble when he meets the young mermans brother Mellac. Make sure you guys check it out =D
3.5 stars - There are a lot of things I could nit-pick about this story, the biggest being extreme or unrealistic actions on the part of the humans but I'll refrain from being critical as the story kept me glued to the pages. It's a romance and an interesting tale.
I love Mer books and this was so very different. I wished it was longer and there are many questions but it was thoroughly enjoyable and I highly recommend this book it's great fun and all the characters are interesting.
i like that this book was not as expected. its realistic, quite humorous and engaging. I'm looking forward to reading the other book. job well done! :)
There is a slight flaw in your character writing more specifically Jay he's all over the place with how he acts and is honestly just an ass in general other than that I love the story and would like it in movie or show form if we could just edit jay just a little
