FIRE & Where We Choose To Belong

A dark mafia second chance romance with a possessive, morally gray boss and the woman who melts his stone-cold heart.

She’s his forbidden obsession. He’s her deadly protector.

Twenty years ago, Edward was the broken boy who swore to protect Becky in their foster home. Now she's back in Boston—and that boy is dead. In his place stands The Architect: Boston's most feared mafia boss who built an empire on blood and concrete. He doesn't just control Boston's underworld—he owns it. Every brick. Every soul. Every secret.

Becky should run. Instead, she walks straight into his world—and refuses to leave. Edward buried his humanity beneath violence and power, but she sees the boy he used to be. The one who held her when the world turned cruel. The one who promised her forever. One promise. Twenty years. And it's about to destroy him.

When war erupts, Becky becomes his most dangerous weakness—and his reason to fight harder. Enemies circle. Alliances crumble. And Edward faces an impossible Sacrifice the woman who owns his soul—or watch his empire burn. He built his kingdom on ruins. She'll either save him—or bury them both.

In Boston's shadows, love isn't just forbidden.
It's fatal.

A gripping tale of love, loyalty, and redemption. The pacing of this high-staked novel is relentless with twists and turns … I couldn’t put it down!

Set against the backdrop of a shadowy criminal underworld, Where We Choose To Belong masterfully blends the elements of suspense, family drama, and romance, creating a story that’s both emotionally charged and action packed. Exploring themes of identity, sacrifice and the lengths one will go to protect those they love, the Architect (a fitting name for Edward) a complex antihero whose journey from ruthless crime lord to a man seeking peace and redemption is both compelling and heart-wrenching. And his relationship with Becky, his childhood love, serves as the emotional anchor of the story, offering moments of tenderness amidst the chaos in which they live.

Yahya’s found family dynamic, plot twists and perfect redemption arc of a morally gray character only aids the vivid world-building and paints the perfect picture of the love and courage it takes to walk away from a life of shadows. This story is reminiscent of ‘The Bourne Identity’ and ‘The Night Circus’ and makes me want to check out Yahya’s backlog of stories!

New to Goodreads—really happy to get the chance to review this book and share my thoughts.

I recently saw a reddit post about this book by the author asking for honest reviews in exchange for a review copy. I was originally skeptical and I was ready for a scam but the author actually reached out to me and sent me the review copy via Story origin. I'm writing my review below.

First off, I really liked the writing style. It felt a bit too wordy at some points but, I really got into the story because of it.

Next, the story is your typical mafia romance with the leads being childhood friends and stuff, but I really enjoyed it. I didn't expect the plot twists. Pacing was good too. The main characters felt a bit too unrealistic at times and sometimes felt like they idealised each other, like he put her on a pedestal or something. Other than that, I loved their chemistry. The side characters were interesting too but a more detailed backstories for some of them would have been nice.

Overall, I liked the book so much, I completed it in two days. I’d recommend this book if you enjoy mafia romance with some sudden twists. I'm looking forward to what the author writes next. Anyways, I'm really glad I picked this up. Give it a try.

Thanks for reading my first review!!

Eddie was taken from an orphanage at a young age and spent his entire life being groomed to take over his uncle's business. Becky finally left the same orphanage and made something of her life. I enjoyed the story and the determination of each character to be what he or she needed to be. I have enjoyed the books I have read by this author.
