She likes her romance books to be packed with exciting heroes who keep you guessing, and intelligent, complicated heroines who make them work to get them. Her stories are filled with twists you won't see coming, both laughter and tears, and her Happy Endings are never cookie-cutter, but always deliciously satisfying.
She lives in California with her husband and dog Lady. Her favorite things to do are writing an angsty HEA love story, drinking coffee, eating chocolate, having a good glass of wine, traveling, binge watching TV series once the episodes are fully released, and chatting with her readers.
Finally some sex! That seems very dramatic but book one was a hell of a long foreplay session.
Varian is finally becoming himself with Merry but is between a rock and a hard place with her as he must keep up appearances as Captain Morgan when around others but her selfishness won't accept it, something I find quit irritating with her. Merry definitely needs to learn to grow up abit i'm afraid and stop the tantrums. I think realistically a woman back then would have been put in her place if she constantly insulted and attacked a man but the story revolves around the multi faceted character of Varian (a much better man than i'd have been in his place).
More Indy please!!! I loved the snippets of him and would adore a full length book of his own exploits, my favourite character out of them all.
The last 10% was definitely the best section of the book as progress was made between all the characters and details were revealed at last which has really stepped the Series up a notch.
Although I have my grumbles I really was addicted to the book and just had to know what happened to all involved. Fingers crossed Merrys abit more level headed in the next one.
I LOVE books in this time period, with that being said, I love Face To Face.
Lady Meredith Ann Merrick is trying hard not to open her heart to Varian Morgan so he doesn't break it. Varian Morgan cannot help being very interested in his hostage, Lady Meredith, but is trying everything to keep her at arms length. The journey they are on has them in close quarters, so the fire that sparks when they are near each other, is making it impossible for them to stay platonic. They both have secrets they are trying to keep from each other, but when their secrets are revealed, it's a whole new game.
I love Susan Wards writing. It flows very smoothly and will capture your attention from page one. Her attention to detail in this book had me feeling like I was really there. The sex scenes were HOT! While this book can be read as a stand alone, I recommend you read the first one as well as Face To Face! You will fall in love with Varian like I did!
Book reviewed for hookedonbooks Rewarded: FIVE STARS *****
I dove straight in to Face to Face by Susan Ward having just glanced at the synopsis to get a feel for what it might be about, I don’t like knowing too much about a book in case it ruins the experience. My brain zeroed in on that first captivating line of the blurb, “Lady Meredith Ann Merrick must not weaken against the temptation of Varian. He will be her ruin.” One fairly simple sentence had me hooked and that was before I even opened my e-reader for the full experience. I never read the first book in the series but in saying that, having not read it in no way detracted from my immense pleasure at taking off where the other book obviously ended. It’s written in such detailed and fantastic descriptions with particular detail to dialogue and surrounding locations that it elevates the tale of piracy, adventure and romance above the label of yet another simple historical romance to that of an epic saga of intrigue, deception, lust, redemption and secrets. There was no point in Face to Face that I wasn’t enthralled in the exploits of not only our two main protagonists and romantic leads Merry and Varian, but the eclectic array of players that Susan Ward brings forth so effortlessly from the page. The sailing, the meeting of the infamous Jean Lafitte, life in America during war times, the heated and burning passion simmering beneath the surface of two lost souls- Susan weaves it all together into a series of blockbuster proportions. Merry was a rather complex character for me. At times I admired her strength of character and at times I was at odds with how quick she was to use violence or stomp her feet in a huff, she would come across as rather juvenile. Her emotions seemed to a tad tempestuous but I put myself in her position and in doing so became more attuned with her character and began to see more from her point of view, the confusion of her circumstances at such a young age, the loneliness of being so far away from family, her developing feelings towards her captor and saviour. In the end I came to love her as much as Varian because of her flaws and realism. Varian was often stoic and mysterious but in quieter moments with Merry we are shown his tender side and his adoration for someone he believes is quite unattainable to him. “I prefer to watch the performance not on the stage.” She drew a quick breath. “And what performance would that be?” He smiled. “Watching Merry has become one of my most cherished pursuits.” I won’t delve too much into the storyline because I honestly think you as the reader should journey through this one at your own pace and enjoyment as there are quite a few twists and turns that will leave you gasping in surprise, laughing in joy, simpering in excitement and growling with frustration. That’s exactly what a marvellous piece of writing should do- make you feel a vast range of emotions. Susan Ward has an innate ability in transporting you back in time with only her words; the writing is flawless, the characterisation is a remarkable accomplishment, you see the characters grow and progress throughout the story- they are deeply flawed but also completely endearing. This second book ends on something of a question mark, just a little one that lets you know the epic love story of Varian and Merry isn’t quite finished just yet and I for one cannot wait to get my hands on that book. Five stars plus from me for this one.
Lady Meredith Merrick continues to fight off her attraction to Varian Morgan while still being captive on his boat. They boat want each other but neither will cave into their desires.
He takes her to his plantation in Richmond, Virginia where she spends time with his two supposedly cousins under his care. She sees another side of him as he tells people there that she is his wife. He offers to marry her but she refuses as he plans to leave her there while he goes off on his boat once again and leaves her the house.
Merry decides she does not want to be left with without him and returns on the ship with him. They continue to bicker being in close counters in his room on the ship and eventually she cannot help being seduced by him by falling in love with him. Once they consummate their relationship, they find themselves falling deeply with each other and neither willing to tell the other.
A year later finds themselves back in England still withholding secrets from each other and when Merry finds herself pregnant with his child things will come to a head. Their past will come to a head and the truth of who they are really will suffice and the bond they share.
Will Varian make a honest woman of her despite everything? Can these two find happiness together with a baby on the way once she is reunited with her family? We wait and see what will happen next
I am on page 751 of this book (reading on my iPad Air 2, so page doesn't correspond with the actual book pages) and am boo-hooing like a baby!! OMG, I don't know where or how Ms. Ward came up with this story-line, but it is taking me on a journey that has left my heart beating rapidly, holding my breath, crying and laughing out loud! I already know I'm going to re-read this series even before finishing book 2. I love this book!!
I seriously didn’t like Merry for a large part of this book as she had hissy fit after hissy fit and railed at Varian for keeping secrets while she was doing just the same. Still, the story and the romance progressed well, and the ending was excellent, with some major developments which make me keen to start book 3.
I received this book from the author for an honest review! And this book is oh so awesome. Merry's adventure continues in this book, the 2nd book of the Deverell series. It gets better and better.
Face to Face continues the saga of the Deverell Series and I must say Susan Ward did a great job of bringing the past to life.
Merry and Varian embark on yet another journey, this time to the Americas, where Varian is a legitimate and accepted ship's captain and trader. There Merry gets a taste of what freedom truly is, although tempered by incidents of discrimination because she's British and not American, no matter how she was against British policy at home.
She realizes she can't live without Varian, and makes him bring her on his ensuing voyages where they end up back in England and in yet another series of problems.
I'm not touching too much on the story because I don't want to spoil anyone's fun by posting spoilers. I leave the adventure (and it is an exciting one) to the reader.
I must say, I don't quite agree with how Merry is portrayed. She's supposed to be a radical hoyden in London, with scandal upon scandal under her belt. Yet, once she's in Varian's company, she's little better than a spoilt child who specializes in tantrums once she doesn't get her way. Why she doesn't understand that he cannot be just one person because it keeps him alive, I don't know. And why she expected pirates to be non-violent? I don't see it.
I will allow that despite her scandalous reputation, she IS spoiled, and relatively sheltered. But I wish she'd grown up a bit with her experiences rather than remain such a child. Perhaps I'm feeling a little of the frustration her father has with her.
Varian is someone I truly like. He's a cat with nine different lives with his ability to reinvent himself so very quickly. Consummate actor is a term that comes to mind. The subtle changes he adapts when going from British to American and back again is stunning. And I admire his patience and wit, especially when it comes to Merry, which I am sure I wouldn't have. I love his character and would say that this is someone who could possibly be the gentleman pirate Morgan.
But one character that I wish was touched on more is Indy. Now there is someone who could fascinate a reader no end. There is such a depth and grace to him that I feel he should have played a bigger part in this story as he is responsible for it's inception. How many facets can this boy have? How many secrets can someone keep? He is really my favorite character in this entire tale so far.
What made this for me were the last few chapters of this installment. The mystery (well, part of it) comes to light and some questions are answered. While there is a lot of action in more than a few chapters throughout, everything from the first novel on seems to lead to this culmination. And there is a major twist that had me saying, "What?!?" I'll just say I saw everything in a new light after this.
Susan Ward has a talent for making everything in her novels feel like they're part of a living past and Face to Face definitely is no exception. It's an intricately woven tale that has you ensnared in it totally, especially with an ending like that!
The second installment of this series is no less frustrating at times than the first but it was still a great story.
The web of half-truths and intrigue continues to be woven as Merry and Varian sail to new destinations. Varian has come to realize what Merry means to him, and although she recognizes that she has fallen in love with him, she is determined not to give in- until she can no longer deny him or herself. For a while she can pretend that everything is going to be okay, particularly when they are away from the ship and Varian shows her a side that she believes to be the real man beneath the many identities and disguises.
But now we are back to the real problem- neither one truly knows who the other person is. After weeks of seclusion and intimacy, Merry does not react well when they return to the ship and Varian is forced to take on the persona of the hardened pirate captain again. And this is where I truly struggled to understand her. She acts like a spoiled brat and small child rather than an almost 20 year old woman- and yes I understand the story is set in the 1800s, but it is like taking one step forward and 2 steps back again with her. Varian's patience with her antics is seemingly never-ending until she finally pushes him too far.
When they return to London almost a year after they initially departed, everything has changed for them- and then the house of cards that all their little lies and deceptions built comes crashing down around them. Varian's personality and actions become the complete opposite of his prior behavior and it couldn't happen at a worse possible time for Merry. The final installment should be interesting to say the least!
For the most part, I enjoyed the second installment of this series but Merry's constant crying and bickering with Varian made me put down the story in frustration. I could understand her reasons to some extent, but at times I found her totally unreasonable. For that I gave the book a four star rating rather than five. There is nothing I dislike more than for a couple to be constantly arguing. I was amazed at Varian's patience and humor with her because any other man would have given up on her. Other than that, I enjoyed the unfolding story and was surprised by the revelation of Varian's past. I still am not hooked on the idea of a series that continues on with one couple for three books and will probably never buy another series that does so but I will say that I have enjoyed both Varian and Merry's story, at least when Merry was not constantly bickering with him. It was quite obvious that Varian loved her to put up with her fluctuating moods but Merry just refused to see it. I am hoping the next installment won't spend so much time with Merry quarreling with Varian and get more into dealing with the villain.
Oh my. I was crying at the end of this book and I'm extremely excited to see what happens. Susan ward pulled me completely into the story and was able to make me feel what the characters were feeling. Amazing job and worth the read!
So this book was a lot better than the first one. I really enjoyed the characters a little more in this book. I will need to read the 3rd book in the series to find out what happens to Merry and Varien.
A book of this time period is a first for me but I definitely enjoyed it. It captivated me and I felt like I was taken back in time. The steamy scenes were exactly that... STEAMY!!
