Приятно се изненадах от романа на Томас Бренан!

В него няма много стиймпънк, но мрачната криминална интрига и героите са чудесни! За да разбие донякъде и клишето на този обичан от писателите времеви период, действието на книгата се развива в Ливърпул.

Достави ми удоволствие и го прочетох бързо - няма големи претенции и забавлява, въпреки кървавите моменти. Ще се оглеждам за други творби на автора.

Моята оценка - 4,5*!

P.S. Други читатели ми подметнаха, че книжното издание от 2014-та година бъка от грешки и вероятно е било пуснато без редактор и коректор. Електронната книга, която четох аз няма такива проблеми.

Много готина футуристична стиймпънк книга. Имаше моменти, в които отговорите прозираха преждевременно, но въпреки всичко, динамиката, мистерията и атмосферата бяха на ниво.

Инспектор Матю Лангтън още не се е отърсил от преждевременната загуба на съпругата си, когато го изпращат да разследва жестоко убийство. Навлизайки дълбоко в своите проучвания, открива, че мотивът, който стои зад престъплението е доста странен.Тук не става въпрос за обикновено убийство, а за нещо много по- сериозно- изтръгване на душата от тялото на жертвата. Лутайки се из лабиринта от въпросителни, сенките на ужаса отвеждат Лангтън при мистичният душевадец,  Доктор Стъклен.
Матю няма какво повече да губи, особено след загубата на съпругата си, и се впуска в истинско предизвикателство, с много плам.

Въпреки че историята навежда към очаквания за нещо брутално и страховито, всъщност е написана по доста увлекателно- разтоварващ начин! Много хубава книга!

Историята е добра,пренесе ме в епохата на Шерлок Холмс 🙂,сюжетът на книгата е някак различен от обикновената кримка. Има убийства,заподозрени и най важното много действие и малко мистика и свръхестесвена нотка. Хареса ми!

Чудесна стиймпънк викторианска детективска история. Това, което не ѝ достига, е достатъчно размазващо як край. Също така повече размах и смелост от страна на разказвача.
Иначе, макар че се повтарям, като светоусещане книгата е приятна (Викторианска Англия+стиймпънк винаги е успешна комбинация за мен), главният герой е на висота, доколкото може да е на висота стандартен тип детектив от история за младежи. Солидни три звезди и добро впечатление, макар че се надявам ако авторът пише все още, да пише вече по-уверено.

(Доза лични впечатления, които не интересуват никого): Драги Артлайн, да не би вие да си имате делвичка за събиране на изядени букви, аман xD... Е, успокоително е, че книгата не можа да бие "Епично" по критерия изядени/разместени букви. Не бързайте, хора, без паника...

Обичам от време на време да разнообразявам жанрово списъка си за четене с някоя и друга кримка. Нагнетена от напрежение атмосфера, куп заподозрени, проскърцващите дъски на пода подгизнали от кръв... Когато обаче престъплението е поднесено в завладяваща стиймпънк обстановка историята става абсолютно задължителна за четене! В свят на главозамайващи открития и изпреварил Викторианската ера научен напредък, един покрусен от преждевременната смърт на жена си мъж е по следите на ужасяващ престъпник, изтръгващ душите на своите жертви. Изключително интересен роман. От първата до последната страница сюжета беше напрегнат и се оказа много по-интересен, отколкото очаквах. Все е беше фентъзи детекстивски роман от викторианска Англия и честно казано очаквах да е пълна каша, както се получава обикновено като се смесват подобни стилове. Вярно е че очаквах повече фентъзи елементи, но очевидно авторът е залагал повече на реалността и на това да въведе читалеля в тази историческа епоха. Крайният резултат е повече от задоволяващ.
ПП: Горда съм от факта, че разкрих кой е Доктор Стъклен още преди да бъде обявен официално кой е!

Brennan creates a believable alternative Victorian England into which he places a great mystery. Using science and philosophy we are led through Detective Inspector Langston's case to a solid conclusion, with a few surprises on the way. This is really a "whodunnit" set in the Steampunk genre. A great read, and highly recommended. The biggest backdrop is the great Span, a bridge connecting American with the UK, an idea that I had not come across yet in any genre. The mystery itself keeps unfolding for us, and draws the reader in to the end.

Мрачно, отчайващо, объркано като лабиринт със зазидани всички възможни изходи. Криминална история с драма, хорър и фантастични елементи, много повече от обичайното за жанра стиймпънк. Няма корсети, няма хитроумни приспособления в шапките или веселяшки шеги на всъщност симпатичните лошковци. Тъмнината в душите обхваща света като смог, натежал от грехове и престъпления надхвърлящи социално приемливото. Кинематографично, ноарно и каращо погледа ти трудно да се откъсва от страниците. Спасението на света значи нещо различно за всеки, и понякога цената е твърде, твърде голяма, и май ще е по-добре да пуснеш нещата по пързалката, и да си изживееш каквото и колкото ти се полага без героичност. For a truly interesting and ‘fresh’ afternoon, this book is it. Taking place in the late 19th Century, readers are introduced to the greatest feat of engineering ever created - The Transatlantic Span. This incredible invention is an actual bridge that is built across the Atlantic Ocean linking England with New York City. Apparently it is time to inaugurate the Queen, yet this ‘wonder of the world’ is towering over the city of Liverpool and the building crews are running all over the place in order to finish the bridge in time for the Queen to dedicate it.

Switching gears…Inspector Matthew Langton is very broken up over the death of his wife Sarah and is trying his best to get back on the horse with a new case that could possibly distract him from his heartbreaking mourning; not to mention, try to get back into the Chief’s good graces. Matthew is soon assigned a case of murder on the docks, and the victim turns out to be a ‘Boer Irregular’ who’d just obtained a job working on the new bridge.

Langton had served in the Boer War and witnessed the horror there; he‘s now afraid that there might be a conspiracy afoot to kill the Queen or damage the bridge. Dead bodies begin to increase as the main suspect turns out to be one, Doktor Glass, who soon becomes the center of the plot and may also have somehow been involved in Sarah’s death.

Wild ideas, massive imagination - this book certainly provides a story that has never been told. The Transatlantic Span is beyond futuristic, but there are other more…monumental pieces of the good, old paranormal in this book that will certainly keep readers on their toes. No question about it, this narrative will definitely grab and hold all mystery and fantasy readers attention ‘spans’ without any problem at all!

This was probably the most realistic steampunk novel I've ever read. It was like a good crime novel set in an alternate history version of Liverpool.
The identity of the villain was pretty obvious from the first meeting, but the plot still had plenty of twists at the end that kept me guessing. And the characterization was excellent and layered.

Много симпатичен стиймпънк във Викторианска Англия. Англо-бурската война вместо 3 години продължава 20 и бурите печелят. Движат се с парни автомобили, но за сметка на това имат атомни централи.
И най-вече - построили са мост, който свързва Англия с Америка!
И едни много интересни разсъждения за душите и че има по-страшно от смъртта.

A steampunk tale that embraces early Victorian science, rather than entirely rewriting it, Doktor Glass is a fun read. The mystery and suspense feels genuine, the protagonist feels sincere, and while the backdrop isn't the most inventive, it feels more honest than many steampunk stories.

Inspector Langton's wife died just a short time ago, and as he begins to investigate a seemingly unrelated murder, he begins to realize the two may be more connected than he originally thought. Even worse, he's starting to wonder if the rumors of gangs who put the souls of the recently deceased in jars aren't the pseudoscientific sham he originally thought...

What I especially liked about Doktor Glass is that Brennan manages to write a mystery where it doesn't feel like the mystery is entirely generated from the characters' idiocy. I certainly did see some of the things the protagonist didn't, but I never felt like he didn't notice because it was better for the plot that he didn't, or because he was just irrevocably stupid.

I also really liked the fact that unlike many Victorian-set mystery stories, Inspector Langton isn't meant to be the bestest more amazing detective in the world. Nope. He's pretty run-of-the-mill. He just manages to get the right case at the right time, and persist at going forward.

This meant that I was really able to just go along for the ride, just enjoy the book. If you're looking for a fun, easy-to-read steampunk mystery, I'd certainly suggest Doktor Glass.

I haven't been interested enough in a book in order to finish it in a very long time. I had a very specific craving when looking for something I can finally complete: I wanted Victorian, I wanted steampunk and I wanted a mystery, paranormal thriller feel.

And I got exactly what I wanted with Doktor Glass. The entire book feels like a beautifully described and well-paced film, a gem among the muddy river that is most of today's cinema. I honestly wish it was a film.
I have no negative notes regarding the plot or character development or anything else. Everything almost felt tangible, I could pretty much feel the scenes as if I were in them. And the reveal and story behind the Doktor was (for me) not easy to predict yet I was suspecting something in the lines of what the truth was. And that did not remove from the immersion and experience.

Would definitely recommend to people who want a semi-serious, somewhat dark read with almost no romance, some real love, no "spice" and a satisfying logical ending. It's perfect for an autumn read, not Halloween as it's not a horror, but for a gloomy autumn day. It's definitely going to my favorite re-reads.

Alright, overall I don't know if I would really consider this a four star book, but throughout reading it, I thought it was three stars, and then the ending was good so...I'll give it a low four stars. I think sometimes the plot was lost in the plethora of technological details, which also served to make the reading a bit slower going and less enticing.
What I did like was that there wasn't a stereotypical plot going on. No stupid, plucky love interest that exists seemingly for the sole purpose of annoying me. No royal conspiracy leeching off of the fame and oddity of Queen Victoria. The protagonist isn't insanely smart or unbeatable, just very dedicated, and with no magical powers. It's a little refreshing.
Maybe the plot was a little slow, and a little easy to guess at, but that didn't really stop me from liking it, and the lack of triteness was a relief. There were steampunk elements, but they weren't too complicated or prevalent. So, I would say that I enjoyed reading this, and probably would look for future books from the author.

This book is a servicable detective novel with steampunk elements and supernatural influences. Imagine a Wilkie Collins and Stephen King collabration set in an alternate world of Victorian England and you have a good idea of what's inside. The move quickly along as the detective unravels a mystery surrounding 'the span' - a tranatlantic bridge between England and America - and along the way he encouters Jar boys, duplicitive cops and socail elites all under teh control fo Dokor Glass. The book had me guessing throughout and the main character was engaging. I was also taken in by the world being created by the writer and the supporting characters within. I would have liked a stronger steampunk vibe but the alternate world and the Liverpool setting - as opposed to London - added enough to the book for me to overlook this. I enjoyed this book and the oft used setting in the sewers of Liverpool at the end was both well written and enjoyable. A good book all around.

Иначе основната сюжетна линия на романа е криминална, като в началото имаме един брутално обезобразен труп, а в последствие бройката на мъртъвците малко по малко се увеличава, образувайки пирамида, на чийто връх стои мнимият Доктор Стъклен.

Обвитата от мъгли и пушек викторианска Англия, стийм пънк атмосфера и мистерия, все неща които обичам - тогава защо само две звездички?

Първо, никой от героите не може да ми стане симпатичен - всички са бледи и стереотипни, до степен че на моменти се чудех дали не съм чел и друга книга със същите действащи лица (за справка - такава няма, така че не съм).
Второ - липса на каквато и да е оригиналност. На всяка страница, на всеки ред ме преследваше усещането за дежа вю, от бавното начало до предвидимия финал.
Става за четене на плажа, ама нищо повече

Not the most philosophical book out there, but definitely nice and fast to read. The plot is a simple and common one - the wife of the main character has died before the events in the book from a natural cause...or the husband though it was natural until he found that the urban legends were actually true.

Very fast to read and I will totally recommend it to anybody who wants to read something light and in the steampunk/fantasy realm.

Welcome to Liverpool during the reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, where the engineering marvel of the age is being completed—The Transatlantic Span, a bridge that will connect England to New York. This is the home of Inspector Robert Langdon, who is not having an easy time of it. He’s a recent widower, having just lost his young wife, Sarah. He’s a veteran of the Boer War and the horrors thereof. Most of his days are spent in the cemetery. Many of his nights are haunted by memories of war. He wonders if he is entirely fit to work but isn’t given much of a choice when the body of a tattooed man is found at the docks. The dead man is a Boer (the tattoos confirm that) and an employee of the Span (proven by the uniform he wears). Identification is difficult beyond that, however, given the fact that he’s missing his face. And if that’s not quite enough difficulty for our hero, he’s also terrified that his recently-deceased beloved has had her soul trapped by the Jar Boys, heavies employed by mysterious, vaguely supernatural resurrectionists who deal the souls of the dead like drugs—for the right price, you can relive the memories of that soul. And there might also be a conspiracy to murder Her Majesty or blow up the Span, either of which could also ignite a third Boer War.

Poor Langdon. That’s a lot to figure out in just over 300 pages—find the murderer, save Sarah’s soul, protect Her Majesty, and prevent a war. And it’s to Brennan’s credit that he manages to get his hero through all of it with relative grace and some quite deft storytelling. Nothing here is groundbreaking; there are better mysteries, better supernatural stories, and better steampunk settings. But the combination of the three isn’t quite as common, and it’s the combo that keeps things readable (at a pretty good pace, too) and entertaining. Langdon is a good man and a decent inspector. The Jar Boys and Doktor Glass are creepy villains. And working-class, filthy, dockside Liverpool is a wonderful setting, as well as a welcome change from London, that grand doyenne of the steampunk world. In fact, I loved the setting so much, I actually wanted a little more from it. I wish Brennan had let Langdon get in a little deeper to the working man’s world, get a bit of proper Liverpudlian mud on that starched collar.

There is also a nice bit of Victorian police procedural here, which Brennan handles with just enough believability to keep anyone familiar with either modern police procedurals or period crime stories (or both, if you’re me) satisfied. He doesn’t step all over the history of forensics, but he also allows for just enough anachronistic discovery to move things along and let the distressed Langdon show why he’s considered top man at the game. Less careful authors have pissed all over this in far too many books, so it’s nice to see someone do it well.

I would have liked a bit more in places, though. The Jar Boys and the soul-stealing didn’t get nearly enough detail, in my opinion, nor did the terrifically-seamy idea of people using the experiences of the dead as their drug of choice. I was left feeling like I only got part of the story there, and it felt like there could have been, really should have been, so much more to tell. What kind of people would want that? What are the effects of long-term use? Are the souls refined at all or just harvested? How long does the high last? Can more than one person use a soul? Can souls go bad or wrong in any way? This idea felt like a deep, rich field, and Brennan barely dug down a couple of inches.

Also lacking was information about the two historic events, one real, one invented. The average American reader isn’t all that familiar with the Boer Wars, the Boers, the Transvaal, or pre-Sun City South Africa. More context would have been helpful, especially with regard to Langdon, who clearly displays signs of post-traumatic stress. Then there’s the Span itself. We know it’s a marvel. We know men have died building it. And we know it’s important to Crown and country. But we don’t get to know much more than that. It’s rare that I think a novel could benefit from a hundred or so extra pages; most of the time I find myself wishing the editor had been a bit more cutthroat when executing his or her duty. In this case, more would have been better. But at least what is here is actually pretty good. This is a fun read for fans of mysteries, Steampunk, and Victorian crime fiction. Langdon is interesting and I hope Brennan writes him again.

I expected more steampunk, instead we got a fictional bridge, some religious fanatics and a portrayal of souls bordering a fairytale. The scientific "explanations" behind everything were clever and properly crafted but the whole investigation felt flat and underwhelming. Even the plot twist at the end, Doktor Glass confessing the crimes and giving the whole reasoning behind bottling up souls, was predictable and boring. Interesting concept for a book but it could use some reworking, a change of pace and better characters.

A steampunk mystery! I thought that the book was interesting as it offered a small glimpse into an alternate history of Victorian England. I did figure out the "mastermind" behind the criminal activity quite early and I did think that the detective came to some conclusions without a lot of supporting evidence. However, a good escapist read.
