Never having read the original 'The Wizard of Oz', it was interesting to see exactly what happens to Dorothy and the assortment of friends she meets on her way to see the Wizard. Yes, I knew their names but I did not know exactly what they were after when going to Oz ... now I do!
Dorothy was living at her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em's house when a storm blew up and the couple headed for the cellar for safety. Dorothy was not quite fast enough so she got trapped, with her dog Toto, in the house as it lifted off the ground and landed elsewhere.
When Dorothy woke up she found herself in a strange land and thus her adventures began. An old woman gave her a pair of silver shoes and told her that she had to make her way to the Emerald City and ask the Wizard of Oz for help in getting back home. So off she went with Toto.
On the way she met the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion, all who wanted something to make their lives better and happier. Dorothy invited them to accompany her to Oz to meet the Wizard. On the way they had various adventures such as falling asleep in a poppy field and crossing a river on a tree trunk and although they were both dangerous in their own way, between the four of them they managed to pull through and reach the Emerald City.
Oz told them that to get what they wished for they must kill the Wicked Witch of the West. That did not prove easy and the foursome found themselves in trouble only to be rescued on each occasion. Then Dorothy managed to throw water on the Wicked Witch and she melted away so they made their way back to see Oz , who was delighted with the success of their mission.
He accordingly granted their requests and sent them on their way home. But once again the journey was not without its pitfalls and they had to fight their way through various dangers and, with the help of the Winged Monkeys and the Good Witch of the South, they eventually returned from the wonderful Land of Oz ... Dorothy was so pleased to be home again.
This version, with lovely illustrations, is a good introduction to the Wizard of Oz and for older readers leads to a read of the real thing being a possibility.
